The Lounge Married women, how did you know he was the one? Feb 28 2007

I started dating my husband when we were 16.  I had been dating a friend of his but we kissed one night after work.  I felt so guilty about kissing another guy behind my boyfriends back that I was totally distraught.  Then my now husband told me not to worry about hurting his feelings, that if I wanted to stay with my boyfriend he would be fine, all he really wanted was to see me happy.  That was the day I knew that he was the one.

When you are willing to sacrifice your own happiness for the good of another person, that is when you know that you have the kind of bond that cannot be broken.  However, that has to go both ways, you shouldn't always be the one making the sacrifices.

Don't worry about proving anything to your parents.  Just be patient and respectful of their feelings and opinions.  Remember they really do have your best interest at heart.  It is hard for some people, especially parents, to see that a young person is serious about a relationship.

Have fun both with your boyfriend and without.  Make sure you maintain your individuality.  Make sure you both finish your education, then talk about marriage.   Remember, the number one thing that married people fight about is money - so give yourselves time to become financially able to support yourselves.  Otherwise you are sabotaging your marriage before it even starts.

What about portion sizes, especially for younger children.

Studies have shown that children of overweight parents are at greater risk of being overweight themselves.  I think much of this is due to an inability to recognize a proper portion.  I have a 15 month old and I have been trying to make sure I don't pass on my bad food habits to her.  However, there is very little information about the calorie needs of children and what constitutes a serving at various age levels.  Obviously a serving of fruit for me is not the same as a serving of fruit for my daughter.  I think if a parent has a hard time recognizing what an adult portion looks like then they are certainly not going to be able to accurately judge how much food they should give their child.  I know kids grow at different rates and all that but there has to be some guideline for how much the average kid needs at each age.

Garlic also helps keep fleas away.  The oils from the garlic are excreted through the animals skin (not enough for humans to smell)  and fleas don't like it.

Let me add to the congratulations!  I am a mother of a 15 month old daughter and it is the most wonderful and rewarding thing I have ever experienced.  Don't think that just because you're pregnant you should forget about your goal.  When I got pregnant with my daughter I figured I shouldn't diet so I went in the complete opposite direction.  I ate pretty much whatever I wanted and gained 50 lbs to prove it.  Your baby needs healthy food and about 300-500 calories a day to do all the growing and developing he/she needs to do.  Make use of the tools here to keep an eye on your calories - not in an effort to lose weight, but to keep control of how much you gain.  Believe me, it will pay off in the end.  First you will have less to lose once the baby is born.  Second, just think of how great it will be for your morale when you lose the first 30 lbs in no time.  That's what I call one hell of a jumpstart!  If that isn't enough motivation, just remember this: the better shape you're in throughout your pregnancy, the better your chances for a quick and easy (relatively speaking) labor and delivery.  Best of Luck to you and your new family!!

Don't feel the need to apologize Peaches.  Grammer is one of my pet peeves also.  Though I know that my grammer is not always perfect, I try to speak and type correctly.  I can ignore many of the grammatical errors that are made in posts.  However, the use of the word "lose/loose" is so prevalent on this site that I think people should take the time to learn the correct spelling and usage.  Thank you for taking the time to point it out to those who need it.

By the way, if this thread had been posted as an attack on specific members then it would have warrented an apology.  Instead, you have posted this as general information.  Unfortunately, those that are offended are the people who most need this information, yet are the least likely to actually use it.  I think it is sad that many people would prefer to be thought of as ignorant quietly, than to be made aware of their error.

Weight Loss Tyra Banks Feb 05 2007

I think this is the first time that I have gotten truly angry while reading posts on a C-C forum.  I neither like nor dislike Tyra Banks, I don't watch her show, nor do I take the time to follow her fashion choices as some of you appear to do.  However, I am thoroughly disgusted at some of the attacks that have been posted.

Here we are, a bunch of people all struggling with various issues related to our weight and our body image.  I have read numerous threads discussing the hurtful remarks that people make because we are overweight, or underweight, or because we make no secret of the fact that we are working to change our weight.  I read remarks about how insensitive others can be and how those people are morons.  Yet I see on this thread that when a fellow human being who happens to be in the spotlight, makes some of those same remarks that you all have made, you attack her and call it a publicity stunt!  Maybe the next time I see a thread full of people looking for support to deal with the pressures of the outside world I should tell them that they are just looking for attention.  Just because the woman is a celebrity does not mean that she doesn't have feelings.  I would like to know how some of you would handle it if I took an unflattering picture of you in a bathing suit and put it in a national publication with an insulting headline (which I would do just to get people to read my magazine BTW).

I am amazed that people that can seem so kind and compassionate when talking to fellow C-C members could be so cold, and heartless when talking about someone they don't even know.

I'm with you on the stretch mark question.  My daughter is 15 months old and I still have a lot of stretch marks that are pretty dark.  Some of them have started to fade but the ones on my sides are still pretty nasty looking.  I was hoping they would have faded by now.  Now I am just hoping that they don't come back with my next pregnancy!

I am lucky enough to be married to my high school sweetheart.  We met in junior high and became good friends.  I actually dated a friend of his first.  The summer before our junior year we started working together so we saw each other all the time.  My friends kept saying that he had liked me for a long time but hadn't said anything because I was dating his friend.  Finally one day we ended up kissing and I didn't know what to do.  I felt guilty for kissing him behind my boyfriend's back.  He saw how upset I was and told me not to worry about hurting his feelings, he could manage, all he wanted was for me to be happy.  Well, that really sealed the deal!!  By the end of the week I broke up with my boyfriend and started dating my husband.  We've been together for the past 12 years, and happily married for 4 years.

I know that I will tell my daughter our story.  I can only hope that she will find a young man that will care about her enough to put her needs above his own, and that she will be able to do the same for him.

Please take everyone's advice and seek help immediately.  I was anorexic when I was your age and many of my friends were too.  Take it from me this way of eating will destroy your life.  I was lucky.  My ED didn't last long, I got help pretty quickly.  The main side effect I had to deal with was that my metabolism was so out of whack that I gained too much weight afterward.  I know that to someone with an ED that sounds like the worst thing in the world but believe me it's not.  My problem can be reversed.  My friends were not so lucky.

One of my friends is now dealing with osteoporosis and arthritis at the age of 28.  Another of my friends had a heart attack at the age of 18.  She is now married and she and her husband wanted to have a baby.  Unfortunately, between the damage that has been done to her heart and to her reproductive system, she is unable to have children.  To make matters worse, she did not actually becoe infertile, she can get pregnant but miscarries before she gets out of the first trimester.  Her doctor has told her that even if she manages by some miracle, to make it through the first 3 months of a pregnancy, she will probably not live long enough to deliver because her heart cannot handle the strain of pregnancy.

This is a serious illness and you must seek help to turn your life around before too much damage is done.
Weight Loss Thyroid issues Jan 12 2007

A goiter is simply an enlarged thyroid gland, it is not an indicator of a malfunctioning thyroid.  Goiters can be found in people with hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism or perfectly normallly functioning thyroid.  The best indicators of a thyroid condition are TSH, T3, and T4 levels.
If you think you're doctor is not diagnosing you correctly then maybe you should seek a second opinion, and make sure that they test all three levels.  Many doctors only test the T3 and T4 levels, but they can appear even when there is an issue.  I went through 4 doctors in 5 years before I was finally diagnosed.  The other doctors weren't lying or incompetant, thyroid disease is just sometimes hard to diagnose.  I actually went to the doctors complaining of joint pain and it turns out that that can also be a symptom of thyroid problems.
Regardless you should seriously look into this problem.  Under or overactive thyroid can wreak havoc with your body in ways that are far more serious than weight fluctuations.  Thyroid problems in a pregnant woman can even cause miscarriage or birth defects.
However, if you are diagnosed with a problem don't expect that the weight will come off easily.  It is still hard work.  As was said before, correcting the thyroid levels will only help to stop any further weight gain it won't help reverse the damage that has already been done.
I hope this info is helpful!

I have Hashimoto's Disease which is an auto-immune disease.  Basically my immune system is attacking my thyroid and slowly killing it.  Unlike regular hypothyroidism, my levels teeter-totter, so I go from hypothyroid to hyperthyroid.  It really does a number on my weight loss efforts!  Right now I'm in a hypo phase so they have me on levothyroxine, but I've been on it for a while so I'm figuring anytime now my bloodwork will comeback out of whack and I'll have to start all over again.  I just started trying to lose weight again and this time it seems to be working, I'm down 8.5 lbs since the new year so here's hoping!
