FYI: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/viruses/transmis sion.htm There have been reports in ferrets and other households pets as well. It's not unheard of. H1N1 is a type A influenza and transmissible. One also sheds the virus for longer than usual in H1N1 per recent studies. So its contagious longer. Also, humans with the strongest immune systems that have been hit particularly hard by H1N1. (Just for those using "pets have strong immune systems" argument)

Restlessgirl - I have noticed it too. Coming over here sometimes feels like walking into that scary biker bar off that dirt road - you don't know if a brawl will break out or if someone will crash a pool stick over someone else's head so you just sit in the corner and sip your beer hoping no one looks at you funny... ;) It's not the arguing about semantics that get me, it's that sometimes there's a valid question or post and it denigrates into something so sour and angry (and usually the same argument over and over again). It's just bad vibes... (but, honestly, I prefer a angry vegan rant to "OMG I binged on a piece of celery help me I'm going to blow up to a size 0!" posts! LOL!) |

Runnersworld has a lot of good resources. You can try this to start: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-380-381-386-9397-0,00 .html The advice for 5 K applies well to all distances. The key is to build up slowly. I'm a slow runner in general too but I run for fitness and fun, not to win races. Peruse runners world - they have articles on just about everything, even good meals and snacks to have when in training! Good luck :) Edit: you'll have to cut and paste the link in your browser and delete the weird spaces, sorry, CC doesn't like long links! |

Medications: there are gelatin free formularies for all medicines. Such products are sometimes against religious beliefs. In addition, some insulins, hormone treatments and other medications are not animal-friendly in their production. Kosher and Muslim-friendly stores are always good places to assure pork-free (i.e. gelatin-free) foods and such. |

Okay... so I have been perusing Cooking for Two recipes, websites, etc. I have to say I'm sorely disappointed as the vegetarian recipes seem to mostly consist of smoothies, salads and little nothings. Ah well... I definitely have some good tips in this post! Thanks! I guess its too much to ask to have a Moosewood cookbook for one with ten ingredients or less per recipe? ;) Here's a site I typically like: http://www.eatbetteramerica.com/recipes/cooki ng-for-2.aspx

Wow, thanks! All great ideas. I do some of this already - Like I said, I'm big into freezing portions. But I love the ice cube tray idea for vegetable stock and coconut milk (both which I love to use but don't use a lot)! And, heck, didn't even think of tomato paste in tubes! Yay for cooking tips! |

Thanks. But I still find most my recipes involve things that go bad! Just in the last month I've thrown away tomato paste, beans, veggie broth, lemon concentrate, and coconut milk. I should throw away salsa and thai curry paste because they probably are bad now but I don't have the heart to toss them quite yet.

Thanks wes! Congrats on your 5K! I had to use the treadmill the last two runs because it's been too dark to run outside but I'm feeling pretty decent! I'm excited to run. I found a 4 mile run in my area the same day so now i'm debating registering for the local one instead... but part of me just wants to stick to the 5K, even if it does mean maybe traveling and staying at a hotel. The local run usually has more than 15,000 people (don't understand how any running can get done with that kind of crowd)! Plus, it might be nice not knowing anyone there, that way if I look like an idiot no one will ever know! |

Thanks! I find I do have faster times if I take walk breaks. I just did get new shoes. I was a little disappointed they didn't plop me on a treadmill and tehy seemed almost bored with assessing me. I brought in my last two pairs and said why I liked the ratty ones and never liked the "new old" ones. So I have a slick new pair of asics. The only ones in my size are black so that's kinda fun... black running shoes! I also got myself some nice leggings since it's probably too cold for my running shorts and might be too wet for the pants. I also got a new shirt on a whim and ended up speding $200 for the three items! Ah well... it's only money ;) Took today as a rest day - I kinda overdid I yesterday between my two sports of choice since I had the day off and it was sunny for a chnage. Going to try and run bright and early tomorrow... need to start getting used to running in the AM for my race! I am definitely best as a late-afternoon runner so it's going to be hard. |

Aw! I love you guys! I'm just about to head out for a quick run and am happy I stopped by here first. You all are so supportive! I am excited for this race. I picked this one mostly because I can't commit to anything in April or May and didn't want to wait until June. This is the only race within a 3-hour drive I can make in the next three months! I may try some sprints, or "strides" as runnersworld.com called them, after a couple of my runs this week and see how my body likes it. I have been addictively reading tips on the web about first 5K's and you guys have a lot of the same good advice!

I would suggest checking out some running magazines or websites. http://www.runnersworld.com/ is one of my faves. Running/walking combinations are what pretty much every learn-to-run program endorses so don't get discouraged if you find you need to walk. In fact, I read in a runner's article just recently that some of the fastest distance racers incorporate walking in their runs regularly. Those world champions are hardly seen as "lame" :)! Walking helps you recover and you run better after a short recovery. Professional runners do it, so can you :) Listen to your body and if something is hurting stop running and take stock of what you're feeling. That may help prevent injury. Warming up and cooling down are critical, as theamue said. Also, sometimes there are running groups in your area you can join. Out here they usually start up early Spring and support runners (and run/walkers) of all levels. Also, if you want to read about how a bunch of us here (or that used to be here) started running you can peruse our learn to run program (http://caloriecount.about.com/learn-run-wants -ft27698)! I was running 20 miles a week by the end of the program and just yesterday went for a leisurely 5-mile jog and it felt great! |

| Fitness | Best Music For Running | Feb 18 2009 15:10 (UTC) |

Great thread! I'm such a music geek. I have so many running playlists! I tend to like artists like Sleater-Kinney and Stellastar (which most people haven't heard of) but they have a great beat for running. I also like to mix it up a lot to keep it interesting, a fast Ella Fitzgerald big band piece with Eminem's 8 mile, then Rob Zombie, White Stripers, The Killers, Patsy Cline, U2's Beautiful Day, Cake, Bikini Kill, NOFX, System of a Down, Yeah yeah yeahs, Queen... etc. I think keeping it interesting keeps me going. If it's all techno or all rock I am afraid I'd get bored. I have probably 11 or 12 playlists that are 40-50 minutes long (If anyone is really interested I can post them - many of them have "walk breaks" worked into them too from when I was learning to run). However, I think the two albums I got that I use the most are System of a Down's Hypnotize/Mezmerize and Stellastar's title CD. Almost every song on there is a great pace! And the Matrix soundtrack isn't too shabby either (Rammstein is on there)! |

I am also a pescetarian. Actually, an ovolactopescatarian but most people give me a blank look when I say that so I just tell people I don't eat meat :). I eat fish but I try to shop for locally caught wild fish and buy from local vendors - I'm lucky I live on the ocean and can do that. I chose not to eat other animals mostly because 1) it breaks my heart to do it* 2) because I don't feel its healthy and 3) and because by now I have no taste for it. I try to make healthy fish choices and started by using this guide: http://www.nrdc.org/health/effects/mercury/gu ide.asp It has info on which are farmed, in low numbers, use up resources, etc. *(I know one can make the same argument about fish, arsenic on "organic" vegetables, imported goods and factory made breads and the like but unless I could have my own sustainable food source I have to compromise somewhere and eat something). |

| Health & Support | what do you do when you are bored or can't sleep? | Feb 14 2009 19:35 (UTC) |

Sounds like two issues, insomnia and boredom. Two different things. I sleep at funny times with a swing shift-type schedule (sometimes work nights, sometimes days, sometimes 36 hours straight). I find just laying down and relaxing helps even if you can't sleep. But "sleep hygiene" (medical term) is important for restful sleep. Google it and you'll find some tips that help insomnia. If you're lazy, here's the first link that showed up for me: http://www.umm.edu/sleep/sleep_hyg.htm I actually counsel people on insomnia (ironically) so please feel free to be annoyed by too much advice (or ask for more) ;) As for boredom. I'd suggest making a list of things you can do and putting it up somewhere. Like on the fridge if you find you're trying to avoid bored snacking. That way you can just take a look at the list and don't have to come up with anything when you're not totally awake but can't sleep! If you can't sleep because your brain is too busy, journaling those thoughts help a lot. My list of things to do is pretty diverse and includes things like "make an origami crane", "play with my cat", "clean the toilet" or "respond to an email I've been avoiding" ;)

Hula hoop! I live in a smaller apartment with grouchy neighbors underneath me so I can't jump up and down or do any videos. I do have a jump rope (like lafoutloud01 recommended) but that's definitely too noisy for the neighbors! I love my hula hoop. I bought it at a toy store and I can just clear enough space (you only need the space to be about hip level anyway) to hula away and look out my window or watch TV :) |

| Calorie Count | McCain ads on CC?! | Oct 03 2008 04:56 (UTC) |

Thanks guys - I feel MUCH better that both parties have ads on here (have only seen the McCain ones, myself) and to know that maybe it wasn't as deliberate as I thought it was. I used to work for an antidiscrimation non-prof out of college and it made me a little paranoid about corporate America and where they spend their consumer's money. Since then I refuse to pay into orgs like that (Domino's Pizza is a great example). Tolife, I hadn't even thought of it that way! Ha! Maybe I'll have to try it out... I'm not going anywhere, I like CC too much. I guess I just get hot and bothered about some things and poltics can be one of them. However, if they start having banner ads for the KKK or The American Family Association I will have to rethink sticking around ;) |

Ha - Yeah, girlfighting, I DO have problems with the other ads too. But for some reason the Palin/McCain stuff hits me a little harder... maybe I'm used to tuning out the "Lose 30 lbs in 3 hours!" baloney.
As for Google picking the ads for me? Do they have browser history specific advertising on here? I mostly log on from a generic workstation computer at work. However, I have been known to watch the Tina Fey SNL Palin impersonations on youtube. |

| Weight Loss | For those of us who reached our goal weight, gained alot back, and now feel depressed. | Jul 10 2008 04:36 (UTC) |
16 |
| I've also been feeling low about my weight gain. My story is that I used CC, exercised a lot, ate right, and got fit and actually *liked* my body for the first time in years. Then I started a job from hell in a city far away and it seemed the only thing that seemed to make me feel good was yummy food... just while i was eating it - then I felt like crap. Still stuck in that job for two more years. Don't even recognize myself in the mirror. I'm ashamed of how I've back-slided. Can't seem to get back on track for more than a couple days in a row. So now, since I can't seem to do well controlling what and when I eat, I have been trying to exercise nearly every day. Hopefully that will kick things off. Maybe I'll start eating better, maybe my metabolism will increase, and maybe, hopfully, I'll start to lose weight instead of gain. I spend a LOT of energy trying not to hate my icky new (old) body and focus on exercise and healthy choices. It's so hard but important in this battle. |

| Motivation | Mornings - how do you get up? | Jun 17 2008 04:56 (UTC) |

| Kinda random - I find that if I don't take my multivitamin I am exceedingly groggy in the AM's. I have to get up around 4:45-5 AM for work 6-7 days a week so I try to make it a rule to take my vitamins. Also, I keep my coffee maker on a timer so it brews a fresh pot minutes before I wake up -- the smell motivates me to get a cup (I loooove my morning cup of coffee) and I know it will be burned and gross if I dilly-dally. Just my two cents. |

| That's awesome mrsdagle! Great job! And Vegan, nice to see Le Tigre on your mix. I have some great ones - I made one for each week's run, one song to run by, one song to walk by until the running was too long for one song (5 minutes I think it was). But those were my cues so I didn't have to look at a watch :) For me it's simple but two good mapping resources are mapmyrun.com and g-maps pedometer. I use them a lot. No runs for me. Only had 2 hours sleep the night before the day I could get out before 6 so that didn't work out so well. The 18 hour work days are too draining. Today was my first day off in a while and after sleeping 13 hours I just ran errands. Tomorrow I work 16 hours but maybe Monday I can get off at a good time and go for a run! Here's hoping! :) |

| Punky coming up for air here ;) Hi Vegan! Welcome and good luck! No runs to report. Been getting up for work at 4:45 and getting home totally exhausted at around 6 PM. Have to go to bed around 9 PM so factor in changing, a phone cal or two, an email check and dinner and that's pretty much my day. But if I can get out before 6 some night I might try for a run. I signed up for the virtual memorial day 5K so hopefully I can acutally run it. I am walking to work, though, and spend most the day on my feet running around so don't feel too bad about it. Though my fat pants seem to be fitting too well :( So I would ideally like to get back in gear. Okay.... enough air, back to the grind... |

| yo - it's been 4 days. The weekend is over. Where is everyone? I'm on week of vacation (totally needed!) in the midwest and went for a peaceful run in the woods around some wetlands and a lake yesterday. It was a gentle jog and I just explored some trails for about 40 minutes, sometimes running faster than others (I was even so happy to not be in Tacoma I skipped for a bit! Seriously!). It felt great when I was done. I stretched in the sun aftrewards! God I can't wait until I'm out of this contract and can enjoy daylight again! 25 more months! :) Anyway, so I realize I really like trail running much better than road running. I'm lucky to live near an old growth forest with lots of trails. I think I should head there more often. It's just so much more peaceful and I feel I can run forever. Have you guys tried running (or run/walking) in the woods or other terrain? It really is awesome. And gentler on the joints. :) |
