Pregnancy & Parenting Lower back pain - early sign of pregnancy? Sep 24 2008
15:16 (UTC)

No, not trying, but hopeful.  My DH would like us to have all our student loans (ie. the whole of our debt) paid off before we start trying.  We'll have that accomplished in December.  That's why, of course, we're using condoms.  I've just wanted to get pregnant since we were married two and a half years ago, and every month when I get some "symptom", my mind goes into overdrive.  I keep hoping for that 1% ineffectivity of condoms.   I think more than likely, like all the other times, it is just all in my head.  Thanks for taking the time to reply though.  It's been really tough waiting, but I know it will be that much sweeter when it happens.

Just as an update and/or info on my post, with regard to hydration.  I do have about 8 glasses of water per day, at least.  It seemed like there might be confusion about possible dehydration with regard to my post.

Thanks for your input ladyduece - it's encouraging.  I'm sure it will start to level out too.  It does help to have a jump start though and feel encouraged to keep going.  It has taken a TON more time to prepare my  meals and plan everything out, but I've started to think of that time as "me" time- time that will help me feel and look better, and just get in the habit of working it into my schedule.  I'm sure as time goes on, I'll get better at streamlining the prep work and get a good system going.  It's so much "easier" to just grab something processed and lacking in nutrition and be on my way, but "easy" doesn't produce results.  You only get out of something what you put into it, right?  Smile

Thanks, that's very helpful.  It's hard to pull in the reins sometimes, but I know I need to do just that this time.  Any loss is good loss and progress at that, so it's good to remember it's better to take it slow for lasting health and success than go to extremes and end up forefiting it all.  Thanks for the insight.

Foods Does Anyone Order Tofu Shirataki Noodles? Sep 22 2008

I actually found them at my local Kroger - close to the produce section where they keep all the organic milks/soymilk, tofu, etc.  They were right next to the tofu.  So, they may be at your local grocery store, just might take a bit more hunting.

Personally, I really didn't like them. I thought they were a bit slimey, and I really can't do slimey.  I also didn't like the flavor, which I thought was little to none.  I guess they are a good very-low cal food that would possibly fill you up, but I'd much rather have some ww pasta with fresh veggies and herbs and really enjoy it than eat a bunch of something I don't care for just because it's really low cal.

But, I do hear of many who really like them, so maybe it's just a taste preference, and one I don't happen to like.  It would be worth a shot at getting some, but I'd suggest you try just one packet before you order the whole box as a sort of trial run.  I'm really glad I did.

I hope this helps :).

Weight Loss The first couple weeks are the hardest......right? Sep 19 2008

Driventon, I have to say, your approach seems very laid back but gets the job done.  I like the idea of scoping out your favorite fast food places or restaurants so you're well prepared ahead of time - good tip.  It's also good to know the taste buds and the body gets used to the new way of eating - it may take a few weeks, but I do believe it will happen.  Thanks for the encouragement!

These are great ideas!  Today I had a salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, mushrooms, carrots ) with smoked salmon on top and light dressing.  It turned out really good.  I also brought 1/2 cup chickpeas, an apple, and 1/2 cup cottage cheese for three different between-meal snacks, and it's 3pm and not even wanting my second snack yet (I think because of all the good protein - yea!).  Usually by this time I've eaten all my snacks and then some.  I guess along with the change in mind-set of healthier eating is also just making the time to prepare the food needed to achieve that healthier life.  I have to remember when I'm doing that extra food prep work, that this is "me" time - this is the time in the day when I am doing something really good for myself with positive life-long benefits as the result.

I really appreciate all the support and encouragement of fellow cc'ers.  Thanks again!

Hmmm...there are a few reasons.  My husband just graduated from grad school and when I saw my picture from the ceremony, I couldn't believe I looked like that.  I see myself every day in the mirrow, but apparently didn't really see myself until then.  So, I guess it was a wake up call that I could stand to drop a few.

Also, back in college (I'm 30 now), I was down to 125-130 (5'6") and being as athletic as I am, it was a really good and satisfying weight for me.  Although, I got there in a very self-destructive way.  So, my goal now is to get back to that point, and a size 6 once again, where I feel really good in my skin, but do it in a healthy way both physically and mentally.  Right now I'm 147-150, which still isn't in the "overweight" range, but for me, it doesn't settle too well.  This would be an "okay" place to stay, but I want to feel satisfied once again with how I look and feel in my own skin.  And I want to do it the right way.

Finally, my father died when I was younger of a heart attack and high cholesterol runs in my family, so I really want to up my chances of a long and healthy life.

So, the journey begins!

Can I still Join?

Age: 30

Current Weight: 159

Goal Weight: 130

I've been on the roller coaster for a while, but can never get lower than 145.  I was 130 in college and loved that weight, but got there in an unhealthy way.  I'd love to be there again, but with a healthy journey this time.  I'm athletic and try to work out four times a week if I can - either run 30 minutes or do high impact cardio and weight routine for 30 minutes (unfortunately, 30 minutes is all I have for my lunch hour). My downfalls are sweets and large portions, and lack of accountability.  I'd love the accountability and encouragement those who are in the same boat as me would be able to offer. Thanks so much for starting this thread!

Foods Lentils anyone?? Feb 13 2008

I have a wonderful lentil recipe I just made up one day.  Here it is....

Cook your bag of lentils (after you wash them and check for any rocks, etc in the bag) in chicken broth.  This is virtually calorie free and gives the lentils a rich flavor.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, stir fry with a little olive oil, salt and pepper (to taste), and a couple teaspoons cumin, your favorite veggies (I usually use carrots, celery, bell pepper, broccoli, onion, garlic, mushrooms, zucchini, etc.) - make sure to cut them small (like dice).  Cook until no longer raw, but take them off the heat while they're still crisp - you don't want them mushy.

Remove veggies from the skillet with a slotted spoon and in the same pan, brown some lean ground turkey with salt and pepper to taste.

Once the veggies are done, the turkey is browned,  and the lentils are tender, combine all three (mix well but gently so you don't mush the lentils) and pour  into a big 13x9 pyrex oven-proof dish.

(Optional)  Mix together some Bisquick biscuits (single biscuit packs where you just add water) and drop them on top of the lentils - two rows of three or four, depending on how large you want your biscuits.  Sometimes I just line one side with biscuits so I can have the option of no biscuits if I want it.

Cook at 400 degrees, or whatever temp the biscuit pack says, for about 15 minutes until biscuits are light brown.  Or, if you're not using biscuits, you can still use the same time and temp.

This is delicious, and really doesn't take long to make - chopping the veggies is the most time intesive.  But, you can cook the veggies and the turkey while the lentils are cooking - by the time you're done, the lentils are just about done and you're ready for the final step.

Give it a try - my husband who is definitely NOT a veggie lover, LOVES this dish and requests it by name at least four times a month.  Let me know what you think if you try it.

Weight Loss Appetite is out of control.. Feb 11 2008

My thought is that it might be more psychological than it is physical hunger.  If you've gotten checked out by your medical doctor and there's no medical reason for why you are wanting to eat all the time, I would suggest considering going to a counselor and seeing if you can discover the reason why you fee such a need to feed yourself.

I only say this because I once struggled with the same problem.  I felt so empty inside and tried to fill it with food - as cliche as it all sounds, it's true.  The emptyness wasn't for food, it was for a spiritual hunger I couldn't physicall feed, and also sooooo many other issues that came to the surface once I started counseling.  It was difficult to face all my issues, but incredibly benificial in the end.  I no longer feel the urge to feed myself all day long - I get days here and there, don't get me wrong, but I have a better grasp of my feelings and am able to divert the feeding frenzy before it gets out of control.

It's easy to look for logical solutions to your problems, food replacement, throwing out all your junk food, ect, - which, don't get me wrong, are all wonderful ideas and definitely have their place in helping us all reach our weight loss goals - but often times the problem is deeper than the surface, and you can distract it for a while, but until you really face it, it won't really go away.

I could be full of it, and feel free to tell me if I am....I just felt like you were telling my story in a way.  :)

You ALL are so awesome!!!  Thanks so much.  Sometimes you just need someone to remind you what this is all for and how the end result is so much better than a temporary fix.  Thanks also for the great suggestions for sweet treats that are still "calorie wise".  I really appreciate the support.

I actually got pretty busy at work here after I sent my email, so your encouragement along with distractions have been very helpful.  Yea me!  Didn't get attacked by the Tiff's Treats cookie monster after all.   But, I must remember, she will strike again!

It's just so great to know I've got support here.  Thanks again!

This is awesome!  I'm so glad for all the posts.  This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!  I wasn't posting a problem I wanted an answer or advice about, I was merely stating my own situation as an example and giving opportunity for other women to voice their own ideas about the "ideal" and where they fit in it all or what they think about it.  I have to say, there are a bunch of awesome women out there and the responses to this post have greatly encouraged me!  Thank you ladies for your honesty, your transparency, and how real so many of you are.  Sometimes when I read some of these posts and all I see is "freak outs" over eating 200 extra calories over the daily allotment, I think, "there's got to be more to it than this."  Now I see there most definitely is!  Thanks!!  Oh, I'm also posting a picture so you all can see the face behind the blog.  :)

I think a couple things contribute to the negative responses.  I think people see this picture of a beautiful woman and many would LOVE to look that good, and they see this beautiful woman complaining about two pounds when many on this site are worrying about 20 or 120 pounds, not two pound.  Also, I think many do have much knowledge about health and fitness and assume you would know it's an unrealistic goal and maybe think you're just trying to get attention in posting it.  I think you've also got a lot of moms who know the importance of the baby's health coming first before any kind of weight loss.

Maybe I'm completely wrong on all these fronts - maybe not.  I hope you don' t get too discouraged from this site.  You'll find that there are many knowledgeable people here from whom you could probably learn a lot.  There are also some crazies, as there are on many sites.  You just have to filter out the mix - take what's good for you and leave what's not.

I hope the best for you.  Easy does it - take your time and take it slow and it will more than likely stay off.  Hang in there and remember to put baby first.  He is a beautiful gift in your life.   :)

Let me clarify just a bit.  I'm not talking so much about size, per say, but just giving it as an example.  What I'm really talking about is weight loss in general.  Is our primary motivation from within or is it primarily influenced by what the masses want us to believe?  I do believe we are society, you and me, but the media has a lot more control than we think and can fuel many of our thoughts.  Yes, we are individuals and we should think for ourselvels, I do agree with that.  But, often our thoughts are influenced largely by what we see advertised everywhere we look.

My question to you all is, imagine you are in a different world without any of those influences - would you be happy with yourself or would you still want to lose weight.  How much of you is influenced by others and how much is what you honestly believe about yourself without that outside influence.  I'm not trying to blame anyone or point fingers anywhere.  Please don't get me wrong.  I'm just trying to get people's perspectives on this mass societal objective of weight loss - I mean, it really is everywhere we look - on every news stand and on so many shows we turn on each day.  I do realize we're a nation that is very obese and hence the reason for a need for weight loss, but which came first (chicken or egg)?  Did people start getting obese because society's standard got so strict and the pendulum swung in the other direction or did the standard get strict because people started getting obese?  I also have to include that there was Twiggy in the 1920's (I believe that was the decade) and there wasn't a national obesity problem then.  Anyway, I'm getting way off topic now...but just curious about your thoguhts about all of this.

Weight Loss How do I control evening hunger? Jan 18 2008

Oh, one more thing.  If I am hungry at night and I don't do it the way I suggested in my last reply, I end up loading up on low calorie or low fat foods and still remaining completely unsatisfied, only to overindulge in the end anyway.  If I save up more calories for the night, I can have a little (and sometimes a lot) of what I REALLY want without feeling guilty or going over my limit.
Weight Loss How do I control evening hunger? Jan 18 2008

I've had the same problem in the past.  What I do now is eat about 1/3 of my total calories for the day before 5pm, and then save the last 2/3 for after 5pm, because that's usually when I tend to be the hungriest and/or when I want some sort of sweet or indulgence.  Since I've been doing this I find that I rarely even spend my total allowance or I have to almost make myself eat more so that I use all my calories for the day.

I know it's said that breakfast should be your biggest meal, and dinner your smallest, but it doesn't work that way for me.  I figure if you're not training for a competition or for sports, it doesn't really matter when you eat your calories.  Ideally you should spread them out throuout the day to help your metabolism, but if you're going to overeat at night and go above your calorie limit, which is the better option - saving more for the night time hunger and not going over your limit, or spreading them out through the day, still splurging at night, and exceeding your limit?

Anyway, I hope this helps - it has really helped with me, as I am almost always hungrier at night than during the daytime hours.

Weight Loss your weight in HIGHSCHOOL Jan 16 2008

You are in high school and have so many wonderful things to be thinking about other than your weight.  You are a beautiful young lady and that won't change with any weight change.  Focus on having fun with your friends, learning how to be a good student (this will majorly help you later in life), and have fun with sports if that's your thing - not because it burns calories, but because you're having fun!  This world is so caught up in body image and if you're worried at all at your weight, age, and height, it means there's too much focus on the magazines and not enough focus on being a kid.  Be a teenager and enjoy it!!!

I'm 30 years old and have been down that eating disorder road, but mine happened in college.  I wasted, I tell you, wasted, many many years worrying about the things in life that were completely unimportant for reasons that were entirely superficial, when I could have been focusing on the things that really  mattered - being a good friend, studying hard for my future, loving my family, and enjoying all the activities I love.  Don't start that road now - I'm here to tell you, it's a dead end.  It took me years to get past all the pain my eating disorder caused, and although I am so so so so much better now, I can't deny the ways in which  my past issues have affected my current life.  So, enjoy this time in your life and think about those things that are REALLY important in your life, not those that are based on materialism and are fleeting with the wind.
