| Fitness | Best energy gel during long runs | Nov 13 2009 20:45 (UTC) |

I have found that I like the gu brand gels the best for running. They are smaller, easier to fit in a pocket or pinned to your pants. I really like clif shots and use them for biking and skiing, but I find them too much to chew while I am running. I want something quicker and easier when I am running. My sister in law once brought along these jelly bean things while we did a long run and they were way too sweet and harder to eat. Another good trick is to see what kind of gel they are going to have during the race. Then if you plan on using it, you can train with it. It is also important to have water to wash it down. Either bring along a camelback, or the water belt thing. Or waterbottle in the hand. I usually take them every 45 min-60min. It depends on how long the run will be. Say it is a 2.5 hour run. I might take one at 1hr, then at 2 hours. or more often. They help so much. When I was marathon training and feeling sluggish I realized I hadn't taken my gel on time. And you seriously feel your energy go up. It is totally worth it. the most important thing is to use what works best digestion wise, and then use what you train with during the race. Good luck! |

Man I hear ya, drinking beer is sooo my downfall. And I only really like the good stuff, like IPA's and Ambers. Also my husband started homebrewing delicious scotch ales and pale ales.... At 150-200 calories per 12 oz, I can only have one or two only once a week, they are so addicting though! I have no solution on how to lose weight and drink beer, if I did I don't think I would be trying to lose weight ;) |

That's really funny. I haven't trained for a marathon in so long and I miss it so. I am thinking next year. Your thoughts were very familiar to me and what random thoughts go through my head as I run long runs (beer being an often thought and where can I find a bathroom being the other thought! :) Good luck with your training!

Thanks for the encouragement. Today has gone well so far and there are notes on the cookies to not eat them. I just need to keep my head up and keep trying. |

Thank you everyone for your advice! I ate fried foods and had a small beer and it tasted amazing!! Now I am back on the train and will be more healthy with food choices. I agree, I needed to get a little binge out of my system. This week, I will keep with my calorie deficit |

Hi ladies We could start with a new thread and see where it takes us? Any ideas for names? It could be.... Fun weightloss group, or the final weightloss, or losing it in 2009, ..... I also think we could post weights in the first thread by the author so then it shows up on the top of the page everytime you go to the thread. Hasta, if you want to continue updating that is great, I can also help. What do you think?

Hi snehvide- I was just thinking about this site and this post today as well. I hope you had a great holiday time and Hasta, I hope you had a nice time as well! I have been maintaining over the holidays. I need some routine after all of the hectic family stuff and too much food and no control over what is being served to me for a meal. My plan is to start an 8-week, mega program where I write everything down even if it is a 400 calorie dessert! I looked through my past info and I was at the same weight I am now at this time last year. So I need something big to shake off these 10 pounds! I won't be able to log in my weight on Friday as I will be out of town, but would love to start the week after that. June 4th is the start of my 8-week challenge. So a Friday weigh in would be good. happy new years! |

Sounds good to me. I went to aerobics this morning. I am going to try to work out as much as I can during this time so if I do slip up at least I have been working out. Day 1 Oatmeal and grapefruit, Mondays are easy to eat better :) Harder as the week goes on.... |

Hi Ladies, It has been too long. Maybe the challenge was too much :) Nice to see both of you posting again. I really need a kick in the pants to keep up the effort especially around this time of year. Hasta I hear you on the fluctuations. Although I have to say I am happy that I am moving up and down now below 140. snehvide-eating healthy snacks at night is great, I have such a hard time when my husband starts scooping ice cream at night, I am never hungry, but love ice cream! The weather here is getting colder. We have snow on the ground but it has been melting, I think the highs this weekend will be in the upper 30s -40s. But that is to be expected this time of year. Otherwise I have not been up to much, working, playing...eating (too much) :) But I would like to kick it into high gear before the holidays. I have two days of Thanksgiving this year and then December always means a lot of junk at the office. My goal is to not have the same new year's resolution as last years (at least the start weight will be lower!) Should we revive the Friday weigh ins? I am out of town this Friday but I was at 138 today. |

Week 1 Challenge This week I thought we could start with more of a brainy challenge. What exactly is your goal for the Holiday period, 8 weeks from now. The idea is to make it something realistic but also a challenge and would require a change in behavior. My goal is to reach and stay at under 135. I would also like to buy a new pair of size 6 pants to see family and friends (currently I am size 8). What are your goals? |

Hello everyone! ergmg Welcome! We weigh in on Fridays and Hasta updates it on page 2 of the thread. Hasta-Congrats that is so great! Isn't wonderful to not only have the number on the scale, but also feel better about yourself. Can't wait to see more success :) This week, my weight is up, which I expected. I was sick and did not exercise all week. My cold is gone now and I went to the gym yesterday and today so I am ready for some loss again! On Monday I will post the challenge for week 1 |

Hi all, Well the scale has not been my friend this week. I think the not working out for 7 days and having a head cold has caught up to me with weight. I think it is so amazing that it takes weeks of hard work to see a couple of pounds go down on the scale, but 1 week of not watching and it shoots back up 5 pounds.... Hasta-My scale does fluctuate, but it is not as exact as yours is, Mine only reads between .0 and 0.5, so I only know my weight as say 140 or 139.5. I am glad your team is doing so well. The badgers have really stunk this season. What does everyone think of an intensive 8 week effort to get ready for Christmas? It is exactly 8 weeks from today. I know that I need some extra motivation and I don't want to have another new year where I have to start over again! I would be willing to come up with some Monday Challenges to revive the motivation each week. What do you think? Not really looking forward to the weigh in tomorrow, but I need to keep me honest! |

Happy Friday everyone!! My weight is way down this week. I am at 135.5, I had to step on the scale 4 times to confirm it! I bragged to my husband and he gave me a dose of reality. "It's because you haven't been eating" He is right, my cold has really decreased my appetite. But I still thought I wouldn't lose as I have not exercised in 3 days.... ohwell. It has been nice sitting on the couch and watching movies, last night I watched Back to the future and it is still awesome after all these years! I hope everyone has a good weekend |

Happy hump day everyone! I hope you all are having a good week. My weight has been doing well this week, although now I have a cold. So I am trying to maintain as I don't have the energy to work out right now. Looking forward to Friday! I am hoping for a good weigh in and it is the first home Badger Hockey game, which is always a fun time! |

Hi everyone, Great work hasta!! You are doing awesome! It is always nice to reach new numbers. I am at 138, holding steady. It is time to kick it into high gear to break into 136ish world. Then closer to the goal of 135. I think I am going to use the last session at the YMCA from Nov-Dec to really mean business and take another spinning class. My goal is to be down a pants size and buy some new pants to wear for all of the Christmas running around. The weekend is here, time to buckle down and not gain back all that I have lost with beer and food! Happy Friday everyone |

Nice work ladies! I took a sneak peak this morning as well and I am still under 140 (138.5) so I am going to try to be good today so I see good numbers tomorrow. snehvide-I hope you had fun at spinning!? It is tough the first few times, I go to the Y and spin and enjoy the music (and the butt kicking :) Hope everyone has a nice thursday. It is starting to get cool here (mid-50s for a high today) but it is sunny so I am hoping to go for a run after work today. I very much like Fall and hope to have some nice weather.

Hi everyone! I am glad it is Friday and the weekend here is supposed to be beautiful. I am just about where I have been, 139. No complaining though because I am finally under 140 and that is a big step for me. I guess the whole weight loss thing takes longer than expected. It goes up and down for me too. I am happy to see the posts so far and look forward to reading everyone's weigh in. Snehvide-sounds like you have a fun night planned! I am going to have dinner with my parents tonight, and tomorrow watch the Badgers hopefully win a game. I hope everyone has a good weekend! |

Hi everyone, No weight post for me this week. I had 3 house-guests and was deemed the social organizer for the weekend. So I had to do countdowns to get everyone showered and out the door. I am sad that my friends are gone, but looking forward to only worrying about myself (and the dog and husband). Glad to see everyone checking in. I am all for a Monday-Thursday Challenge. After a weekend of food/beer I am ready to workout and watch what I eat. So I am all about starting that tomorrow and maybe even include the weekend :) I hope everyone had a good weekend and will chat this week :) |

Renekane-Sounds like it has been up and down for you in the recent months. Dieting is stressful for sure and not something that needs to be added to current stress. Maintaining can also be difficult, it sounds like you are healthy and wanting to be in a place where you are both healthy and happy with your weight. Venting is also important, I think letting others know what is going on helps release it from you a little bit. We are definitely here to help anyway we can. Whether it is a post or a healthy challenge. Time to look forward and work on being healthy! Katydid22-welcome to the thread! snehvide-I hear ya on the bags of candy, I am so glad that there is only ice cream in the house because when there are m&m's or donuts or anything at work, I can't stop myself. congrats on the run!! Good luck with the 10K. they are a lot of fun. balehead77-It is one big adventure in your house! I don't think I could keep up with it all! This week is going good so far, had a bit of a cookie setback over the weekend, darn my husband for making good food! Otherwise I have been working out and trying to avoid alcohol. This weekend is going to be a no-diet weekend. I have friends coming into town for a wedding and I think it is going to be a free for all. I guess I will just try to dance it all off! |

Good Friday Morning everyone! Well my weigh in was bittersweet. I am at 139. I was down yesterday so it is a lesson that popcorn and beer the night before a weigh in is a bad recipe. Ohwell. I have lots of plans this weekend to run around, and bike so hopefully I can take it all back! (or lose it all back?!) Anyway I hope everyone has a good friday. I can't wait to be done with work and go play outside! |

I get blisters a lot when I run, especially when it is warm out. I use vaseline between my toes or if you want to go high class you can buy body glide. This way the skin doesn't run and a blister will not form. It takes a little getting used to, but it works well. Body glide works well too, but is a bit more spendy and you may have to go to a specialty store to find them |

hasta-bummer to hear about about someone you care about having such loss. A sympathy card would not be over a line and you could find out if there is a memorial fund and give money if you would like. Bummer your weight is even, I know how much desire is there to see it go down. Are you watching the game tonight? It is on at our house. -balehead77, don't you love those mornings! Good job on your test, maybe all the stress pumped you up for a great exam! The weekend went well/ok for me. I decided to take a cheat day on Saturday and today I walked/ran 7 miles while my husband reffed soccer. So we shall see waht happens this week! |

great job snehvide! I personally am such a fan of running and need to increase my speed. Bananas are a good snack, lots of potassium! My weigh in went well this week, 138. I was so nervous that it wouldn't be down as I have been hovering around 140 all week, I guess it just finally popped down. Now this weekend I have to make sure I count, count, count, so even if I eat more than I should know how much. I hope everyone's weigh ins go how they want! |

snehvide-What a slacker!! That is terrible that he took your food and advantage of the situation. I am so protective of my food and space I wouldn't know what to do. Boys don't think sometimes. I am glad you were able to kick him out, send him packing! I don't know if I have a motivation secret, I just sincerely like running around and working out. Eating too much is my biggest problem. I love food and have a hard time stopping myself. I think the last 10 pounds are the hardest to lose. balehead77-I am glad you got some time to study. sounds like it worked out well! good luck with your studies. The sun is actually shining today so I am excited to be out in the 70 degree weather. I have to enjoy it now because you never know how long it will last. renekane-I hear you on the sushi thing it has been awhile for me and their food is so good!

Hi all, I hope everyone was able to do something fun over the weekend. I had a lot of fun doing the triathlon. Thank you for all the luck! I actually did pretty well, better than my race last year. Then the rest of the day was eating and sitting on the couch. I am also on my TTOM, so I will have to work through the cravings and the bloating. I hear ya hasta on the TTOM and how it can affect your work on the scale. balehead77- It sounds like things are getting pretty hard with your daughters injury. It is difficult to get workouts in and cook with so much going on. You mentioned studying. Have you tried reading while you walk on the treadmill? You may not be able to go very fast, but it might be better than sitting at a desk? renekane-sounds like things have been very busy for awhile now, but it is going to lighten up soon? I hope everyone has a good week! |

Hi everyone! Happy Friday! I am doing good, I am at the same I was last week, 138.5, but that is still down and going in the right direction. I have been trying really hard to write down everything I eat and exercise. Now the weekend.... My hardest time. I just need to really write stuff down. I am also doing a sprint triathlon on Sunday so that should help with the exercise part. snehvide-that is quite a generous thing, you must have gotten a good vibe from him on the plane. You can always back out of it if you want, it sounds like it was a somewhat loose invitation. Just make sure you are safe. I hope everyone has had a good week and has a good weekend! |

Balehead-what a weekend! I hope your daughter is feeling alright. hasta-I hear ya on the binge weekends. sometimes it gets tiring to be good all the time, it is a lot of work! and then to not see success because of it can really be a downer. Do you think you are gaining muscle if you are losing inches? Doing the whole diet thing has been very revealing to me; how hard it is, how easy it is to give up on yourself, and how long it can take. I myself had a dissapointment this morning. I tried to count my calories this weekend and exercised and I still gained 2 pound over the weekend. I don't know, maybe beer has more of an effect than just calories... |

Hasta-what a day!! I know I have been there before where everything that can go wrong seems to. Sometimes it is so bizarre that you just have to laugh. I also seem to find ways to be late to work even if I have plenty of time to get ready. I am glad you are doing well with exercise and that you feel better! :) Today my weigh in went well. I had to do it 3 times to believe the number (last night I had mac & Cheese and cookie dough) 138.5! I am getting there. Now the weekend. I am going to really try to count this weekend. I am going to the Badger football game tomorrow so the bloody mary's and burgers will be flowing. I just need to stay focused. I hope everyone weigh in's go well! Welcome Sweetiepumpkin! |

spinning is a little nuts, but you manage your own resistance so you can go as hard or not as you like. I like that there is music and someone telling you what to do. Something that I need at 6am, otherwise I don't do enough interval training. |
