what's vegan too, then? wearing wool or silk? (the production of silk is even more disgusting than fur)

Hi, just out of interest, what's un-vegan, or cruel about wearing wool?

Obviously having sheepSKIN, rugs or leather shoes or whatever is totally different as the animal had to die for you to get it's skin but the animals aren't harmed during shearing. If sheep aren't shorn every summer they can get heatstroke/heatstress.

Can anyone answer this as I am honestly interested? I was quite surprised to hear that vegans don't use wool!

It's because it comes from an animal. It doesn't matter if the animal died from it (that's more a vegetarian thing imo). Vegans don't buy/wear/eat anything from animals. Usually including honey. You don't have to kill a cow for milk but vegans don't drink it.

I must admit I've been lurking around this post since I've been getting email updates on it, even though I'm not vegan, and I'm wondering- do a lot of people just not understand what a vegan is? For example, here is a recent convo w/ a friend:

Me- I went vegetarian

him- You vegan!!

Me- No, I just don't eat meat- so I'm vegetarian not vegan

him- *confused look* ................ Vegan!

Me- *sigh*

I can handle cussing, in fact I do it myself quite a bit, but it just seemed out of place and unnecessary in this book. As far as "growing up a little" I think their use of it seemed childish, it's like they put the words in there just for the sake of using foul language and not to enhance their argument (and yes I do think foul language can help get a point across in certain circumstances, just not this one)

Weight Loss Why don't people acknowledge a small weight loss? Jul 22 2009

Original Post by kittybg:

When I saw your topic on the site's sidebar my first thought was: people or your mother?

Well, your last paragraph confirmed my thought. It's not that "people" don't acknowledge your weight loss, is that your mother doesn't. I told my mother that I lost 8 pounds. She looked me and said: "Are you sure? It doesn't show."

Talking about a cold shower.

So - just ignore her. Try to do better with your kids, if you have them. I'm determined to do so.

Good luck,

                Kitty

I meant people in general I just happened to use that as an example. Oh and no kids and never will *knock on wood* lol

tealparadise I know what you mean. It seems like a lot of people that have a LOT of weight to lose just go half way. Like one of the success stories I read in a magazine, this woman was a size 26 or something and got down to a 14. And I mean that's a HUGE difference but there's still more to be lost. I bet she got to where I am as far as it getting super hard to get those last pounds off and figured she looked so different and so much better that she didn't need to lose more. Ok idk if that's how she felt but it would make sense and I'm sure some people out there are like that. I'm all about people having self esteem, because I don't and I envy people that do, but you're right that sometimes people need to realize they should go a little further.

Oh and after I started complaining in this thread I went to the doctor and she said "you look good." So it could be from losing a little, or the fact that I'm happier, etc. But that made me feel a little better even tho it's one person. I tend to need the approval of others- maybe that's one reason I'm in therapy :P

Thanks! I think there are only certain parts of the workout that get my HR that high, most of it I believe is 150ish. For example about halfway through there's a minute and a half of "turbo time" which is pretty much a burst of super intense cardio. I guess since halfway through the workout you're HR might level off and that helps get it back up. So I'd say toward the beginning and during "turbo time" is when it gets so high.

I was just curious about the cals in the first place because I usually eat about 1300-1500 calories, depending on if I worked out that day, and if I happen to be burning 800 calories during the workout I might want to eat a little more so I don't end up with a 1000 cal deficit. But I'll probably just stick to the 10 cal/min thing since that's what the HR monitor said.

I usually get hooked on a certain type of food- for example my most recent one was mexican food. I always make it at home of course so I keep the cals under control, but it lasts for like a month. There is no telling how many bean burritos I made myself last month lol

Weight Loss Your Worst Binge! Jul 21 2009

I'm a recovering bulimic so some days I might binge off and on, some days I swear I'd eat 8000 calories or something, but of course I didn't keep it down >_<

*1/2 a cake, 1/2 medium pizza, 3-4 candy bars, box of cookies, milkshake, 4 donuts

That was most of my binges, one or two things might've switched w/ something else. I couldn't fit all that in my stomach, I was 5'5 115 pounds at the time, so I might stop 2-3 times to throw up during eating all that. Luckily it's been a couple months since I've purged.

My non-purge binges usually included just one or 2 foods. Like 1/2 a box of cookies and 1/2 a pizza or something. So they weren't quite as bad thank god. Can't believe I used to binge like that. Usually if I get the urge to binge now I try to "binge" on healthy foods that I've labeled as "bad." For example nuts, pasta, bananas, etc. So even if I rack up the calories it at least has some nutritional value.

I did my research and it seems like the people who don't follow the directions (aka not counting fat grams and thinking the pill is going to do all the work) are the ones who get the bowel issues.

That's what I don't get. If you're restricting your fat (and by doing that also restricting your calories) isn't that the reason you'd lose weight on it? Not because it's "blocking fat" but because you're getting a lot less than you were anyway. I tried to explain that to my cousin who's taking it but she won't take credit for her own weight loss anymore than she took credit for her weight gain.

I guess my HR gets so high b/c I'm out of shape? Idk, it's always been like that, I get winded really easily and my heart rate goes up really fast. There's a lot of jumping around which is what gets it up the fastest. I used my HR monitor (it was $30, so kinda cheap...hopefully it's pretty accurate) and it said when I get to 150 bpm I end up burning about 10 cal/min. So that's why I assumed that's what I was burning w/ this...

I figured the 1000 calories was a marketing thing, but it really is an amazing workout, and a lot of fun so I'm not JUST b/c I want to work out, it really helps burn off some steam. I'm just looking for a range of cals that I actually burn since it's definitely not 1000.

I was wondering the same thing. The good thing for me is I work at the Barnes and Noble cafe (basiclally Starbucks) so I'm on my feet the whole time, but I'm wondering if there are some things I can do to give my metabolism a little boost. Tbh I don't think there's much I could do b/c I'm in the eyes of the public the whole time and if I started doing tricep dips on the counter people would be like wtf? lol I try to walk as much as I can, like if someone needs to go to the back for a trash can I'll get it, etc.

It seems like there was an article for things you could do if you have a desk job using your desk and chair but I can't remember it- google should find it for ya

Original Post by toastyocie:

Depending on the person, 10-15 pounds isn't enough to notice. When a person is 5'8 and weighs 200 pounds, the person doesn't look any different 15 pounds lighter, but when a 5'2 150 pound person loses 15 pounds, it's way more noticeable because of their small frame... sooo i don't know how much you weigh, but that's one explanation as to why no one seems to be noticing! It's also a different story when people don't think you need to lose weight in the first place, so they try not to encourage it..

by the way I'm 5'5 135 pounds, was 145 when I started to lose. Maybe you're right that they don't want to encourage it.

Ummm it's a REALLY bad idea to restrict when you're recovering from bulimia- it'll lead to more bingeing which means more purging, etc and the cycle begins again. Try to eat as "normal" as possible.

Like I said I'm probably just being bitter, but it's so hard when you get close to your healthy weight (well actually I'm at a healthy weight, but I'd like to be 125-130) the weight just comes off so slowly and it's hard to keep it off. So when I DO lose and keep it off it'd be nice to have someone notice >_< But I notice and feel better so I guess that's all that's *supposed* to count, but still.

Foods Popcorn Jul 19 2009
22:28 (UTC)

I went to the movies and hadn't had movie popcorn in a loooong time and I got a small w/o butter just for fun and only ended up eating half of it b/c it was sooo salty and it gave me a horrible stomach ache :( So if you're not used to eating stuff like that anyway maybe you should pass just to save your stomach lol

and to jrabbit about making your own popcorn- I take a brown paper bag, put a couple tbsp popcorn in it, and spray some PAM on it and microwave it about 2 min or so. Then I spray a little i can't believe it's not butter on it and I found these super low cal popcorn seasoning things at meijer, that actually aren't too bad on sodium either, and I sprinkle that on it. It's delicious!

Hey I'm recovering from bulimia as well! I've been bulimic for a couple years, off and on, and started seeing a counselor a couple months ago.

I thought I could do it on my own but had to start seeing someone to do it and it's helped a lot.

My decision to stop had to do w/ an emergency room trip basically b/c of being so dehydrated mixed w/ having a panic attack :( So pleeease work at getting better b/c I don't want it to happen to you, it was scary.

Thanks for the advice, I made it through the day woo! I'm not getting on the scale for another day or 2 tho, it'll just stress me out. It was really busy at work so I was running around like mad for 4 hours which gave me a bit of a workout, especially since if I hadn't been working I would have been sitting on my butt- I'm pretty sedentary :(

But anyway you guys made me feel loads better, I think I just needed so encouragement, so thanks!

I didn't mention it but I'm recovering from bulimia and the fact that I didn't turn it into an all day binge, or purge in any way, shape, or form even tho I went over my calories makes me feel super good :D

Vegetarian Any "laid-back" vegetarians out there? Jul 18 2009

I actually just woke up one morning and gave up meat as well. I think a lot of vegetarians did it that way. You could always give it a shot, it's a lot easier than i thought it would be.

Vegetarian Any "laid-back" vegetarians out there? Jul 18 2009

There is no such thing as a "laid back vegetarian" at least by your definition. There are certain ingredients that some vegetarians don't pay attention to, for example mono/diglycerides can come from animal or plant sources, but the label never says which, same with rennet for cheese. Some vegetarians will go on and eat it anyway even if they don't know whether it's a plant or animal source. So that's what I'd call a "laid back vegetarian."

If you eat meat at all then you are NOT vegetarian. If you eat fish, and only fish, you are pescatarian. You can say "I don't eat very much meat" but you can't say you're vegetarian even if you only eat it once a month or whatever, And to be honest it's a good way to piss off dedicated vegetarians. There was a girl I knew that said she was vegetarian but still ate seafood- it drove me nuts. There's not an "all or nothing" definition like you stated, vegetarian means NO meat.

By all means, cutting meat even a little bit can help as far as health but like I said just say you don't eat very much meat.

Weight Loss Where does weight go overnight? Jul 18 2009
12:28 (UTC)

I think the answer is much more simple than what people are saying. Food and water weighs quite a bit in your stomach. Drink 2 glasses of water and you may find you gained a pound from it! Only initially of course until it's distributed in your body, etc. So all night for 7ish hours you haven't eaten or drank anything. So there's nothing in your stomach to add weight. So before bed your weight might include some of what you had for supper or a snack, as well as any drink, etc. By morning it's no longer sitting in your stomach. Well I guess it's still kinda with you until you go to the bathroom, but still. Makes sense to me. Have you ever weighed yourself after you ate? You'd be amazed.

Weight Loss Why is So Hard To Find Clothes For Overweight People? Jul 17 2009
18:00 (UTC)

Original Post by liz-usa:

No, the government taxes cigarettes ("sin tax") in order to discourage smoking.  Public places no long allow smoking because of the adverse effects on other people, i.e. lung cancer from second-hand smoke.  Whether or not this will affect people's motivation to quit smoking is irrelevant.

So, if you want to make a comparison between smoking and plus-size clothing, you're either going to have to argue that being overweight has an adverse effect on other people (offensive) or propose that we tax plus-size clothing (also offensive).

Being overweight can be just as harmful to one's health as smoking- that's where the connection is.

Also as far as it being hard to find clothes for smaller people, my ex wears 32/34 pants and it's a pain going shopping with him, he can't be picky because he just can't find enough options. I think you might be taking it a little too personally, anyone outside an "average" body type is going to have trouble finding clothes. When I was little I wore "slim" pants and it was always hard to find those too.

Foods Carbs are not the freaking enemy Jul 17 2009

Original Post by sybil878:

2) low carb isn't unhealthy and blanket statements with no supporting evidence like 'Low carb diets are UNHEALTHY' only serve to promote misinformation rather than allowing people to make their own informed decision on how to eat

It makes your body go into ketosis that can lead to muscle and bone loss, a lot of times you nearly cut out an entire food group, usually they're higher in fat and cholesterol because the dieter eats a lot of meat, increased risk of heart attack, calcium is pulled from bones because of an excess of protein, and this is kinda besides the point of nutrition but when things are labeled "low-carb" a lot of times they drive the prices up so some things will be more expensive.

I wrote a paper on the dangers of low carb diets for a nutrition class, I just don't think people know how dangerous they can be.

You know that that amount is too low. Maybe you'll lose but you'll be malnourished in the process, it's almost impossible to get all your nutrients on such a lot amount- I should know I used to have an eating disorder. And btw you're not headed down a good path. First it's 800 calories, then 600, then before you know it you're justifying 200 calories a day. I think you'll find if you eat 1500ish calories you'll feel just as good, and even better because you're getting the nutrients you need.

I've heard that but I can't imagine drinking a big glass of milk after a workout, I'd probably puke... ugh... but I don't drink dairy milk anyway so maybe that's why I'm so grossed out.

I'll stick to my protein shakes.

Plus chocolate milk, especially with whole milk, has a lot of sugar, fat, and calories.

Yup you don't *need* low carb food. Sometimes looking at the ratio of carbs/protein/fat looks kinda off because carbs take up so much but they're supposed to! I've vegetarian so I get a LOT of carbs and it doesn't inhibit my weight loss at all.
