| The Lounge | My husband and I have chosen NOT to have children. Want to lecture me? *lol* | Aug 06 2007 23:35 (UTC) |

| First, I think it's fine if you don't want to have kids. I know plenty of people that have also made the decision. I'm 28 and I still don't feel a clock ticking or that maternal itch. Even though I just got my second puppy. lol. My husband is wishy washy as to whether he wants kids. Sometimes it's no and sometimes it's "Don't u think life when we're older will be pretty lonely?". I sometimes think I could handle the whole kid thing, but I also recognize the huge sacrifice you make...especially as a woman with work, mothering, body etc. Most of the time I just don't think I want kids. I worry my husband will and I still won't.
When do you know for sure if you want kids? You can't just take the plunge on this one. |

| I used to take a slice or cookie or whatever home to my hubby cause he loves sweets. But now he's on here too trying to lose a few pounds. Of course when you can have like 2200 calories a day like he can, you can have a freakin' cookie! LOL. | |||
| Foods | No-Fail breakfast ideas? | Jul 31 2007 19:00 (UTC) |

| I've recently been enjoying a quick homemade breakfast sandwich for only 270 calories. Use an egg product mostly made of whites. 2 eggs = 60 cal, low fat string cheese = 80 cal and whole-wheat english muffin = 130. Add salsa, tomato, herbs if you want to spice it up.
I also like 1/2 cup cottage cheese with fruit. |

| Thanks for the tips lucychris. I too have been battling shin splints. Nothing seems to work, but I'll try these things as well.
Best of luck robyneg! I gained weight in part to stopping running because of those nasty lil shin splints. |

| Weight Loss | Re-starting on the wagon...help! | Jul 27 2007 20:55 (UTC) |

| I fell off the wagon too for like the past month or so and am trying desperately to get back on. Atleast I've started logging in here again; I had been ignoring CC. I'm 28, 5'7" 164 lb trying to get to 143 lb. I joined Jan 07 at 190lbs and lost 30 lbs by May or so. I'd be happy to help motivate you and in turn it may keep me back on.
We can do it!! |

| Right. And in my hayday I dated alot of them. ;0) And plenty of Americans live in other countries too.
This post just reminded me that alot of Americans when asked their nationality don't say American. Some have done that in this post. |

| I met my husband via online dating 4 yrs ago. I'd reccommend it especially if you move somewhere where you don't know anyone. That can make it hard to meet people. That's why I did it...just to have some fun on the weekends...I wasn't trying to meet that special someone really...and whatyaknow 1yr 1/2 later I was married. | |||

| Thanks alot! I certainly don't want to gain back what I've lost. Perhaps if I did start gaining it would motivate me to get back on the diet wagon. LOL. I'll get there. I'm stressed and in a diet rut. This too shall pass. THANK YOU for the kind advice and encouragement. | |||

| Health & Support | birth control and weight loss | Jul 25 2007 22:55 (UTC) |

| I've heard that birth control causes weight gain; heck it says it's a possible side effect. Perhaps that's why I've been at a plateau for like 4 months...could it be the birth control? The problem with birth control is there are so many different ones and each affects the so many different women that take them differently. If you suspect birth control as the cause for your weight gain then perhaps talk to your doctor about trying a different one. I've tried 3...and third time was the charm for me. | |||
| Weight Loss | Breakfast question | Jun 25 2007 22:27 (UTC) |
4 |
| Breakfast is important. It kick starts your metabolism and helps with energy and mood. I'm not a big breakfast eater, so I just have a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and some fruit. Sometimes I'm not in the mood for "breakfast" food at all and eat fish or some other thing I might eat for lunch or dinner. Protein shakes could be an easy way to get breakfast down too. | |||
| Weight Loss | late period/dieting | Jun 25 2007 22:21 (UTC) |

| I'm not suggesting you are obsessive or anorexic, but my college friend stopped having her period when she wasn't eating enough and exercising a lot; she's about your height and weight. Perhaps you should check in with your doctor about your body fat % and how it can affect your period if this problem persists.
Otherwise, you could have just had an irregular month. Stress can effect periods too. I'm really regular but there has been one or two times that I completely skipped a month due to high stress. |

| I am so glad I read this! I lost my first 30 lbs like nothing - Jan to May. Now that I'm at 160 with a goal weight of 143 (I'm 5'7") it hasn't been coming off. I've been on a month and a half plateau! I like the way I look and feel, but really want to reach my goal. I guess I'll just have to be more patient. Apparently the less you have to lose the harder it is. We can do it! | |||

| What about pilates? There's lots of weight training you can do that doesn't require standing or perhaps spin or bicycling. I have high arches that haven't fallen yet and bicycling sometimes gives me a foot cramp, but other than that it could be a nice alternative.
Get creative...I'm sure you'll find something. |

| Weight Loss | It's official I've hit a major plateau... | Jun 11 2007 22:16 (UTC) |

| I'm happy just a bit frustrated because I'm eating healthy (kind of always have), watching my portions, doing lite exercise that I know I'll be able to keep at even after the diet. And yes I allow myself treats.
Your advice is great though. Mind set is very important. I'll squash my frustration, stay happy and stay moving. Hopefully the plateau will break soon! |

| Foods | Barefoot Contessa? | Jun 11 2007 20:29 (UTC) |
10 |
| The very few times I've seen her show the recipes have been very heavy on the fat (fattening) side. Lots of heavy cream etc. I do however agree that eating natural, organic, tasty and low-fat is tons better for you than chemical-laden, processed foods even if albeit fat-free. It is a matter of control- portion control. So in that regard you could eat a Contessa recipe, just in small portions. | |||

| Thanks everyone for the support and advice. Sometimes you just need to hear some encouragement! I will try upping the calories this week and see what happens.
Also, when I exercise I do eat most of the calories burned back. (which means I eat more than 1200 when exercising) I do the math and keep my deficit around 600 calories. I started varying my exercise this past week too to see if that will help. I will be elated when the scale hits 161!! Thanks again. |

| Weight Loss | Who else has been this stuck? | Jun 06 2007 00:29 (UTC) |

| elin is right. Increase your deficit between calories consumed and calories burnt. Try to have a deficit between 500-1000 calories a day. I usually stay around 500. I too started in Jan and lost 25 lbs, BUT I've been stuck for the past month and a half.
So hang in there! It's tough but we can do it. |

| turkey products, like turkey bacon, sausages. Chicken sausages, like apple chicken or tom basil, baked tofu, cottage cheese, different fish like mahi mahi with jerk spices or the like. Curry can be made lowfat with skim evaporated milk and coconut milk. Sauer Kraut, pickled cabbage...get a cookbook and jazz up what you already eat with different spices, salsas etc. Soups can offer low cal vareity too.
Hope this helps. |

| I just set my settings to sedentary and only log exercise activities. I don't log doing laundry, cooking, sleeping or the like. I think those things are included in the sedentary calories. And yes I've been losing weight. 27 lbs so far!
Also congrats on quitting smoking! I quit a few years ago after chain smoking like 2 1/2 packs a day for 10 years. I don't ever want to smoke again and I don't have any cravings. It's great! Hope I helped. |

| I also weigh in in the morning. Whatever time you choose just be consistent i.e. stick with that same time every day/week. I weigh myself every day, but I also know my bodies routine and don't get too upset when I go up after the weekend because by the end of the week I'm usually a pound or two lower than the lowest weight the week before. ;0). Good luck! We can do it! | |||

| I used to run 4 1/2 miles every other day for a year and then shin splints stopped me in my tracks. I still struggle. Before that I used to run a lot and then got them and took a year off...then I was fine for a year...and now...nope. I've gotten all kinds of advice, some new here...so I'll give it a try. I love to run and it kept me really thin and healthy. If I didn't have the ol' shin splint prob I prob wouldn't be on here. LOL. anyhow without running I've lost 25 since Jan...with some walking. So don't give up. | |||
| Weight Loss | alcohol and weight loss | Apr 27 2007 00:43 (UTC) |
|
| If you quit drinking alcohol most likely you'd lose weight; that is as long as your calorie intake without alcohol is an amount that would allow weight loss. You can diet and drink and lose weight you just have to include the calories you drink into your calories for the day. I also love wine (heck last year I worked at a winery) and do drink almost everyday and I've lost 25 lbs since Jan...and as of my recent physical am in great shape. Yes, all in moderation. | |||
