Weight Loss survey for bodybugg/gowear fit users with a BMI of 35+ Apr 30 2009
15:52 (UTC)
2

I am 6'1, 279, 36.8 BMI (down from 356/47). I bought a GoWear Fit armband on April 22nd and have been using it pretty religiously since. GoWear do state that the readings can be off by 10% during low physical periods and 5% off during high physical periods.

I found the readings to be surprising at first. I just generated a 7-day report and it claims that I burn on average 4145 calories a day, I consume 3269 leaving an average deficit of 876 a day. This is sharp contrast to what CC suggested. They claim I burn 3070 a day under the moderate activity setting. I usually burn 500 cals extra 3x a week at the gym. Incorporating this into CC's estimation would leave an average burn of 3285 / day. Although, CC of course can't monitor exactly what I'm doing all the time; I teach which does require extra movement, I also walk around campus a lot etc etc. As a result, I've upped my calories a little to try to get a ~750 daily deficit. I'm yet to weigh myself this week and when I do I will post the values.

The only 'calibration' I've been able to do is compare the readouts on the cardio machines I use with the armband. When I'm on the elliptical burning my 500 in 30 mins, it claims an average cals/min at around 17/18. The armband said I was doing between 16-19 during that time. Also when I run / jog the armband gives very similar numbers to CC, maybe off by 5-10%. The difficulty there is correctly computing your average speed (I hate the treadmill).

As for BMR. The BMR for my weight is 2555 (http://www.bmi-calculator.net/) and the BMR for my ideal weight is 1938. According to that I should currently be burning 1.7 cals/min resting. The armband says I burn 1.8-2 cals/min while resting. This isn't off by any stretch.

I have confidence in the GoWear fit. I wasn't loosing before I got it and it might be because I was eating too little. I was consuming ~2500 a day. If I really am burning ~4145 a ~1645 calorie deficit seems a little steep. I will give this a month or 6 weeks using their numbers strictly and see what happens before modifying anything.

Having the data the GoWear gives you is fantastic IMO. The pedometer is really accurate (I took 24 steps going to the bathroom at 3:30am last night haha), the sleep meter is cool, the calorie burn graph is great and how it tracks your physical expenditure is really useful.

Frankly, I think the food database is better than CC's. The interface is a bit more fiddly to use, but overall easier to enter your data than CC's once you get used to it. The food database is really comprehensive and quick to access.. For example I can just type "kas cho" to get the kashi chocolate cherry tlc bar immediately. The food breakdown could be better, CC does win in that respect and there is no diet "grade".

I only wish the following:

1. It was waterproof (could swim with it)

2. It monitored your heart rate / pulse ox.

3. It could tell you your body fat %

4. It sync'd over bluetooth / wifi.

5. There was a LCD readout on the band, not a $100 watch extra.

(I know 2/3 would skyrocket the price and might be technologically infeasible).

To sum up, I don't think its overestimating by much. I think its safe to cut the number by 5% and be right on the money. I love having it constantly track my expenditure. I don't know if its successful yet, but I am tracking EVERY bite of food honestly; I will weigh some time and post the results.

Really good tips from both of you. I like the idea of reintroducing grilled cheese sandwiches. I've found that spraying that spray butter on the outside of the bread gives it the nice grilled brown effect without making it too greasy and calorific (depends on how you like your grilled cheese I spose!). The problem is that after a grilled cheese I want to cut off another hunk of extra sharp cheddar and stuff it in my noggin. Its a matter of will power I guess, I just notice it getting tougher.

I have started always eating oatmeal in the morning. 1 cup of quakers (with water) is 300 calories and feels like it could feed an army. Great thing is you can throw in some honey or chopped fruits / cinnamon and its tasty tasty. I think I'm just going to have to be smart and plan for some evening snacking and reduce total calories throughout the day, maybe grab some popcorn / baby carrots or something who knows.

Thanks for the replies, good help.

Well guys this was exactly what I wanted (in addition to the groans of the guys realizing this topic wasn't QUITE about the boobs they might have wanted hehehehe)

I know my jugs have gotten smaller because when I grab them they just feel that less 'full' but I would really like to be able to wear a shirt and look ok apart from the tits jutting out all over the place? Ah well I'm ok with it and I'm sure they will go down. I'm going to loose these last 50 odd. I've always been a big chap, I'm 6'1 so I held 356lbs better than many 5'6"s at 250 lbs and I'd like to stay big. I guess eventually I'll have to go from weight loss to increasing muscle mass.

Thanks for the weight lifting tips too - I've just really gotten into it (since March) so I'm trying to fit it all in around my graduate degree. I suppose if my goal is to really build mass there I need to adjust my workouts accordingly.

Have to add my 2 cents here! Apple just came out with new iPod nanos. They come in 9 colors and boast a proper sized screen for watching videos if you would do such a thing in the future. I can't work out without my iPod as I get SO bored on the machines...These new iPods are pretty much the best nanos they've come out with to date...

If you are rambuncious when you work out you might want to get an iPod Shuffle. The pro's are its price and that it has a clip right on it. The cons are that it doesn't have the fancy screen...

You said you were techno challenged? Do you have mp3s on your computer? If you install iTunes on your Apple or PC it lets you easily rip CDs to mp3 files (AAC files by default) which can be played on your iPod. You can also buy songs from the iTunes store for a buck each. Or, if you have a teenager in your house, you can have access to all the music in the world ;)

The small zune is also a nice device. Its butt horrible to use (I bought an iPhone just to rid myself of the disgust of using it) but their (Microsoft's) music store is much better value. You can pay a monthly fee to have unlimited music from their store, which for some is a real bonus.

Bottom line, if you get a nano, you will want an arm band. If you want to listen to tunes while working out, get a shuffle.

He is famous with much notoriety yes, I just cringe at the word celebrity. He is a public servant who we are deciding whether to bestow the privilege of being in charge of us all. He needs to be tested, scrutinized and accountable, not some venerable demigod to be enamored with just cause he walked into a room.

Foods What's so bad about McDonald's french fries? Jul 29 2008
16:40 (UTC)
21

Yeah to answer the "whats so bad" question is to point out that you aren't eating just potatos + oil. Sure at some point I think there was a potato, but its what ELSE you are eating that shares the s**t out of me...

Fries are frozen, then they are tossed into hot oil? Why doesn't it erupt like when you throw an ice cube into a pan of hot oil? Butane. Butane is infused within the potato mash to stop this process from happening. They also spray butane and other preservatives into the bags so that they can be stores in a freezer for 18 months at a time.

Plus, I don't know how much of Supersize me I believe, but I'm pretty sure they drop in other chemicals (much like MSG) which trick you into eating it and feeling good while you do. Why don't you crazy other fries? Is it really the taste? Coke tastes like s**t, but the caffeine just makes it slip down sooo easy.

I've never done it, but I know you can order ingredients off the web. You essentially get shipped to you the spices, herbs, broth bases etc and all you do it put it together with some sort of meat / veg etc... Maybe if you can find a website you can trust somewhat, this might be for you...

I cannot the remember the source but it was some famous dietitian who reminded us that alcohol is the first energy burned by the body. A real metabolism buster as as soon as its introduced, classic digesting is slowed while this energy source is used first.

I say branch out. Try Indian, Thai, Burmese, Japanese food... Get a few good cook books off eBay / library / borders etc and see what they have to say. Personally, doing this opened my palette to a whole whole whole new world of flavor and interesting yet crazily delicious and healthy foods. Indian food is the best IMO. Beware, the stuff you get out of a restaurant is lathered in oil / butter. You need to really stick to a cook book or even modify the recipes a little, but at the end of the day you can create hundreds of new meals you'd never tried before... Eventually baked chicken + broccoli will be an exotic change!

I don't know how much more I can really contribute to this, but being married to a doctor gives me a daily lecture on NUTRITION over calories practically every day. Here's what I've picked up... Sure a calorie is a calorie is a unit of energy, therefore, your body will get the same amount 'energy' from 10 teaspoons of olive oil vs. 25 heads of lettuce, but its not getting everything else it needs. I think the same is true with the burgers and fries, the body isn't getting what I needs from ground beef, treated flour bread and fried mashed potatoes.

The body needs more chemicals than you could imagine... Sodium & potassium directly control how your body regulates heart rate for example... The body needs zinc / calcium / [insert more here] as well as really whacky crap like arachidonic acid (found in peanuts and SPIDER BLOOD!). What does it all do with this stuff? Well I think 8 years of intensive biology education will give you some answers, but not all of them. Cells need to eat; hormones need to flow, bones need to rebuild etc.

So what's the point of this mini lecture? Mostly to remind you to keep nutrition your number one objective over calories. I really believe its a cents-to-dollars analogy. (treat your cents like your dollars and your money will take care of itself?) If you really endeavor to maintain quality nutrition, you will probably be eating low calorie food. Of course this isn't an axiom. Its confusing, so, I would just let Calorie Count do the counting for you. Keep your salt under the amount it suggests, keep your fats where it suggests and try to always get an A!

I am pretty un-enchanted by companies' nutrition info posted on their websites, or the labels for that matter. This is a pretty good example. I bet you somewhere somebody is exploiting some technicality... Do they have to show pre-cooked calories? served calories? can they include/omit other toppings? Can starbucks omit the space occupied by ice in a frap? Seeing as calories are McD's biggest enemy I would hazard to say yes.

I agree it is a little disconcerting when an authority on calories provide conflicting information.. Do you know how these get posted? By users or admins? Maybe somebody is upping the calories to de-influence users to grab something else.

Personally I would average the two. The process of computing calories is an inexact science and your body will pick and choose exactly which components of the food to eat; it'll probably just pick up all the drugs they put in that food to trick you into liking it (don't eat it, save your intestines!).

Have you ever worked fast food?

Just reporting weigh-in news, I haven't done it in a while!

I weighed myself today and I was (with clothes on, and sweaty (nice mental picture for you all))..............................

328.6lbs!!! which means I've lost 27.4lbs since joining a couple of a months ago!

My clothes feel looser, my belt is a notch smaller (actually, its the first notch but at least it gets around me now!) and I can kick it up at the gym just as hard as anyone else.

I've joined an amateur racquetball club at the university and play for usually 1.5 hours 3 days a week!

Appologies for how fragmented this is, but I've got code compiling and I'm trying to write this before it's done! Good luck to all, keep me inspired!

Many thanks for all the tips and suggestions.

1800 cals wasn't really intentional, it just sorta happened (heh!). I was trying to restrict myself to healthy sandwiches for lunch, salad / pasta / fish / soup for dinner and just never got over 2000, but felt very full! I suppose I can afford to spend some more on some fiberful snacks to take away the hunger pains... I'm sure its not thirst as I am pretty much surgically attached to my water bottle! In fact sometimes I drink TOO much water ;)

Just to report, in 4 weeks I have lost 21 lbs and I'm now down to my mini-goal 1 of 335!!!! x 10. As soon as I buy a battery for my scales I should be able to get my weight to register, which was the reason for my first mini goal!!! Hopefully it won't be too long until I'm under 300.

Another question about weight training. Do you guys do it every day, or not? Do you focus on groups or do a certain set of muscles each time you work out. Tips greatly appreciated!

Hello guys, I need some advice. -- I'm always hungry!

I've been on the wagon for 4 weeks now and before that I was always hungry too, but in a different way. As I said when first joined I was a food pig, and I always wanted to be "full". This time it's different... I have made the necessary life changes and I'm on the righteous path so to speak, but now I'm always hungry. Its the kind of hungry where your stomach is really saying "I'm all out, give me something!". It sorts hurts too and its driving me insane. It doesn't make me want to eat a whole cake, but it is on my mind all the time. I try to pack snacks but its not always feasible when life travels at 200mph.

I suppose I'm asking a few questions in one. Did anyone else experience it in this way when loosing weight? How did you cope / deal with it?

Also, I've been exercising daily. Does this mean I actually have to increase my calorie intake at all, or should I keep it low? I've been trying to hit 2000(ish) each day and 80% of the time I'm hitting 1800 tops (Male, 24, 344lbs).

Hello everyone,

This is a general question about everyone's feelings on weight resistance training. i.e. Do you do it, when did you start doing it and what do you do?

This is week 4 of my weight loss program. When I started going to the gym I kept saying to myself "I'll just stick to the cardio machines and maybe weight train when I loose more weight". I'm starting to feel more comfortable at the gym these days, and although I'm still in the 'honeymoon' phaze of this endeavour I would still like to mix up my workout routine to make it fresh and to not go crazy from boredem.

I also read / hear stuff about how muscle motaboilzes fat efficiently and having some more of it around would also help loose more weight. I've not got the definitive answer on these sorts of questions and I hate relying on hearsay. Being in grad school I have a large supply of doctoral students to choose from, but they can't give me a straight answer either!

So again I just want to know what you guys have done, and, in your experience what seems to work, and what doesn't?

Yes it does feel very very good. I like my way of life now. Getting to the gym every day feels great, keeps me out of the house, and when it cools down a little I'm sure I can find nice places outside to exercise. I forgot how good *real* food tastes, and I cringe whenever I see the prepackaged garbage so many of us throw down our necks.

Its nice to see results so early on and like the prospect of buying SMALLER clothes for a change!

Hey Guys, this is my first weight loss report:

Weight lost so far: 12lbs!

This is the start of my fourth week and its definitely working. A few of my shirts feel looser as well as some of my pants. I'm down to 344 from 356 and it has not required HUGE sacrifices. Simple counting has let me keep things like chocolate cake / ice cream as occasional items in my diet as long as I account for them and eat what a human should eat not a small family ;)

335 is my first mini goal, hopefully not too far away!

Hi all -- quick question for anyone who started at a weight over 350lbs. How much weight did you loose in your first week?

My quandry is as such. My digital scales at home won't tell me my weight as I'm over the limit, and the only scales I have access too are the ones at the gym. Its one of those ones where you have to slide a block across a bar and wait until it is level. Well the dumb thing won't tell me straight what I weigh. I put it to 345 and it hovers, then drops. I put it to 355 and it does the same. I sorta got it around 346. I started at 356 and I've been averaging 2200 cals/day and exercising 30 mins/day at the gym. Could I really have lost 10 lbs in 7 days? It seems too high to me.

I hear things such as loosing initial water weight i.e. your fat cells shed water and essentially 'shrink', but aren't used for energy, but I've been drinking like a fish, around 2 or 3 liters a day.

Can anyone shed some light on their first week weight loss experiences? Thanks!

Well thanks to everybody who've welcomed me so far, and thanks for the good tips. I find the success stories on here quite inspiring!

After 5 days into my exercise / food control I already feel cleaner, healthier and energized, plus a little bit more mature being able to say "no".

BTW - to the admin(s), I've seen some talk on here about some sort of ticker, tracking collective weight loss or something of that nature. If I can be of assistance, let me know. I'm a grad student in computer science, so I know my way around the odd line of code. I might be able to help you figure something out, even write something.

Greetings everyone. I'm Glad I stumbled upon this forum and plan to make good use of it as a venting outlet / advice source. I'm also glad to have a place where I can talk about *me* and not feel like a inwardly focused moron who would appear vain and arrogant in other circles.

So, I was looking into the family bag of cheeto's I had just consumed last week and asked what in the hell am I doing to myself? I know what my problem is, I love food! I love all food, from the nasty junk you shouldn't even buy, to the expensize gourmet food you would have to be insane to even taste; my problem is that its gone too far. Instead of eating a slice of brie, I would eat a wedge. Instead of a simple 8oz steak, I would buy a 20oz'er and scarf away. I found myself sneaking in a trip to McDonalds BEFORE going home to dinner -- my lowest point I think. I thought going from 300 to 330 wasn't THAT bad, but going from 330 to 356 was the final straw. I also realized that I was addicted to food. I always had to have a full belly and a meal wasn't a meal unless I stuffed myself stupid, thus, this will be the primary challenge of this adventure, I think.

I guess this is my mission statement: I am finishing my 1st year of a PhD. I have at least 4 more to go. The first time the university calls me "doc", I want to weight under 200 lbs.

Luckily my school has amazing fitness center (imagine Walmart full of equipment / gyms) and can easily get 30 minutes on an elliptical in before hitting in the office so that base is covered. My biggest challenge will be the food. This is day 4 of my new mantra "you aren't hungry, you don't need it" and so far it's working. I keep my trusty water bottle full and my work keeps me (thoroughly) entertained between meals. I've lined up my week's meals and my average calories I plan to keep around 2500 (this is a life long commitment we're talking here!).

Once I get under 300, I think I'm going find a sport or two to pursure. Problem is that being 356 lbs, I fear hurting my knees / ankles.

Well, I think my spiel is over, thanks for reading, and good luck to anyone else who is in my boat, and everyone else on the board. Thanks in advance for the support I'm sure I will receive.
