Weight Loss Fat Forever? Aug 17 2008

2

I was thin growing up (5'9" 125 lbs at 18), then gained weight (180), then lost it again when I fell in love (150), then gained it again when we broke up and never lost again (now 235).  I know when I start trying to lose weight, I obsess about food and exercise, until one day I just grow resentful of all the restrictions and throw it all to the wind! I've also tried not thinking about it, and just trying to choose healthier foods and choose more activity. That didn't work either; I've maintained this weight for six years doing that. I've been over 225 lbs for a decade now, and as I get older it gets so much harder to lose!

So now I know I need to ramp up my activity, log my food (!) and quit indulging myself, BUT I also have to figure out how to keep a balance so that I don't obsess and burn out. So I've decided to set a goal to run a mini-triathlon next summer. This will get me in a workout schedule with a PURPOSE. I've also decided to try to make more vegetarian choices (not my favorite, but the food is better for me) and keep a close eye on portions.

I'm fighting an underactive thyroid AND sleep apnea, both of which slow down metabolism. I figure my only real hope is to increase my muscle mass, because muscle burns more energy.

I'll let you know how it goes.  :)

Weight Loss Night time eating? Feb 25 2007

there's no good reason to not eat before bedtime if you haven't eaten enough during the day.

Stopping eating at night is just a way to quit pushing more calories into a body that's already had enough.

I'm not exactly sure I understood your post, but I'm going to answer to what I think you said.

Here's my experiment:

I lost ten pounds in three weeks. Then I noticed myself starting to get obsessive about food, and other bad feelings that I've noticed have hindered me in the past. So I decided to "lighten up" for awhile, maintain for a couple of weeks, and just make sure that I can live with maintenance level.

That was about three weeks ago. I've stopped "officially" logging my food, but I keep it logged every day in my head. I'm letting my habits and my newfound knowledge guide me, just to see where it takes me and whether I will need to adjust any attitudes or habits from here on out.

So far, I have maintained. Yay! And I have eaten foods that I want, foods that I would have felt incredibly guilty about eating back when I didn't have the knowledge of how weight loss works. I would have considered myself a "failure" back then, and gone ahead and binged since the day was "blown" anyway.

Well, not anymore. I have the knowledge and the habits and the smaller stomach to help guide me. And I'm really not obsessing, I'm not hungry, and I don't feel deprived.

I've really managed to reassure myself that once I reach goal, I won't have any trouble maintaining. As long as I don't go crazy and forget everything I've learned.

And now I feel it's time to start on the next ten pounds again.

ooh, I just figured out italics! :)

before the word (or whatever you want to italicize), you put the "less-than" symbol. Then you put the letter 'i', then follow it with the "greater-than" symbol.

After the word, you do the same thing, but before the letter 'i' you put a forward slash.

/i (surrounded by carats)

kindof off topic, but here's a conversation I overheard last month at Whole Foods store. Two male shoppers were talking right behind me.

Man 1: Free range chickens. Hm. Let me tell you something about that. My sister is a farmer, she raises chickens. You know what the standard for "free range" is? The farmer has to allow access to the outside. So what these farmers do is, their chickens live inside most of the year just like every other chicken in the industry. But for TWO WEEKS a year, the farmer opens the outside door, and "allows" them to go outside. Well, the chickens don't know what to do with that because they've never been outside before, so they just stay inside where they feel safe. After two weeks, the farmer closes the door. Now he can label his chickens "free range", because they had the opportunity to go outside.

Just sayin', it's just what I overheard.

If you go back and edit, you'll lose your original formatting.

The key is the carat symbol (less-than and greater-than symbols), with your instructions inbetween.

To get a break between paragraphs, start with a less-than symbol. Then put in the letters 'br', then follow with a greater-than symbol.

If I write it out for you, the symbols disappear. :(

I haven't figured out italics yet, sorry.

If you've increased your fiber intake recently by a lot, that could be what's making you feel so bloated. Lots of fruits & veggies can do that, but only at first. As soon as your body gets used to the new levels, you'll feel OK again.

They're suggesting surgery rather than a pill? Your thyroid must be pretty messed up. Be sure to take care of it, or you won't be able to conceive if you want to, besides feeling tired, cold, dry skin, mentally slow, etc. LOTS of symptoms that can be fixed with treatment.

Go back to the doc and ask if there's anything can be done short of surgery.

Also, check out the information at http://thyroid.about.com/

for lots of info and support.

I guess I can just post my calorie numbers for each day. Rather than posting everything i ate. Here goes, this is from my very first day on cc. Remember, I started at 235 (weighed at the doctor the week before I started): 2007-01-15 --- 2,144 B-
2007-01-16 --- 1,652 A
2007-01-17 --- 1,420 B-
2007-01-18 --- 1,694 B+
2007-01-19 --- 1,505 B+
2007-01-20 --- 1,801 B-
2007-01-21 --- 1,709 B+
2007-01-22 --- 1,807 B
2007-01-23 --- 1,398 B
2007-01-24 --- 1,453 B
2007-01-25 --- 1,474 B
2007-01-26 --- 1,936 A
2007-01-27 --- 1,687 B+
2007-01-28 --- 1,601 A
2007-01-29 --- 1,923 A-
2007-01-30 --- 1,627 A
2007-01-31 --- 1,879 A-
2007-02-01 --- 1,802 F
2007-02-02 --- 1,670 B+
2007-02-03 --- 1,249 A
2007-02-04 --- 2,011 A
2007-02-05 --- 1,867 A
And by this date, I weighed 225.

Oh geez, there's a lot of controversy over soy milk, too. Soy is a huge industry, just like dairy. Soy producers want to promote their crop just as much as dairy producers want to promote their product.

Soy can cause problems for some people, just like dairy. Personally, it interferes with my thyroid function so I have to stay away from it. It also has estrogen-like properties so people with breast cancer need to stay away from it, too.

The added hormones in dairy, the ones put there to increase growth and milk production, are like throwing fuel on a fire when it comes to cancer and tumors.

I'm thinking milk that comes from cows without the added hormones, is safer and more preferable.

It sounds like you have a hole in your soul that you're trying to fill.

I've felt that hole. Stuffing myself till it hurts somehow helps that hole feel better, for awhile. It makes the hole feel like it's gone away, although of course it hasn't.

One more thing: college takes a LOT of brainpower. Are you eating enough carbs for breakfast to nourish your brain? Brainpower uses calories. So maybe you're really hungry, and trying not to eat, then you get overwhelmingly hungry and you just want to eat everything.

There's probably something about having all the choices that feels good, too. You don't want to pass anything by and feel left out. Just remember that it will be there tomorrow and the next day and the next day. maybe each day let yourself have just *one* of the things you want.

But mostly what I'm hearing is something emotional going on. Try to figure out what's causing that "hole" inside you. Do you miss your old routine? Are you nervous about taking on adult responsibilities? Worried about getting out of college and working forever at something you're not sure you love? What could it be???

(ps. I'm a college student. I always found my first semester at a new school to be tough.)

Studies have shown that calcium from low-fat dairy helps promote weight loss, in ways not found from supplements alone.

Weight Loss How true is this... Cardio in the morning is most effective. Feb 11 2007

I read this great little tidbit earlier today:

"This can be applied to working out as well. For example, someone might read that morning workouts are superior for burning fat. Without debating whether or not this is true, the either/or mentality would say that if you cannot get your workout done in the morning, why even bother.

In reality, working out in the evening is still better than not working out at all - you should train when you can do it consistently, and when you have the most energy. So if you cannot always train in the morning, why not go ahead and try it in the evening? Be flexible and don't get caught in the black and white syndrome."

You also need to get reacquainted with Patience. Here's how I think of it:

Time is going to pass. A year will pass, two years will pass.

I can either lose weight in that time, or I can gain weight in that time.

Either way, the time will pass. I'd rather lose weight. If I give up, I will gain weight. Then a year or two from now, I'll still be moaning about my weight. So if I do my little things each day, thinking about TODAY and not tomorrow, making weight loss techniques just a normal part of being "me" each day, then pretty soon the time will have passed and I will have lost the weight.

Trip-ups along the way don't mean you need to trash your whole life. I heard an example once: you're driving along and you get a flat tire. What do you do?

1) Get out a screwdriver and puncture the other three tires on the car
2) Set fire to the car and walk away
3) Sit next to it on the side of the road and beat yourself up
4) Change the tire and continue on your way.

Duh, the answer is #4. So why don't we treat eating the same way? An obstacle comes up, we get over it and move on.

The other thing I like to think is, you only have to lose 20 lbs ten more times! Just take it one chunk at a time.

I think anxious has a great point. When people come here and "obsess" about anything that may sound like an eating disorder, you'd better believe there will be people posting correction, accurate information, and tools to overcome it. And THAT is what will help people the most.

If people weren't allowed to post their feelings, they'd still feel them, they just wouldn't learn how to correct them. And they'd go and do damage to themselves and then get discouraged.

Posting is good.

The thing about fidgeting is, I think, that you're either a fidgeter or you aren't.

We've all known fidgeters. We want to slap them sometimes. They are ALL skinny.

So if you study skinny fidgeters, then yes, fidgeters burn more calories.

But I think it's really hard for a non-fidgeter to increase their level of fidgeting to the level of a fidgeter. Fidgeters don't have to think about fidgeting ... they have to fight themselves to stop. Non-fidgeters have to drink a lot of coffee in order to get that urge to fidget.

So to just "fidget" for the sake of weight loss, I don't think we could possibly do enough to make a difference.

It is true, though, that moving is better than not moving, so as much as you can remember to move, the better.

Abso-tively! ALWAYS keep those girls supported!
Although now that the damage is done, it's not likely to reverse easily, but I think with toning and exercise it can do a little. Also, make sure that the band is snug around your rib cage. Too loose there and your girls will pull the bra down, undoing the good effects of the bra. You need to start with the support at the ribs.

Oh of course I still keep track of everything I eat! Not doing that is weight-loss suicide, I've learned.

And I've also discovered that the scale fluctuates, so I don't freak out if it says I am 2 lbs heavier today than I was yesterday. I *know* that I'm not eating "extra" food to gain weight, I'm only at maintenance level, so knowing that keeps me from freaking out. It just ain't logical to gain at what I'm eating!

I don't know if this will work. I'll try to keep you updated over time.

What size were you in high school?

In high school I was 5'8", 120 lbs and a size 34D. When I started putting on weight, it went on the bust first. I suspect it will be the last place it comes off as well. And I don't think I'll ever get below a D cup. ANd since I've breastfed, gained weight to a 38H, etc. I think my boobs will always, at best, look like oranges in tube sox.

I suspect I'll need a breast lift/reduction once I've lost my weight.

One more thing I just found:

"You might gain 7 - 10 pounds after a cheat day and even 4 - 7 pounds after a cheat meal. It really depends on your nutrition plan and how drastic the cheat meal is. This rapid gain is not all fat. To gain 10 pounds of fat would require overeating 35,000 calories, a tremendous feat to achieve and one that would be worthy of the record books. Instead, it is more than likely some fat and a lot of water weight."

Oh gosh, I just read an article (someone here posted it, but I can't tell you where it is, sorry) about an overweight woman who was only eating 700 calories a day, yet she couldn't lose weight. Her body was in starvation mode.

The author told her that the solution would freak her out. She would have to GAIN weight before she could lose it. THe doc said that in the first three weeks of eating normally, she would gain about 20 lbs. Then, she would start to lose again.

It all had to do with how her metabolism had slowed down so much, that her body was going to store all excess food at first. Once her body got out of that mode, her metabolism would speed up to normal and she'd lose again.

I will try to find that article and post it here, OK? I think you should not freak out. you will not continue to balloon. Your body will stop gaining, and pretty soon. Just relax and realize that you're trying to undo something bad, and it will take a bit of time.

According to my food log, I've earned an 'A' average for the whole five weeks I've been here. I know enough to not eat junk every day; I've been there done that and it feels awful anymore.

Plus I want to learn how to eat "normal" without gaining weight. I'm pretty sure that if I "dieted" for a whole year, at the end of the year I'd pig out on all the stuff I passed up along the way. This way, I think knowing that I don't have to be so strict ALL THE TIME, it makes it easier to live with the plan.

The days I do "maintenance" feel almost like a luxury. I don't even feel the need to eat more, or junk. I just want to go up to 2100 cals instead of keeping between 1400-1600 all the time.

Did you know that (according to Newton, at least), you are a tiny bit shorter at night than you are in the morning?

It has to do with gravity. Each time you take a step, you pound your bones just a little bit closer together. Think of what happens when you fill a measuring cup with flour and then tap it on the countertop. The flour compacts. Same thing happens to your body from walking.

Then I guess at night your body expands again, or something. I dunno. I didn't do so well in Physics.

I think strength training is more important for you at this stage than cardio. Strength training (weight lifting) will firm you up and make you look less flabby.

So on strength training days, only warm up with cardio for about five minutes, and don't push too hard. The goal is to just warm up your muscles. Then, work on the weight circuit, and you might prefer to use fewer reps of heavier weights, which will build muscle faster.

Make sure the weights are heavy enough that you can get through at least one rep, but by the end of the second round you are pushing your muscles to fatigue, meaning it's extremely difficult to get that last one in. THAT is what will build your muscles and make you look leaner. Not cardio.
