You know how everyone has one of those weird dishes from thier childhood, that they continue to love as an adult? Here's mine, lol.

Red Stew 6 servings

1 lb. ground beef, browned, seasoned w/ salt&pepper
1 large head cabbage, cut into 6 or 8 wedges
1 can pork & beans
1/2 large can of tomato juice
1 t. thyme
all the odds and ends of leftover vegetables in the fridge, or you can just use 1/2 bag of frozen mixed veggies

Cook at least 3 hours in your crockpot, but the longer, the better. I know, its weird, but I've loved it ever since I was a kid. It was how my mother used to use up all the veggie leftovers. Its also a cheap meal for a family with 4 kids.

One thing I like to do is make foil packets if I'm already using the oven, or those microwave steamer bags. For an Italian flavor, a little garlic, a drizzle of olive oil and pinch of basil, if I want to really jazz it up, I'll add just a few drops of balsamic vinegar. For an Asian flavor, I use a few drops of toasted sesame oil, a shake or two of soy sauce, garlic and ginger. Go French; drizzle of olive oil, pinch sea salt and herbs de provance. Go eastern Europe; drizzle of grapeseed oil, a couple hefty shakes of paprika and pinch of thyme or sage.

What veggies? Whatever you have on hand, or whatever is on sale that week, is how I do it. When you close up the veggies to make them steam, you don't need very much liquid at all, and the flavor gets all through. So you can flavor a good 3 or 4 cups of veggies with very little olive oil, like a teaspoon.

I'll try :) Do you have a crockpot? I use mine often. You can assemble meals in it before bed and stick the whole pot on the bottom shelf of your fridge, then take it out and plug it in before you leave in the morning. Things I make in it: chili, veggie chili, soups and stews, roasts (chicken, beef and turkey) Example: today, I roasted 1/2 a turkey breast in it with about 1 cup of vegatable broth (don't forget to add your favorite spices and herbs!). At dinnertime I microwaved baked potatoes and steamed asparagus in one of those new steamer microwave bags. (They rock!) The veggie broth with the juices from the turkey made awesome gravy, and because veggie broth only has about 20 cals per cup, its not real fattening. Altogether took mabout 10 mins. to put dinner on the table. Chili, soup and stew is even faster and easier. Skin on poultry doesn't brown much, but you don't eat the skin anyways, right? Hope this helped.
Weight Loss How do I find "filling" low calorie foods? Jan 16 2008

I think its the kind of food you're eating. I would say to eat more fiber and protein. Someone mentioned egg whites, thats a good one. So are turkey, chicken and fish. Also lots of raw veggies. Start looking through the vegetable category and you will be surprised how much you can eat.

Honestly, I don't consider things like cheerios to be real food because they contain nothing but refined carbohydrates. For cereal, I cook whole grains - that will fill you up.

Here's an example: Yesterday my calorie intake was 1,258. I ate:
Breakfast
1 c. whole milk
1 banana
1.5 cups cooked oat bran cereal
coffee

Lunch
11.5 oz. can V8 juice
18 All Bran crackers
piece of string cheese

Dinner
3 oz. cooked chicken breast stir fried with frozen asian veggies in a little sesame oil, ginger & garlic. (Includes the sauce in the frozen veggies)
.75 c. white rice (I'm out of brown, need to go shopping)
1 serving (6 pieces) Whole foods mini dim sum (frozen)
about a tablespoon Mae Ploy sauce for dipping

Snacks
1 banana
10 m&m's

Don't deny yourself sugar entirely, craving can drive you nuts and lead to falling off the wagon. I chose m&m's because if you only eat 10, its only 34 calories, and it satisfies the sweet tooth. Also don't let yourself go hungry for long periods of time or the temptation to overeat gets overwhelming. Just remember to stick with raw fruits and veggies and lean protein. After awhile, your tastes will change, and you will love real food, but you have to give your tastebuds and your body a chance to adjust. Good luck.
Foods When Pasta is your main dish, do you have sides? Jan 08 2008

I always have salad with mine. *shrugs* But if you want a cooked veggie on the side, why not? There's a product out now called Steamfresh, which is individual servings of veggies that you just pop in the microwave. You could always do one of those for yourself and let everyone else bloat out on an all pasta meal. They're really quite good.

Most definitely, squash. My favorite is butternut, just cut it in half, remove the seeds, and roast it in the oven for about an hour. Then mash it with a little bit of thyme, sage, and onion powder. (a tiny bit of butter if your eating plan allows) Its delish, and you will never miss mashed potaoes again.

I don't know if you'll gain fat, but you are bound to screw up your metabolism by going 14 hours without eating every day. You really should take some calories from dinner and have a lunch. Do you get lightheaded or feel bad in the afternoon? If you don't yet, you likely will start to at some point. Don't make yourself hypoglycemic, its not fun.

The traditional Asian breakfast is soup. Maybe try a nice hot bowl of miso soup in the morning. It can be quite filling and lo-cal.

That happens to me also. A few minutes into my cardio I sometimes feel like I'm going to poop out completely, but if you push through it it goes away. Weird, huh? I don't know why it happens.

I like the ellipticals at the gym much better than the treadmill. They're alot easier on my knees, and I burn more calories faster.
Weight Loss Can you lose weight if you stay in your daily calorie range and still eat anything? Jan 31 2007

Juliettajasper,

Here is the easiest way to figure it out.
1. Get out a calculator.
2. Punch in the weight you want to be. (Your goal weight)
3. Multiply that number by 12.
4. Thats how many calories you eat every day for the rest of your life.

Any excercise you do each day will make you lose weight a little bit faster. Once you reach your goal weight, any excercise you do each day is a few extra calories you can eat without putting on weight.

Example: My goal weight at this time is 175.
                175 x 12 = 2100.
I actually eat about 1800 to 1900 cals per day, so I will lose weight a little bit faster. I also work out 3 times per week, that will help too. Don't go too low on your calories, or your metabolism will slow down and make it harder to lose weight.

My complete goal is to weigh 175 and bench-press 175. I'm hoping to be there by the end of summer. Good luck with your goals whatever they are!

Sure is. It sits on the tile floor in my bathroom, and its a relatively new digital. I've never had any problems with it before.
