just finished reading thru this entire thread - interesting comments to say the least. I believe if monogamy and commitment work for you, that's just awesome! If not, be safe! I personally was in 3 failed relationships and after the last one decided no more of that 4-letter "L" word and the commitment (monogamy) and the heartbreak and the games! I also raised 2 children (from different relationships) and they have turned out to be respectable, hard-working adults. I've been dating a lot of different men over the past 2 years and have had true peace and contentment in probably the first time in my entire life. BUT one of the men I met almost a year ago - well, I've found myself beginning to have a VERY strong attraction to and have many times had to 'bite my tongue' in order to keep from muttering that "4 letter word" - just because I am so afraid by saying it outloud I will ruin the fantastic friendship and intimacy we have built together. I truly enjoy the times we spend together - he has four teenage boys and he has them two evenings a week and every-other weekend - and he has ME the other evenings and every-other weekend. We both were dating others simultaneously and I never was jealous of that (and he says he wasn't jealous either) because we don't claim to 'own' the other - but as time has gone on, we've both stopped seeing the others and that's what is starting to scare me! Oh well. I'll just enjoy him until I slip up and tell him I love him! Then it will probably all come crashing to an end. Sorry to be rambling here. But it's just my 2¢ worth on this topic of monogamy. Oh, by the way, he once commented to me "you know we'll never be married" when I confessed I love chicken gizzards and liver! LOL. |

holy cow! rent in NY is expensive! I'm pretty sure you've made up your mind by now but if it was me, I'd take the studio. one way to save a bit on $$ is to look into Angel Food Ministries. it's a nonprofit and you can get enough food "to last a family of four for a week" for just $30. if it's just you, that will stretch a very long way! I am single and get this each month. move to Kansas! I'm in a one-bedroom for only $470 a month! LOL. There are lots of ways to scrimp and pare down your budget to make your apartment a little more affordable! Good luck and keep us posted! |

I just recently stumbled on a series by Janet Evanovich - novels about a female bounty hunter named Stephanie Plum - be sure to start with the first book, though - I'm up to #10 so far - I almost can't put them down - very entertaining and I find myself laughing hysterically - |

thanks, all, for the comments! Rosl, I didn't feel you were judgemental - my son called me on a Thursday with the news and it was like a bomb had dropped - that weekend I was a total "mess" - and the guy I'm seeing was there for me - my son lives in California - I live in Kansas - he moved there just days after graduating from high school - and I think I am handling the empty nest syndrome quite fine, enjoying my "freedom" - probably as much as my son is enjoying his! A single parent, my son and I never had any issues - none! He was almost "abnormal" for a teenager! In fact, before he moved away, I told him we should have some fights so I wouldn't miss him so much - but we just never did! In fact, he didnt' want to tell me about his tumor at first but the nurse at the hospital made him call me! And I trust the neurosurgeon knows what he is doing - but I can see where it seems like I'm acting like a teenager about this man, though! LOL. It helps to have the perspective of others, sometimes - I guess it's like the proverbial "can't see the forest because of the trees" thing! LOL. I was a full-time mom for 28 years. Watergirl, I am so sad about your son. I just can't imagine losing a child - that's the part that has been hard to deal with - but I haven't lost him yet. and yes, I am enjoying my guy every day and am thankful to have him in my life even though I am very cautious about using that "L"word! ha ha ha - now it seems like I've been kinda silly about the whole thing, huh? You are definitely right about today is the certainty and tomorrow is only a hope - thanks again for all the comments! |

UPDATE: The only thing I'm doing differently since I started Slim In 6 is NOT going to the gym and using the ellipitical for 45 minutes 5 days a week. I'm eating the same nutritious foods that I have been for months. I've been awfully faithful with SI6 but maybe I'm not "pushing" hard enough or something because the 8 pounds that I had lost before IS BACK. And I actually feel more jiggly than before. Ugh! I'm gonna put SI6 on the back burner for now and get back to the gym. I've been with SI6 for only 2 weeks and I am pretty disappointed - I wasn't expecting to get toned or see much weight loss after just 2 weeks but I didn't expect to GAIN back the 8 pounds I had lost GRRRRR. My game plan now is to lose that 8 pounds AGAIN and lose another 12 and THEN I will hit SI6 to see about toning up. |

PS I'd rather be bulky than flabby! |

Started Ramp It Up! on Friday, took Sunday off. I like this one! I'm sore, but it's a GOOD sore! Gonna continue RIU and then go to Burn it Up. I am so awkward, though, but hoping this will improve my balance somewhat! Glad to be doing this in the privacy of my own home. I do miss using the eliptical during the day but I'll get back to that mid-July. How is everyone else doing so far? Maria - I'd be more than happy to email you the diet plan but you need to let me know what part you mean as I wll be scanning it and will have to email it to you. |

thanks for the tip about pullng my stomach muscles in more! I take tips to heart! I hired a personal trainer a few months ago when I was starting to workout at the local community center, and one tip she gave me when doing the stationary bike or the eliptical was to push wtih my heels instead of my toes, and to squeeze my butt cheeks (not her words, mine!) and pull in my abs at the same time. Congrats on deciding to start up 2nd time! Keep us posted on your journey. Okay. Now I gotta get back to work! |

cas049 you might check on ebay or craigslist or maybe someone here will respond. I was a bit surprised to find shipping and handling charges because they never mentioned that to me, either on the phone when I placed my order or on the infomercial. The 'free' upgrade on shipping was to get the order sooner and I misunderstood and thought that meant free shipping. I wonder if this is available at public libraries? I just did day #2 of Start it up. My back is still a bit sore because of the crunches but I know it is only temporary as long as I keep using those muscles. I think I will do Start it Up the rest of this week, and then do Ramp it Up starting next week. AnnHelen - were you able to get started? Even if you are delayed getting started because of your painting, just remember Start it Up is only 25 minutes! Well, I need to get to work now! Keep me posted! |

Hi AnnHelen! yes, I started today with Start it Up. It is only 25 minutes and even though I worked up a sweat, it wasn't that bad. I fell off a bike at the end of April (lol and they say you never forget how to ride them - HA) I sprained my wrist and so doing the push-ups was a bit painful. My back is a bit achy from doing the crunches, but since I had been working on the elliptical at the gym for about a month, for 45 minutes 5 days a week, my legs are okay. I am not following her diet plan since I discovered www.dietitian.com and have devised my own Meal Plan. Since starting on my own meal plan a week after I sprained my wrist and started using the elliptical, I have lost 8 pounds already but I, too, have the jiggly stuff I'd like to get rid of and this tummy bulge, which I'm sure is that other 20 pounds I want to lose! I think I'll do the Start it Up tomorrow and then see how the Ramp it Up goes from there. I am exchanging my time at the gym every day so I can give Si6 my best effort! Otherwise I don't know when I'd do it Since i start work between 4 and 4;30 in the morning and work until suppertime, i don't do much of anything after supper other than I do need to walk to Dollar General this evening. My motivation is just wanting to tone up my body for my 'boyfriend' ... :o). Catch ya later! |

well, It's Monday June 8. I got my SI6 last week and decided today was going to be my first day. I work lots of hours and usually go to the gym on my "lunch" hour and was wondering when on earth would I find time to squeeze in another hour?! I decided over the weekend to give this a whirl and so I will forgo the gym for the next six weeks in order to give this my best shot. So, I'll report back tomorrow and let you all know how it goes! It's 6 a.m. right now and I'm in between jobs and I plan to do this at 10 this morning. My BF and I had some friends over last nite - she is a slim little thing - gosh, I wish I could look like her again and I know this is unrealistic - I'm 50 and have had 2 kids and she is 28 and kidless - but still I can dream, right?! LOL. |

hi annhelen! Yes, I'd like a buddy! I am a work-a-holic so time for me is tight! I work at home but start at 4 in the morning. I try to leave here at 10 a.m. to go to the gym (less crowded then) and hit the elipital for 45 minutes then back to work until suppertime ... not sure WHEN i'm gonna find an additional hour for 5 out of 6 days, but I'm determined to tone my body up! My BF (for lack of a better term to call him!) "prefers" "thin" gals but he keeps coming around (since November) so I figure he doesn't mind me just the way I am, but still, for ME, I want to get back to where I was! My problem areas are the same as yours. Sadly, I think my boobs have been the first to "suffer" from the 10 pounds I have already lost!!! I'll let you know when my DVDs get here |

I just saw the infomercial on TV. I quit smoking 4 yrs ago, was also going thru a difficult time and was on antidepressants, ate everything in site and went from 130 to 160 in no time flat. Once I realized what was happening, I dropped the antidepressants and started cutting back on calories, to about 1200 a day. I chose more healthy foods, cut out fats and sweets as much as possible, but never could lose any weight. Did that for about 18 months or so - a guy I started dating suggested I join the local community center (literally 5 mins away on foot from me and I have no car) so now I have been doing the ellipitcal machine about 45 minutes a day since March, Plus I discovered 1200 calories was not enough and put my body into starvation mode - have read Jillian Michael's Master your metabolism and after vamping up my calories to now about 1400 a day and also added FATS, I almost over night lost 10 pounds! Then I saw the infomercial today and decided to give this a whirl - hoping to do this IN ADDITION to 45 minutes of ellipitals 5 days a week - goal is to get back to 130 or less. I'm 50 yrs old, 5' 5". I am pretty excited about having lost 10 pounds now and look forward to toning my body, especially my belly and thighs! I know I won't get any of the DVDs for at least a week ... but plan to check in here often and see how everyone else is doing. don't mind having a buddy - my email is rharlow2 "at" gmail "dot" com. |

wow. Never knew there could be so much controversy. Again, I just started moving in February. The most "moving" I did before that was sex. LOL. So the machines, for me, feel good and I don't do so much that I hurt. Trainer said to push until I felt fatigued. On Friday, my BF brought over a 10-speed he got me and I fell off the darn thing - TWICE - so needless to say I am quite uncoordinated!!!! That's why using the free weights freaks me out - I'm afraid I'm gonna drop them and even 8 pounds on a toe will hurt!! So the machines offer a comfort level for me and I know better than to push myself so far I hurt. I can't afford any injuries (when I fell off the bike I landed hard on my right wrist so now I'm doing everything slower!!) I would like to be able to use the machines to help me strengthen my muscles - my back, shoulders, arms, legs, etc. Once I feel "stronger" then I would like to start with the free weights, and then, once I feel comfortable there, maybe I'll try that bike again!!!! LOL.

that trainer is no longer available. There are others ... and yes $38 an hour thru the community center. I am so new to all of this ... my BF challenged me to joint the gym and start working out and that was the incentive I needed! I love going to the gym and have my "favorite" machines but it's all so loosey-goosey and I will do much better having a routine to follow. Thank you! |

thanks for the encouragement clharr ... I, too last took any kind of organized class 19 years ago when I was pregnant with my 2nd child, and have a very sedentary job, sitting at my desk (at home) from 4:30 a.m. to at least 6:00 p.m.! I know I can't do a lot of the moves (pushups, situps, etc. etc.!! even balancing that darn ball this morning was funny - I was the only one who kept rolling off the thing!) and I do know to take my time, at my pace, and "push" myself firmly but gently! the ginger water is just about 2 teaspoons of freshy ground ginger and gives the water a refreshing "zing". I had a cold a couple of months ago and ginger tea was suggested and I liked it so I just keep drinking it - but today just ginger with hot water - no tea and I like it just fine.

It's loose green tea and I just put one scoop (maybe 1 tablespoon) in my coffee filter. I use that same tea all day long. Today I skipped the tea, though, and just put about a teaspoon of freshly ground ginger in the coffee filter and have been drinking hot ginger water all afternoon. |

During the day, I drink the equivalent of 3 coffee pots worth of japanese green tea (Gen Mai Cha) - it's winter and I like the hot drink, so I run water thru my coffee pot and store it in a thermos. I generally have 3 potsfull - I just measured so that's 96 ounces. The green tea I drink has less caffiene than normal green tea as it also has puffed brown rice in it. Am I drinking too much caffeine perhaps and this is dehydrating me? I know it's much less caffiene than coffee or black tea ... and I know I get up and pee frequently during the day!!! I can stop drinking the tea and just drink hot water instead. Once the warm weather settles in , I will resume drinking cold roasted barley tea (no caffiene) ...

I could try but ugh! It goes against my very grain to eat that much! I still should pay attention to carbs, protein, fat, etc., right? Just eat more of everything? Or can I eat ice cream and cookies? LOL. This reminds me of when I used to smoke - I could go all day on coffee alone until 2 in the afternoon. I only drink 2 cups of coffee now, and water and japanese green tea the rest of the day. The last 2 weeks, I just haven't felt hungry. I also am down to 158 this morning - I'm sure that's just a fluke although that looks good on the scale for a change!!! |

I'm a morning person so 5:45 is not early for me! Day 1 was an assessment to see where we are. I will find out tomorrow. I was able to do 6.5 laps in 12 minutes, only 2 pushups in 1 minute (LOL), 15 sit ups in 1 minute and 30 squats in 1 minute. I was fine yesterday but was sore overnight and am tender today! Instructor won't "allow" modified pushups and for the life of me, I CANNOT push my 160 pounds back up off the floor! And after completing 2 pushups in 1 minute, my shoulder joints are sore!! ha ha ha - What can I do at home to help "strengthen" my arms??!!!! My tummy is sore from the measly 15 situps, too! But it's all a "good" sore - I even have trouble with pushups with my knees on the ground, modfied style. Am I doing something wrong? Surely I should be able to push myself up off the floor!!!! Advice on doing pushups would be most welcome!!!! |

I can eat a banana - that's a good idea. I think it is lack of potassium that can cause muscle cramps ... I have one here I will eat in the morning. I'm not going to this class to impress anyone there - but it is nice I have someone to prod me along the way! The guy I'm dating has told me he "prefers" thinner gals - but he likes me anyway!! My goal is to become a thin gal - at least back to where I used to be before I quit smoking 4 yrs ago! I saved my absolute favorite pair of jeans - a size 8 - it will be awesome when I can fit back into them! I know I'm gonna be sore but I'm gonna stick with it. I thnk the past year I have "settled" for the weight and flab that I am now - and now I want to change that! I might buy some epsom salts to soak in tomorrow nite in a hot tub of water ... m BF and I are gonna visit some friends tonite to watch the game so I'll have him swing by a store so I can get some ...
thanks for the encouragment. I can DO THIS! |

I think you are making this more difficult than it has to be! 1/2 cup quick oats, and 1 cup water, mix in a bowl and zap on Hi in the Microwave for 1.5 minutes. DONE. Oh. I bought a 1/2 cup metal measuring cup at a garage sale and just keep that in my oats!! I add a dash of salt, too (the 1/2 the sodium stuff). There's 150 calories. Add in Splenda = 0 calories. Now add in whatever you are gonna add in - and just note how much and how many calories. Personally, I shake in some cinnamon in mine (0 calories), and then about a tablespoon of shredded coconut (40 calories) and then I thin it out (and cool it down) by mixing in a bit more cold tap water. Total 190 calories. Sometimes I toss in a few drops of "butter flavor" and that's 0 calories too. Hope this helps! |

There is also Earl Grey Green tea which is really good. During the day, I drink a Japanese Green Tea called Gen Mai Cha - it has puffed brown rice in with the green tea ... in the evening, I will have that with the Earl Grey Green with sweetner in it for a change. I get migraines when I use the "blue" stuff (aspartame or Equal) but when I use Sweet N Low it doesn't bother me one bit. |

I make my own homemade yogurt, so it is plain in flavor, but my favorite is to add a few drops of (artificial) coconut extract, some sweet n low and some shredded coconut. It's so yummy! Next favorite flavor is grape! I buy sugar-free grape koolaid (walmart brand) and add about 1/4 teaspoon into 8 ounces of plain yogurt. I've never seen GRAPE flavored yogurt at a store before! It's awesome! |
