Weight Loss Combining different elements... Apr 01 2007

Sounds like just another wacky theory to me.

Vegetables are carbs :) Also I would assume eating protein with fast burning carbs is actually as useful more than as eating them with other carbs. Skinless potatoes are quite high GI... Eating them with chicken, etc, would presumably make the blood sugar spike less.

Feel free to correct me, anyone, but I really can't see much benefit to separating the two. Balance is much more effective at giving your body what it needs and making you feel full than just having one 'type' of food as well.

If she does this often, next time she says something like that, look her in the eye and say 'Do you mind?' ... She won't know how to reply and hopefully she will get the hint.

Wow. And I thought my BF was skinny. :o!

You should work out how much he needs to maintain, then go over that by about 400 calories a day in order for him to gain muscle. He should also do weights at least 3 times a week. You can't lose weight and gain muscle at the same time as a general rule, so he should cut down on the running (do very little, if at all) and focus on weightlifting. Some people just have crazy metabolisms, so the 400 over might not be enough... Keep adding until you find something that works.

Forget the junk, like amadeus said there's plenty of high calorie healthy food that he can eat. Eat proper meals with lots of protein, often, throughout the day . If you can find a decent protein shake that would be good, as he'll probably need at least one a day! With milk I personally think they taste nice.

Most importantly though, he needs to want it. Gaining weight can be as difficult as losing it! :)
Maintaining Spreading meals out. Mar 30 2007

Jess, it may not have 'not worked'... You should look at it from another way.

You're pretty tall. I require 1600 to maintain WITHOUT exercise and 1800 with light exercise and I'm only 5'3"..

You say you are fairly active, perhaps 2000 is a good number for you! What do the tools say you need to maintain?

I know it sucks gaining in a short space, but trust me, your metabolism will get back to normal, then you will be able to eat 2000 on a regular basis without gaining. You will feel a lot better and stronger than only eating 900 and your metabolism will be fast so you can lose weight the healthy way. It's not likely those 5 pounds were pure fat either!

It will probably stop or help you to binge less as well, which is a results of you eating too little on a regular basis. Like hybrids said, if you can only eat 900, then you DO have control to eat 1200, then 1300, 1400... It's just a roadblock.

Also, like he said, I'm always free to listen. :)

firefox > everything.

... but i literally just move my mouse, click, type and press enter and it's instant. with the CC one i have to press recipes -> unit converter... etc. thx for pointing it out though.

even then it's only for kitchen weights. i live in england so i find it useful to have things like KM/H and KG and M on hand for this lame metric system that nobody else uses. xD

teh google one just has waaay more options, no offence to CC ?

Uhh... no?

Firstly, i wasn't the one who deleted it. Secondly, why would i bring that up again? it was deleted by a mod for a reason. Anyone can look at my or luna's post and see what yours was generally about anyway.

edit - look, the wrong or not wrong thing is the oldest debate in the book. quite literally. i'm not going to bother... and no, it's not because i don't know i'm right ;) it's because it's futile. you obviously already have your little mind set on some bizarre set of circumstances were vegetarianism and homosexuality are related AT ALL (seriously, wtf?)

so nothing i say will change that. i'll just sit here and feel sorry for you.

This naive schtick isn't fooling anyone.

You know exactly which part of your post (though there was probably more than one)  'crossed the line' from devil's advocate or disagreement into overtly offensive.

There was no way you could have said what you said and not offended SOMEBODY and that's why you were called on it.

That was completely, COMPLETELY unnecessary.

I'm not going to continue a discussion about meat-eating with an ignorant homophobe. This is my 'polite' reply, so take it or leave it.

P.S. Your orginal point is still invalid.

Humans don't raise about 99.9% of the species on this planet, they all live quite happily without us. We're the ones who inflict the most long-lasting damage on the habitats and numbers of animals. Anyone who can't see that, vegetarian or not, is walking around with blinders on as far as i'm concerned.

That's all a waist:hip ratio is, though. It's just waist measurement divided by hip measurement. Therefore the less difference you have between the two (a boyish figure, i guess) the higher the number will be approaching 1, and vice versa.
Weight Loss sodium and water? Mar 29 2007
08:42 (UTC)
Like others have already said, you don't want to flush sodium out of your body as it's vital for certain body processes.

You're right about the water weight thing though. The more hydrated you are, the less water your cells retain and therefore the less 'water weight' you have.

I think you should rest for a while, keeping your foot iced and slightly elevated. Yeah, it sucks, but like nina said turning that little niggle into something that happens all the time is not worth it. Pretty much any cardio you do will be putting pressure and downward blood flow to your ankle.

I used to have weak ankles that I made worse by walking on them after injury... Physio is the most painful thing EVER.
Fitness lost weight and gained inches?? Mar 29 2007

are you actually measuring with a tape or just judging by how tight your pants are?

and is that 1200 before or after exercise?

there are two things i can think of:
1. gaining muscle mass often makes your pants feel tighter, use the measuring tape and record it every once in a while rather than judging by that alone. my jeans get tighter in the quads and butt when i do regular weight-training, for example.

2. worse case scenario, you're not eating enough for the amount of exercise you're doing... your body decides to burn muscle for fuel, leaving you with a lower % of lean weight and therefore a higher % of body fat. this is unlikely though unless you've been doing this a while, and shouldn't make much of a difference in pant size, afaik.

The tools say you burn 1700 sedentary so if you eat no less than 1200, but around 1350-1400 you could lose your weight by november doing no exercise (not the best idea).. Add back in your exercise calories for ease. I use a tool like : http://www.blaha.net/Main%20Exercise%20Calori e%20Calculator.htm
to work out how much i'm burning at my current weight, rather than use the average.

As for exercise, I find full body weights on Monday, Wednesday and Friday works best, with cardio after the weights. If you are free every day and have the willpower, you could do cardio 5 days a week (as in, no weights on tuesday and thursday and just running for example)... If you feel like you would burn out doing that, I'm pretty sure 3 days a week of hard work is fine and good. :) The college gym will be your saviour. If you have one I highly suggest you sign up!

If you are one of those people who can't eat sweets in moderation, you might be better just cutting them out all together. You may even lose your sweet tooth!

I found going cold turkey on chocolate for the significant portion allowed me to introduce them slowly and in moderation, so now I have a bit most days and I feel fine. But it's preference, really. Do what you will be able to stick with! :)

Hope that helped. Good luck.

Weight Loss My plan for weightloss... any suggestions? Mar 29 2007

Unless you are eating a LOT of cereal I can't see how that would add up to even 800 calories. With the amount of exercise you are doing you need to be eating a lot more than that as well.

Use the tools at the top of the page to work out how many calories you burn in a day, and see how much you need to be eating.

Aside from being too few calories, there is also a significant lack of good nutrition: Not enough vegetables, fruits, whole-grains and basically NO protein.

The most effective way to lose weight is to do it healthily ;) it will be much easier and better for you once you reach your goal.

~edit~

At your current height and weight you could eat around 1400 and lose a pound a week (without exercise.) ... add your exercise back in and you should be fine.

Yep. ^^

I'm a little confused by your question, tbh. As soon as food enters your mouth it is being digested. Then it continues to be digested as it passes through your body.

Fitness Muscle burns fat, right? Mar 28 2007
20:03 (UTC)

muscle burns calories even when you are not 'using' them. fat just sits there vegetating.

the more muscle you have, the higher your BMR (that's partly why men have higher caloric needs).

fat will be burned from anywhere by your body... that's something we have no control over, since it's due to things like genetics and body type. usually the first place to gain will be the last place to lose. it doesn't matter which muscles you work, since there is no spot reduction, so i suggest working them all. :)
Weight Loss my calorie deficit is pretty small... Mar 27 2007
23:30 (UTC)
hah really? i did not know that.

anyway, just wanted to add that you should focus on toning now while you are trying to lose fat. doing weights will really help you out! also, you might not need the maximum deficit. if you have a smaller deficit, the more likely it will be any weight loss will come from burning fat rather than burning muscle. i am currently eating 15/600 (2/300 deficit) when i work out to lower my bodyfat % for the summer [onwards], as a reference :)

what time do you finish school? if you finish at 3ish you could just eat then. just a little bit more planning is needed, bring a luna bar or fruit or other snack that you can carry with you and eat. :)

when i was in high school we had a break at 11.20 and lunch at 1 so it wasn't that much of a problem.

I agree that you should eat dinner. Maybe something low cal and slow burning.. protein + veg... you can get a decent meal for around 200-300 cals.

perhaps you should try and eat a healthy snack between lunch and dinner rather than saving your cals for dinner. if your blood sugar is stable you might feel less inclined to go for the high cal junk.

either way, write off your mistake as just that, and hop back on the wagon again tomorrow. :)

edit - the similarity in food suggestion ^^ was a weird coincidence, heh.

yes, you're only 5'3" and you're in the healthy range already... a pound every 8 or 9 days is fine.

i don't mean that in an insulting way, either, i am 5'3" too, heh.

we just can't have a big deficit... we don't need one because of our size. the science works out in the end. :)

hehe. there are quite a few college groups that i, uh, can't be bothered to look for at the moment. anyway...

i tried the whole 'motivating room mates' thing by offering to go with them to the gym and trying to explain proper weight loss to one of them (who doesn't understand why 'not eating' doesn't work) but... in the end, when that wasn't working, i just... kicked my own ass into gear, basically.

now i actually enjoy going to the gym by myself without distractions, which i never would've expected!

sorry for my life story, haha. good luck to you and good on you for starting early! :)

tips? eat. yes, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks!

you don't eat breakfast, and then you eat starburst or chips for lunch? i don't believe you don't know that is not 'eating good all day'

you can't control it, as others have mentioned, because your body is fed up of (literally) starving all day and goes on autopilot in order to get some calories in.

I suggest you work it out using sedentary, then add the 30 mins of exercise using the activity log. It might even come out similar but I think it's more accurate that way.
