Fitness New to exercising so not sure if I am doing it right Feb 19 2008

definitely sounds like you're getting in quite a bit of exercise, so kudos to you!

i also use the firm workout dvds, and they definitely make you work :)

i only have a couple of suggestions-just tips i've picked up from the site over the last year, reading articles, and some workout sessions with a trainer.

you might want to vary what KIND of cardio you do--try aerobics, step, the bike, stairs, dance, whatever, but your body adapts really well to monotonous forms of cardio, so it becomes really efficient--meaning it uses fewer calories and requires less exertion for the same amount of work.  by changing what you do, you use different muscles in different ways to keep your body from adapting and lowering your calorie burn.  also, the firm isn't a routine you should do every day. it involves a fair amount of weights and strength training, and those you want to do just every other day to allow for muscle repair.  the firm does a pretty good job of hitting all the major muscle groups in upper and lower body, but again, change is good.  you might want to look into different exercises that work the same muscle groups so you use and strengthen them in different ways. this site has lots of exercises, and i also really like shape.com.

hope this helps!

hey guys! they keep me so busy at my internship that i don't have time to check out all the posts during the day, and once i get home, i'm hardly on the computer! so i think my posts will probably whittle down to one a day or so. i'm goign to try to keep up with my journal, but so far am not doing so stellar with that :)

stacey--glad to see the numbers are dropping back down. i was worried too because my weight was up at 140 the past two days (a number i haven't seen for quite a while) but then i dropped to 137 this AM. *sigh of relief* also--you could try chewing gum. just having something in my mouth makes me forget the fact taht i could be eating.

randy--yay for you! 10 minutes is a great start, and if you can do it every day, that's awesome. i love your $$/time question :) i would do a cardio workout every morning (or maybe 5-6 mornings--heehee) either a run at home, some turbo jam, or reading my magazines on the elliptical at the gym. in the pm, i'd do the classes at the gym--yoga a couple times a week, strength training a couple times a week, maybe some pilates or another fun cardio class to mix it up. workout with a trainer once or twice a week (instead of a class). maybe yoga twice a week, strength class twice a week, and trainer once a week. plus i'd buy LOTS of cute gym clothes, new shoes, some nicer headphones....oh the list goes on and on :) i like working out a lot because it gives me leeway with food :)

joan--congrats on the new low! that's so exciting--i'm really hoping i start dropping back down--i really just need to crack down on my food. i stopped losing when i stopped being as disciplined. i'm wearing a dress on saturday too! (wedding)

brigitte--hope you get all that stuff done today! that's so awesome that you're down there  (your weight i mean) consistently!

tami--awesome run! i think the most i've done is 3.5 miles so far--but i'm pretty satisfied with that, actually :) have fun spinning!

brianne--i hope you're able to pull somethign awesome out of having a bigger workload! maybe something great will fall on your plate. i have a problem with eating drunk too :(

soraya--that's great that you're noticing changes! sometimes it's really hard to notice the small things when the #'s don't change. do you measure yourself? that can be a really great confidence booster too.

as for me, i did my yogafit class again last night (plus a great run in the AM--beautiful weather)! it's definitely going to make me more flexible, strengthen my shoulders (from all the lowering from plank into upward dog), and my legs. not a major core workout, but some. tonight i'm trying body blast--a full body strength training class. i'm pretty sure it's going to kick my butt--but i'm going to make it a regular thing. i'm totally loving classes :) the time goes by so fast! tomorrow is AM cardio at the gym so i can read my new Shape magazine! plus it's my first day on the floor at Ann Taylor so i'm nervous but really excited :) i just gotta learn where all the clothes are!

hello all! sorry i missed the past couple of days!

brianneo--i'm with you on the alcohol. i've finally decided that i'm goign to stop drinking a martini or beer when i go to restaurants or just casually at dinner.  but every once in a while i get together with some friends from college and it's a pretty heavy drinking night. i'm not going to give those up, but since we only get together once every 1-2 months, i'm going to let myself indulge. other than that i'm trying to stick to water, limited amounts of pop, and iced tea or lemonade. good luck getting back down!

brigitte--one of my favorite memories of a game is we did a relay race where we had to dress up in my parents' clothes and pass the outfit down the line. good luck on the new low! i'm jealous, but i also know i haven't really been keeping deficits so i'm not surprised i'm not losing :)

tina--that's so great you want to have kids soon! good luck though--it sounds like it might be a rough road.

tami--i'm sorry i can't really relate to the kids going to school thing (i dont' have any kids yet). i could understand that being hard, though--hopefully things start to pick up and you're able to get in some more you-time. just out of curiosity, what kind of instructor are you? any particular classes?

randy--first of all, hello! i'm morgan, 23 y/o, 5'4.5", 137-139 lbs (have lost about 30 in the last year). sorry to keep saying it, but you do have to exercise! i wasn't much of an exerciser to start with, but now i really love it. it is hard to get yoruself to do it some days, but someone else said it already--you always feel great afterwards. plus if you look at exercise as somethign just for you, it can be a nice break from all the other responsibilities. we all have to take breaks--it re-energizes us to do all the other stuff. you're right around my height and weight (although i'm probably a few years younger). i don't think we need to get down to 118 :) i'll be pretty happy at 130 :) i'd even be happy at this exact weight if i can get my body fat percentage down!

soraya--sounds like good goals to me! i don't know that i've ever looked at a scale when i weighed 127...the lowest i remember being was 140 my sophomore year of high school...but i think i was still thinner at that point...i don't really know anymore :)

welcome jackee! good luck with those last 10...they're killing me :)

jem--good luck with the move! i hope everything's okay with the storm.

vicki--wow! a navy seal? that's pretty impressive. that'll be such a fun birthday present! i wish my b/f and i had enough $$ to travel and due stuff together :( oh well! have a good workout!

as for me, i took a yogalates (combo of yoga and pilates) class on friday and a yogafit (faster paced yoga geared towards giving you a bit of a workout too) class yesterday and i'm hooked :) my whole body is still aching, but there's another yogafit class monday i'm going to go to. it's so aweosme because the hour goes by so quickly, and i know that if i was at home doing a DVD, it would probably just drag on and on and on. i still need some cardio and weight-training in my routine, but cardio i can EASILY do on my own, and there are some strength training classes tues/thurs i'm going to start.  i'm still working on food (this weekend was not so good...), but i know how to eat and what i need to do. i'm not so worried about deficits, so i'm not counting cals, but i just need to be better and more disciplined about what and when i eat (aka mindless snacking). i've started chewing gum and that helps SOOOOO much. i also read that chewing sugar free gum after you eat helps reduce plaque build up.  also, if any of you like your magazines, fitness is doing a promotion right now where you get 22 issues (2 years) for $17. so i totally signed up for that :) lots of recipes, tips, strategies, success stories, etc.  i like reading them on the elliptical :)

anyways, hope you all have a good sunday!

hey guys! thanks for all the welcome backs! it's fun to read everyone's posts again :) i'll write more about my trip in my journal, but i'll try to give a brief summary:

great trip--INCREDIBLY stressful however. i was one of two main leaders (there were 16 leaders total) for a group of 70 students, so there was always a lot going on. japan was HOT. i probably sweated out about a pound every day just walkign around :)  didn't do a whole lot of exercise--i went running a few times, but most of the time, i was so exhausted or had so much to take care of that i couldn't work up the will to do it. HOWEVER, you walk everywhere in japan, so that countered all the exercise that i wasn't doing.  it was nice because instead of sitting around most of the day and doing an hour of intense exercise, it was just a lot of consistent, low burn movement.  i wish i could replicate that at home, but i can't walk to the store or anything (unless i want to walk 5 miles over some serious hills there and back with groceries).  i also got into some stress eating towards the end of the trip--i was getting kind of grossed out with my lack of self control. i've never had stress eating like that. but we had lots of people getting sick and i was getting exhausted.  but that's over.  i also wasn't watching what i ate as carefully because i was on a trip and just didn't want to worry about it all the time. so despite ALL of that, i still managed to lose a couple of pounds when i got back :) however, now, i am back UP a couple of pounds (139 this morning).

i hit the gym this AM for the first time since i've been back (i've been running at home or doing DVDs) and it was good to get back. i picked up a schedule of group classes, so i'm going to start doing those. i'm getting tired of just making up my own strength training routines, because i really do a LOT better when i have someone telling me what exericses to do and for how long and at what intensity :) my schedule is a little off, so there are only a few that i can commit to going to every week, but a bunch of others i'm going to go to if my schedule permits (i seriously have like, 10 classes highlighted on the schedule).  when i can't get to the gym, i'll supplement at home.  i'm also eating more healthy and controlling what i put into my mouth :) i really want to tone up and slim down a little bit more (more emphasis on the tone up) so i'm ready to get back into this.

sounds like everyones doing relatively well--despite some labor day indulgences :) stacey--i like that elliptical workout. we dont' have any good cardio stuff at home that i can just do while watching the TV :(

vicki--good luck with the move!

welcome sorayazada!

jem--glad to hear the wgt's going back down! i'm sure you'll be lifting away in no time :)

hey there! any of you remember me???  i see brigitte you've broken through the 130 barrier! wtg! you're just cruising right along! i'm still at the same place I was, but I'm back from Japan now and getting back into an exercise groove.  it's late and i was just partying this weekend so i need to hit the sack, but i'll update more later and read the posts to see how everyone's doing!

hey guys! i am so sorry for my prolonged absence (again) which is actually just going to continue. stuff on my end has gotten pretty busy--i leave for the conference next Friday (oh my god...) so i've been spending most of my days online, but doing stuff for the conference.  people keep asking if i'm excited, but there's so much that has to get done still that i'm not really even thinking about how much fun it will be yet. i'll have fun when i get there :)

yesterday was my 23rd birthday--and it was a nice day. nothing crazy, but had a nice lunch with my mom (i made myself get a salad! but then we had dessert, lol), spent a few hours working at a coffee shop, then had dinner with my b/f's parents and some of our friends (we have dinner every wed night over there and it just happened to fall on my bday) so i got to choose the menu. we also decided that next week, after dinner, we're going to have a small party over at my b/f's apt so we can all hang out before i leave. as a gift (to myself) i bought a new laptop bag/briefcase that is SOOO cool--i love it.  mine is pink leather :) McKlein has great cases for women that are professional and different looking in lots of colors. i also got a business card holder that matches (can also hold credit cards and stuff) as well as some packing aids (toiletry kit and packing cubes to help keep my clothes more organized).  tyler got me a manicure and pedicure at a nice spa so i'm excited for that--he wanted to get it for me and someone else, but he didn't realize that you have to schedule these things pretty far in advance to make sure you can get an appointment. but i'm excited anyways.

as far as exercise--i'm getting back into it pretty well. i've decided that for the rest of the time until the conference, i'm going to amp up the workouts to get in a last kick before i see everyone again :) so i ran on monday, then tuesday and today i did some slim in 6.  i missed my run yesterday, but that's okay. i'm goign to go play a round of golf tomorrow, so that with my run will be plenty of exercise. i did burn it up on tuesday, and it kicked my @$$--i hadn't done it before. i did the whole thing, but had to rest for a couple of reps during some of the exercises. so today i did ramp it up and made it through the whole thing without resting or missing a rep so i'm going to go back to burn it up.

anyways, i'll probably be gone until the end of hte conference (end of August).  i don't remember if i said, but i DID get the internship set up at WMU, so i'm very excited and i think it'll be really good for me. no job prospect, but i'll figure that out when i get back. so i hope everyone is doing well and that some of you guys are still around when i get back! some of you may move into the 130/120 group--but i hope you stay here even if you weigh less than 130 :) hopefully i'll be down a few lbs when i get back from japan!

actually a pretty busy weekend in here!

brigitte--what's the recipe for the cupcakes? just put in one can of diet pepsi with one dry cake mix? did you use regular cool whip or chocolate cool whip? i've been feeling kind of like baking something for whatever reason, lately. i haven't had frozen grapes for a long time--sounds good though :)

vicki--good luck with teh house hunting! it always baffles me contemplating shopping for something that huge. good luck getting in a workout!

wolfie--i haven't checked, but did you put up a pic of your purse? i wanna see it :) and actually, express is one of my favorite stores. that's where i found the one shirt that i bought.  problem is that almost all their shirts right now have ties on the sides (not cool under a suit coat) or rouching all over that just looks odd, or the neckline is cut poorly to go under a coat.  i really liked the style of the one shirt that i got, but they only had it in three colors, and i only like one of 'em. and no good skirts that i saw. :( but i'll probably try there again later--i got this super cute pair of shorts there a few weeks ago that i'm totally in love with.

jem--glad to hear you had a good time with the girls! that is a LOT of seafood :) better than steaks, though! :)

hey tami! welcome! we're all here to help and chat!

stacey--good job getting the salad at lunch! i've been bad about that lately--other dishes always look so delicious!

holly--don't sweat the weekend. we all do it :) but swimming is good exercise :) good luck getting back on schedule

i also need to get back on track--gonna go for a run this morning as soon as i get out of bed and eat a granola bar.  it's nice and cool outside, so that'll be good. not sure how long i'm gonna go for--probably just try to hit my 3 mile mark. i've been planning this 4th of july weekend party with my friends, and we decided to move the party to tuesday night to accommodate a few other ppl who couldn't make it friday, and now one of my best friends--one of the core members of our little group--says he can't actually make it on tuesday.  so i'm pissed that he came up with this idea to move the party, then says he can't make it.  i love the people that we tried to accommodate by changing the date, but they're not really in the core group of friends so i'd rather have them miss out on the party.  so i'm upset about that. grr. but we are going to cedar point on thursday! (40% chance of rain...) hopefully it works out.

chatty chatty today! my goodness! :)

brigitte--all that talk of fruit is making me snacky.  my house is like, void of stuff that makes an actual meal, so it's a little frustrating. i have bits and pieces of meals, but nothing whole :) wtg on the new number! you're so close to 130 that's awesome! did you get your bb pierced yet?

tina--yeah, i think i might try going for a short run tomorrow AM after i wake up.  i'll try the granola bar thing to see how it sits :) and congrats on hitting 135! i'm jealous! :) enjoy your fossil purse! i love fossil stuff :) and that's fun how everyone noticed--you must've worn something that was very slimming on you or something. you reminded me that i've got steamfresh in my freezer! :)

stacey--glad to hear the weight went down :) boyfriends can make things so difficult sometimes! :)

hey there holly! hope to see you in here more frequently soon!

bliss--150 calories? :) i think you'll be okay :)

i got to the gym today for my strength training! yay! then i went shopping to look for a skirt and some shirts to go with my new suit and i only found one. pretty disappointing. i tried macy's but by the time i got there, i was just not in the mood for digging. so i gave up and came home.  now, i'm dinking around before i try to get any real work done while i snack on guacamole. i love guacamole...i just wish avocados had less fat!

stacey--i got a new pair of shoes today, too :) DSW is having their summer sale so i got this great new pair of black pumps for the conference :) i must've spent about 20 minutes debating between these two pairs, and i decided on the ones that are a little cuter and younger rather than more "professional" :)

brigitte--hope the day goes well!

vicki--hang in there :) i haven't tried burn it up yet--so i commend you :) i'm a little bit afraid of it, quite honestly :) i did the firm it up for the lower body and wow did it kill me :)

bliss--sounds like a cool article--i'll have to check it out. see, i gain weight in my lower body, but i also have thick arms--so...i gain weight in my limbs? :)

ap--sounds like a good goal! i don't really try to lose lbs anymore because it's gotten so difficult :) lol--so i just try to get in better shape :)

the internship meeting went very well and they have some really cool ideas about what i'll be doing! so i called to let the ohter company know i'm not interested in the job analyzing money :) so i'll be doing that once i get back from the conference (like, RIGHT after i get back) for 15-20 hrs a week and then look for a part time job to fill in the gap. so i'm pretty excited. didn't make it to the gym today (or out for my run) but i've been doing work and stuff :) heehee. i'm so bad :) i'll go tomorrow! :)

stacey--awesome time on that bike! 8 miles in 35 minutes?! woo! go you :) i'm going to be skipping my AM workout today (i was going to go for a run) because i have a meeting at 11:30 to discuss a potential internship.  i realize that i have about 2.5 hours...but i need to eat, then wait for breakfast to settle, and by that time, i won't have time. so i could go on an empty stomach, but i try not to do that now.  so i'll hit the gym later.  i found some shirts that i wanted there, but i was like, i don't actually need these so i put them back--strong will power on my part :)

but yeah, i'm meeting with someone from Western Michigan Univ. today to discuss my potential internship for next year, so keep your fingers crossed! it'd be in the international programs dept and probably be similar stuff to what i did this year. i also got a call yesterday out of the blue for an interview for a japanese manufacturing company to be a cost planning specialist.  unfortunately, it would be lots of math, accounting, and numbers--which 1. i have little, okay no, experience in and 2. i'm not really a math kinda girl.  i'm decent at it, but never really enjoyed it. so i'm kind of torn because i tend to feel like when things fall into your lap like this, you should go for it.  so i'm goign to see how the internship thing looks and then decide whether or not i want to apply.

stacey--hope you got out of the bleck mood! it's hard when you have those days--although sometimes you just have to give into them.

brigitte--yeah, 5K is a TOTALLY doable distance.  especially if you've got someone with you to chat with, it's a lot of fun. not that the boy and i were talking all that much since we were running, but it was fun to have someone else there with me. hope your taebo starts going better! but yeah--i totally understand you on how quick you lose it :) but it goes to show how quickly your muscles can adapt to a workout and the need to mix things up in your workout routine.

ap--glad that you figured that out! i love shopping for shoes :) i went to look at kohl's today but NOTHIN'! boo. i want to get a new pair of great black heels :) i did check out the posting too--and i think that if i don't have the gym available, it'd be a good thing for me to stick to. i just feel guilty about having a membership to the gym and doing home videos.

elle--welcome to the club! i'm close to where you are--just a year ahead. i graduated in june 2006 and started working out almost every day and eating right back in last october. it'll be harder cuz you'll be in law school and i was just working an 8-5 job so you'll still have studying to do.  but just make the commitment and hold yourself accountable--it's easy to slack, but if you really want it--it's TOTALLY worth it.  i've lost about 30 pounds (just under that) and am down to a size 6 so i'm pretty stoked (in women's, not juniors). but good luck and we're here if you need us!

ap--yeah...the trendline thing is crazy :) mine was way off until i started entering my weight every day with all the fluctuations--then it became more accurate. i dont' really understand the body and weight :) i just let it do what it will and make sure it doesn't go up too high :) i've read that if you fluctuate up more than 3% of your body weight, you should worry.

vicki--i'm not a fan of the 80 minute long ones either :) but i saw an infomercial for slim in 6 today--so now i am more eager to try it out :) but i feel guilty for not going to the gym, and i dont' want to do BOTH workouts...so i have a crisis :)

brigitte--a 5K is 3.1 miles. it's a really great distance to run, because you really get warmed up and work up a good sweat, and by the end you're pretty tired--but not completely wiped out.  it's a good distance for keeping up a good pace. man...132...i haven't seen anything below 136 yet :) but i'm not trying real hard at this point :) i'm kinda hoping that my month in japan with all the walking will help me take off a few pounds, so i'll come back and be like "wow!" that's what happened when i went for study abroad--dropped 15 pounds, then gained it all back REAL quick (of course...i was there for 10 months that time).

did intervals on the treadmill at the gym, but i had a hard time with 'em today--just alternating between 5 mph and 6 mph (2 min 5mph, 6 min 6 mph) so the last set i did at a brisk walk. oh well--still a good workout.  anyways, i need lunch and to do a bunch of work!

so even though I was posting saying that i'm back--i kinda disappeared for a while! oops! sorry! last week got a little bit busy. thursday i went to the beach all day and got BURNED. my stomach and upper thighs are still tender and a little red (almost a week later). i used sunscreen, but just not enough...oh well. friday i played in a golf tournament and won women's longest drive! i've never won that before--it's especially funny because i'm not hitting my driver very well right now, lol :) saturday was the 5K and i had a GREAT time! it was a really nice run--my clock time was 32:52, but i started the race a couple minutes late (we got there a little behind schedule)...so it was closer to 30-31 minutes. we had chips on our shoes, but the chip time isn't up on the internet...only the clock time. boo. oh well. sunday i went shopping with my family in michigan city and it was AWESOME. i got a bunch of stuff without having to pay for any of it :) my parents spoil me and my sister so bad, but it's awesome :) monday i made it to the gym (woohoo!), did some weeding in the yard, then hung out with the boy at night. tuesday i had my last PT session (boo) and my shoulders are KILLING me. we don't do a whole lot with my legs anymore--we really focus on my upper body, which is what really needs it. then i spent the day working on some stuff for the conference, and went to my b/f's slowpitch softball game. he actually did pretty well! especially considering he'd never thrown a softball before, lol. i've gotta get off the couch and get to the gym pretty soon--i'm waiting for breakfast to settle. i woke up at like, 8, but then got caught up doing work online for until about 9:45...so i'm a little behind.

anyways--it seems like everyone is doing pretty well! i'm not going to try to reply to everythign people wrote, but i'll try to keep up from now on :) i think i gained about a pound--my weight is usually around 137-138 now, instead of 136-137. but i guess that's okay :) i'm getting worse about my diet--not nearly as strict...i just like to workout so that is keeping me in shape. anyways, kohl's is having a BIG one day sale today, so i'm planning on hitting that up later today :) heehee.

i still eat an apple (or maybe two) almost every day. just because we've run out of other kinds of fresh fruit in the house. i've still got lots of frozen for my smoothies, so maybe i'll make those again. i haven't had one for a while.

jem--ahh. i think i'll have to use yahoo then.  i'm a roadie :) no beaches close to my house :( i love me some canteloupe :) although pineapple is an absolute favorite.  what i really love is making a fruit salad and putting some on top of cottage cheese--yum!

brigitte--hope that housework is going well!

tina--hope you have fun with your friend! that's very cool--too bad about the weight though :( you should totally get a nose stud :) i love mine--just get little pretty jewels and it's not obtrusive at all. yeah, i don't like the one program thing either, but i think that if i really want to get a good way to firm up, that looks intense.  so once i'm done with the 90 days then i'll do whatever i want :)

all this talk about bananas--now i want one :) i wasn't going to go to the gym for another hour, but i'm thinking about doing it now since i finished my emails. i have a bunch of stuff to do tonight, but i'll do that later anyways.

jem--i tried to get the gmaps pedometer to work, but it wouldn't record any points.  i would choose "start recording" but when i clicked on the map nothing would happen. did i miss somethign? i usually use yahoo!maps because the other ones people have recommended trace routes "as the bird flies" so i would have to click every time i wanted to go around a curve.  it was annoying. yahoo!maps sticks to roads.

stacey--we're all out of bananas at my hosue too :( but luckily we've got a bunch of REALLY tasty apples.  very crisp and nice and sweet. i have apples when they get all grainy. blech. i think the salad is a good choice :) if you get the dressing on the side then just dip your fork before each bite you use a lot less.  PLUS i've found that i like this way even better because you get good salad dressing flavor with every bite and there's not a huge pool at the bottom of the salad!

i had a good run.  once i get myself out there it's awesome and i love it! i just have to get my shoes on and go :) only did abotu 2.5 miles today but i did it in about 26 minutes so that's a good pace for me.  plus i definitely had a good bit of energy left at the end and i made myself pick up the pace and lengthen my stride for the last stretch up to my house.  i'm also going to the gym later today for some strength work but until then, i need a shower and some lunch!

jem--2 hours at the gym?! man. i get too bored :) i'm usually there for about an hour or so.   what'd you end up doing with your evening?

brigitte--the new pic is fantastic! you look so great now! i was at the beach last saturday in my new swimsuit too, and i was just like, whatever. i look fine :)  cant help with the belly piercing--sorry :( i don't think there were any rules about swimming for my nose or cartilage piercings. and eating a banana? uh. not a big deal. at all. they're super-healthy.  i read one dietician's article that said the phrase should be changed to "a banana a day keeps the doctor away"

gabrielle--welcome! something you can also try, is eating before you meet up with your social groups.  if you're already full, you're going to be less tempted to eat. and coffee really isn't bad for you--just watch what you put in it. but i'm more of a moderation kinda gal anyways--so i'll often indulge, i just try not to go crazy.

stacey--really? 3.2 miles? that's crazy! my weight was close to yours today--139.5. not totally sure why it's that high though..hmm..that day off should be nice :) and no clue on the coffee thing. sorry :(

i am pretty sore today.  my body is definitely feeling the workouts again that i had slacked on.  my abs are pretty tight from slim in 6pack. feels good :) gonna run this morning after i eat--so in maybe an hour, then gotta get into the gym for another weight session! woo! i bought this really cute tube top baby doll shirt yesterday at marshall's for like, 12 bucks, so i really want to wear it today :)

brigitte--133 is hardly a bad number :) i haven't even gotten to 135 yet :) and P90X is geared towards really building muscle.  it's not really a starter routine but more for people who have been exercising for a while who want to really kick it up a notch. so people like us! :) but if you're disciplined, it looks like it'd be a great way to take it up a notch and firm up. it comes with a nutrition plan, but i don't think there's a lot of emphasis on it.

jem--hope your day picks up :( do you work out at home too? or mostly just at the gym?

stacey--i've found that i can usually do a lot more than i feel like i can when i jog--i just have to make sure to mentally push myself.  i still don't do much more than 3.2 miles though :) i need to work on that :)

i just found out that a few of the planners for the conference this summer haven't really been doing the work they said they would do or said they were doing, so i have to make some follow up calls today...bleck :) a bit irritating. anyways. got in a good workout at the gym on the elliptical then did slim in 6 pack.  good exercise day!

morning all!

brigitte--i'm pretty sure i'm right.  exhale on exertion--when you're bending forward--is that when you're pulling the weights away from resting position? if so, then that's when you should exhale.  as you return to start, you inhale.  so in floor crunches, you exhale as you sit up--you're going to exhale on whatever the equivalent is for your crunches on the machine.  i could just be imagining it wrong, but on most ab machines i've seen, you exhale when you bend forward.  whenever your abs are being contracted, that's when you exhale.

sounds like you've got a pretty good routine in there, too, stacey! and nice jog! mine are never more than abotu 35 minutes :) i could do more...but i usually don't want to, lol :)

i'm gonna go do some elliptical today at the gym after breakfast--take my cosmo with me :) makes the time seriously fly by! then it's abs later this afternoon.  i don't really have anything to do today, so i'm going to do things slowly :) i also saw an ad for P90X, and am thinking that maybe when i get back and find a job and have some money, i'll commit to doing that and that should help me achieve my goals of lower fat and more muscle.  i'd have to be really disciplined about it though!

hello all! i wanted to drop by and say hello.  sounds like stuff is going well and you guys are getting into some serious workout discussions! i have one thing to add though--i actually think you're breathing backwards, brigitte. you exhale on exertion, like jem said, so you should exhale when you bend forward, or if you're on the floor, when you sit up.

i'm doing a lot better. i had a really nice chat with my b/f about what was going on and just the act of telling someone made me feel loads better.  then i had a nice week where i was really productive, and had a great run last friday.  i hadn't run all week, so i felt really tight when i went out and wasn't sure how i'd do, but i pushed to finish and had my fastest time ever! about 32 minutes.  i emailed people at western michigan university yesterday asking about an internship, and i heard back from one person already saying they'd probably be able to find things to make a really interesting internship and would like to meet next week!

as far as CC related stuff goes, i haven't been exercising hard core like i usually try to, but i have done usually 30-40 minutes 5-6 days a week.  i'm not working at my dad's office now, so my plan is MWF: run in the AM, then hit the gym for weights in the PM.  TR: cardio at the gym then an ab dvd at home.  saturday is rest and sunday is light pilates (20-30) minutes. my weight hasn't budged in about a month, actually, but i'm nto really concerned.  i wear a size 6, sometimes smaller in dresses, so i'm pretty satisfied with that. i still want to build muscle and lose more body fat, but i don't mind if my weight doesn't drop.  just make sure not to gain :)

anyways, i'll probably be back on more often now--but the brief hiatus was good for me.

i totally agree with tina about the different between Si6 and TJ. they're just completely different KINDS of workouts so you're going to be tired in very different ways.  but wtg with teh burn it up--i haven't tried it yet becuase i just get really bored being there for over an hour on the same DVD, lol :)

brigitte--you prolly figured it out by now, but the bermuda shorts are the ones that hit right at the knee or just above. super fun--i'm wearing a new pair today.

stacey--you are gettin' hardcore, girl! that's awesome! i like scheduling workouts because i stay more accountable. my schedule has been a little weird lately, so i haven't been able to get into the morning run-gym after work thing at all.  i'm just trying to put in stuff when i can.

i'm gonna go try the Hip Hop Abs "Total Body Burner" routine while I do some laundry today. i really need to get back to the gym to do my strength training, but didn't think i'd have time today so i didn't take my gym clothes.

earlier i mentioned being a little listless and it just seems to be getting worse.  i'm so tired of people asking "what are you doing now" "what are your plans" that i've just started saying "i don't know" and stopping the conversation.  i knwo thye're just being nice, but i'm in a hard mental place right now and talking to half strangers about my plans for the future is just making everything worse. i'm burned out on planning this conference and applying for every frickin' job someone sends my way and not getting anything. i'm trying to refocus on getting in a schedule of exercise like i used to because that always helps and i feel good when i workout. i haven't talked to my b/f about anything or anyone else for that matter 'cuz i have no idea how to broach the subject.  he doesn't really ask "how are you" so i can't get into it, and it's not like it's an "event" for us to talk about.  i'm gonna talk to him tonight cuz i just had a horrible night yesterday but omg.  so i guess i just wanted to say that i may or may not be on the forum for a while as i try to get stuff kind of straightened out and reinvigorate myself. my diet has been okay but my dedication to exercise is suffering because i don't feel motivated to do anything at all. so hopefully talking to the boy about all this stuff will help but it's just so frustrating and depressing right now--i just have nothing that i know at this point. and that's difficult for me.  so i realize this was kind of an atypical post, but if i'm not around for a while or not myself--this is why. i will be back and i'm sure i'll stop in from time to time. but i'm not stopping my eating or exercise habits--hopefully i'll be getting them back on track.

sorry to hear about the laptop brigitte :( that's too bad. i understand the frustration--i've definitely been guilty of hitting my computers.  i usually just yell, but occasionally get more than just verbally abusive :) haven't broken any yet, though, thank god. hope you get it worked out :( but yeah--if you get a pair of slim cut bermuda shorts they'll look ADORABLE with a little baby doll shirt.  and i think you should get a cute pair of wedge heels to wear with 'em. there's my input :) my mom took me shopping today after graduation, so i have 4 new pairs of bermuda shorts--haha.  and i really want to go to old navy and check out some of their baby doll tanks cuz i know that they'll look awesome. :) got a pair of green, jean, black, and black with white pinstripes :) so cute! lol.  i really wanted a pair of regular shorts, but the juniors won't fit my body and the women's/misses are all cut a little too "mature" for my tastes. so i'll have to check out old navy or express later. but for now the bermuda shorts are great!

vicki--i'm like you. i do enjoy my alone time and being able to do whatever i want whenever i want, but only once in a while.  i get lonely if i have too much time to myself--i'm social so i like going out and being around other people.

graduation was really LONG.  about 3 hrs.  but the commencement speaker was FANTASTIC--i think that's the first graduation speech i've ever really listened to--and it made me want to read her books (anne pachett/pachet--she's a novelist).  but then shopping which was fun, and dinner out with my parents, then hit balls and finally back home :) tomorrow is another golf scramble so that'll be fun, but an early morning (for me). anyways, final episode of tudors is on tonight so i gotta finish a new cover letter before it comes on! got 20 minutes! heehee :)

well hello and welcome to the vicki and brigitte show! :) haha, you guys are too funny.

i dont' think people get too old for the baby dolls.  i'm assuming that you wear the like, baby doll shirts and just have shorts or capris on underneath? cuz that's really cute and i think it'd be fine on most people. do you have any bermuda shorts, brigitte? if you don't you should TOTALLY get some! i got this pair from old navy that i love and wear all the time.  i wore capris all last summer, but they're all too big now, so i have one pair of jean capris, one pair of khaki bermuda shorts, and a couple pairs (2) of shorts that still look okay.  i have a few other pairs, but they're all really baggy and so look pretty frumpy on me.  unfortunately, i have no $$ to buy nicer pairs of shorts.  c'est la vie.  i might buy a new pair anyways--we'll see :) i've got my new sundress, and a couple of skirts that i can wear, too. so it's sustained me :)  but brigitte--i say, get a pair of khaki bemudas, a couple of tank tops to layer, and a fun belt. :) my new sundress and the dress i got for my friend's wedding are both baby doll cuts-so they hit a little above the knee.  my friend told i looked like i stepped straight out of the 70's at the wedding :)

i was up to 139 this morning (eek!) haven't seen that number for a while.  but i drank a TON on friday and ate a fair amount.  yesterday i didn't eat much at all cuz of the hangover and ridiculous dehydration :) went to bed around 9 :) lol.

hope you're enjoying your weekend, vicki--definitely sounds like it :) i love being at home and watching girly movies :)

it's my alma mater's graduation today, so i'm giong to that at 1 in my new sundress! first time to wear it :) yay! i would go straight from church, but i don't really have a sweater or anything to put over it, and it's a little skimpy on top for church. so looks like i gotta come home and change--hopefully i won't be late to the ceremony.  and my night at the bar--AWESOME. they had a mechanical bull which i rode 3 times :) did i say that earlier? anyways.  it was SWEET. i had a great time. and we decided we're going to cedar point on the 5th of july then we're all gonna chill in ann arbor for the weekend.  then i leave 2 weeks later for japan. agh! but very exciting :) i'm getting a new suit for my bday from my parents, and then i'll have to get some shirts and stuff to wear under the suit and whatnot. prolly a new dress, too, i think :) yay! have a good sunday all!

kinda slow in here today!

stacey--that was pretty funny :) the boy and i are usually pretty lowkey, too, but tonight is special :) we actually had some mexican last night, but i only ate a half a chimichanga and the boy ate the other 1.5 :) i counte calories today and i'm sittin' pretty good, so i've got about 700 cals to play with tonight.  enjoy the rain :)

hey there brigitte. should be interesting having the kids home now! glad the sleepover went well--those can be tricky :) i'm totally addicted to frozen soft pretzels--i love 'em with some mustard :) heehee.

well, i gotta buckle down and get some work done before i can go out tonight. *sigh*

hey guys! sorry i've been gone the past couple days. i've been busier than anticipated working at my dad's office.  it's like, a solid 3.5-4 hours of work a day which i was not expecting (i was thinking 2-3).  it should slow down now though since i've got the office caught up so now it's just day to day filing.  sadly, this was also the first week i didn't get to the gym at all since...i think...october. wow.  i got sick tuesday night and so i worked out at home, but didn't want to go to the gym where there are all those germs and i could get other ppl sick--bleck.  so i took wed off from exercise, but i did do workouts yesterday and today.  so that's good! :)  i only read this page of posts--so sorry for whatever i missed!

pretty--hey there! it's great to join a gym--just make sure you use it! that vacation will be great!  can't wait to see new pics!

vicki--my weight does that sometimes, too. it's really weird. but as long as it's not a bad weight.... :) enjoy your vegging weekend :) those are awesome--just be careful not to snack too much--that's what i do :)

stacey--you crazy runner/biker! those winds sound crazy :) kinda funny imagining you trying to bike in them :) haha.

girlier--have a great vacation! that's awesome you feel good about how you're looking even if you're not at that special number or whatever. be confident and you'll look AWESOME.

wolfie--that's so cool about your weight! so all that waiting is starting to pay off! good for you for sticking to it and not giving up.  have fun this weekend with the concert and wedding.

i've got my college buddies coming into town today so we're all gonna hit the bars tonight so i'm pretty psyched about that.  i still gotta get my butt into work soon after i eat lunch.  my college's graduation is on sunday so i'm planning on wearing my new sundress :) yay new clothes! my weight's been really steady...not totally sure what i want to do.  i really NEED to start counting better--i'm not sure if i'm eating too much or too little at this point.  but i'm not gaining, so that's good.  maybe drink more water, i've been slacking there.  hmm. i've just been really listless lately cuz my life just feels like it's dragging. but i keep pushing myself to exercise and stay active, so that's good--i just need to find something to get me to focus again.  maybe i just need to MAKE myself focus again :)

girlier--yay for lower weight! woohoo! that was so nice of the boy to make you dinner! i feel like maybe i should make dinner for my b/f sometime cuz i always eat food over at his place so he's usually responsible :)

vicki--good to hear the lbs are gone! if you have serious itchy eyes--i totally recommend these prescription eyedrops called Patanol.  can't use 'em over contacts, but they work wonders. have fun with the range. golf is really frustrating when you don't play well, but it's great when you are :) haha.  if you can, see if you can get a couple lessons from a pro--it'll be good to help you build a swing.  and etiquette is a HUGE part of golf so if you ever have questions, feel free to ask.  i played on teams in high school and college so i know most of the rules and how you're supposed to treat the course, etc.

shal--lately, i've been getting my nicer clothes at express and casual over at old navy.  when i can't afford it i'll try jc penny or kohl's, but express and old navy are my favorites. a lot of ppl like american eagle, but i've never bought anything there. i'm 22, 5'5", 136 lbs. sometimes i look in the juniors clothing, but my problem is that i have thicker legs than most women/teenagers but a narrow waist, so junior pants that fit my hips/thighs just hang off my waist.  plus juniors sometimes doesn't make allowances for the fact that i have a butt :) so most of the time i only get tops, dresses, and skirts in juniors and find pants elsewhere. just hang tough--i've been doing this since october 2006 and i've lost about 30 lbs.  so it takes time and hardwork, but it does get easier.  once you get a feel for what and how much you can eat, it gets better.

wolfie--hope the health check goes well! dont' sweat the #, it'll move again. you're doing GREAT with your exercise so just focus on that.

stacey--i'm not a good stretcher either *oops*. but i think the best time is after your warm up before the run.  you dont' want to stretch cold, and i actually read that it's not good to stretch right after the run either.  so maybe stretch after a good cool down and a little break.

my run this AM was GREAT! totally invigorating :) i think it helped that it was only about 60 degrees out so i wasn't pouring in sweat or roasting.  and i had 1/2 bagel sandwich for bfast before the run, and i think having something substantial might've given me an extra boost. my stomach sat a little heavier than i would have liked, but no biggie. i didn't even hit that mental fatigue point and i ran about 3.3 miles all together (35 minutes). so not fast, but i was solid.  now i gotta get my butt into work! ttyl!

mom--i hate allergies, too.  they've been REALLY bad this year. usually i only have 'em for a couple of weeks in may but mine are still goin' strong. ick. fun with the bras and that's cool you found a suit! i need some new bras, but i'm in this very awkward phase between 34 and 36 and i don't have $$ to buy a new one :) so i'm making do :)

wolfie--wtg with the weights! i haven't done the firm for quite some time, but i think i always used 8 lb for the heavy.  but that's cool you got through it!

lindsey--welcome!  don't get burnt out! you may have just jumped in too quickly--a  lot of the time you need to ease into something like this if you want to make it a real lifestyle change.  it can take a while for the scale to move (a month for me at first) and at this point, it takes longer to lose weight a lot of the time.  i'm 5'5" at at 136-138 and i really only lose about 2 lbs per month now. my advice: make sure you have 1-2 days off from exercise every week and don't have any forbidden foods.  moderation is the key in everything and it's so true wtih this stuff.

stacey--i'm gonna go for a run this morning in about an hour, i think. sounds like you've got a good workout schedule :) i like having something set that i do so i always know what i'm supposed to be doing :)

i gotta go grab some breakfast and then go out for a nice morning run! i used to never eat before a workout, but i know that's not good for you so i always try to eat something light like yogurt an hour before i go out. i read that liquids sit easier in the stomach and are less likely to cause jostling problems.  i still prefer not eating, but trying to get out of that habit--and since i'm not crunched for time now i can eat and wait an hour before i go.  then it's to the office for some work! yay $$! then after that it's to the gym for some strength training.  it doesn't feel like tuesday at all. hmm.

hey guys! everyone have a decent monday? (cuz you know they're never good) :)

have fun at dinner brigitte!

welcome boda! i'm about the same height (5'4.5" although last DR appt said 5'5") and i'm hovering between 136-138 right now and wearing a size 6 or tight 4 (only sometimes).  i'm pretty happy with my size right now, but i still have some squishy areas that i'm trying to tighten up.  i don't need to be like, 5% body fat or anything, but i'd like to get below 20, i think. and with that kind of a low intake, you'll need to be careful when you start exercising and make sure you eat more to support the extra activity--don't wanna stress your body too bad! not a veggie, tho--sorry :(

hey there ap! totally hear you on the wedding thing...i got another one in a few weeks--oh well.

vicki! wow 5 inches in one month off of just the waist?! that's amazing!  if you go here it'll describe how and where to take your body measurements--totally helpful. i should put it in my profile.

thanks for stopping by tara! hope to see you again soon!

shalynu--hear you on the shrek thing. the first two were so great but this one had no new characters up to par with the ones in the second. oh well.  there are so few good trilogies out there. oh well.

girlier--i think i'm going to have a heavy drinking friday night so i'll have to drink lots o water this week to prep and then a lot to detox, haha. a new country western bar just opened up that has a mechanical bull so i really wanna go check it out :)

jem--wow! 28.5 inches?! that's amazing! keep up the good work!

stacey--glad to hear the jogging went well! the shin splints will probably go away after you run a few times--i think it's just that you don't use those muscles in your calves often so they need to get stronger. running shoes are so expensive, i don't really have the cash to invest in a good pair.

well, golf actually went very well! the rain held off the whole morning, then right after my dad and i got inside with our hamburgers, it started to POUR.  but our group played really well and were only one stroke off first place! but we got third because two groups had 63, and we tied at 64 with another group for 3rd and they won the tie breaker. but i was hitting better (not well, but better, haha) and putting decent so that was nice.  started part time work at my dad's office, and this should last a few weeks so that's great! there's a lot more work there than i thought there was :) i'm going to go run in the AM before work, then take my gym clothes with me and go do some strength training after cuz the gym is just down the street. perfect! anyways, i am totally pooped so i'm gonna get some zzz's.  have a good night all!
