| Just a word of caution when doing lunges. Be careful of the amount of weight, and use correct form, and be sure you are properly warmed up before you start. I just tore inside thigh muscle yesterday doing lunges with weights in each hand. Distinct "Pop", pain and feeling of muscle contracting as if it came unattached. Not pleasant at all. Apparently I slightly over-extended my lead leg and that was all it took. I can get around, but won't be doing much leg work for awhile until this heals. Now see that some authorities say to not do lunges. And I was doing so good too. |

| I will offer the opinion that neither bike is correct. My wife and I take hi-intensity spin classes on stationary bikes and her highest cal. burn using a heart rate monitor is about 350 cal in a 60 minute session. This is very intense, exercising to the point of exhaustion. She weighs about 118#. It would be almost impossible to burn 300 cals. in 20 minutes.
Others may offer differing opinions, this is just our experience |

| We tried a new area ride today, Chickamauga National Battlefield near Chattanooga TN. We just moved to Chattanooga area about 4 weeks ago, so we were out prospecting for good riding areas. It seems a great place to bike, very modest traffic with 25-35 mph speed limits, lots of nicely paved roads, mix of fields and woodlands, plenty of places to stop and even picnic areas if you are so inclined. Oh yes, and mostly flat with some modest climbs that were no problem even with our hybrid bikes and packs. Lots if interesting monuments and civil war history too. We got in a quick 20 miles and plan to return soon with our road bikes. Saw several bikers so seems a popular spot. Probably nearly deserted during the week. Try it out if you are in NW. Ga or E. TN. | Hi all, I am finally back and riding a bit again. We have moved to Chattanooga, TN and spent most of the last 2 weeks unpacking and buying stuff for the house, and waiting for deliveries and installers. On a first name basis with the guy at the cardboard recycle center, lol. I am NEVER moving again, lol. We are getting in our morning short ride again, and planing a longer road run this coming week. Just a little layoff and you notice the difference in fitness level very quickly. Am getting back to my routine now, as I would still like to lose about 3 more pounds. Regards, Norman |

| Hi Charlotte,
Having several different ways to exercise keeps us from becoming bored. I wouldn't like to have only one way to exercise. Some of our walks are now fast walks with our dogs on local mountain bike trails at the nearby state park. Great fun, varied terrain, lots of wildlife, and the cross country hiking burns some cals. We are always looking for new ways to burn some cals., but we are really loving the cycling. Norman |

| Hey Dan,
I know exactly what your mean. Judie goes past me on the climbs like I am stopped. All I ever hear is "passing left", lol. I think she looks around for routes with all hills. We do really enjoy biking together, not quite at your level, but we have lots of fun. I am going to try to get down to 155 and see how that feels, probably the lowest I would want to go. Have fun with your mountain test, I can only imagine how tough that will be. Regards, Norman |

| Hi CD,
Just thought I would post a little testimonial for cycling. My wife and I started a healthy eating, calorie counting and exercise new way of life in Jan 07. We decided we wanted to add cycling as a regular part of our exercise plan. We had always biked some, and so committed and got new bikes. Today I hit my orginal goal of losing 30# down to 160# in less than 6 months. My wife is down to 121# from 159#. We bike at least 3 times a week and are now up to around 20 miles per session with some serious hill climbing. So for us cycling was a great way to drop some weight in addition to the 5-6 miles we walk most days. We have also added weight training 2 days a week. And we swim in the lake 3 times a week. We like to ride out in the country, find it very relaxing and interesting too. I would highly recommend it as a good exercise for your weight loss and to tone and condition your body. If you like the exercise bike indoors, you will love to ride outside. I am 64 and my wife is 59 and if we can do it I know you will have no problem. Good luck. Regards, Norman |

| Weight Loss | scale issues!! anyone else? | Jun 15 2007 03:02 (UTC) |

| Need to weigh at same time each day (if weighing daily) and in the same condition (before eating, after bathroom, etc.) and scale must be on hard surface (floor), not on rug or carpet. Will give inaccurate reading on flexible surface.
Not unusual to vary 2-3# day to day. If 5 or more, something is wrong with scale or your method of using it. If the variance bothers you, just weigh weekly and use the weight chart here to see your average. That will likely trend downward long term if you are eating right and exercising. Regards, Norman |

| Wow Carrie, I didn't realize that the auto/bike conflict was that common. I think the drivers just do not recognize a bike as a vehicle sharing the road that is entitled to its space in the lane.
At least it all ended well this time. Hopefully we can all avoid this in the future, be aware out there everyone. Lot's of thunderstorms and rain here now, so no riding this evening. Oh yeah, we did a new MTB single trac on Saturday, about killed us, lol. I almost went over the bars twice. Once a sapling caught my left brake lever and brought things to an abrupt halt. Then a little later my rear wheel wedged between two roots and slammed me into the bar again. My wife was keeping up fine until the hairpin turns with an sharp climb. Front wheel just drove into the ridge rather than climbing and she gouged her shin when she lost the pedal. We were a little sore, battered and bruised, but thought it was fun. We may be a little too old for these off road excursions. Can you say "paved bike path", lol. Happy riding to all Norman |

| Hi all,
Wife and I got out early this morning before it got too hot. Had a great 20 mile spin through some new rural areas, very nice. Coming back to our parking area we have a couple of hundred yards on busy 2 lane road. We ride the right hand side as usual, until I can see my parked vehicle, I then check behind and move to the center of the lane and signal for a left turn. A car is coming up behind me now, and he decides to pass on the left as I am turning. Now I am still clearly giving the left turn signal but on he comes. Finally he realizes oops that is not going to work and yanks it back to the right almost hiting another car in the right lane. My wife who had held back figured I was going to get hit. No impact, made the turn and alls well. We were talking about the driver, and decided that since it was a young kid, perhaps he had never seen a left turn hand signal and thought I was directing him to the left lane. Who knows, you gotta be alert all the time. We had a good ride, just the last 100 feet were a bit hairy. Regards, Norman |

| Ahhh, hill climbing, actually I have improved my climbing a lot, but still have one small nagging problem.
I keep hearing "passing left" as my wife goes by and drops me like a bad habit on her merry way up the mountain. On some of the longer switchback climbs, she actually gets out of sight before I "spin" my way to the top. I am blaming it on her 118# and my 161#. I don't have a chance, lol. I have a plan though, I am going down to 155# and then I am sure I will be able to stay in sight of my cycling partner when we go climbing "together". Thats my story for the amusement of all Regards, Norman |

| Hi all, You guys are scary, 300 mile weekends and 31mph racing, simply amazing. I got out early (7:30) this morning and did a little 20 mile loop. Had plenty of legs left, but hands and butt a little tired. Hopefully my riding technique will improve and all parts will feel better. How do you avg. 17 mph on those long rides? I can hit 17-20 on the flats and up to 25-28 on down slopes, but climbing I am hard pressed to maintain 8-10 on some of the hills ("granny gear is your friend"), so I avg around 12-13mph for the whole ride. Maybe it is a little more hilly on some of my rides, or could be just the old body, lol. Anyway, the road cycling has helped us drop some serious weight so all is good. Regards, Norman |

| Would love to join. I am 64 and my wife and I are exercising and biking to help us with total fitness and weight loss. I have lost 26# since mid Feb and have about 4 more to lose. My wife has lost 37# in the past 6 months and is maintaining. We are located in Anderson, SC and we have 6 bikes. Latest are Specialized Roubiax Comp Triple and wife's is a Ruby Comp Triple road bikes. We are loving those 18# bikes after pushing some 38# hybrids down the road. We also occasionally ride some single track trails in the area with some older Diamondback MTB's. Our hybrids are our main touring bikes, town, sightseeing, with front and rear bags, and racks. We usually get in four rides a week with the road bikes of about 16 to 20 miles. Also have great fun jogging the mountain bike trails in a nearby state park with our dogs. 3 Labs and a Golden Retriever, we do that every day with 2 of the dogs. All the exercise is so we can eat pretty much what we like and still be losing weight, LOL!! Looking forward to hearing from all the bikers. Regards, Norman |

| 64 yr old male. Weight down from 190 to 166 on way to 160. Bought new road bike and riding every day. Weight lift 3-4 times a week for upper body, strech excercises everyday for back, and jog mountainbike trails with our dogs every evening. Starting to really get in decent shape. If I live long enough, I should be really ripped, lol. Seriously, this site has helped me a lot, and I feel better than have for 30 years. Embrace the new lifestyle, you will never regret it. Age is just a number, and 52 is a "small" number. |
