Motivation Living in a new culture where food is front and center! Jan 14 2009
20:31 (UTC)

Hello!

I went to Ghana for a month and stayed with in local homes and villages.  While I was there I told them I was a vegetarian.  I thought I was gaining so much weight because I ate a lot of rice and pasta and cookies and crackers.  However probably because of all the exercising I did from even just walking much more then I did in the States I actually lost weight.  If you really can't cut the food out and I understand being a guest in someones country or home, then see if you can work more exercise into your week like hiking and walking.

And they love lybations in Ghana as well!Wink

Yea that is what I mean.  It is just the kind I was talking about and that maybe other flavors have HFCS.  That is it I am done. I just wanted to share not have a debate.  Eat them if you like them and they are healthy enough for you or don't.  Done.
Foods Sugar-Free Jell-o Pudding Aug 16 2008

I love the SF Jello Pudding snacks and agree that the ingredients are scary but that is pretty much what you get with a lot of  things that are reduced "this" or low in "that"  I will eat them but with everything it is all about give a take.

Like you could have a very small amount of ice cream made with all whole milk and cream or you could have a bigger portion of some kind of reduced fat/ cal brand for the same amount of cals. but it may have other weird ingredients in it.

I think that as long as you are not only surviving off of processed  foods and you are careful how it is fitting in to what ever else you are eating that day, that it is ok as a treat or to help balance a craving.  Again it is a personal choice as to what you feel better with putting into your body and how it helps satifiy you in the bigger picture.  And there are also plenty of diebetics out there who don't always have such a choice too.  ;-)

Well the brand La Tortilla Factory and kind that I am talking about Made with extra virgin olive oil and and whole grain white and oat fiber has no sugar or HRCS in it.  I am looking at the  bag right now so maybe you are talking about a different brand or a different flavor????

I don't really eat them as tortillia but rather as wraps, Like I will roast or grill some veggies and eat that on them with some hummus.  I guess I didn't think they tasted odd because of the stuff I put in them???  Oh well I am glad to hear that they really aren't loaded with HFCS...I don't remember reading that on the bag but hey you do REALLY need to read labels.

Just wanted share!

This is actuall a good question.  I never eat pizza a big chains.  It is usually from a local place.  I also never really know what to log it as. I heard a rough estimate of a regular cheese slice normal/thin crust is about 200 cal a slice.  Of coarse you really can't know exactly but I guess it is in the ballpark????

I actuall just posted this in the foods forum but I thought it might appy here as well.

I just wanted to share that I found these wraps made by a brand "La Tortilla Factory" and besides being yum and the larger ones they are pretty awsome in the nutruion facts as well!

One large wrap is only

 100 cals

3g of fat (made with exta virgin olive oil (no sat fat)

13g of of dietary fiber!!!!!

8g of protien!!! ( not bad for a carb food)

Thought that was pretty good for a wrap/soft tortilla.

Foods turkey burgers? Jun 03 2008
00:26 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice I didn't really notice that when I bought it and from now on I will definately check! Sometimes they really don't have as much variety on turkey so I will have to keep my eyes open.  Luckily I have been watching what else I have been eating and with the turkey burger included my chlosterol for the day was only 100-110 which is still ok.  But you are right since 80mg of that came from one patty!!!

Thanks again!

I don't have an answer but I was wondering the same thing as well.  Sometimes I will run on the treadmill or the elliptical for 15-20 min and then I will do weights and my heart rate will drop.  I was also wondering should I leave my heart rate monitor on while doing the weights or just while I am doing cardio.

So sorry i can't answer your question and wasn't any more help but I am also wondering about what you were saying as well.

If you want to keep half an avocado for the next day with out it getting really brown. When you cut it in half save the side with the pit in it.  Don't take it out of that side til you are going to eat it. Plus if you use a little lemon/lime juice like someone else mentioned it should be fine for the next day!

Oh and as far as ripening....never put them in the fridge...same as tomatoes.

I love avocados....it is such a shame that they are so high in calories though.  I could eat a whole one straight from the peel when they are ripe
Foods When you HAVE to eat fast food Jun 01 2008

I hardly ever eat at fast food places BUT....

I understand sometimes depending where you are you don't have a choice.

One really good example is when you are driving cross country or from state to state and you are stuck on major interstate highways.  Yea all the stops are fast food joints.  One time my boyfriend and I veered of the main coarse to follow some signs to an actual family owned resturant that was advertised since we wanted some real food and not just a burger joint only to find they were not even open anymore.  So to the trucker stops it was.

The important thing is to try and make healthier choices out of what your option might be in those situations.

On a side note sometimes people forget that you can stop into a grocery store to get lunch/dinner on the go as well now a days and your options there are a lot better then a Mc Donalds.

Thanks so much!

I will have to try a garden burger.  I have always wanted to try something like that.  I am not down with black beans but I know they make'em with other yummy veggies so I will have to give it a try!

Thanks!

I never heard of that equation before, that is just what it said on the back of the package and it was 8g of fat.  So maybe these patties aren't made with lean enough turkey meat????

Oh well It is better then a regular burger and if I am balancing out everything else I am eating that day it should be fine.

I was just trying to get more protien into my meals since I don't eat any seafood and rarely ever eat red meat.  So I pretty much eat or order chicken all the time.

I was just surprised that is got a D.

Thanks for your help and input!

I am no expert but I recently bought a Polar Heart Rate Monitor and I basicly use it to help keep track of how many calories I am burning so I can then balance it in with what I am eating.  I think the 135-153 is probably the fat burning range (where you may be moving slower but pushing harder like high resistance) and 160-180 would me more of a high intensity cardio range.  Exactly where your heart rate should be depends I think on exactly what you might be training or doing for that work out.

I would guess that if you wanted to be able to run further or longer then you might want to keep your heart rate in the 135-153 range so you could do just that.

Either way your total calories burned  plus your normal body expenditure verses what you you are consuming is what is going to help you to loose weight.

I hope that helps a little.  There might be others who could explain this in more detail.

I like Cabbot 75% reduced fat white cheddar when I am in the mood for a harder type of cheese.  IT is only 60 cal per ounce and is lower in fat then many other cheeses.  So it is great to shred and use a little on other foods.  I use it on sandwhiches too or if I want a little snack.

They also have 50% but I don't taste a huge difference between the two so I usually go for the 75%.

Oh and athanos reduced fat feta is really good on omlets and in salads too.  I love cheese!

Well your options to me are continue to avoid her and these comments for the rest of your life. (Not my first choice)  Try talking to her directly and politely first and also talking it over with your husband.  He should support you and your comments infront of her as well.  Or just really tell her how you feel which could happen in the wrong place at the wrong time in a bad way if you keep bottling all these emothions up and never call her on it.  Whether she is crazy, OCD or has an ED.  You may never change her but you need to have the satisfaction of being able to voice your own thoughts and feelings.

Wow I would have asked for my co-pay back for that advice.  I had a friend once who I later found out had an Eating disorder.  She was having all of these problems with her stomache and went to the doctor and pretty much told them that she thought she was having problems because she was "fasting"

The doctor told her that he normally doesn't reccommend people to do this but that she should eat some french fries.
Yea well....she got help but not from this guy!

It happens the important thing is to get a second opinion or make sure that you don't get so fustrated that you don't take care of yourself.

Fitness feeling a little down and confused... Jan 11 2008

Thanks, I use the ellipticals that they have at the gym and since that is the only one I really use they seemed pretty consistant with-in themselves at-least.

I guess I just feel a little down because I was really proud of myself for being able to up my calories burned over the past few months to find out now that it could all be wrong and I could actually be eating over what I set out to if that is the case.

Oh well I guess I will just get a heart monitor.

I wanted to know if other people ran into this problem to because you don't find out these things unless you ask.

Thanks
Fitness heated Yoga Jan 10 2008

I have gone to two places to do Hot Yoga and the first place was amazing and I really liked it because it was like a real Vinyassa class only done in a hot room so you could really streach.  It did make you sweat a lot which the biggest problem for me was my hands were slipping on the mat.  But because it is so humid It really made you think and work on your deep breathing which I liked too.  I really liked it.

However...

I did take it at another place once and it was not good at all.  The instructor just sat in front of the class barely doing anything and telling us what to do.  That class I actually got light headed at too and didn't feel so good.

So I would try it out see if you like it but probably try to go to a place that specializes in all kinds of yoga and is a yoga center and not a gym.  Not all the time but usually the people who teach at the centers are more about the practice of the art form of yoga and not just getting you through a workout.

Well I really don't like the tredmill because I get shin splints and I hate to run and I have already lost close to 20 pounds using the elliptical.  But I will investigate into a heart monitor and take a closer look at how many miles I am generally doing. Thanks
