Ok, I wasn't going to say anything, considering all the other advice you've gotten. But your comment about getting from 2000 to 1500 raised a flag with me. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT cut your calories down too drastically right off the bat. Honestly, it's just begging to fail when your body gets so hungry it can't take it anymore.

Well, #1, eating too little won't cause a plateau. That word is WAY too universally used at this point. It WILL, however, cause you to stop losing weight because your body thinks its starving to death.

I have had two elliptical machines now, and I'll tell ya, I will NEVER spend less than $1000 for a machine again. My $300 Sears machine was GARBAGE! And the $800 machine by Horizon... wow... I swear I wish I could mail them this thing piece by piece! As a taller person you need to consider the stride length as well. Most home machines come with a VERY short stride length. It can be quite odd for you have longer legs. If you are able to go outside and walk, stick with that if you aren't willing to spend the money to get a good machine. I can't, owing to doctor's orders, and I know I'll have to cough up the money for a good elliptical. |

I really commend you wanting to get the weight off fast, but I think in order for you to find the success you want you need to really adjust your attitude towards all of this. First, loosing 20 pounds per month just isn't healthy and likely wouldn't be sustainable. The recommended healthy loss is 1-2 pounds a week. Shoot for that, and if you actually get more loss, great!! When I first started out, I was loosing 3 or 4 pounds some weeks, but it wasn't because I was starving myself. (I actually never quite understood this and it stopped as I got closer to goal) Second, eating a PB&J is hardly weak. It sounds like you don't have an entirely healthy relationship with food. Do some reading here on the site and learn about food and how to eat. Being afraid of food is really not good and will lead to future problems. My biggest advice. Use the tools on this site to get the numbers you need to be working with for calorie intake. These numbers are based on scientific formulas and evidenced by the number of successes here, they work! |

I think that there are some excellent cases made here for a treadmill. I do know a lot of people use them and swear by them. I think, however, that you need to examine your own physical condition before purchasing. Perhaps even speak to your doctor. I use an elliptical machine, have for a long time now. Why?? Because my orthopedic surgeon said so. Would I use it if not for that?? Actually, probably not. I'd either go outside and walk or run, or I'd get a treadmill. Unfortunately for me, I'm stuck. I can't even run 4 steps in a parking lot without being in pain for a week. So, I think your own condition dictates some. |

I'm not going to comment on whether your weight is right for you. However, in doing some reading, I can tell you, set point isn't a set in stone number. You CAN change your bodies set point. So, don't feel that it's just the end of things. Do a little online research, there are some great articles out there about getting your setpoint to move. |

To those who are suggesting eating your BMR... I'm curious if you have some backup regarding that. I've heard it any number of times around here and actually sort of fell for it for a while. However, finding no scientific proof of it, and finding that it didn't work for me, I'm thinking it doesn't work as perfectly as some say. Not bashing... just curious if there is something out there I'm missing. |

Well Gang, sorry to say, I may be going the way of our friend Meisha. I simply don't have the time to read all that passes me by in a day. Sort of a changed atmosphere that I'm just not flowing with I guess. I will try to check in, but things just aren't the same somehow. |

Well, here it is, Monday again. I learned something very important this weekend. It is actually possible to live for two days eating nothing but cake scraps and buttercream icing. However... I wouldn't recommend it. THIS is why I don't bake very often. So much happened here this weekend... guess I should have checked in more!! And... 2BB... cat is evil... but I love her anyway! |

M&M... Now its Saturday!! We are only 18 hours ahead of the East Coast of the US. Trust me when I say it took me quite a while to figure it out. I have separate clocks on my ipod that tell me the time zones in each of the places family and friends are. So confusing! As for weekends, I don't necessarily do anything because it's the weekend. I do eat differently, believe it or not sometimes less, because I'm normally moving around more. All depends on what we are doing. Rainy weekends are hard, because we don't get out. Nicer weekends, I'm doing my shopping, playing golf, that sort of thing. Boots... Hope you're able to come to a final conclusion on the job hunt. I suspect many would say you were very lucky to have many to choose from when so many can't find even one! 2bb... Answering an above question, I tried green tea once or twice. I must be very sensitive because it made me twitchy. I barely drink half a cup of coffee a day, so I guess my energy will have to come from something besides caffeine. Still no decision on the weather this weekend. Have cakes to get crumb coated today and cupcakes to fill. Evil cat decided I needed to get up at 5am... GRRRR!! |

UGH... you know, all the issues aside, I can't WAIT until the election season is over! The contention, the in fighting, so divisive! It is interesting to sit here, sort of "out of the country" and watch. Guam is an American territory, so they are definitely interested, although they can't vote. The political season for local government is going on now though, and BOY do these people LOVE politics... HAHAHAHA!!! I have nothing to offer for salmon I'm afraid. Years and years in Alaska and I still can't stand the taste of salmon. Baked cakes last night. One 9 x 13 sheet cake, which will be split and stacked to make a cute Frankensteins bride. The filling is blackberry mousse. Also made cupcakes with the same recipe. I'm going to try filling them as well I think that would make them more interesting. I had a little taste. YUM!! I've discovered, it isn't the cake that causes me diet issues... it's the icing. I LOVE buttercream icing. The cupcakes are going to be little mummy faces. Pictures will of course be posted. |

Happy Thursday Gang!! Yeah, yeah, I know most of you aren't here yet. But we're getting Thursday started well here. Mostly sunny this morning, which is rare during rainy season. I got to move into a new office this morning. Newly renovated and it has a window. I hung my brand new Bachelors Degree diploma proudly on the wall. I have now sent back ANOTHER two pairs of jeans that didn't fit. I swear, I'm about to give up jeans for good!! What is the deal with clothing companies who can't figure out that women have long legs too????? I have shopped at one company who carries nothing under a 36" inseam, but BOY are they pricey!! Guess I have to break down and do it! Boots... In some ways I envy you. I would go stark raving nuts if I was still in bed at 2pm! Sleeping in in our house is 6:30am. Any later than that, and I just MUST get up and get moving. |

I'm with you 2bb, 8000 people is just too many, especially in an emotionally charged group like that. There are so many places I'd like to go and events I'd like to attend that I really consider skipping because of the number of people. Maybe its a personal bubble thing. I hate it when people get into my space! Friends... have discovered a yummy "snack". Serving of brown rice, with a little cinnamon and slenda. YUM!!! I really like brown rice, I know some people don't, but it has so much more goodness than white rice. Speaking of cinnamon... I ground some "fresh" by putting cinnamon sticks in the coffee gringer. The scent is HEAVEN!!! So much nicer than pre-ground! Cinnamon is a very good for you thing I read. |

Meisha!!! Don't leave!! There is never any pressure to post every single day around here! Come in when you have something thrilling to say, you're part of the Gang! Honestly, I'm here often because I'm trapped in an office and y'all are my touch with reality!! Green_eyes... My commendations of beating the dastardly Krispy Kreme. Have to admit, I don't like them much, not that you can get them here anyway. However, Winchells is a staple here on Guam and I've beaten MANY of their goodies over the last year. M&M... I highly recommend trying new produce. Being so close to Asia here, we've come across a few new ones. We get these Asian pears that are AMAZING as well. I don't like papaya much... and the local mangos aren't that good. However, regular mangos are yummy... as are the ones from Mexico. Greetings to all the Gang! Had day 2 of intervals last night and OUCH again!! Today will be a regular run. I'm trying to mix it up a little, hoping that'll recharge the fat loss a bit. |

2bb... Glad to hear that most of the glass survived! What fun running the equipment! Meisha... Fortunately this hasn't developed into a foot "problem". Just sort of like sitting on your leg until it goes to sleep. This too shall pass. As for promotions etc... likelihood is that we will return to the US. Honestly, I'm a bit of a gypsy and the travel is fun for me. Living here really hasn't been though. Guess I'm just not a tropical gal. Ladies... I have to tell you. My elliptical machine has a setting called intervals. This is the most evil creature known to womankind!!! Fast as you can go... then slower.... then fast as you can go again! For an hour!!! OUCHY OUCHY OUCHY!! Hubby says it'll help charge up my fat burning though. He better be right!! Oh... BTW... if you've never had a persimmon, and you see one at the store, try it!! Yummy! |

Good grief!! I go to bed and this place goes nuts!! So much to catch up on! Boots... I'm curious why you've decided to walk/run for so long every day. I can tell you from experience, you may well burn yourself out that way. Maybe consider a shorter time and giving yourself at least one day off per week. Meisha... The shoes thing was considered, believe me. I bought new shoes just recently and it didn't solve the problem. The problem is, it's a cheapo elliptical and the pedals don't give. So, in half an hour or so I've run all the blood out of my feet. I have found ways around it though, so it will work until I replace the dratted machine. I'm also not cutting myself off from goodies completely, that WOULD be depressing. I'm just cutting them back down. 3 treats in a day isn't the best way to get your calories. A serving of brown rice with cinnamon and Splenda (which is yummy BTW) and a persimmon is much more filling than pudding. RG... So good to see you returning. Sounds like you're keeping yourself busy as usual! Its a gray Tuesday morning here. They are almost finished renovating my new office, I'll have a window!! I am feeling like I'm making a good start on getting this last weight off... still waiting for an approval on my surgery. Still waiting, also, for the word on hubby's promotion. The wait is killing me. Could someone send me some fall weather?? I really miss it!! |

Actually, I think I'm going to go with a calculation that I got from my BMR numbers. I found it somewhere this weekend and now I can't remember. My BMR runs about 1700. The calculation is that if you exercise moderately for at least 45 minutes per day, your calorie burn is BMR x 1.5. For me, that is 2550. That's probably pretty safe for me. As long as I stay below 2000 calories per day, that should give me a good deficit. Like I said, I think were my biggest bloopers have been lately has been in food. I got bored with my trail mix and applesauce snack, so I replaced it with regular pudding and a small bag of cookies. NOT comparable, even if the calories are nearly the same. Good food v. bad food. Plus much less protein and much less filling. I cooked a batch of brown rice yesterday and divided it. Will have that and a piece of fruit as a snack. Sometimes with cinnamon and sugar, sometimes with savory spices. 3 grams of protein as opposed to 1 or less. I know I shouldn't be so hard on myself, I've come a long way. But I want to get to my goal and I'm feeling less patient all the time!! |

Boots... You know, I find the whole heart rate thing confusing. Honestly, my elliptical and CC are within 50 points of each other almost every time. I don't understand how people get such differences in readings. Does your machine ask for weight or anything? What brand is it? I am REALLY interested in the "feet" thing, because mine just KILLS my feet! I "jog" about 5.5 mph. In an hour, I cover, according to the machine somewhere between 5.2 and 5.5 miles. This, according to the machine burns about 830 calories. CC gives me about the same number. I keep wondering if I should get a heartrate monitor, but when I get to the store and think about it, I can't justify the expense. M&M... I will always be happy to talk cake. I do try to restrain myself though, because it tends to disrupt some of my CC friends. I am planning a cake for this coming weekend. Halloween goodies for hubby's office. I love to bake, but honestly, don't really want to eat the stuff. Well, no golf for us this weekend. Funny thing... we loaded up the car, got on our golf duds and actually headed to the course. Then at the end of the street there was a man on his motorcycle. Hubby turned the car around and we went for a ride instead!! Honestly, I am not a golfer at heart. I am a biker! Maybe next weekend we'll hit the course. I really want to get to losing the last of this weight. I decided that I was using WAY too many unhealthy foods. Honestly, it doesn't matter if its only 100 calories of pudding... it's still not effective food. So, more alterations of diet and hitting the exercise hard. I want to see some movement by the end of October. My will power has been slipping a little lately. I'm ashamed!! |

Meisha... Glad to hear I don't have to make the call... AND that you didn't kill yourself at the gym. I guess I'm in a position where I can't do that to myself. Aerobics classes are out for me, along with running, treadmills, and sky diving. SO, I can't get myself into too much trouble. 2bb... Glad to hear you're sending to strength to KK. I know many of us are. I hope we hear how she is going soon. She really is a special member of our Gang. Boots... Can't wait to hear how you like your elliptical. Mine is, of course, driving me nuts, but I'm still glad to have it. |

2bb... Actually, we are hoping to return to the US. The job in Germany wouldn't be a step up for hubby, so the US would be better. We are actually hoping for some place with a law school nearby. I'm hemming and hawing a bit about law school, but I think I'd regret it if I didn't at least try. |

Tuning out the noise of my elliptical is actually easy. I watch TV while I work out. No cable in the exercise room, so I have bought DVD's of TV shows. Watching Magnum PI right now. That man was SUCH a hunk!!! I remember having crushes on him as a youngster... and I'm having another one now!! Heart goes pitter patter and I'm not sure if it's the exercise or the hunk!! HAHAHAHA!! It is Friday here again already!! I am just astounded how quickly time flies! We are now down to less than a month before hubby finds out about promotion. Are you all praying for us?? |

Meisha... That elliptical machine is the bane of my existence!!! Hate the darn thing! (I'd use more harsh language, but this is a nice group) I honestly don't think there is any way to fix it at this point. Oddly enough though... I'm starting to just blank out the noises and not notice them. So, I'll just take that. Eventually we'll leave this rainy place, and go back to the US, and I'll replace it then. Guam... well... hate Guam... but this is what I have for now!

Hmmm... I think I need a pedometer to see how many steps I put on just chasing people around in circles in my office. I do paralegal work for one who is what I call elusive. He wanders by and asks me for things... then disappears. I chase him all over. He's very hyperactive and hilarious to talk to sometimes. 2bb... I wonder sometimes, how long do you spend, putting on 10 miles? I mean, I'm spending an hour and only getting 5. Maybe it's just time limits with me. I just don't have time for more than that. The shopping frustrations continue. Just spent $20 to return all those jeans I ordered since NONE of them fit. Have others on the way from another store, different brand, maybe I'll have more luck. Ordered some cake decorating things 3 days ago, and they haven't shipped yet. What's the hold up? Would like them before Halloween! Just another day in "paradise" |

Meisha... Finger is poised over the phone just in case. I think that finding the balance is actually the key to all of this. 2bb... It is so nice to have you back. I miss all your smilies when you aren't here. The Hall is just so quiet without you. Well, my friends, I had my appointment with the doctor yesterday re: the breast reduction. Because it is military medicine, I now have to wait and see if they will authorize it. The doctor seemed to feel that I am a prime candidate because of my new found good health. Only thing is, there is no one here who does the surgery, so I would have to fly to Hawaii. Hmmm... 8 hour flight, then surgery... fun! |

M... Welcome to the group! We're a wild and crazy group, and very eclectic and always looking for new ideas! I used to live in South Dakota, where are you in Montana, if you're willing to share. Boots... Actually I am working now. I am a paralegal/billing for a law firm. When I say "next job" I'm speaking of what I'll look for when we leave here. I was lucky to find this job here, which they've "expanded" to fit my abilities. I want to get out of the accounting side of things next time though, now that I have my legal studies degree. 2bb... Honestly, the idea of surgery is not one of my favorite, but the pain level is becoming rather restrictive at this point, so I have to try something. I have been "suffering" with it for years, but with my new active lifestyle, it's time to deal with it. |

My goodness.... weekends are busy and slow here at the same time. Here it is Monday morning already! 4sq... Congrats on starting out well again. I'd love to see a loss like that these days, but don't. Di_p... Keeping fingers crossed for the 199. I'll tell you, I nearly cried the first time I saw it! Boots... Congrats on the excellent offer! I am almost looking forward to my next job hunt. I've finished my degree now, and I would like to think it'll help me hold more of the cards. Not much to report here. Rainy weekend kept us inside for the most part. I did get my Day 1 workout in yesterday. I have a hard time "inspiring" myself to work out on weekends, because it's not in my normal schedule. But I'm GOING to make this happen! Have an appointment tomorrow to talk to a doctor about getting a breast reduction/reconstruction. Finger crossed that maybe I can do something for my aching shoulders and back. |

Meisha... GOOD GOD WOMAN!!! Don't make me come over there!! HAHAHAH! You MUST stop competing with well scuplted blonds. Present company keeps me from calling them what I'd really like to. But in all seriousness, when you get lightheaded, it is time to STOP!!! No kidding around, that right there is a sign! You better be careful with yourself, you're part of the gang now! 2bb... Hope you had fun with the cherry picker! I've never run one, but I have ridden in them. Kinda scary from that side. Safina... I have a silver Ipod and I bought a very cool green aircraft aluminum case that it goes in. I LOVE my ipod. I even use it in my car, especially since the radio here is terrible! Boots... Hope the negotiations go well and you get what you're looking for. I would love to be in that position of holding the cards where a job is concerned. Seems like my history is more in the neighborhood of just taking what someone offers because that's the only job out there. As for my elliptical, don't worry about yours, I suspect it'll be fine. I think it was just this company. Honestly, military stores don't always sell the best quality. I know what I want to replace it with, but won't do it until we get back to the states. |

Some give the profession a black eye, but for each of those there is one who is a good soul. I'm just glad you're back with us. 4sq... So excellent to see you've returned. I pass by a 4square church every day on my way to work. I didn't notice it for the longest time, but then saw it there one day and now think of you each morning as I pass by. Green eyes... I hope your foot recovers soon! Boots.... Any new news on the job front??? Ladies... I am so aggravated with my elliptical machine right now I can't even speak! We spent $700 on it and more on the stupid "extended warranty". And in the end, what did we wind up with???? A loud, clunking piece of JUNK!!! I have just made the final call to the warranty company to be offered NOTHING. They say I can pay to ship it to the states for repair. Can you imagine how much that would cost????? SIGH! So, I guess I'll just continue to use it as is until we leave here, and then I'll invest in a good one. Professional model this time, no fooling around! |
