Fitness Half-Marathon Training - HELP Oct 01 2007

I have just done my first half marathon..

Have been running since last October...two weeks before the race I had a strctured training plan that involved timed runs each day i.e one day i was to run for 40 mins..next 50...rest...next day 40 mins..then 60..and I built up the time I ran for gradually over that period. Longest run I did in training was 1 hour 30.

Before that I was running about 25-30 miles a week.

Longest run I had done was just over 9 miles.

Race day and I came in at 2hours 16 mins. I managed to run the first 12 miles non stop but mile 13 had a nasty hill and I was forced to walk up that.

Hi cutecheeks...I weighed just over 300 pounds at my heaviest and know that the thing that really got me motivated to lose was the joint pain I was experiencing at the time. Also the physical side effects generally I was suffering from (sweating, chafing). I got so miserable I knew it was now or never. And you know I have not looked back since...2 and a bit years down the line and I am running a half marathon race today so that tells you how farI have come.

You can do this, I know the time needs to be right to do something about it but why not take this opportunity to start on that road to losing weight. Patience is a virtue but this time in 2 years you will look back and feel so overwhelmed that you made the decision. Just think about how amazing it will feel to succeed with it...

Good luck xx

Or it could be runners trots. Clearly you are not actually getting the 'trots' part ;) but sounds like you could be experiencing something a lot of runners get. I also suffer from cramping on some of my runs, although I never actually get the diarhhoea part. It might be something you have to get used to, I have yet to find a cause of anything that alleviates it whilst I am running.

Hey there, your progress is admirable and you are doing fantastically well so good on you :) I have been maintaining my weight for getting on a year now and I can remember being in your position and panicking when I thought about what happened after the weight loss. Maintenance has had its challenges and ups and downs but has worked for me...you sound determined. Tips from me would be to not completely deprive yourself of the foods you enjoy...I swear this has kept me on the straight and narrow as I have still been allowing myself those treats I loved when I was heavier so I have not been craving them. Make exercise part of your routine and you cannot go far wrong, exercise is the main reason I have lost as much weight as I have. Breakfast is SO important to set you up for the day. This is another thing that has helped me and eating little and often throughout the day has really worked.

I remember getting stuck in the same rut when I have lost weight before. I would have several days of healthy eating but then go and screw up mental attitude by bingeing. This was a vicious cycle that repeated itself many times before I saw the light and changed my ways and the way I did that was by allowing myself to still eat the foods I loved whilst losing the weight. This helped as complete depravation can only lead to disaster imo.

I am a recovering binger even now, and I have lost all my excess weight. At the height of my binges I was eating ridiculous amounts of food...happily I can now say that I could not even physically eat that much.

So let me think about a binge that stands out as being particularly awful. There was one day when I ate 3 sausage and egg mcmuffin meals (with has browns) then went and bought crisps (chips) chocolate bars, sweets and ate the lot. Who knows how manygrams of fat and calories I must have had that day. My binges usually included take away food at some point in m day...

Now I exercise loads but still find myself bingeing at times (probably oncea month or so) Now I binge on healthier foods but I can still eat a fair bit (perhaps 3000 cals). I like to say it is because my body is super efficient now and needs the extra cals but I know part of me is still that binge eater. Oh wait I remember now, at Christmas I ate a 1000 gram tin of Cadburys celebrations. Now we are talking a huge tin of small, wrapped chocolates. I demolished it in less than 24 hours.

Ooh this is a popular one with me...I have been doin the push ups for over 1 year and a bit now and my boobs are in great shape! In fact perkier than they have ever been. I used to have a HUGe chest when I was severely overweight but it has shrunk to a 34D (still big I know) but they look so different now I have tried to tone my muscle.
Motivation Question For Anyone Who Has Lost 100+ Pounds Aug 15 2007

hi Kerry, I lost 150 pounds through diet and exercise. My start weight was 301 pounds. I saw it this way...I had 2 choices at 301 pounds. I could either lose weight or keep getitng bigger and bigger. I was feeling unwell, lethargic, ugly, gross..all those horrible feelings I had felt for 5 years. My resolve did waver whilst I was losing the weight, as I expect it would with anyone with awhole person to lose off their body. I cut my portion sizes, reduced my fat and sugar intake andexercised like a demon. Walking helped me lose themajority of weight, I could not advocate it enough to anyone with weight to lose. My motivation was kept up by my reducing size, improving fitness, improving body image and mood generally. I call is self perpetuating!

I am nowthe fittest I have ever been in my life, my once high blood pressure is excellent and I weigh a healthy 150 pounds (I am 5'8")

Kerry stick with it, I know you have a long road to travel but you will build momentum and confidence as your weight reduces. WTG for losing what you have already.
Motivation Any funny moments because of your Weight Loss? Aug 10 2007

ok here is my funny story about being larger...sorry this is quite long but worth a read...top tip from me, be honest about your weight ;)

One of the funnier incidents I can remember occurred when we went on holiday to Lanzarote?I must have weighed about 250 pounds and had been conscious about my weight the whole time we had been there.  Of course I did not find this incident very funny at the time, it is so easy to look back and laugh at something when you are in a different frame of mind. Second to last day and we decide that we would pay the money and take an excursion to the Timanfaya National Park; an active volcanic area of the island. As part of our paid for tour package, we were given an all inclusive early morning camel ride; something many of the tourists do as a matter of course. I was really looking forward to it as it was something I had never tried before. I guess you don?t really consider the logistics of riding a camel beforehand, I certainly didn?t and it showed when we got there.

So we arrived at what can only be described as the camel parking area and waited patiently in line with the other tourists as the camels were prepared for take off. They are bemusing creatures that seem to display quite a stroppy attitude both to one another and their owners. Perhaps they get fed up with the constant stream of tourists that poke and prod them. They hiss and grunt, making a range of quite unique noises that all seem to be reminiscent of disgruntlement. Much to my horror our tour guide started to explain how we would need to sit on our assigned camel. Little did I know that camels have to have an even weight distribution around the hump otherwise it can throw their balance off. To carry the tourists, they have a double seat contraption that is placed between the humps. At the time I weighed a significant amount more than my man (probably in the region of 28 pounds) and he looked across at me, instinctively knowing that I was going to find this embarrassing. It wouldn?t have been so bad if we hadnot been climbing on the camels one couple at a time. The other tourists looked on with quiet bemusement and trepidation as they watched others mount the animals, perhaps searching for any tips they could adopt for when their turn finally came. Some stumbled a little, a few of the older ladies looked unsteady as they climbed on and there were a few stifled but jovial giggles eminated from the onlookers. The heavier person was supposed to sit on the right hand side whilst the lighter of the due took up residence on the left. Our fellow holidaymakers would have immediately seen that I was heavier when I climbed into the seat. So my man did the chivalrous thing and saved my blushes by letting me sit on the left hand side, where he should have been.  I guess we just hoped that the camel wouldn?t notice the weight distribution was completely off.

So off we set, me, the camel and my honey all trying to conduct a balancing act that was doomed to fail. The first 10 minutes were fine, I vainly tried to push my weight against the poor creature to alleviate some of the stress on its uneven load. I tried to look like I was having a good time but the fear must have been obvious from my nervous position and fake smile. All the camels were tied together and we had a couple of local men who were guiding and making sure that all was well. Soon enough the fun began, intiailly our camel started to lurch its head up and grunt a little. As his peers walked silently on, he started to become noisier. I would not have felt so certain it was my fault had the other camels being doing the same thing. The guide noticed and said a few words in Spanish, something probably along the lines of ?these damn overweight westerners should go on a diet!?. I thought that perhaps our camel was thirsty or was just hollering at his buddies that he was loving this particular ride. Sadly not it seemed as our travel companion then started to make quite dramatic jolting movements with its front legs and moaned some more. I was so embarrassed and could see the other holiday makers turning around to look at what was causing the commotion. I was like being part of some absurd circus balancing act, but we were not going to defeat the laws of gravity. This continued for the rest of the trip and I was absolutely relieved to get back to the parking area and disembark. If the camel could have understood me, I would have apologised profusely and explained my selfishness was due to my weight paranoia and saving face at the expense of his poor hump. Someone took a picture of us on the camel and my face says it all?get me off!

I am 5'8" and weight 150 pounds at the moment. I look good at this weight and exercise A LOT so think I have built up a fair bit of muscle. My weight does not seem to want to go below 148 pounds. I am a medium frame and my stats are 35-27-35 so I should be happy with how I am now

I lost 151 pounds and now weight 149 pounds (I am 5'8")~ inevitably I have excess skin around my tummy and a minimal amount of loose skin around tops of thighs and under arms (although this is improving the whole time) I lost 72 inches from my bod and now have 35 - 27 - 35 measurement. I expectedthe excess skin, that is a tremendous amount to lose. I would def have more had I not exercised my butt off for 2 years. thanks to that, I have saved certain areas from being much worse off had I just dieted. So I went to get a quote for a tummy tuck in London last week and was horrified at the price and theparticular medical establishment I went to. They were treating everyone like a commodity and a money making scheme. Disgusting so I have been put off for now. I am only 28 and have not had kids so maybe I will leave the op until I am a little olderand even more saggy in the stomach :)

I lost 150 pounds and do have excess skin on my tummy and I have also noticed it on my butt and thighs alittle bit. I have been maintaining my weight for around 10 months now and the sagginess has improved. It would be a lot worse had I not worked on my core muscles as much as I have.My abs are rock solid and have def helped with the top half of my stomach muscles. I am going to keep hoping that it will gradually tighten up but accept that my dramatic weightloss will probably require some sort of surgery for my poor tummy to look normal again. I  5'8" tall, 28 and now weigh around the 150 mark.

I am 5'8 and weigh around the 150 mark. I am maintaining my weight atm and that usually means I can have around 2100 cals. If I want to lose then I can lower this to around 1600 mark. I exercise most days of the week.

Hey there, congrats on getting into Oxford. My brother went there and I love the city. I am a Brit and there are plenty of overweight people here...obesity is becoming a real issue in the UK with 1 in 4 people being overweight. Don't worry at all..people are great here, you get the odd one who will be rude or make remarks but I guess that could happen anywhere, no matter where you are in the world!

our portions vary in size, depending on where you choose to eat. From my experience of being in the US, generally our portions are smaller but it depends where you go to eat. We have lots of takeaway places; Chinese, Indian, Kebab, fish and chips and Oxford has its fair share. But you also have some excellent local food, usually served in pubs (I have been in some pubs that give large portion sizes) Our supermarkets usually have quite a good range of fruit and veg, dependent on the time of year and there are quite a few healthy options available.

Please don't worry about any of this and enjoy your trip, ~I hope you fall in love with our precious little Island :)

Hi there Katy,

It took me about 5 months to start seeing results but they are dramatic ..(that is 7500 push ups over that period :) ) I started doing 25  a night and then increased it to 50..so do stick with it! I do not do full push ups..can only manage a couple of those still. I make sure I assume the correct posture for the half push up (I took kick boxing for a while so my instructor made sure I was doing them right) If you are doing them right, you should really feel it! But I cannot recommend them enough. They also tone up your shoulders and arms so an added bonus!

Look foward to seeing how you all get on...

Pixieninja, WTG so far...you really sound like you have taken the bull by the horns and dedicated yourself to this. Reading your post has reminded me of a couple more things I have found have helped..

Takeaways-  you can still enjoy them and still lose weight...just make sure you share your food with someone else! Honestly, this is really good little tip as you can still enjoy your fave takeaway foods but not go overboard if the plate does not belong to you in the first place. hee hee :)

Agreed Pixie, breakfast is sooo important. It keeps me going now and I cannot imagine not having it! I never used to eat brekkie but look forward to it each morning now.
