After a day that included lots of exercise and nutritious eating, I just ate a ton of strawberry ice cream, a huge brownie and 2 sugar cookies. Big ones. I think it's the onset of Fall. All I want to do is eat high fat high sugar. Ugh! I go through PHASES of this. I have no advice, but I've been telling myself that I'm not a bad person. I brushed my teeth when I wanted to go back to the freezer for more ice cream! I brushed them really thoroughly, too, with flossing and everything. I think that's the end of my junk food blitzkrieg! For tonight, anyway...

I can't go without my healthy carbs, that's for sure!
Try doing pasta primavera, with tons of veggies, and only a half cup of that whole wheat pasta, so it's mostly vegetables, but you're getting those carbs in. Brown rice is also good. I just got my Oprah magazine, and it has lots of recipes with whole grains. Check it out! Also, maybe if you're hungry, you're not eating enough calories? |

akmom: I just posted about this same kind of thing under "maintaining". Some days it's so hard to not try to ease that pain with food, isn't it? Some people drink to take the edge off, or take prozac. Some eat. It never makes us feel better in the long run, but at the time it is so wonderful (at least for me!) I'm in a cold climate, too. And icy and snowy. I'm drinking lots of tea these days. Last night, I recognized: "I just want to EAT. I am not hungry. I just want to eat." So, rather than suffer, I filled up a huge bowl with romaine lettuce and some fat free dressing. That way, I could eat without feeling bad about my behaviour. I recognize it's not the BEST way to deal with it, but it's better than a cookie binge!! Hang in there! Spring will be here, and you can get out and walk again without slipping on the ice!! |

| I work long days. I spend a few hours on Sunday preparing for the week. I cook a half dozen hard-boiled eggs and a half dozen chicken breasts. I cut fresh veggies and put them in separate serving tupperwares. I cook a bean or lentil dish that can be served heated or cold. I alternate eating the chicken or beans for lunch or dinner. I make a gallon of iced tea. I have a great little insulated lunch sack that carries all my one-portion tupperwares. It takes a lot of planning, but I have lost 30 pounds since joining this site, am maintaining with a healthy bmi, and it works to eat this way!! (Notice the chocolate indulgence...I can't live without it!)
Lunch One Two hard-boiled egg whites 2-3 cups mixed veggie slices (sweet peppers, grean beans, asparagus) 1 tbsp vinagrette for dipping 1 cup kashi go lean crunch 1 cup fat free yogurt banana 1 cup blueberries 1 square Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate Bar Iced Green Tea Lunch Two 1/2 chicken breast, broiled with hotsauce 1 tbsp fat free ranch dressing 1 cup steamed brocolli 2 cups spinach orange apple 1 cup fat free yogurt Nutz Over Chocolate Luna Bar Iced Green Tea Lunch Three .5 cup curried lentils .5 cup brown rice 5 cups garlic sauteed spinach (measured before cooking) 1 cup fat free yogurt banana 1 cup blueberries orange 1 cup cucumber slices 1 square Hershey's special dark chocolate bar Iced Green Tea |

| It's also helpful to focus on what your body can DO, as opposed to what it LOOKS LIKE. How many flights of stairs can you run up? How much can you lift? Feeling STRONG feels GREAT. | |||
| Weight Loss | Some people are so RUDE! | Aug 12 2007 17:27 (UTC) |

| Sometimes people think they're paying you a compliment. Others say stuff like that out of insecurity. I've done both in varying degrees in my imperfect life! I think a great way to deal with these comments is not to be snarky, but honest. If you express yourself from a place of need, friends and colleagues might actually hear your problem. Try this: "Gosh, I have been working hard to get down to a healthy weight, and I am proud of what I have accomplished. It hurts my feelings when you say I look sick. Do you really mean that? I don't feel sick. I feel great. I'd love to hear you say I look great, too!" |

| Here's a tactic if you don't want to answer questions:
Take the cupcake/chicken nugget/heart attack special, then "suddenly remember" something, cruise away and either place it back on the tray, or toss it. I do this with my family, who would give me a VERY hard time if I told them I was counting calories. It's somewhat dishonest, but hassle-free. |

| Weight Loss | Weight Fluctuation! Ahhhhh! | Jul 04 2007 19:44 (UTC) |

| I have a 5 pound fluctuation, and it's taken some tracking to realize that this is just how I am. (I'm at maintenance currently, having lost 25-ish pounds.)
What I did to boost my confidence was keep an old pair of pants next to the scale. If the scale gave me a higher number than the day before, I'd put the pants on, and breathe a sigh of relief. As long as those pants remained too big for me, I was okay! |

| At restaurants, I get a "to go" container right away and put half of everything in to it, bag it, and put it under my chair. If possible, I move the half I'm eating on to my bread plate, so it looks like a TON of food. I drink LOTS of water at restaurants, too, and herbal tea. If I want dessert, I order super lean entrees that have a bunch of veggies and no cheese or bread. It's especially great if everyone else at the table favors a healthy lifestyle! (That's the tough one, isn't it?) | |||

| Try this:
Baste a half chicken breast in egg white, coat with seasoned corn flake crumbs. Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes on foil-lined baking sheet. Not KFC, but might curb your craving! It's only around 200 cals! |

| Try posting a note in the pantry that says: "Do 20 jumping jacks, Sexy!" I have replaced "boredom snacking" with "boredom exercise". When I have the urge to snack and am not hungry, I do some crunches or push ups or run in place for 5 minutes.
Try it! It works! |

| I have learned to eat a BIG breakfast. This helps me so much for the rest of the day. If you're not hungry til work, pack yourself a breakfast. When I include eggs or yogurt, whole grains, vegetables and fruit in my breakfast, it carries me for a long time. (ie egg whites with veggies and oatmeal with fruit). It may seems scary to eat a 600-700 calorie breakfast, but I overeat the least after doing so. It might work for you, too! | |||
| Weight Loss | how much cal have you lost in past 4 month? | May 06 2007 15:31 (UTC) |

| My first 4 months I lost 20 pounds. In the last 3 months I lost 7 pounds. I reached my goal weight last month, and have been maintaining with a differencial of 3 pounds since then. Slow and steady loss stays off. "Get thin quick" loss comes right back. I find the whole "lifestyle change" philosophy to be inspiring. What I feel great about is that my food choices have gotten 100 times more beneficial and my cravings have changed from wanting junk food to wanting real food. I eat ice cream every day, too, by the way. I just don't eat the whole pint any more and bulk up my little scoop with cereal and fruit. I also love and crave exercise, which makes me thrilled! Don't be discouraged! And I suggest including lifestyle change as part of your goal, not just weight loss. Keep up the good work! | |||
| Recipes | Delicious Whole Wheat Pancakes | Apr 27 2007 21:29 (UTC) |

| It makes 12 pancakes. One pancake, a quarter cup of batter, is about 110 calories, I believe. (I just added up the calories of the ingredients, measured the batter, which totals 3 cups, and divided it by 12. I know it's not totally accurate, but I think it's a good estimate.)
And I vote for applesauce instead of eggs for vegan. That's what I make muffins with for my vegan friends. Remember, the 110 is WITHOUT any bananas or blueberries or nuts or syrup or yogurt. |

| I've lived less than a mile from a Whole Foods for 10 years...IT IS GREAT!
My advice: Have fun. The produce is beautiful. The house brands are excellent. Don't be cheap, either. Spend your money on delicious things that will keep you HEALTHY. The deli case is also excellent. And you can get nutritional info for the premade dishes. Do it up! Have a blast! Get some Stonyfield Farm After Dark Frozen Yogurt. It is awesome! |

| A friend told me when I started moving toward a healthier lifestyle: "Don't be a food snob. You won't be any fun at parties." I think it's good advice. I HAVE become a food snob, but I'm not interested in making everyone else uncomfortable because of it. I've started bringing food I've made (enough for everyone) to various social/work events. I try not to make a big deal out of it. Just put out the low calorie brownies and veggies and hummus and whatever else. I get to eat what I want to, and share with my friends and co-workers. Good for everyone! | |||

SO TRUE! SO HARD! Hobbies with commitments, my friend. I've got a ton of them. I volunteer to sew and cook for various organizations. (Something I learned from my mom!) Volunteers are needed everywhere, I've found. The more stuff I get involved in, the less I eat! (And when I make cookies for the local drama club, I reward myself by leaving one at home for after I drop them off!) It keeps you out of the house, too, and away from the fridge! Good luck! |

| You sound like you have a super hero body! I am JEALOUS. Most ladies I know (including myself) have the opposite problem (tiny top, big bottom). You might want to try buying a skirt and top combo instead of a dress, if you haven't the money to get a custom outfit. For your figure, a skirt that is slim at the top and flares at the bottom with a fitted tux-style jacket might just look smashing.
Best of luck, Supergirl! |
