Weight Loss DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Warning: Rant Nov 19 2009

while I agree with the general message you're trying to put across, I wouldn't recommend talking to a family doctor for weight-loss advice ]: no offense, but I've gotten the poorest advice from pediatricians and family doctors.. and even some shady advice from a nutritionist. A dietician is the way to go. (;

Weight Loss Prenatal Vitamins? Oct 28 2009

I take prenatal vitamins.. not because I'm trying to get pregnant, but because of the fabulous effects they have on your hair, nails, and skin! Personally, I haven't noticed a weight gain at all, and they haven't had any adverse effects on me.

The Lounge Is monogamy realistic? Oct 28 2009

In the primitive, visceral sense, maybe monogamy isn't realistic--a man is inclined to reproduce and spread his seed everywhere possible, right? Even today, most spouses forgive one another for cheating that only involves physical attachment, not emotional. When my bf cheated on me a year ago, I found myself continuously asking him for reassurance, "but did you like her?!?" As long as the answer was no, I found his behavior excusable. We are only human, after all, and I can't say I've never had the urge to, idk, make out with someone esle lol. But as far as we evolved, I believe it's entirely possible to only be mentally close to one person. Perhaps love is a manmade sensation, but I'm pretty convinced it's real. But maybe that's just me.

soooo off the topic of das... !

The same thing is happening to me, actually. /: I've only increased to 1600 but I'm up 6 pounds. I'm sure most of that is just a water weight fluctuation, but I'm so afraid of seeing "140" that I pretty much freak out when my weight goes up [before, I was about 133]. I'm interested that you lost 2 pounds! Keep me updated on that :p I, too, want to lose weight the healthy way, but having recovered from an eating disorder it's hard to use this widely accepted method of weightloss when I know there's a foolproof [yet unhealthy] one out there. Getting your thyroid checked is a good idea. It might even be for me.. my mom has a thyroid issue, so I'm wondering if some has been passed on to me.. ah! I'm sorry we're so confused ><

Weight Loss 10-20 pound support group?!? Oct 21 2009

hmm, I was considering joining this group, and I don't mean to judge but I'm a little concerned.. it looks like most of you are eating 1200-1400 calories and burning 400-500 off. you realize that puts you under 1200, right? it's advisable not to go so low, due to its effects on energy level and metabolism. meh, just an observation.

Wrong, those are not necessities.  A necessity is something you will die without.  There are plenty of people in developed nations that get by without money or an education.  However, this is besides the point.

I realize you both missed the point.  I chose to work 8-10 hours/wk because I had to make cuts to things like sleep when I was working 20+ last year.  You always have choices, you can take out a loan.  You can use any scrap of free time you have.  You can cut sleep.  Carpool, public transportation.  Etc...
There is a lot of stuff you could do, but you won't.  So, you do have a choice.

well sleep meets the definition of a "necessity".
and I DO use public transportation.
whatever dude, you're getting by on technicalities here, and it's really, frankly, annoying.

I wish I coulda seen this when I was 11.. I was 100 pounds at 5'3", and for some reason thought I was too fat. 3 years later I was 10 pounds overweight, and 2 years after that, I was battling anorexia. /: This information could certainly be powerful!

aah! glad to see we're on the same page sleepless :p

I realized I never got around to answering your question! in short, no, your metabolism isn't screwed over--it's something that can be easily repaired no matter how screwed you think it really is! haha. but to answer your questions about calorie intake.. I don't know, because I'm sort of facing the same dilemma /: I was eating 1800 and maintaining, then [unintentionally] eating 1400 and still maintaining. what I can tell you, though, is that during anorexia recovery, I gained 35 pounds from eating only 1600 calories, which should NOT have happened. I'd say eating more is your best bet! I'm gonna try it too.. I'm about as active as you are, with walking from class to class and standing at work. I'm nervous, but I'm tired of being stuck here!

I'd love to exercise more, I really would, but I just don't have the time much anymore.

That's your decision, make time.

Um, no. Some people--especially, as far as I know, college students--just DON'T have the time. Right now I'm taking a 5-minute study break. Then it's back to studying and homework until like 11pm, and then school and work until next weekend.

Yes, it's your decision.  You put yourself in that situation.

I'm a full time math major and I work a part time job 8-10hours/week.  I make time.

If you work 20 or 40hrs a week, then again, that was your decision.  You make choices, deal with the consequences, and quit trying to shoulder off responsibility by implying "I had NO choice".

oh, believe me, it's NOT my choice.
i HAVE no choice.
i need money, and an education.
it's a necessity. and those come before physical fitness.

Weight Loss Looking to lose weight after a year of recovery! but.. Oct 18 2009
05:51 (UTC)

thanks for the reply! that's kind of what I was planning on doing--putting myself through a "metabolism rehab", so to speak. but how long would I go about doing that? and what would I decrease to? obviously, 1300 is too low.. how about 1500? or 1700? I apologize, I'm new at this.. I've never lost weight healthily before! /:

I haven't tried it, but I did hear Alice Cooper complaining about the Phoenix news trotting that same old story out again (apparently they do it every year when the temperature gets around 120). I can say for certain that you can give yourself some seriously sore feet by walking barefoot on asphalt in July in Arizona! I've also heard stories about playgrounds with black rubber floors giving some toddler second-degree burns.

yep yep. I live in Tucson, which is even drier than Phoenix. The first time we tried to fry an egg on concrete, my dog ate it [lol] but we tried it again this year, and it worked, albeit very slowly! It took a few hours before the egg was decently cooked. My mom makes sun tea, though, by leaving some teabags inside a jug of water out in the front yard for about 2 hours or so (:

Of course luv! That's a valid worry. Based on personal experiences, I can tell you that doesn't have to happen! I too was around 145-150 pre-ED, but as long as you follow your recovery plan and don't fall back into old ways [that is, eating at an ED level OR eating as much as you did when you were 145.. assuming you ate unhealthily, because I certainly did lol] your body should settle nicely on a healthy weight. So no, you're not necessarily going to have to get those jeans out again :p

Aside from drinking too much [which I don't do! lol] I hate that I never have time to eat! Even if I were the kinda girl who'd settle for a basket of fries instead of something healthier, I don't even have time for that.. Besides weekends, I'm always either in class, at work, or studying! I get outta class at 2 and work at 330, so I have a little bit of time to grab something to eat, but I usually never have time to finish /: I get off work at 9 and by then all I wanna do is go home and sleep even though I'm starving.. aahh! So my eating schedule's all screwed up. Even so, I feel like most of my paycheck goes to food! boo. I also never have time to work out, but running to and from classes and work kinda takes care of that I think :p

My lowest weight was.... very low. Haha! Now I'm around 128 pounds and a size 1-3 in [juniors'] jeans. For the most part, I'm happy with the way I look, aside from a little extra tummy jiggle that doesn't worry me much. 115 may be low for some, but I think it depends on your frame size.. It's a healthy weight, but at 115 I still looked reallyyy unhealthily skeeeny [mostly 'cause all the weight was in my ass and my arms were still skeletal lmao]. I wouldn't recommend going under 110!

Weight Gain Reduction in / loss of ED side effects Oct 10 2009
19:42 (UTC)

For me, it was virtually immediate. On days I would eat more or enough, I found I had tons more energy and was in an infinitely better mood [I was totally bitchy during the low points of my ED!]. I was also able to concentrate better and retain more information [previously, I'd either be unable to focus during my last class, which was math, or fall asleep during it]. Some changes happened gradually though--My skin began to feel smoother, my face regained its rosiness, and my hair grew like 3 inches per month for a few months after recovery. Some side effects have unfortunately stayed with me, like sensitivity to cold and dizziness upon sitting/standing up.. Actually, that's kind of always been an issue for me, but it got more severe during my ED and remained that way after recovery. All in all, I felt a million times better (:

Weight Loss Working + School!.. Should I log it? Oct 05 2009
16:30 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. Like I said before, though, I think I was pretty much sedentary in high school BESIDES my regular workouts [which I logged individually]--I seriously walked for like 15-20 minutes a day and did nothing else on days I didn't work out! I'm aware that they are calculators. Actually, the one you referenced there tells me I should be eating 1740 calories when sedentary--right around where I was before! My question was more along the lines of whether my lifestyle can be considered "light" or not, because I don't know if standing for 5 hours could be considered "exercise".

Health & Support Eating disorders related to molestation? Oct 05 2009
01:43 (UTC)

Personally, my ED didn't stem from molestation or sexual abuse, though I've heard of and read about ED cases that have. An interesting statistic, according to a book called Father Hunger, is that a great number of ED cases have stemmed from poor father-child relationships. Okay, that's not exactly a statistic, but perhaps you'd be able to find it somewhere online :p I fully understand the need to get to the root of your ED, and I think that's one thing I had to do in order to fully recover.

Pointing out the obvious: 1300 calories - about 200 [right?] burned on treadmill = 1100.. possibly starvation mode? Maybe you could try zig-zagging you calories or increasing them for a few days and seeing where that takes you, or increasing exercise WHILE increasing your calorie intake. Good luck!

Archaeological digs don't actually support the theory that humans ate any significant amount of fruits or veg except on an opportunistic basis.

Probably because tomatoes don't leave lasting evidence the way animal bones do.  Have you ever read The Invisible Sex by J.M. Adovasio, O. Soffer and J. Page?  It provides a very interesting discussion of how the role of meat in ancient civilizations may well be highly exaggerated due to the gender bias of those doing the research (i.e. men feeling that the male hunting role is more important than the female gathering role) and that introduction of nuts/seeds into the diet can explain all the development traditionally attributed to "big man bring back big meat".  People have a funny tendency to find what they're looking for, and traditional archaeology has tended to focus on the male side of things - overemphasizing the role that hunting and meat actually played in cultures.

The bolded part made me laugh hahah :p

other than that, I wouldn't doubt it.

that's the best explanation I've heard on this subject yet.
