| You probably don't want to gain pounds of fat right? So if I were you, i would incorporate lots of protein into your daily diet, along with an increase of calories. For example, if you already eat say, 2,500 cals a day or whatever, then eat an extra protein shake and some more cheese, nuts, eggs, and lean meats - bring your cal intake up and hit the weights or do something active that challenges your muscles, not just makes you sweat.
Work them and they'll start to grow if given the right fuel (protein and carbs) Good luck!!! |

i wanted to tell you that i looked up your stats and if you were only 125 at your height, 5'9" - you would have a BMI of 18.5 putting you in an underweight categorie. Right now at your current weight you are 20.5 bmi, which is healthy and on the lower side of the scale. you're very young even for a young dieter's group - you're not even overweight to begin with. i'm not trying to bash you, but i'm just wondering, are your goals unrealistic or is it just that you want to tone up? myself I am in the same boat but I definitely dont' think i'm overweight, i just want to lose a little chub and replace it with lean muscle -(i'm 5'1 and 118 lbs, a 22.5 BMI) |

| From what I have learned over the years about exercise is that cardio is what burns up calories and stored fat; weight lifting and resistance training is what bulks up the muscles. However, you need to be taking in alot of protein, and be working your muscles to fatigue if you expect to see alot of muscle growth. Other than that, a little resistance training without weights, such as crunches, pilates, yoga - will not bulk you up - it will totally lean you out and make you feel toned and tight. (underneath the fat of course.) Don't be afraid to replace a little bit of your fat for muscle because the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn throughout the day and during workouts. No one wants to be a skinny fat person!! (except some runway models) |

| Motivation | how does building lean muscle and weight loss really work? | Mar 10 2007 00:07 (UTC) |

| A pound of muscle will burn way more calories than a pound of fat does.
I have gained a few pounds recently, which sucks because I am trying to fit back into some old pants (not even that old, like, just 3 months old) - but I have been using this stepping machine and the front of my theighs feels like steel. I think I may have gained some muscle. Still, my pants are not quite fitting the way they should. However, since the scale is not going down, I am going to save my sanity by assuming I have gained muscle. |

I loved peanut butter and coulnd't get enough of it. I would eat pancakes with peanut butter and jam on them. as for crazy cravings like pickles and ice cream, that never hit me. Mostly I just wanted canned beans, and pancakes (NOT on the same plate lol) |

| Fitness | How do you get a firmer butt? | Mar 08 2007 20:05 (UTC) |
6 |
| I do a "Butt-Routine". I used to be thin but had no bootay. So I started reading Oxygen magazine and in an issue about 2 years ago they had this total butt workout. The whole thing takes about 10 minutes and it really works your upper back theighs, and your butt! There's six moves. There they are in order the best I can describe them: 1) stand bent at waist, so your torso is parallel to floor, leaning on a dresser or chair; lift one leg at a time from the ground until it's in line with your back, parallel to the floor. Repeat 40 times per leg, careful not to use momentum of course, and only your butt muscles. 2) get down on all fours, but place one knee on a pillow. with your other leg keeping bent at 90 degrees, raise it into the air until the back of your theigh is in line with your back. repeat 40 times per leg. 3) do what lura1 said - on your back on the floor, knees bent, arms flat at your side, but instead of keeping feet on floor, put your heels on a table or bedside. lift your hips high into the air; this is by far the most effective glute move I have ever tried. repeat 40 times. 4) stand with your legs apart, just a little further than your shoulders. placing hands on hips, squat down, careful to use your butt muscles, keeping your knees pointing off to the side, not directly in front of you. repeat 40 times. 5) lay on your tummy, arms in front of you under your chin or on floor. keeping legs straight, lift one leg at a time off the floor as high as you can. repeat 40 times per leg. 6) standing straight up, hold onto something at hips height for support. bend the knee of one leg and push back, careful to use your butt muscles. it's as if you are pushing back on a door behind you to shut it. repeat 40 times. I did this every day for a month and it was like magic. suddenly baby got back. hope you all understand my instructions. if anyone wants pictures, please write and let me know and i will take a couple of myself in these poses. |

| 3 months till you're out for summer? wow - that means 3 months till it's about time for me to bare all in a bikini again.
Last year was a good year for that; I looked hot! But I've gained my winter weight and now I'm on this new pill that may or may not be aiding my weight gain. So anyhow... I would like to get my bikini body back. How about a challenge that has to do with bikini bodies? I'm going to challenge myself right here right now to stop eating like a bear about to go into hybernation, and to drop these fat lbs!! |

| Yeah it's a horrible feeling when your child is sick and you're worried about them, or if something comes up quickly and unexpectedly that puts them at great discomfort and even danger.
My daughter had a temp of 104 when she was just over a year old. She had to stay overnight in the hospital for observation and to get chest x-rays. I don't know if you've ever seen how they give an infant chest x-rays but it is not nice. In fact, making them sit there so uncomfortably, squished in and held up by metal and plastic, arms in the air, wailing and crying, looking right into your eyes as if to say, "Mommy!! Why are you letting them put me here? Please come take me out, hold me!" That is the worst feeling in the world. And you know the more they cry the higher their temp rises. Ugh. I feel for you. |

| Well, imagine being an inch shorter than you are now, and weighing 135. That was my heaviest, and on small framed and short girls like us, the weight shows! It doesnt sound like much to most other people; but most other people are not 5'1 or 5'2.
The leanest I have ever been (leanest not skinniest), was 103 lbs. I was toned, had a low body fat percentage, healthy, and my clothes fit great! I felt awesome. Well, along came winter and now I'm a wonderful 114 lbs lol. Why don't we do this together? I feel depressed too sometimes about my weight but you know what? You can't find the strength to tone up and lose fat if you feel worthless to begin with. You've gotta love yourself and think you're beautiful at any weight. Your pant size may go up or down but your smile and eyes will always be the same. When you feel worthless, you decide you don't need to dress up for school or work; you decide you don't need to give yourself the time of day anymore; shaving legs, doing hair or make up... you end up turning yourself into the person you feel like instead of the person you are. Confidence is the most attractive quality in a person. So if I were you, I'd pick my attitude up off the floor, put on a nice outfit, do your hair all pretty and work your stuff!! Your man will adore how cute and fab you look, and you'll attract others' attention, including your own. Give it to yourself. :) |

| Weight Loss | What works for me. What works for you? | Mar 07 2007 20:36 (UTC) |

| I choose not to weigh myself every day because it can get discouraging when you try so hard and you feel like you must be dropping tons, then you step on and you're the same or more as the day before.
I go by how my clothes fit. Right now, I follow almost everything your list says except I eat fewer calories (try to) and probably don't get as much fiber as I should, but still always at least 15 g. A pair of my dress pants appears to be getting just a little bit looser. That is a good sign for me. And when you get your clothes out of the dryer and you try them on, they're always a little snug, but if you put them on and they still feel comfy, you're at least not gaining. :) |

| Motivation | The Biggest Loser (Spring) | Mar 07 2007 20:26 (UTC) |
|
| No, it's not hard for me to see that because once you kick your body into high gear, and your metabolism just totally kickstarts, the weight falls off.
Those people went from totally unhealthy lifestyles to mega-high-powered go-getter lives; it's no wonder the body reacts the way it does!! Blast the fat baby! the biggest challenge I think is for us normal people who aren't on a show... we have nothing holding ourselves accountable but ourselves and it's much easier to slip up. temptations, excuses... the whole 9. I would find it hard to imagine someone I know personally losing that much unless they totally changed their lives. |

I have gained at least ten lbs every winter for the last few years. I'm 114 right now, hope to be back to 106 soon! (5'1) Yay for spring! I already feel motivated; today was our first above freezing temps for a long time and the snow is melting:) |

| I am one inch shorter than you, and just 9 lbs lighter.
If you are "fat" than so am I, and I know that being 5'2 and 125 is not fat. You may not be super lean, and your clothes may be fitting tighter or not at all, but that certainly doesn't make you worthless. I think you have more of a self-image problem than a weight problem. If you would like to chat, write back and let me know and I can give you my email address. I've been where you are. try to keep your chin up |

| If this is just your second week of counting your calories, try to take it easy. It can be a huge shock to your body to suddenly drastically reduce calories, from what used to be your normal yet high amounts of calories, to your basic metabolic amount.
I would just try not to obsess over it too much - take baby steps. Start by having one or two hundred fewer today than what you used to, or replacing a favorite snack food for something much lighter. Then once you feel like you're not overwhelmed anymore, start planning your meals and counting out your calories every day. baby steps! good luck! |

| i agree - when you're home all day, you probably do what I do which is relax, plan meals, probably get a little pilates or other work out in there.
when you'er at school or work all day, you still get a chance to eat but it's not as structured, and you also feel stress or pressure sometimes, causing you to make poor snack choices, or to munch while you study (like me). when i was in university last year, I had three night classes and one day class. during the day i managed to bring something healthy for breakfast, and usually a timmy's coffee. but at night, the vending machine was my best friend, especially considering there were only two other people in my Satellite class with me - i didn't feel so bad about overeating because there were fewer people around to witness it. |

| Alacrita, I am in the exact same shoes as you - from the past anorexia and bulimia, to full fledged binge eating disorder.
I'm trying to start a new leaf this weekend. For me weekends are the best because I don't have to get dressed up or even leave the house if I don't want - I can just chill, sleep as much as I need to to avoid eating too much, and try to get in as much exercise and healthy foods as I can. Why don't we try to make this Saturday and Sunday a good weekend? I know it's hard to resist the binges sometimes, but we really will feel better on monday if we don't. oh, and I too have only 10 lbs to lose. I'm 114 and want to get back down to my 104, or at least below 110 lbs. :) keep up the effort |

| Foods | Negative Food Calories - something worth eating | Mar 03 2007 05:05 (UTC) |
2 |
| Okay well it doesn't mean it's pish posh - i mean seriously, out of all the foods you eat, it's probably going to be the overall least absorbed calories in these so called "negative calorie" foods. Your body after all does burn a certain amount of calories every day if you just laid in bed (BMR) - that includes the calories needed to work the internal organs. So if the stomach and intestines and whatnot are burning calories all the time anyways, it makes sense that a formula such as: food in - calories burned = net overall calorie intake could make sense. I like it! I'm gonna start trying to eat more of these foods (eventhough so many are bland without dip and such) |

| Foods | chili | Mar 01 2007 23:01 (UTC) |

| Some of it can be; but some are lower in fat. Chilli is high in fiber and very nutritious, but as dolceamera pointed out, the sodium is extreme. You would be wise to read the label - look at 5 things - fat, calories, protein, fiber, and sodium. Read all labels on anything especially canned before you buy them. I know there are some brands of chili that are very low in fat; you have to hunt around. Making your own chilli at home is a great way to meet all your nutrition needs. I boil 1 lb extra lean ground beef, then drain. (Boiling gets rid of more fat than frying does). I then add canned tomatoes and beans of all sorts, looking for lower sodium selections, and add chopped onion, green pepper, and whole mushrooms. Add some pepper, garlic powder, chilli powder, and a touch of oregano, and you have yourself a heart happy (and waist happy) meal. Only - watch the beans - they are although VERY good for you, also very high in cals. Replace some of the beans with more fresh veggies if you're worried about cals - it all works out and tastes great! |

| I don't think that I'm doing more since joining - besides logging my weight more.
I've always watched my weight but I've never actually kept track of the pounds gained or lost, on paper. And honestly I wish I hadn't started because the scale can be depressing. However, I do enjoy having a group of other people with similar interests and goals to myself. Calorie count has definitely been a valuable tool. |

| Yeah K8iemay that is the hardest for me too. Relatives planning a dinner that you know is calorie dense and full of fat. It can be hard to eat just one serving without binging, or without the urge to purge.
I used to tell myself I would be okay with just one plate, a little bit of meat, lots of veggies. But inevitably I would end up eating way more than I needed, sometimes more than everyone else at the table. And then swing by the local store on the way home for some laxatives.. knowing full well they wouldn't prevent weight gain. Luckily I have come to my senses about using laxatives. I don't purge, I just try to get back on the band wagon every new day like today. Yesterday I at only 860 cals until about 7:30 PM - doing great, i would say. Then my hunny brought me home pizza. I ended up having another 1,400 calories within just a couple hours. I know how you feel. Hopefully today is better for you. Stay strong; a little of your mom's supper will be nourishing for you! |

| No of course no one minds if you write every day!
I used to be bulimic but I abused laxatives. Now I am not purging but still battle binges quite often (every day pretty much). And I binged again tonight. I want you to know that you're definitely not the only person going through a rough time with an eating disorder. Have you tried talking to a counsellor? I would love to go see one but the ironic thing is that I am beginning my practicum next month at Mental Health as a medical assistant. I'm not sure what kind of confidentiallity that breaches. lol but anyways, not a laughing matter. stay strong; i'm battling with you. |

| Weight Loss | trying to up my calories | Feb 26 2007 05:45 (UTC) |
10 |
| First question: how long have you been only eating this many calories per day? Your body needs much more than that just to function properly. And by function properly, I do not mean eat every single food on the chart of food groups - that would be way too many cals obviously.
Secondly: How old are you and how much do you know about food and the way the body works? If you are arguing that everyone should not be telling you to increase your calorie intake, then you may have an eating disorder. Thirdly: Anorexic people lose weight and destroy their bodies. When they begin to eat healthfully they gain back, because their bodies were starving and are desperately trying to store some fat. It is called being in "starvation mode". Your body is probably eating up all it's muscle to use as energy, and if you do gain any weight it will be in the form of fat because your body will be storing it any chance it gets. You definitely need to increase your calorie intake by about 2.5X. (no less than 1,200 a day). I am 5'1, and used to be 132 at my heaviest. I know how you feel and I know that even though it doens't sound like much to other people, that's a lot of weight for a short girl like us. But you know what I did to lose weight? I got a job in town and had to walk there and back every day, and it was housekeeping - lots of physical work. I ate lunch and supper and was so tired at night that I would rather sleep than munch on food and watch TV. I lost 15 lbs in just 1 month. It is possible, but I wasn't even thinking about it. It's when you consistently thinking about food that you mess up because it is always on your mind. If you ever want to talk, please email me - I'll help you through. cody_littlebean@hotmail.com |
