The Lounge Anorexic teen girls among us Mar 09 2008

I read up on Anorexia Nervosa for a project on teenage girls in my art class.

The thing about attention is very true but with many cases it is not just any old attention seeking.

Many do not want to be "special" - they want to be heard. Eating disorders can stem from mental, sexual or physical abuse and sometimes people starve themselves to get attention from people who have overlooked their feelings.

I read one personal experience from an anonymous anorexic girl. She said she had been getting top grades, was expected to go uni and work extremley hard. The pressure got to her and no one around her seemed to care about her feelings towards this - only that she did well. She started starving herslef to say "look! I'm here and i have feelings - notice them".

Many people do believe it is "cool" to have an mental illness. But many just don't want to be alone.

I read all the replies and didnt feel like i was able to contribute to this until i read Kereilly's binge story.

For the past year i have seriously started to lose weight and so far i have lost a stone and gained most of it back in muscle. I was doing enough exercise and eating well but then started to eat less and exercise more to the point that i looked tired and ill.

Since then (its been about 5 months) i have been getting worse. At one point i started to eat only 1000-1200 calories while doing 2 -3 hours of intense rowing training. My coach started to worry and i decided i needed to up it to 1400-1500 if i was to continue my secret weight loss plan AND keep progressing in rowing.

I am still doing this but now i have discovered binging. One day i just decided... i am fed up not eating what i want. I am going to eat tonnes of bad food - spending nearly 20 pounds on junk..i stopped at the supermarket and bought a lunch of flapjacks, cookies, doughnuts, sandwcihes, choclate bars (around 7-8), and tonnes and tonnes of ice cream. i remember sitting on the bus home after about 1 hour of buying food and stuffing it in... i was eating a bag of white choco cookies.... just lifting chunks and putting them in my mouth while crying and shaking quietly on the bus.. ready to puke. People were beginning to look as i scecretly took pieces out of a tesco bag. I then got home, ran passed my mum and into my bedroom. I took out a massive tub of cookie dough ben and jerry's ice cream, turned on a show about celebrity bodies and slowly ate all of it while feeling extremely sick and having  stomach  cramps. The guilt began to overwhelm me as i watched these skinny models and hoped one day i would be like that ...

I hoped that day would be the last but i promised myself i could do it once a month... like that was gonna happen.

I had the next one 2 weeks later... after that i continued to do it every weekend.... and now it happens every 2-3 days.

I have tried purging but i find i am a whimp. I have hidden foods my mum cooks in tissue and spat and chewed on non binge days. My training in rowing is suffering and i really want to break this cycle and lose wieght healthily lke i did at the beginning.

Hearing the other stories makes me realise how much serious it can get and i know i need to get help soon before it ends up being like that. My mind enjoys the pain i go through just because it stops me from feeling like a lazy fat person which s totally stupid.

I want to tell my coach and i want him to help me because he is my fvourite person and i really trust him but i am very embarissed to let nyone know how pathetic i am..

Thank you for starting this thread... its giving me  chance to open up to other people who know what i am going through.. i hope you all get on with enjoying life like i am going to try to do.

I am 18 years old, 6ft and i weigh around 148lbs. I have lost 6 pounds so far since September last year and 8 more lbs is my goal by May this year. I am trying to get there by doing weights and tonnes of cardio! the only place on my body that really has fat left is my hips and waist... the middle section basically! Hopefully that will come off with hard work by MAY!!!!!!!

In my gym where i train in rowing too... i am the only one apart from one other female rower who does weights. I do them 3 times a week and have started to lift up to 60KG... which is 10KG less than my own body wieght! I am very proud and proud of my muscles which are for strength not bulk and being 6 ft 1 i think they add to my physique.... not make me look manly. It also depends on your own ideals in terms of attractivness... i like muscle and i don't care if i have more than my boyfriend... cos it makes me stand taller, look confident and i feel great!

Weight Loss Milk or soy milk? Jan 05 2008

I only drink soya milk and rice milk because i hate the creamy taste of regular and semi skimmed milk... it also means i consume fewer calories and fat in my porridge but i gotta say if you like rice milk its the best damn thing to have!! So yummy and a little bit of sugar to boost your morning workout

i've noticed that too - about how you have to find what works for you.  I mean when i tend to lose weight and can feel myself  becoming healthier it is because i have been relaxed and not been too worried about food... its normally after ive got into a routine of eating well and have just learnt to do it like its second nature. That's when you lose the most weight- when your'e not too stressed and you are doing it as it suits you. I have tried eating bigger meals in the morning and it had given me a real boost - i also don't get as stupidly hungry as i used too and at night i dont binge anymore! So i know it is working for me... also i like sweet things and having banana porridge at dinner is a real treat lol

There is definitley a real mix of opinion... but i do agree that the types of food are the key- since having more protein i the morning is the best thing if your active during the day and not at night. I can no longer use protein powder because it can get me banned from my sport so i HAVE to eat actual food with protein in it. This means i might as well eat fish and chicken etc for breakfast cos oatmeal with whey protein isn't allowed lol.

YOUHEARTME - i'm glad someone uses it ... i think it will work for some and not for others and i am trying today just for a tester!

That is true.. i mean i eat around the same amount but some times i do overeat at night because i haven't had enough earlier and im hungry later on. Its also the types of food you eat...

But even if it is a good idea it is quite awkward if you are eating with people... because it will be totally different food! I don't think i could do it for ever.

Weight Loss Is this mealplan healthy? Aug 24 2007

I know this is long but read it!!

I know what its like not being able to bring yourself to eat more even if you know its unhealthy.

The only way to beat it is to really learn what foods will give you the most nutrition with low calories like veg and fruit and whole wheat pasta, brown rice etc. There is nothing wrong with sticking with veg but make sure you do eat protein and more carbs with fat in them at least once a day at first. Eat little bits throughout the day and dont worry about it making you gain wieght because it is well known that the best way to lose or maintain weight is to eat small amounts regulary.

Eat every 3 hours if you can and every time you eat get a little bowl - add some veg like carrots, spinach, green beans etc , or a piece of fruit like youve been doing. Then add a small portion of brown rice or something with carbs like a peiece of wholemeal bread. Protein can come from lentils which are low calorie and full of carbs and protein. Meat like lean chicken can be really helpful if you do eat meat.... 1 breast a day of lean meat like chicken could give you a very small but important amount of good fat and lots of protein!

But most of all youve got to talk to someone who knows about probelms with food like eating disorders and people who struggle to eat more like alot of us do. They wont be rude or have a go at you they will help you and make sure that you get out of the bad rut of deprivation - they will or at least should support you.

I hope this helps you can talk to me anytime if you wana cos i like to help!! xx emski
Recipes Sweet potatoes Aug 24 2007

sweet potato soup -

1 serving equals one medium sized sweet potato.

Skin and chop up the potato and boil for 20 minutes or longer till nice and soft . Add ginger, or whatever you like ( i like chili sauce!!) and maybe some other green veg or spinach is nice or just plain sweet potato. Add a stock cube (veg) into the boiled potato and water and once its all dissolved and nice pour into a liquidiser or smoothie maker etc and just mix ! Add abit of pepper at the end it tastes so GOOD!! and is very good for you!

I heard a clean diet where you eat whole foods is the key along with exercise. Diet is the main part when you don't have it naturally. I noticed (well i think im right) that since i have started eating whole foods and no refined flours /sugars or simple carbs etc that ive actually got a bit of a smoother and firmer stomach and i can see my tone coming through. I work my abs everyday and i do them with quality crunches and waist work using dumbells. Ive noticed a big difference and diet has made that difference.

I think the best way to reduce salt is to make your own soup!! It tastes so great....

I normally use 1 sweet potato, garlic, ginger and some onion. I boil it with some vege stock till really soft and then use a juicer to make it into soup.

Fitness 2-a-day cardio workouts Aug 11 2007

I'm doing 20 -30 minutes on the rowing machine now but its best not to just focus on that because if you are not being given coaching for that specific sport you can begin to learn bad habits which might spoil my chances of passing. They said i am being tested on endurance so thats what im focusing on using many different types of workouts.

Thanks :) I bet that concert was fun! I love heavy metal ones cos no one cares about what you look like - its about how crazy u are lol You are right - fun and being with people you like i find is the best way to lift spirits.

I also talked to my boyfriend about my bad thoughts of suicide and he was shocked and said he'd tell my mum. I made him keep it to himself and he said he would as long as i phoned him up the next time i felt like that.

His reassurance really made me realise how bad it actually was to be thinking these things on a daily basis when i have a good life with a small but good group of people who love me for who i am.

I'm hoping i can continue to think healthier about things by just focusing on my good points. THanks for the support here its really given me a boost.
