I wasn't smacked as a child because I was an obedient little thing and my parents could keep me in line with a stern word and a fierce look....

However, I think there's a place for smacking - especially at the toddler stage when powers of language and reasoning are about as good as the average Labrador.  I have used it on only one or two occasions.  My definition of successful smacking is that it has to be used very sparsely,  brief in nature, definitely not brutal and it has to be immediate to make the point... not carried out at some later stage.

My son is very well-behaved nine year-old.  These days discipline is more about setting expectations and making sure they're followed up.  He crumples if you raise your voice.   I'm sure somewhere he still remembers the one or two occasions from years and years ago when he got a slap on the wrist for stepping way out of line.... maybe that's not a bad thing.

Just like me!

My dad's temples would throb and he would give me that 'look' and I'd cry so hard he didn't have to spank me! LOL  I do remember getting spanked twice.  My parents were having their house built and they were laying the concrete slab for the drive way. I thought it was a great idea to go with my friends and walk ALL over the wet cement and draw and write my name, etc.  The second time was at another house we lived in.... we were playing 'Bloody Mary' and I threw these berries that stain all over the side of the house.

Same with my kid too Jane - I spanked him a few times as a toddler but now all I have to do is get my mom voice and get mad... then after we calm down we talk it out.

Obama IS the president and despite him stating [numerous times] he is a ''devout Christian'', the 'bible thumping right certainly didn't vote for him.  I believe there is a poll out there to prove that one, too.

But, hey, if it makes you feel better to believe Obama's beliefs are more in line with your own..then so be it.  It's really rude to tell people their beliefs are crazy...dontcha think?

To the 2nd paragraph:

No, it doesn't make me feel better to believe Obama's beliefs are like mine; in fact, I don't even know that they are.  I have suspicion but that's all - - either way makes no difference to me.  I don't care if  he's a devout Christian, a Muslim or Agnostic -- Whatever he is does not get in the way of him being a fair man, IMO.  I think he is a man who would put his beliefs aside and do what's best for ALL beliefs/people - - that's why I think he's a great leader.

Do I still think that it's demanded of Presidents in this day and age to be Christian in order to take office? You betcha.  You don't?  Do you really think an Atheist would win an election right now?  Does that mean Obama is lying??? No.  Would it be way off base to say that him lying is impossible? nope.

P.S. When have I said other people's beliefs are crazy?

... To the 1st paragraph:   That sorta tells you right there that in order to be President you have to be Christian. The bible thumping right did not vote for him because they thought he was Muslim. (Not ALL the right, but a lot).

I think youre really a bible belting conservative Christian. Just bc you stated you are not means nothing. Right?

Note: It's as valid as your point above about Obama.

If I wanted to run for President of the United States because I felt I could do some real good in the world but I knew that being an Agnostic wouldn't get me in office because of the close minded bible thumping right - I would lie and say I was a Christian if it was for the greater good.  Again, not saying this is what Obama has done - I said it was a thought.  Please quit freaking out like I'm saying this is the God's honest truth.. it's a thought and opinion. I'm probably wrong. Forgive me oh brilliant one for sharing a THOUGHT.

I never liked watching porn with my boyfriend - it always made me feel like he was thinking of those girls instead of me.

I don't have a problem with him watching it alone as long as it didn't interfere with our relationship (i.e. he's now masturbating so much that he has nothing left for me or he can't perform unless he watches porn first).  Other than that - I don't care.  I like it too sometimes!

Not assuming any more than you are.

Nope. I'm not assuming anything. I'm going on fact. Below is a quote from the President.

[To say he is not religious would be an assumption based soley on what you, or Lorik. et al, would like to believe. To say he is not religious would, indeed, be implying he is a LIAR.]

"I am a Christian, and I am a devout Christian. I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that that faith gives me a path to be cleansed of sin and have eternal life. But most importantly, I believe in the example that Jesus set by feeding the hungry and healing the sick and always prioritizing the least of these over the powerful." (Barack Obama Christianity Today, January 2008)

I also am not assuming anything about the Kennedys. It is a known FACT that were VERY religous.  Would you like some of their quotes, as well?

I know he says he's a Christian I just have a feeling is a bit more liberal than MOST Christians and could possibly be Agnostic.. that, IMO, is a Good thing.

Who brought up the Kennedys?

Oh, I doubt the president is actually very religious (it is a political tool, he would not be president if he was not christian).

Wow, you even 'know' what the President really feels. You should have your own 800-Pyschic line!

I also disagree with you about Obama. And, many politicians..such as the Kennedy Family. VERY religious catholic family..or do you secretly know they are just lying, too?

I've always 'felt' that President Obama was not a very religious man myself.  Do I know for a fact? No.  It's just my gut feeling.

I'm a huge supporter of the president by the way. I LIKE the fact that he's more liberal in areas that other fiercely conservatives are not - such as stem cell research.  If I were to guess I would say he's either a very liberal Christian who, like many in the world, go to church because it's the thing to do... or, he's agnostic... or maybe even a closet Atheist! Surprised  No one can know except for Mr. Obama.

If a man ran for office and claimed to be Agnostic or Atheist there's no way he would win - - - so in order for someone to get in the door and make some positive changes, they have to play the game.

Again - just my GUT feeling.

Doh!  I just came back to delete this but I'm too late.. LOL - - I thought you said you were Pentecostal... Ok - starting over.

1. God and Jesus are the same.  So God punishes himself to appease himself for a crime that humanity committed (which he already knew they were going to do). How does this make sense?

2.  You believe he died for our sins but you don't believe we are born sinners?

3.  You believe you must accept Christ as Lord because it was written in the Bible correct?  Even though you know the book is not the book of God - because how can a book be holy when it's been passed around, added to, and nit picked to suite so many different beliefs?

4. Same as number 3...  You say the Bible is man made and has evolved over time. Has the evolution stopped and that's why you believe what's left (i.e .the stories, etc?) is the true word.  God's final answer if you will?      Or do you think it will continue to evolve?  If so - why were the other 300 books dismissed?

5. I said actual place.  I thought you said you didn't believe in an actual location for heaven and hell?  I'll have to look back at your posts.  Still.. it's pretty amazing to me that someone like Jeffery Dahmer (sp) the serial killer.. can accept the lord in prison and be saved and go to heaven and  yet someone like me who is honest, hard working, does good deeds, doesn't hurt people, caretaker to my family, good mom - -- I will go to hell for not believing...

6. HOw can you believe we are not born sinners if you believe the Bible to be true? It says it right there.. that's the whole reason Jesus died on the cross - which you believe in right?

7. Sorry about the UPC thing.. LOL  - oops

I have a LOT more questions but this is good for now.

Edit* Meant to delete the bottom thing but I think I'll keep it.  :)  In case you're wondering why I had a random statement at the bottom..  :/

. God tells Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of knowledge or they will die.  Well they eat and don't die.  Doesn't that make God a liar? How do they even know what 'to die' means? Not very fair of God. How do they even know what 'wrong' is if it takes eating from the tree of knowledge to be right or wrong?

I'd love to hear your personal beliefs - I'm very curious because, as I've said before, it sounds nothing like any of the Christians I know or have known.  I think it might help in the discussion between you guys.

Well, I wasn't planning on getting into this until we got past the cosmology discussion, but since you aren't asking why I believe these things, then it can't hurt.

Its kinda hard to go through everything that I believe. The closest thing that comes to explaining my beliefs is non-denomenational protestant. Most of my beliefs come directly from the bible. Others come from scholars who interpret the bible.

Other than that, if you have any questions on specific beliefs, feel free to ask.

1. Do you believe God is a trinity?  The father, the son and the holy spirit?

2. Do you believe Jesus died on the cross for your sins?

3. Do you believe you must accept Jesus, be baptized or speak in tongues in order to be "saved"?

4. Do you believe the stories in the Bible are true? i.e. Sodom and Gomorrah, Daniel and the den of lions, Jonah in the whale, etc, etc.

5. Do you believe there is an actual place where your soul will go when you die? Heaven and Hell

6. Do you believe we are born sinners?

7. Do you follow the articles of faith from the UPC?

I don't believe what I "want to believe" (it would be a lot more fun to believe in star wars universe...i wub wookies)....I believe the only possible thing to believe (and that is simply understanding the answer "could" be anything, but no reason to believe in any one thing randomly).

So, since you said, and I will quote..."the answer could be anything''...meaning...Simwaves could be right! IN YOUR OPINION, you could be wrong!

[IMO, you ARE wrong..but what the hell do  I know].

I think you both have given awesome arguments...Simwaves more on actual FACT. ...You on more of REACHING to explain/argue your stance. ..Either way, both are relative...just only ONE hits home [and I believe this is true with the MAJORITY of the people that have read this thread[ not just the 10's of 20's that have PM'ed me]. Lorik, I respectfully have to say...

YOU MAKE NO SENSE. EXCEPT that you seem to make an HUGE amount of SENSE to YOURSELF since you respond to questions as if it is all obvious! HA.

I thank Simwaves for EXPLAINING his answers and not just BLURTING them out and BELITTLING others..

Lorik, may the force be with you.

You're the only one who likes to belittle people fitness girl.

I seriously doubt that the majority of folks reading this agree with Simms. In fact, I doubt they even know what the hell he's talking about - including you. Like Lorik said, he's a lot of smoke and mirrors.  He likes to say big fancy words and quote from books to prove he's right.  Well, he can't prove he's right... and that's all Lorik is trying to say.

You said anyone reading this post would agree that simms has the advantage. Hmm, don't think so.

Lorik doesn't beat around the bush - he's straight forward and he pushes back with legitimate arguments (If that's what you call this). I'm impressed.

There is no way that a robot could work at McDonald's.  The robot would roll itself right into the ocean and drown itself.

Last night, I had some man freaking out at me over the price of his meal.  It came to $9.something, and YES, some value meals if you replace the drink with a chocolate shake, are going to cost about $9-10.  This man freaked out.  He literally screamed at me through the drive-thru speaker.  He was rather violently screaming too and my supervisor ran over because he heard it through the speaker and he took care of it because this guy was seriously scaring me.  I was honestly a little scared that I'd get stabbed when I took the money at the window.

I think a robot could for sure... if they can be secretaries and schedule meetings and book travel, do expenses, etc.. then they can take money and give customers food!  People could scream all they want - robots wouldn't care.

If robots could do my job... well, we'd be screwed. I write computer programs... that could get scary fast of they could program themselves to do... anything.

As far as robots doing other jobs, I guess it'd be nice to eliminate human error in jobs where precision is important (ie surgeons, etc), but we already have alot of people without jobs. I also see that taking a terrible toll on the earth, concidering we'd have an army of 'people' available that could work 24/7 and do physically demanding tasks with much more ease than humans...

Ooohhh, that would be scary if they could write their own programs!

It could eliminate human error and also people having to tip for so many services.. but, what would WE do?  All the folks out of work?  That reminds me of Wall-E - -anyone see that Disney movie?  We'll all be fat, sitting in recliners with virtual helmets on *thinking* we are living our lives. Someone sent me this - so I thought I'd share..

Point 1.

As things stand now, the vast majority of children who develop flu-like symptoms this fall will have a few miserable days, and nothing more. And those days are best spent at home -- not in the ER or a doctor's office.

Point 2.

If you are worried, you should call your pediatrician's office first. Don't take your child in without calling. Two reasons: Your child may not have H1N1, but could become exposed by being around sick children. And, after several hours of waiting, you are still likely to be told the basics -- plenty of fluids, rest and dose-appropriate acetaminophen for a fever. After all, it is still the flu we are talking about.

Point 3.

One doctor told me a way to think about things that was helpful. He said "remove the term H1N1 from the equation." If your child had regular flu, would you take him to the hospital? If the answer is no, then don't take him/her to the hospital now.

Point 4.

Yes, hearing between 30,000 and 90,000 could die from H1N1 is scary, but keep in mind -- around 40,000 people die from the regular or seasonal flu every year. The numbers may not be that much different, yet there is not panic about the regular flu. As things look now, H1N1 is causing only mild to moderate illness, not the widespread deaths people are worried about.

Point 5.

There are some children who should be seen by their doctor. Call your doctor if:

• A baby younger than 12 weeks has a fever greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit

• A child, older than 12 weeks has a fever for three days

• A child's fever returns after a 12-24 hour time period

• A child is not passing urine or making tears for more than six hourshttp://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/swine-flu/D S01144.html_

• A child does not smile or show interest in playing for several hours
