I do it once a day at the same time and under the same circumstances. I was skeptical about that until I had a talk with a friend of mine who is a nutritionist and trainer. He explained that your body changes and does fluctuate. Sometimes you can find a pattern and I have. I find that my body does its 'losing' between Tuesday and Thursday every week, for whatever reason. If you weigh in once a week and that number is not a good one, you may not feel good about it. But what if is was some extra sodium in your diet the day before that caused you to retain water and thus be heavier? You only get that one chance per week to see what the scale says. As long as it doesn't unnerve you to see the ebb and flow of your body, then I think it is healthy. It helped me alot when I was losing weight (58 lbs) and am still doing it in maintenance now for the past few months. The key to whenever you do it is to be consistent. Weigh yourself on the same scale under the same exact circumstances so your comparison to the previous weight is an 'apples to apples' comparison. Good Luck! |

The end is here, for this forum. Only a few of us survived it and we should be proud of that. Here is what I have for my numbers on 9/15/08: CW: 184.4 (+.4, -8.6 overall for this challenge) GW: 180.0 BMI: 26.4 CBF%: 12.7% (8mm on the caliper) GBF%: < 12% (6-7mm on the caliper)
I'm happy with the progress during this forum. I've been on maintenance since August started and have been pretty steady within a 3 lb area. I'll get back to finishing off and hitting my goal, which is only 4.4 lbs away at the beginning of 2009. Too tough for me in the Fall to be focused enough and those last few pounds are going to be tough to drop. I'll be really happy and satisfied if I maintain throughout the Fall and the holidays as this is the toughest time of year for me. I'm always renewed and focused in January, so if I maintain until then, tackling the last few pounds should be easy. Good Luck to all of you, and even to those who didn't make it through. Any questions or need to bounce a question or idea off of someone, please contact me. Thanks,

Wow, it's Thursday already. Glad the week is going by fast. Here is what I have for my numbers on 9/11/08: CW: 184.0 (-.4, -9.0 overall for this challenge) GW: 180.0 BMI: 26.4 CBF%: 12.7% (8mm on the caliper) GBF%: < 12% (6-7mm on the caliper)

Original Post by steelerfan: It is hard. Remember, this should be a lifestyle change and not just a diet. Diets end and the weight comes back. Lifestyle changes are completed and last. It's hard for me at this time of year to lose, so I've decided to just maintain from here through the end of the year. Better to know and understand that, then to get frustrated and go back to old bad eating habits. Also, remember to give yourself some cheat meals. I've been eating extremely clean all week (Monday through Friday), then pick and cheat one day over the weekend. Now, I won't go eat 5,000 calories, but I will treat myself to a dessert or a bad meal. It's been working for me now since early August. I'm stuck with roughly 5 lbs to go and it's the toughest to lose, so I'm putting it off until the New Year, when I can concentrate more on losing it and set myself up for success. Good Luck! P.S. - Steelers looked good this week! Go Giants! |

We had our big town fair this past weekend and I ate a nice big ice cream. Here is what I have for my numbers on 9/8/08: CW: 184.4 (-.2, -8.6 overall for this challenge) GW: 180.0 BMI: 26.4 CBF%: 12.7% (8mm on the caliper) GBF%: < 12% (6-7mm on the caliper) Good Luck to all that are still here!!!! Marmel, we miss you buddy!!!! Thanks to those that have stuck it out this past month when many have faded away. |

Original Post by theluckiest: I see that you are only eating 1200 - 1300 calories a day. What does CC say your burn is? I put in a female at 25 years old at 165 and sedentary lifestyle at 5 foot 10 inches and it states 1900 calories a day burn. The best way to lose those last pounds is to burn them off, don't starve them off. I would eat more, good foods, much closer to your daily maintenance calories and burn the fat off with exercise. When you are close to the end, you cannot or should not, keep a big deficit. Your body will slow it metabolism down. The more you eat, close to your maintenance, the better your metabolism will burn, and you can do the cardio and lifting to exercise those last pounds off of you. Tom Venuto talks alot about this - http://www.burnthefat.com/ He's well known and a pioneer in the nutrition and exercise field. His ideas are also backed up by others who do the same (Karl Baumgart - http://www.thebodcoach.com) as well.

Happy Thursday! The week is almost over!!!!! Here is what I have for my numbers on 9/4/08: CW: 184.6 (+.6, -8.4 overall for this challenge) GW: 180.0 BMI: 26.4 CBF%: 12.7% (8mm on the caliper) GBF%: < 12% (6-7mm on the caliper)
Just maintaining and I'm okay with that for now. I'm in a very busy and less focused time of year for me, so maintaining is doing great. This is the time of year that I usually slip up, gain weight and blink and it's January and I've gained a bunch of weight back again. Not this time. I got a motivational picture this past weekend of a side shot of me from last winter that I'll keep with me to keep me motivated to keep off the weight. Good Luck to those CCers still with us! Keep moving! |

I'm getting busy now. School starts this week. My wife goes back to work/school today and my kids start full-time school/daycare today as well. My summer is over and back to the real grind. I may go into maintenance mode from now through the end of the year. I'd be very excited to maintain and see myself start in late January/early February right where I am right now. I've never done that before and with only about 5 lbs from my goal weight and a couple of mm on the caliper, I can take it home to completion late Winter when I'm less busy and tend to really focus. We'll see how it goes. Happy Monday!!!! |

I just focused on eating well and now my back is at 100% and am glad that I took it easy to let it heal. Good luck with the hammie! |

P.S. - Where is everyone??? Have we lost some folks along the way? Let's keep it going!!!! This is the toughest time of year (from mid-summer through the end of the year) for me to lose weight and maintain. Probably the same for others, so this is the time we need to stick together, good or bad numbers. |

Happy Monday! Yup, the weekend is gone and now back to the grind. Feels good being back to working out. I bought a book on exercises for the exercise ball I have. I'm adding in 1 - 2 days when I don't lift and only jog on the treadmill to working my core on the ball. Did it last night. I found 5 exercises that I tried from the book and did each of them twice. It took about 30 minutes, then I jogged for 30 minutes. Good workout. Here is what I have for my numbers on 8/18/08: CW: 184.4 (-2.8, -8.6 overall for this challenge) GW: 180.0 BMI: 26.4 CBF%: 12.7% (9mm on the caliper) GBF%: < 12% (6-7mm on the caliper) I think that I'm getting off of my plateau. Added calories and adjusted my workout routines (added the exercise ball and resistance bands). Good Luck to All! Keep up the good work!!!!! |

It's Thursday again. Not much change. Started to lift and jog again. Feeling like I'm in a rut/plateau. If I'm still around 186/187 after the weekend, then it will be time to zig zag. These last few pounds are the hardest. I feel good, but want to hit this goal. It's a challenge to myself. I've come a long way, down from 225 this past January, and promised myself to reach my goals this time. Here is what I have for my numbers on 8/14/08: CW: 187.2 (+.4, -5.8 overall for this challenge) GW: 180.0 BMI: 26.7 CBF%: 14.8% (10mm on the caliper) GBF%: < 12% (6-7mm on the caliper)

Happy Monday everyone! Finally got back into the gym, lifting and jogging again. I extended my vacation break for a month. My body really needed time off, but now it's time to go back. Worked out both Saturday and Sunday and it felt good. Though I am sore from taking off so much time. Here is what I have for my numbers on 8/11/08: CW: 186.8 (-.6, -6.2 overall for this challenge) GW: 180.0 BMI: 26.7 CBF%: 14.8% (10mm on the caliper) GBF%: < 12% (6-7mm on the caliper)

Original Post by steelerfan: If you are truly in a rut/plateau and are being faithful in your eating, then try eating more calories for a few days, then come back down to your 'normal' calories. It's really a zig zag method and it's very effective. Your body may think that it's not getting enough fuel, so it may have slowed down the metabolism. So, by adding in 100 - 300 calories over a few days, then dropping back down to what you normally eat for calories, you body will kickstart again and raise your metabolism. Good Luck! |

Original Post by alle0299: Although I agree that it's very nice to see everyone's BMI go down, I'm not a huge fan of that measure overall. It's a very generic measure that doesn't allways apply. I call it the lazy doctor's diet plan. If they do not want to spend alot of time explaining how your body should be, then doctor's just look at the BMI chart and tell you to lose weight. I know that if I get down to the weight that my doctor wants me to be, that my wife would put me in the hospital for an eating disorder. It just wouldn't fit. I would look sick. For someone my height (5 foot, 10 inches), the high-end is around 170 lbs and the low end in the 150 lbs. Even if I put myself in the middle of my weight category at 160 lbs, I would look sick. Now, that's because I've worked out in the gym for over 20 years and have put on some muscle do to that, which makes me at 160 lbs look anorexic and sick. That's why the BMI should only be a single guide, but that overall body composition should be looked at. A good doctor will measure your bodyfat. Sorry to be a downer, but I want to be sure that we take a look at all of our measuring options. The biggest one is the mirror. How do you look? Then use your clothes. How do they fit? Then measure your body with a measuring tape to see how many inches you've lost. Those are easy measurements/scales that we all can employ and get good answers back quickly. Enjoy and let's all keep going!!!!!! I'm proud of everyone on this forum. Losing weight is hard. Maintaining it is even harder. It's great that we are all here trying to do the right thing for ourselves. Take stock in that. |

| Weight Loss | Zig zag diet | Aug 05 2008 03:57 (UTC) |

I've done it on plateaus. Don't just go down in calories. Part of the zig zag is to go up in calories for 1 - 3 days above your normal caloric intake. It makes your body think that you are giving it more, thus turning up the metabolism, then you take it back down on the next part of the zig zag.

Happy Monday! Today stinks for me. Back to work after taking a nice 2 week time off from work. My brain is rested, but it still doesn't want to go back. Busy now as peewee football starts, so I'll be coaching 5 nights a week this month. Good exercise as I'll be running with the 6, 7 and 8 year olds for 2 hours a night. Here is what I have for my numbers on 7/28/08: CW: 189.6 (-1.8) GW: 180.0 BMI: 27.1 CBF%: 14.8% (11mm on the caliper) GBF%: < 12% (6-7mm on the caliper) Good Luck to everyone! |

| Calorie Count | More options than just Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, and Dinner | Jul 28 2008 01:35 (UTC) |

I am still looking for this option. It would be great if we could get a semi-total for each meal/snack as well. This way I could see how many calories I'm eating for lunch, breakfast, snack 1, snack 2, dinner, etc.. |
|||
| Calorie Count | Food/Activity Log | Jul 28 2008 01:33 (UTC) |

That option would be great. I tend to eat the same breakfasts and snacks, and at times, lunches during my work week. This option would make it much easier and less time consuming to copy from day to day. |

Original Post by eeyvdj: For some reason, I'm not finding 63% as accurate. I'm more inclined to believe the 42% over the 63%. 32% bodyfat is considered obese in women. Maybe your fiance is correct as he knows you and sees you, but I still find it hard to believe, though it is possible for yours to be 63%. How does the YMCA measure your bodyfat? Are they doing it with any measurements or are you using a scale to tell you? If you really want to know, find a professional to give you measurement. Maybe your doctor can suggest someone to do the measurement. |

Original Post by steelerfan: Your bodyfat % can go up when you lose weight if you lose muscle instead of fat. The bodyfat is a ratio and if you lose muscle, then the ratio goes up on the fat side even if your scale says your weight goes down. This is why keeping track of bodyfat % is so crucial while losing weight because you want to know if you are losing muscle or fat. You want all the muscle you can get, since it will raise your metabolism and it's healthy. See if the bodyfat is a trend. I stopped using my scale to measure it and use a caliper. Even if the actual bodyfat % is not 100% accurate based on my own measuring it will be consistent and I can see the caliper measurements go down over time. |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
