| Foods | The Scoop on Salt | Apr 16 2008 20:25 (UTC) |

It's all about osmosis. Your body need a certain balance of salt and water and too much salt makes your body need water and extra water can kind of wash out some salt. Way too much water (gallons) dilutes the salt too much and you have a whole different problem. |

With the exception of chemistry class I don't think anyone actually means 1 calorie when they say "calorie." We always mean 1 kcal. (ya, no one really cares that it's incorrect) |

G2 has splenda (sucralose) in it so I won't drink it. I like vitamin water and it's half the calories of coke so for me it's a good choice when I want to drink something sweet. I won't drink anything with fake sugar (or even stevia). The taste ruins whatever it's in. |

Original Post by tmck99: not really. An ice cream machine is like $50 so it's not a huge investment. Also you can make granita which is similar but not as creamy. www.foodnetwork.com has some good recipes. |

| Weight Loss | MSG | Mar 24 2008 14:24 (UTC) |

monosodium glutamate is the full name of MSG. Hydrolyzed protein I think also contains MSG. It's a salt of an amino acid normally found in protein but when it's by itself instead of covalently bound to other amino acids in a protein it does different stuff to our bodies. My dad, brother, and I all get migraines from MSG although if it's a tiny amount (say less than a serving of bbq chips) then I'm usually ok. MSG is in most canned soups, flavored chips, and packaged/processed food. Some stuff I buy organic not so much b/c I specifically want to buy organic chicken broth but b/c it's the only one without MSG. |

I try to avoid MSG and food that list chemical compounds rather than ingredients I can find at the grocery store but this isn't absolute. I still eat ice cream and french fries and such, just limited amounts every now and then and within my calorie limit. |

Black coffee has 5 calories in 6 oz I think. It has calories but too few to matter unless you drink a lot if you are drinking it black. I put cream and sugar in my coffee so I log it. |

I don't use mine all that often. I use it for chips, some frozen "bag" food, and shredded cheese. More solid things like meat I can look at and guess pretty close to the correct weight. I cook/bake a lot so I feel I can look at volumes and know "that's a cup" or "that's a tablespoon." Vegetables have too little in them for it to matter if I'm off a little in what I log. After a while you learn what one oz of corn chips looks like and at least then in a restaurant you can guess how much chips and salsa you had. The only thing that really surprised me was how little a serving of cheese is. |

| Foods | Grits | Mar 24 2008 03:25 (UTC) |

I really like to add cheese and a dash of hot sauce. You can go the sugar and butter route if you like. Grits are made from corn meal and have little flavor on their own. Instant grits will be a little more "gritty" but regular grits cooked for 20-30 min will be nice and creamy. The texture is different than oatmeal of course. I had cream of wheat once maybe when I was a kid but I don't remember it. Edit: P.S. Shrimp and Grits is awesome. One of my fav. dishes. |

Sorbet is really good too. The recipe I use has you add a little sugar and like a shot of alcohol (to keep it from freezing too solid) to a few cups of fruit. |

My dad and brother's birthday were this weekend as well as Easter and this morning and last weekend was a weekend in Savannah for a Bachalorette party. I had gained a lot of weight. I think i'll skip the scale tomorrow. Anyway hopefully the weight move on. I'm sure I didn't eat like 20,000 calories extra over the past week. I wouldn't be surprised if I legitimately did gain 1 lb though. |

Original Post by bethy15: Actually it's half that. 50 calories in 8 oz, 125 calories in 20 oz. Coke on the other hand would have 250 calories in 20 oz. |

Grits are relativity low in calories, even with a little added cheese. I like mine with cheese, black pepper, and some texas pete. Also I always do stone ground grits cooked for a good 20-30 min so they are nice and creamy. No instant stuff. Shrimp and Grits is one of my fav meals. |

I hate fake sugar and I hate flavored water but I love vitamin water. They have a relatively high amount of sugar but for me they replace sodas or sweet tea, not water, so they are a better choice, certainly compared to the soda. Of course you will run into trouble if you are drinking sugar water in place of water whether there are vitamins or not. Just make sure you remember it has calories in it. Anyway if you like crystal lite and don't mind the chemical sweeteners that I guess that's better but I don't think vitamin water is evil. I don't think cutting out that 120 calories is going to magically make the pounds fall off. However I wouldn't drink them to get the vitamins. Also the grading scale give high grades if there are relatively a lot of vitamins and low grades if there is a relatively high amount of sugar but they aren't always very accurate. Like coffee with 2 t of sugar is like 40 calories in 16 oz which I think isn't bad at all but CC gave it a D or something b/c proportionally it's very high in sugar. |

| Weight Loss | Hungry for Fried Chicken, help? | Mar 13 2008 13:46 (UTC) |

| "oven-fried" chicken can be pretty good but even if you go for the real stuff 1 piece even with the skin is around 400 calories. My lunch/dinner is usually around 600 calories so that's a decent chunk but I'll be extra good the rest of the day every once in a while so I can eat a piece of fried chicken. Also the skin is my fav. part so I even eat that. Otherwise why eat fried chicken at all? Just don't do the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni, biscuit meal. That'll get you into trouble. | |||
| Foods | Milk? | Mar 13 2008 13:39 (UTC) |
|
| Soy milk doesn't taste like milk. I don't consider one a substitute for the other but consider them two different drinks that are similar in some aspects. Also there is very little difference in calorie content. Soy may have some health advantages but if I want milk soy juice isn't going to cut it. Iced soy chai lattes are good though. I don't like hot soy drinks at all. Anyway I doubt that switching from 1% milk to soy would do much for your weight loss. If you like soy go for it, but I don't see a reason to force a change if you don't like it. Me, I'll stick with my cow milk for most of the time. | |||

| Foods | Dark vs. Milk chocolate great debate | Mar 12 2008 03:04 (UTC) |
13 |
| I actually like dark chocolate best. Always have as long as I can remember. I remember as a kid actually liking cocoa power and my mom told me i was weird. Every once in a while I want the more creamy milk chocolate but most any time I buy chocolate I buy the 60-70% cocoa kind. Milk chocolate often has an almost grainy texture unless it's the really good stuff. Anyway I like the more bitter as opposed to the sweet stuff. It's an added bonus that the dark chocolate is semi-healthy. | |||
| Foods | Calling all chocoholics: Cocoa bean opinions, please! | Mar 09 2008 06:36 (UTC) |

| Cocoa nibs are pieces of the "bean/nut" that chocolate is made from. Chocolate is essentially ground cocoa nibs with sugar and usually some milk. Chocolate covered espresso beans are just that. A coffee bean, whole, covered in chocolate. | |||

| Well if you drink vitamin water as water than you'll run into problems. If you drink it instead of coke (like I do) you get half the calories and some vitamins as well. And vitamin water has real sugar in it, not fake. | |||

| If your pan is too crowded then you'll have a lot of moisture collect in the pan. Usually I cube the chicken and stir-fry it with a little bit of oil. Grilling is my favorite. (on a charcoal grill) | |||
| Foods | Why are there NO TRANS FAT FREE FROSTINGS? | Mar 07 2008 20:35 (UTC) |
2 |
| Making frosting is really easy. It's just butter and powder sugar and some flavoring. There are otehr varieties that are more complicated and have different textures. Butter doesn't do so well sitting on shelves for months and I guess lard would work but people are scared of that stuff so they are left with the chemically altered fat. | |||
| Foods | I don't see how this could be 346 calories. | Mar 06 2008 15:12 (UTC) |

| You can easily have good beef vegetable soup with less and/or lower fat meat. Anyway I usually eat about 500 calories at dinner and 350 calories doesn't sound bad at all. However the soup would be healthier with less meat or lower fat meat. Personally I love beef so I'm not going to tell you to do soy or ground turkey or anything. I can't imagine ground meat in a soup anyway. | |||
| Foods | Potato versus Sweet Potato | Mar 05 2008 16:34 (UTC) |
17 |
| I only like sweet potatoes with brown sugar. I've had fries and chips made with them and they just don't taste right to me. Anyway to be "healthy" I make a baked sweet potato with just a little bit of brown sugar and light butter and put cinnamon on it. It's got a lot of vitamins that I don't get otherwise since I don't like carrots or many other vegetables, I really should eat more sweet potatoes. That said, I have no problems with the regular potato. Baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, and home-fries are great and I certainly don't consider them "bad" as long as I keep cheese and butter to a minimum. | |||

Nuts and things like sunflower or pumpkin seeds are healthy snacks also. On the 3 vs 6 meals a day thing some people say it keeps your metabolism going so you burn more calories. I've heard that that is a myth. The only believable reason I have heard to eat more frequently is so then you never get really hungry and are less likely to over eat. Personally I don't feel satisfied from snacks, only a "square meal" so I just eat 3 meals a day. |

| I think the Kashi TLC granola bars are pretty good as far as granola bars go. I like that they aren't crazy sweet like so many granola bars out there. Sometimes I make my own using a slightly modified recipe from Alton Brown. | |||
