If you try to maintain one set weight you are going to go insane. Try maintaining within an acceptable range instead. Just decide on a 4 pound range you would find acceptable and then keep your weight within the range. |

| Weight Loss | BMI inaccurate for very short and very tall people? | Jul 28 2008 17:40 (UTC) |

I am 6 foot tall and I drop from overweight into the healthy weight category at 183 lbs. At 183, I still have a good bit of jiggle on my thighs and a good bit (more than I like) around my waist and hips. I think I look and feel the best at 165-170 lbs which irronically falls directly in the middle of the healthy weight range on the BMI. My husband is very broad in shoulders and chest, 6 ft 2 in, and often falls in the overweight category while at the same time measuring at around 11% body fat. I would consider him in the athlete category. He swims, lifts, runs, and cycles regularly. In my family picture in my profile, my husband is at a BMI of 27 and also at the lowest weight he has been at since junior high. My point is that my husband and I are both considered tall. For me, an average person that spends about 3-4 hours a week exercising, the BMI scale seems to be a good measurement of a healthy weight. For my husband, a more serious athlete with a good deal of muscle mass, the BMI seems to be a bit skewed. I think height is not the factor that throws it off. |

You can't completely change who you are, I am an introvert always have been always will be. I will always prefer being in a group of 4 or 5 more than at a large party. That being said you have to step out of your comfort zone to meet new people. I used to tell myself "tonight I am going to make one friend, tonight I am going to talk to the people around me." Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't. My husband was the friend I made on one of those nights so I am definitely glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone once in a while. I always also appreciated having a close friend with me on those nights to help me feel more comfortable. Is there somebody you can talk with about how you feel that can help you feel more comfortable and break the ice for you? |

Relax, if you were eating slightly below maintenance than you did not gain 2 pounds in a week. It is probably water weight or the extra food still in your system or something. You said you just started exercising this week. If this is new your muscles will be storing extra water in them while they repair themselves. Also, when you switch from restricting calories to maintenance there usually is a jump of a few pounds on the scale. One high day on the scale is nothing - I weigh myself everyday because it forces me to face the scale each morning and stay honest in my eating habits and I have learned fluctuations of a few pounds from day to day is nothing, it is the overall trend you need to be concerned about; it takes more than a few days to establish a trend. |

I have polarized sunglasses and I love them. I use them for running, biking, and driving mainly but those activities are the majority of my outside time. They knock out practically all glare and I know I definitely squint less now which in turn means I feel less eye strain.

You would be amazed at how much the treadmill "assists" during your stride by pushing your foot backwards but if you keep at running outside you will get it and you probably will find it much more enjoyable. |

I felt the same way when I first started running. I started with a walk/run combination and I increased the length of my running intervals but after about 8 weeks I still could not run an entire 5k distance without taking a walk break. I couldn't figure out why and then I read something on these boards about breathing. The poster suggested on focusing on a good strong exhale so on the inhale your body is getting more air. I was so unaccustomed to an oxygen debt that I was frantically trying to breath in more air without exhaling all of the air already in my lungs. The evening I tried this I ran 40 minutes straight without a walking break, it was amazing. I don't know if this is what ails you but I thought I would offer it for your consideration. Also, as I have continued to run I have learned that an oxygen debt is just the natural state of running and I have gotten more used to it. When I started running I was uncomfortable because I wasn't used to the oxygen debt, so I would slow down and walk but I have now learned that I can deal with the oxygen debt for much longer than I originally thought. When I want to stop and walk I usually tell myself at that next telephone pole or in a quater mile and then when I get there I discover I can go another telephone pole and then another.

I am not sure if heel stiking is causing your ankle and knee pain but landing on your heel (heavily) while you are running actually can cause you to run slower because it brakes you and causes your legs to do all of the work. A more efficient way to run is to land on your mid foot or to lightly land on your heel with your foot just about directly under your body. This actually positions your foot and leg to propel you into the next stride. I would be cautious of making a huge change in the mechanics of your running. By making a drastic change, you may be going against your body's natural mechanics and tendencies and end up hurting yourself more. However, if you are striking heavily on your heels than perhaps you can try landing just a little farther forward on your foot so you are striking your heel lightly. Another thinng you did not mention were your shoes. Have you been to a running store where they help fit you for shoes based on the mechanics of your running? I do not mean a big box sports store but a specialty running store. The wrong shoes or even worn shoes could definately cause the problems you are describing.

I tend to agree with Mango - your seat may be too comfortable. I always experience some pain when I first start riding again if it has been about a while since regular rides. It usually feels like bruising on my sitz bones but subsides after about a week or so of riding. I have learned that a low profile saddle is often preferrable to a "comfort" saddle. You did not mention the size of your seat so I could be way off but a saddle should be just wide enough to support your bones but not much wider. Also, the angle of your seat horizontally could be part of the problem as well. You can take your bike into a bike shop and have them adjust your seat for you to help eliminate some pain and fit you for a new saddle of that is indeed the problem. I find it strange that you are riding your bike so much and still getting pain. |

| Weight Loss | I gained my weight back .....GREAT. | Jul 20 2008 06:45 (UTC) |

Sometimes I wonder if our binges are because we have been depriving ourselves of too much. IDK just a thought. I lost fifty pounds from Jan 2007 to July 2007 and I did pretty well maintaining it for about 7 months and then the scale started to creep back up. I gained 15 pounds before I had to just take myself in hand and loose it. The thing that helped me is telling myself that I had worked too hard for too long to throw it away and give into old habits. It was hard to go back to counting calories and trying to lose weight and I felt humbled but you have to do it. That is what a lifestyle change is about - persistence. Take it one day at a time - you can do this. When the time is right and you have the motivation you will do this. |

HRM from an earlier post stands for Heart Rate Monitor. I use one when I run and bike and I find it very motivating. I set my weight and height and then during exercise it monitors my heart rate and gives me an estimate of calories burned. I have a polar F11 which I bought on Ebay for about $70. It is a little bit of overkill with the features and I could probably get everything I need out of the Polar F6. If you are a gadget kind of guy and decide to get a HR monitor, I would definitely suggest one with a chest strap instead of the ones you have to stop execising and take your pulse periodically. Just a suggestion to help you get a more accurate handle on your calories burned. My best estimates on CC are always much higher than what the HR monitor comes up with. |

I thought this link might be helpful to you. I wear cool-max socks when I run and have never gotten a blister in them but they can be pricey. You can buy a "grab bag" assortment of left over socks from races and such on amazon.com. The only down side is your socks won't necessarily match your clothes but I personally don't care if my socks match when I am running. http://www.amazon.com/PAIRS-Stretch-Fit-Athle tic-LongsCycle/dp/B000NI4YKQ/ref=pd_sim_sg_1 |

| Weight Loss | Eating healthy... yet not losing a lb.! | Jul 05 2008 16:00 (UTC) |
|
If you have gone from doing no cardio to cardio three times a week you will gain more muscle that you had before. You do not have to lift weights to build muscle. As for the scale dropping, you said you were eating healthy but you didn't mention how much. The concept behind losing wight is simple even if practicing it is not: eat less than you burn. Maybe you need to take a look at the number of calories you are eating and adjust. When I first started losing weight I was watching calories and working out and I was losing okay but then aout a month into it I started carring a liter water bottle with me and drinking three of those a day and the weight started flying off. The only change I needed to make was drinking more water. My point is there could be a small thing you need to change/adjust and it will start happening. |

I like Body Glide, lighter than vaseline and better for running than shorts to your knees. It will last through a 40-50 minute run for me. The other benefit is that I can put it on my feet on the spots I tend to blister. I also get a little chafing on my under arms if I run in a tank or sports bra, not it the pits but toward the front where they rub as I stride and body glide fixes that too. |

| Fitness | Dog attack | Jan 04 2008 19:16 (UTC) |

The situation with your husband sounds quite scary. I have never come across a dog quite so scary but I used to run out on county roads with quite a few homes and dogs but not many leashed or fenced dogs. I got a small can of pepper spray at Sportsman's warehouse that velcros around my palm ($8), I hardly know it is there while I am running. I only used it once on a dog that constantly came and nipped at my heels (never bit hard but made physical contact with me nonetheless). After that one time he has never chased or nipped at me again. Usually I would just talk to the owner of the dog but nobody was ever home at this particular house. I don't think this would have worked with the dog that attacked your husband but it worked fine in my situation and didn't do permanent or serious damage to the dog. |

Hi all! I have been running around (not on foot) like a crazy person for the past few weeks and while I have miles I did not post here I can't even remember when and how much I ran. In excellent new year form however I have resolved to get back to a somewhat regular running schedule of 4 runs per week. I started this morning with a 3 mile treadmill run. Have a happy new year everyone! |

| I lost about 50 pounds over the course of 6 months, no lose hanging skin here. Your skin should tightem up as you lose the weight. My advice would be to just eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated. If you do have some lose skin deal with it when the time comes. Wouldn't you rather have some lose skin then be overweight? | |||

greenkev: 14% body fat on a woman is sufficient to stop menstration. It took me years to get over what men want and move on to what I want. I want to look good for me and I realize that as a mother of two children my stomach will probably always be a little round. I am greatful that my dear husband appreciates the fact that I am a woman, I had his children and my body will never be the same. I know I am not the most attractive woman in the world but I can work to be the most attractive woman I can be. I think this is all any of us can do regardless of the women on the covers of magazines. P.S. round stomachs are natural on a woman. This doesn't mean flabby but rounded. |

| Maintaining | I need advices from maintainers! | Dec 11 2007 18:55 (UTC) |
7 |
All of the suggestions you have gotten have been wonderful, here is one thing to think about. If you are trying to maintain at one specific weight (112 pounds for example) you are going to drive yourself crazy. Try to maintain within a five pound range for example from 108 - 114, this will allow for the daily fluctuations and your appearance is not going to change from one to another. If you are getting above the high end, or below the low end of your range you know it is time to make adjustments in what you are doing. I got really tired of trying to lose earlier this summer, I was about 10 lbs above goal, so I decided to maintain for a while and then begin losing again. I maintained within a range like this and about a month ago started losing again. One thing I think is vital to maintaining weight loss is to weigh often. For me it is every day even when I know the scale is going to be high. This forced me to deal with my weight and my food choices every day. If I skipped a day with the scale, I found it easier to skip the next day and so on until I had not weighed for almost 2 weeks. If it is easier for you to weigh in every week then do that but make sure you know where you are on a regular basis and it will be easier to maintain you weight loss. Just my 2 cents, good luck and congrats on the weight loss! |

| Weight Loss | Help me understand Niacin.... | Dec 10 2007 21:34 (UTC) |
16 |
I was reading the information from the Wikipedia link and I found something, if I am reading correctly, that would actually make a case that large amounts of niacin (i.e. taking a niacin supplement) actually would make it harder to lose weight. "Niacin, when taken in large doses, blocks the breakdown of fats in adipose tissue, thus altering blood lipid levels." Adipose tissue is the tissue that actually stores our body fat so if Niacin blocks the breakdown of fats it could be harder to lose excess body fat if you are taking it. I am in no way a medical professional so I could be wrong, maybe somebody else knows. Niacin deficiency is very rare unless you eat corn as a main staple of your diet instead of rice or grain so I would think twice before taking it as a supplement. |

Happy weekend everyone! I just finished 3.5 miles on my treadmill right before bed. I really need to learn how to get up and get my run done in the morning. I'm just a night owl, the only problem is now that I have two darling children I get to wake up at 7 am regardless, they don't care that I function better at night. Oh well, at least tomorrow is Sunday and I can take it pretty easy. Zarelha - Congrats on the Indian summer day! I think it will be late March or early April before I see another day at 70 degrees. I personally think somewhere between 35 and 45 degrees is perfect as long as it is not windy. |

| The Lounge | bodybugg? Does anyone use one? | Dec 08 2007 18:07 (UTC) |
4 |
I haven't tried it myself but I have a friend that uses it. My opinion, it is a huge waste of money - There is nothing the body bugg does for you that you cannot do yourself by figuring out your allowance here, calorie counting, and using a heart rate monitor for exercise. I looked into the body bugg because it seemed like such a great idea but after doing some more research I found out the accuracy is around 80% - the same as calorie counting and using the activity browser to log exercise. I myself believe you can achieve higher accuracy than that for less money. You can buy a HR monitor for anywhere from abou $40 to $150. I use the Polar F11 which gives calories burned based on your HR, height, and weight. I lost almost 50 lbs from Jan 30 2007 to July 2007 doing this. |

Please add 3 miles for me tonight, did a 5k at the fastest pace I could maintain, managed 31:40. I keep thinking I should be faster since I have such long legs but I don't have time to really "train" Zarelha: I hear you on the treadmill boredom but I have been setting my incline at no lower than 2% but usually around 3% and then pushing as hard as I can. I live in a really hilly area so I figure if I am trapped inside by the cold I can at least "emerge" in the spring faster and stronger. Jenka: Great to hear you fixed your problem with a new water bottle. I hate cramps, I haven't figured out how to run through a stitch yet. Phord: Welcome, I'm pretty new at this too but it has been motivating. |
