| Foods | Veggie burgers or Turkey Burgers? | Jan 11 2009 13:42 (UTC) |

I second GI Jane. I think any frozen, boxed burger whether it be made of turkey or veggies is going to be second to any homemade burger, as they're usually infused with tons of salt and preservatives. I've made really amazing turkey and veggie burgers at home and don't feel that one was nutritionally better than the other. Even homemade beef burgers, since you can control how big they are and what you're putting in them, aren't that bad...beef can be very nutritious as a source of vitamins and nutrients. My favorite turkey burger is these spicy southwest turkey burgers: http://caloriecount.about.com/spicy-southwest -turkey-burgers-recipe-r161198 And my favorite veggie burgers are these middle eastern bean burgers: http://caloriecount.about.com/middle-eastern- bean-burgers-recipe-r126053 |

I agree with tetramerces. Since you're not actually ingesting the product, the calories are probably negligible (0-10) or non-existent. My rule with tea is that if it comes in a tea bag, its 0 cals. The only flavored tea I've come across with calories is the powdered chai stuff. |

I love mixing 1/2 cup yogurt (either greek, french vanilla, anything really) with either 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce or pureed pumpkin, a packet of splenda and some cinnamon. Tastes SOOO good and is SOOO filling. A great snack. |

There are a few things that don't sound too bad: chicken lucia, chicken marsala, frutti di mare pasta, linguine con vongole in a red sauce, grilled filet of salmon, haddock fra diavolo, pasta primavera with aglio e olio. If you want to stay away from carbs, then the chicken or the salmon are probably your best bet. Just remember, if portions are large, just eat half and take the rest home, that way you are AT MOST eating 500cal, which is pretty manageable. |

I'm about 5'3, weigh in and around 110. I exercise 6 days a week, eat about 2100 calories a day. Slightly less during the week so that I can eat slightly more on fri/sat and not worry about it. |

| I have a feeling that they re-analyzed the calorie content and found that it was 80 and not 60 and are trying to draw your attention away from it with the new label....and so yes the 60 cal ones will be phased out. it's just a guess though. | |||

| hey oink,
i totally know what you mean about the triggering comments. i am seeing a lot of relatives lately who i havent seen in a year and, considering the fact that i was 50 lb heavier a year ago, they are all telling me oh wow, you look so great and skinny, making me feel vindicated about what i have done. and, although i am much healthier now, i know that mentally i am still a slight wreck (although i have my good days and bad days) and hearing these comments makes me think, okay if they say i look good then maybe i dont need to gain after all, etc. i also still see myself as a "fat girl", which is really hard. i see girls on the street and think, wow they are so skinny and then i realize that we probably wear the same size pants. i think that mental distortion makes the process that much harder. as for eating and not binging, i always try to take portion out what i want from the container, then put it away and leave the room before i start eating. this way, i'll have to make htat much more of an effort if i want to get more and, usually, once i leave the room, the desire to binge goes away. having little bits of trigger foods also helps because then it staves off the intense craving. good luck! |

| hey linny,
i completely know what you mean, especially about letting the scale determine your mood every day and feeling like everything is spiraling out of control. ive had a bad past two weeks where, through bloating and other such food "retention" i saw the scale just continuing going up and it was hard to stop myself from restricting, even just a little bit (a few 100 cals). i wonder sometimes if i'm always going to do this...see myself go above 110, which is my comfort weight, and then restrict to get back down to 108 or so, etc. not to mention that i'm going to my aunt and uncle's house today, and then out to dinner tomorrow, and so i'm kind of freaking out about food since it will be out of my control. i'm sorry, this isn't very uplifting. maybe you are just gaining muscle though (thats what i always tell myself :p). i mean, if your clothes still fit the same then that is probably the case. from your pictures, you look AMAZING, btw. i guess my best advice is to just take everything one day at a time, and try not to think about it too much. i know that when i think about weight gain at all, i drive myself crazy, so i try to dissociate from it and just say to myself, okay we'll see what number appears on the scale tomorrow. i'm not sure where these perfectionist tendencies come from either, and even though its hard, we need to remind ourselves that the truly "perfect" person would not be underweight or ruthlessly counting calories and overexerting themselves, but instead would be happy with who they are and carefree, so maybe that is what we should strive for instead. good luck! |

| hey lala,
i think that you are allowed to burn as many calories as you are willing to eat back. so if it will make you feel better to work off 300 calories, then make sure you are eating enough to compensate. i know that for me, i would go insane if i couldnt run, so i didnt really change my exercise routine that much from ED, i just started eating more. it is DEFINITELY okay to be eating more sugar and fat. our ED selves tend to think that we should eat as little sugar and fat as possible which ISN'T true. especially if you are increasing your calories, you need more sugar and fats...sugar for energy and fats for all of the many processes that use fat in your body...like hair growth, nail growth, beautiful skin, your cell membranes, etc. avocadoes, nuts, and olive oil all have good healthy fats. as for sugar, it is probably better to eat less processed sugary foods (i.e. donuts) than fruits and vegetables. but if you are eating a lot, it becomes hard to eat only "natural" sugars because they tend to be in low calorie foods. i have ice cream every day as a way to get my calories up, and yes it is very sugary and has some fat in it but i'm also getting lots of calcium. you just want to have a balance. good luck |

| Weight Gain | What happened? | Jun 23 2008 03:38 (UTC) |
|
| what i've found, being post-anorexic, is that i need to eat substantially more than other people in order to maintain my weight. so even if i mimicked the people around me in my eating, i would probably still not be eating enough. also, if you ate a lot of rich foods (i.e. dessert), which you haven't had in a while, your body could have "forgotten" how to process them and so didn't really use the calories in them.
the best thing to do is just get back on the wagon now that you're home and regain whatever you lost. i know its frustrating but good luck! |

| hi guys,
i was really afraid that i wouldn't be able to maintain either once i got here and i had many breakdowns along the way where i would call my best friend crying about how scared i was. as some time went by i realized i was more in control than i thought i was, and it seemed that the more i ate and let myself relax a little, the more the ED thoughts stopped. its important to remember that "normal" people usually eat what they want all the time...sometimes they're a little less, sometimes a little more which is how they maintain. a big part of ED, at least for me, was fooling myself into thinking that i would gain TONS of weight from eating ONE cheeseburger or ONE meal at a restaurant while still exercising. i realize now that that's unrealistic and that as long as opt for healthier things 90% of the time, i'm allowed to have that less healthy 10%. |

| hey everyone,
i've been maintaining in and around 108-109 right now at 2300 calories/day. i exercise every day. i find that the second i eat under 2300 i lose precipitously, even if its just a few hundred calories, i see a drop of at least a lb. the next day. similarly, if i eat late the night before or have a lot of salt, i often see a gain the next day, but it always comes back down. my original GW was 115 (i'm 5'3") but i think that for my own mental sanity, i'm going to stay here for a while and try to let the weight redistribute. i'm not underweight, so i think this is fine. miss magill and linny, you guys are really inspiring to me. you have worked through so much and i hope that someday i can get to the place where you guys are. the way i see it is that i just have to take it one step at a time. |

| gibbit, you know how weight losers are always complaining about plateaus...well maybe you're at a weight gaining plateau in which your body is just trying to redistribute the weight more proportionally before it gains more! just an...optimistic...though.

| the thing that's really helped me with the pregnant looking thing is switching off weeks between 2600 and 2300 calories. the 2600 to gain and the 2300 to maintain. also, weight training and protein shakes afterwards (calories AND muscles). the week of maintenance really helps me mentally because i feel like i get to debloat for a week and help the weight to redistribute from my stomach to other parts of my body. probably not true and mostly in my head, but whatever works right. | |||

| well, bread and other complex carbs are really calorie dense and also tend to be things that people crave. fruits have simple sugars, which are "addictive" in the sense that once you have one bite you crave more. maybe that's why? | |||

| carmen, i know its scary and hard but i really believe that if you increased your calories to, say, 1800 you would stop seeing weight gain. you're right, 1200-1400 IS too little to be gaining weight but its also probably still not enough for your body to function correctly. so many girls on here post about gaining at really low calorie levels and then eating more and losing at really high calorie levels and i think that is what's going on here. my advice: increase to 1800 for a week and see what happens.
i'm sorry all of you guys have been having such hard weeks! i have been okay...i've been doing this cycling calorie thing where i gain on 2600 for a week and then maintain on 2300 for a week to try to give my body a break from all of the eating and allow the weight to redistribute so i dont feel so bloated. its been working pretty well. i've also relaxed a little about exercise and even went a day last week without going to the gym. and i didnt freak out! (well, maybe a little but i dealt). lets all try to have really great weeks this week with LOTS of eating and as LITTLE amounts of stressing as possible. |

| from what i've read about all this, your body will continue to gain at this low level of calories because its still afraid that you are going to stop feeding it again. your metabolism would probably increase if you upped your calories more and then you would stop gaining on this because your body would be assured that you weren't going to starve it again. | |||
| Weight Gain | eating smaller meals a day. how? | Jun 02 2008 23:09 (UTC) |
1 |
| for a while you will get full on these smaller meals because your stomach has shrunk, but you have to accept that if you want to gain weight you will probably have to eat even when you are not hungry. eventually, though, you will train yourself to be hungry every few hours or so. but, i guarantee you, if i never ate when i was full...i probably would never make it to my calorie needs. | |||
| Health & Support | can't do it anymore. *vent | Jun 02 2008 13:41 (UTC) |

| I agree with the previous posts. I don't know whether or not you've incorporated exercising back into your schedule but since counting and lowering calories will probably be triggering, then upping the exercising is probably the easiest and most healthiest thing to do. if you at least find a level to maintain at, then the weight you've gained will eventually redistribute itself around your body and/or will turn into muscle, which will make you look more toned. i know how hard all of this is. i'm trying to do the weight gain thing as slowly as possible since i'm not at a seriously unhealthy weight and i want to have more control over it, and even though i've only gained 2.6 lb. so far, I still freak out almost daily. congrats for coming this far..from your more recent pictures, you look amazing! | |||

| if any of these "high calorie joints" are food chains (the olive garden, applebee's, TGIF, etc.) then ny now requires them to put the calorie info on their menus!
at any italian place, you can always go for pasta with marinara sauce even spaghetti with meatballs won't run you TOO high. or any kind of chicken/turkey dish without any breading or tons of cheese. at a steak place, there is usually a 6 oz. option which only runs about 350 in calories. ny (manhattan, specifically) is a pretty health conscious place and most places offer some low-in-cal helathier options. but, yeah, if you know of anywhere specifically, that would help. |

| Health & Support | Can i really say im in recovery if... | May 28 2008 23:19 (UTC) |

| i think that all recoverers on some level are afraid to gain weight, and all that means is that we are (a) normal because most people don't want to gain weight (we're only abnormal because we're afraid of gaining weight even though we are ridiculously underweight) and (b) are still in the process of recovering. the most important thing to remember, though, is that we're not going to fix all of the psychological problems behind anorexia even after the physical problems are solved. some of them might never be solved, for all i know. i think the fact that you are asking yourself these questions, though, is a sign of recovery working its magic. just keep doing what you're doing and try to take it all one day at a time. i know that every day i meet my calorie goal and fight myself to not restrict is a successful day for me and i go to bed happy. i am seriously afraid of gaining weight but i know i have to do it anyway, and i think thats what we have to do until the day comes we can look in the mirror and see how beautiful we really are. | |||

| i had a similar problem when i started eating much more. the thing that really helped me was to just continually drink water. we are talking like 24/7 drinking here. it feels really uncomfortable that first day while you still feel bloated, etc. but by the second day everything felt MUCH better. its really hard to not feel like restricting when you feel bloated/gross all the time but i swear the water REALLY helped. | |||

| i had been getting my period normally while I was on the birth control pill. As soon as I went off it, my period stopped for three months. I was frantic and went back on it again for a week, and lo and behold a week later my period appeared even though i was then at my low weight (this was at the VERY beginning of my recovery). I've also heard of people eating LOTS of fats to get it to come back. When you'll get it again is different for everyone and depends on how your body responds to the percentage of fat in body...if its too low you won't get your period. I've also heard that the hormones in soy products helps. | |||

| my best memory so far was actually just two days ago. i do research in a research lab at school and have worked with the same girl for the past three years. she, however, is moving across the country to be a professor at berkeley. to say goodbye, she planned a surprise evening out together. this evening consisted of us going to a hotel lounge and having coffee and dessert together and talking for a few hours. it was an anorexic's worst nightmare. but for the first time in a long time, i didnt try to calculate how many calories i had. my chest didn't tighten at the thought of having dessert. i felt normal for the first time in a long time. | |||

| at 5'6" I guarantee that at 105 you will not have fat hanging every which way. i am 5'3 and 108 and am still ridiculously tiny/slightly sickly looking.
try to drink your calories as opposed to eating them if you're worried about feeling full. make a huge milkshake with bananas, pb, nutella, protein powder, cottage cheese, yogurt, strawberries, blueberries...whatever you want and sip it throughout the day. eat nuts and avocadoes which are very high in calories but not in volume. also, nut butters are really great because 2 tbsp is about 200 calories. pour olive oil on top of your 1/4 cup of carrots. grab a protein bar. as for calories, try to start at 1200 and then work your way up by about 200 calories a day until you reach at least 3000. good luck and if you have any questions feel free to message me. joanne |
