| I am going through a very simular thing in my Chemistry class right now! I have been very tempted to lay into the prof because he is a teacher that only people that have taken chemistry before understand. anyways one thing that i did was put a craigslist add up for a tutor, and i got a study group of people from other teachers and other schools in the same class to meet up. the advantage, they all have a different take on how things should be done so i can present my lab reports to others outside my class and get feedback. also gives everyone of us a chance to learn from each other and explain things in terms that make sense. I am currently getting something like a D in the class, there is 3 weeks left and i need it for my degree too, stick with it, meditate a little before doing homework and see about a study group. Ice is a good tool to use on acute injuries, however after several days (sub acute) it is better to use contrasting hot and cold, finally once you are in the chronic stage heat will be your friend. To understand what ice does you have to think about what you have observed when you get cold, i.e. the blood goes away from the site that gets cold (blue fingers in the snow for example). Ice shunts the old blood from the injury site allowing new fresh blood to come in and provide the essential nutrients for healing. One other thing to try and remember when you do have an injury is the acronym RICE Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate. Most medical professionals will advise you to follow the RICE concept because it is a proven method in injury recovery. through my own experience with injury I find that RICE has gotten me back into the game faster then anything else. Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate will be your best bet in an acute injury; however, compression in the case of the hip can be difficult. I see lots of hip injuries as an LMT (licensed massage therapist), what you are describing sounds close to what two other people on this post have already mentioned, Piriformis and IT band/Tensor Fascialate (TFL for short). While there could have been som bursitis the description sounds like soft tisseu; unfortunatly, without the ability to do an assessment of the structures i am limited in what i could advise you on. Something to keep in mind though is if you do have an injury to the soft tissue i.e. muscle tissue be careful not to over stretch it when you are still recovering. Pain and inflammation can be helped with NSAID's (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug), i.e. Advil or the like, always check with an MD or pharmacist about how much you should take. Also depending on where you live/go to school, check to see if there is a massage school near by, they usually have a clinic for students to work on people and offer massage at a considerable discount, just a though. hope that helps a little... |

Has anyone considered Chinese Medicine? Coldness can come from what acupuncturist will call Yang Deficiency. Yang is the counterpart to Yin and is responsible for warming and heat in the body, as diets change and we remove yang tonifing foods the body can get cold. I am not an acupuncturist, nor do i play one on TV, i do however have a small background in Chinese Medicine. If you do a Google search you will find tons of information on Yang and issues associated with deficiencies or abundances, you could also check with a Licensed Acupuncturist they will be able to give you much better details on Yang/Yin. I just wanted to post an alternitive on the cold feeling.
