ditto dearymetalsinks, you can try ordering a vegan soy protein powder from veganmall.com or something. i'm not vegan but many of my friends are protein is very important in gaining muscle and 1 lb of muscle will burn i think somewhere between 1-3 lbs of fat, even after you stop working out but muscle needs protein to eat from. and starving yourself like that your body is storing fat right now.

oxygen magazine is amazing!  i just subscribed after buying the issues for a couple of months. each month gives you a new routine or a couple of different ways of doing each excercise the only thing is i can't do barbell work on my own yet i find the length of a barbell to be kind of akward but i've found dumbells seem to work just fine in most cases. medicine ball crunches are the hardest!

if you still feel like you need to switch gyms after the great advice of everyone else which i say *ditto* then try a mom&pop gym if there are any in your area, i swapped to a locally owned gym its really small and the owners are the only ones who work there, if you don't got for a week or two they will call you and help you stay on track. that switch helped me stop losing motivation because i knew if i skipped out they'd be calling...

my biggest problems are on the weekend we stay with my boyfriends family who wouldn't know what fat free and fiber are if it bit them on the behind so i resort to junk food because that's all that's around but i've found chewing orbit gum in the new weird but good flavors lasts a long time and melon mint gum ruins the flavor of doritos! that seems to delay my cravings and we've also made a pact to go to the gym on both saturday and sunday or at least do something active on sunday instead of just sitting around just getting out of the house sometimes helps with the urge to eat.

as far as your father goes with his "checking out" theory i can guarentee you that boys are checking you out in class so does this mean that you should stop going to college? when i used those arguments with my father he usually backed down.  the only way he can prevent men from looking at you "that way" would be to send you to a convent. i think the only other way you can sway him is to maybe bring him to that gym during one of the family days, i'm assuming all colleges have family days where your folks go tour the school and meet your teachers. maybe if he actually saw the gym himself that might make him feel better, or you could maybe go with a friend he likes that might make him feel better too. my parents insisted if i went to a co-ed gym i had to carry pepper spray in my shoes.

i like a 50/50 blend salad greens and baby spinach with clemenines, craisins, toasted almonds, and grapefruit.

you can buy the grapefruit cut up and the organes cut up and emerald nuts and blue diamond nuts make toasted almonds. and i really like Ken's brand lite walnut and raspberry vinagrette. the vitamin C from the citrus helps your body absorb the iron in the spinach and the almonds give you some protein. oh and reducted fat feta is low in cal. has a good amount of protein and a nice salty bite to it.

a suggestion that works for me, someone with ibs since i was in diapers. spearamint tea traditional medicinals makes a good one that works for me, then i throw a nice hunk of fresh ginger let it steep for 10 min. covered and then sip slowly before and save a few sips for after you eat. that seems to work for me anyway. also have you tried rinsing your beans? i found that the liquid in canned beans is where most of the gases are so if you rinse and drain them thourghly before usuing them this minimizes the side effects.

you know what makes me bristle? i don't consider myself a feminist mostly because my goals in life are not to be at the top of some fancy corporate ladder or some cut-throat ****  my goals are to be a mother, there are still some of us who believe we are quite intelligent however just not career driven. call me crazy but i kind of like that image of being at home being the heart and soul of the family. i feel like that's where i'm happiest. now please a message to some hardcore feminists please don't take that out on me. by wanting to be a house wife i am in no way undermining my intelligence. so please back off and stop telling me i'm crazy!

my boyfriend's family loves cottage cheese plain. they put a big tub of it on the table at dinner i can't bring myself to eat it. i want to but everytime i try i gag, i think its a textural thing and the smell. just can't seem to get over the smell. but i did train myself to like reducted fat feta that has a nice bite to it :) i'd suggest feta or goat cheese for alternataves.

morningstar is what i swear by my family loves their recipe starters packages and use their "burger" crumbles instead of ground beef now. it took me a year and a half to become vegetarian. perhaps add back some meats and try it again slowly. also it takes a while for things to smell differently to you. in fact it takes 3 days before your nose really notices a new smell and becomes accustomed to it so maybe if you cooked with some of the meat replacements at home regularly that may "retrain" your vision and nose to what is palatable to you. worked for me anyway. also i read fast food nation and wanted nothing to do with eating animals after that no mater what the temptation at least you are aware of the suffering they go though. it also highlights the horrible lack of hygiene and the envrionmental impact of the meat industry on the planet.

when i miss cheese i sprinkle some nutritional yeast on instead it has a cheese flavor but is not animal sourced and is loaded with iron and b vitamins! i do eat cheese i'm not vegan i'm lacto-ovo vegetarian however, cheese and dairy unless on a strict limit do upset my stomach greatly so i try to limit them. and indulge every so often. usually the end result is i binge for a day and have to suffer the consiquences.

sorry for getting off-topic, nutritional yeast is a good cheese replacement. i highly reccomend the garden of vegan, and le dolce vegan by sarah kramer great cook books and you won't miss a single animal product trust me!

dreamer that's how i feel about hand-me downs and such.  if i'm invited to a resteraunt where there is nothing vegetarian on the menu save maybe a side dish and even then its questionable i'll ask for the chicken on the side and just eat the salad i figure they are going to charge me the same price anyway so i may as well let someone else eat the meat. and as for leather goods and such, i hate to see hand-me-downs and family heirlooms wasted because i don't support the leather or china industry. as far as food goes i think it is perfectly fine to refuse something that was made in error. as long as done so politely, with family i try to avoid the topic all together since no one seems to know what vegetarian means i just tell them no thank you my stomach is a little upset and proceed to eat the side dishes. that usually keeps people quiet and the evening moving smoothly.

i discovered morningstar recipe starters burger crumbles and introduced them to my family. well they liked them in my sloppy joes so much that now my mom buys them when we all eat together instead of real ground beef. who knew that a simple "hey try this tell me what you think?" could become a real turn around.

lacto-ovo vegetarian. i don't eat meat but i don't avoid cheese and milk products or eggs and yes i do cook them for myself but i will never buy eggs from battery caged hens i think that's so cruel. i stoped eating meat first for health and stomach reasons and it has kind of evolved somewhat. however i wouldn't consider myself strict because i'm with an omni/ carnivore and i will cook meatballs for him and i'll cook bacon for him but that doesn't mean i have to eat it. i figure if he's willing to eat my fake meat and tofu 90% of the time he deserves a little bit of meat if he wants it.

Vegetarian Cooking for a meat-eater - any suggestions? Nov 28 2007

in regards to the earlier comments about giving up fake meats. i live in an omnivore family and its easier to make meals in one pot rather than 5 so they have started integrating fake meat into their meals and i find that a quick veggie burger wrap makes a delicious protein packed sandwich that's healthy and quick. sometimes it is not all about the meat aspect of things but rather the  need a protein quick and do not want to actually eat meat. so naturally what are your next best options eggs which do not reheat well or fake meats.

i made shepards pie last night with morningstar "burger" crumbles and my boyfriend loved it hardly noticed the "meat" was fake

i use most of my fake meats cooking for my family. they like the taste of a lot of it espcially morningstar burger crumbles and for parents with high colesterol it make a great healthy alternative we can all eat together. not to mention it cuts down on the dishes that need to be done if we can all eat a meat replacement we like. for me it was about health and harmony living in a meat eating house hold these replacements make a great compromise that don't upset the balance of things

i suggest the book becoming vegan it outlines all the sources of your nutrients how much are in each bean, plant and fruit and grain and how to stay healthy and meet your requirements without eggs and dairy. i read it with my mom and she felt better after that usually people just need some more information/education. but since i got my own place and am on a tight budget i've added back eggs because i just wasen't getting enough protein and its quick cooking. if you can find them on your local farm i think that's better off most health food stores carry fresh locally grown eggs and milk.

Vegetarian Morningstar or Garden Burger? Nov 23 2007
20:00 (UTC)
because i'm on a budget i use the faux meats sparingly and usually use beans or tofu instead but. i love morningstar's bacon and crumble it into salads or eat on a egg sandwich and their meal starters are great already seasoned just add and go! i'm not really a huge boca fan but you could try them too if you want i think boca burgers smell and taste too much like real meat.
