It sounds like it could be that you're having some problems digesting your food correctly. Bloating with an apple is common, it's one of the more bloating foods (actually I've heard it's the peel) along with broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, beans, ect. It could be that the food is fermenting in your stomach because your enzymes are off (or something of the like), and then your abdominal muscles relax to allow for the pressure.. causing bloat. Which I have dealt with for over a year now. But I can look pregnant sometimes. A lot of the time. Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there. Beware- a medical doctor with throw the IBS-C (Irritable Bowel Constipation) label on you. A naturopath will be able to help you figure out what's going on and run tests if it becomes a constant problem for you. It could be because you're not regular, but you'll have to experiment more with that to see if you can change your diet with whole foods, veggies and fruit to get more regular. Or you can look into candida to see if that could be an issue for you, one of the symptoms is bloating because the bacteria in your intestines aren't balanced. Google it. I'm wanting to take ballet classes also and I'm not looking forward to that so you're not alone! Do an elimination diet for a few weeks and see if it helps... that's what I'd recommend. Google that too :) Alright I'm done. Good luck!! |

I'm excited to join this challenge! I'm 20, 5'8", and have fluctuated weight a lot within this past year and a half. I went from 145 to 125 last summer, and then in December 2007 I went from 130 to 157, my highest in June. I'm currently around 155-ish and wanting to get back down to 125. I need help staying committed, not bingeing, keeping a healthy mindset, and having regular exercise. I'm a cyclist, I jog, and I love to hike. Right now I'm spending my summer in Alaska and will be moving back down to Arizona in the winter after a long road trip... so lots of change in my life! I know how to eat healthy though, and I know how to lose the weight, I just need to keep on track! |

Thanks for your input, I appreciate your concern but this is one of the only sources that says a BMI of 19.0 is underweight. Everywhere else that's perfectly healthy and it's where I feel comfortable in my body. My bodies the boss, I'll be listening to it if I get hungry after the 1,200 are up. There many other factors that go into this such as being hypothyroid and in a location where I wont be able to exercise as much as I was hoping. Thanks, but I'm really just looking for cc buddies. |

Ah! So sorry guys, I had two weddings in a row and a house to pack, job to finish, boyfriend to be with, friends to say goodbye to, and no internet connection.
Last weigh in SW:153 CW:148 Total lost: 5 Pounds
I lost 5 pounds, and that's accomplishing something! Thanks to all of you who stuck through these 9 weeks. It has to feel good to do something from the beginning to the end, after all... we can see how many people did stick with us and it wasn't that many. I think we will all be just fine, because we're committed to being who and what we want and know we can be physically. Not to let food rule our lives, and to live in BALANCE. I'm getting there, and I'm excited for you guys too. Each pound lost is a pound closer!
Good luck to you all :) |

I looove cycling. Although I mainly do it outdoors on a road bike, I also have a trainer I set up inside in the winter or on a lazy day to be be cozy in front of the tv. Plus I have the hott cushioned spandex shorts so I can easily keep it up for a whole movie! I just did 80 miles around rural farmlands last week. The most I've EVER ridden! A piece of advice though... even if you've been riding for awhile make sure your muscles are trained up for that. On top of the long ride, intense strength training session, and 20 more miles, my legs are SHOT. Painful even for little boys to hug, which is hard cause I'm a nanny. "Ouch, ouch, ouch! You're hurting nanny!" Might get me some weird looks. Cycling rocks. On that ride I probably burned close to 3000 calories. Burn baby, burn!

| Fitness | Quad Cramping?!? | Jul 16 2008 16:57 (UTC) |
|
Oh- I have an answer for this one. If my muscles start to cramp or I go on a long bike ride or a couple hours at the gym, I'll take an electrolyte package with me and dump it into a bottle of water, shake it up, and wala- zero calorie and relieves a headache, muscle cramp, and gives me energy, all that having your electrolytes off will cause. They come in orange, lime, raspberry something something, and you can get them at a lot of different places. I think I got mine at whole foods last time, they come in what looks like emergen-c packets. Try this with one of your water bottles you exercise with, and then another later if your muscles are still cramping. Then stretch enough and you should be golden! |

Geoff... CONGRATS for not turning to alcohol. I don't even know you and I'm proud of you. It's dangerous that you went to food... but being aware of that is a huge step already and I think you know you need to find another outlet for your emotions. Pursue that and focus on being healthy and your miles ahead a big chunk of the population. You'll eat too much during a diet, you'll eat too much once in awhile when you're at your normal weight. The key is to let it go and give yourself grace. GRACE. You're working your butt off to loose this weight, you want to keep yourself from getting obsessive (believe me I know) so maybe this was good to give yourself a check. It could have been much, much worse. I hope that you could let it go in time to have a good evening. You didn't fail. You are working towards an amazing goal of taking responsibility for your body and your behavior. I'm impressed. Now on a different note: I'm leaving town until Wednesday for a cabin so I'm posting this a day early. Here's the link to the new weigh in: 20 Pounds by July 31st- Week 3 I'll try to burn off some calories running around the Alaskan old growth forests for a couple days! |

I finally have a minute to surf the web so I thought I'd come on here and see how everyone was doing. I'm officially now on "vacation" and loving being away from work and back home to the ocean. But I'm doing well and eating is in control. It can really be anywhere you go, but I understand now how hard it is when you're social eating! Will power, will power.
Anyways, I just wanted to encourage you guys!! I've been fluctuating in my weight as well as some of you and have been back up to 153 at one point... hate that deceiving water weight. So... we'll all see on tuesday!
Let's keep up the good work... in which I mean the good effort we put in :)

Hey everyone! Yes, tomorrow is official weigh-in day. The group will stay open until then and I'll ask a moderator to lock it after I create a new one and post the link. Then it's a closed group after that, and we're all on our way! People who want to leave the challenge can just not post in the new forum, and everyone else that's committed can let us know how they did! I'll try to have it up fairly early, but it might not be posted until 8:30 Pacific Time. Sounds like people are doing good and it's great to see people encouraging each other! Sorry I've been absent for awhile, crazy week for me and I was exhausted. Still going strong though and I can't wait to see our progress.
Oh- and maddie109, kuddos for signing up for a triathlon. I've personally never done one, but I'm a runner and I cycle. I think the most I've done is a 60+ mile day.. but that didn't include running or swimming. I did read you want to do some running and cycling in the same exercise routine to get your body adjusted to changing activities, and that it helps to cycle the rpm that is about the same you would run... but I never tried that and I'm sure you know that stuff already. I do know what helps train you fast on the bike when you have limited time is to make your easy days really easy and your hard days your serious training days. Do a few easy rides a week, and then a couple times a week really push yourself doing intervals. Make sure you let your body recover in between those workouts though, because if you do super hard intervals of like 20 seconds various times throughout your ride, than your body may not be able to recover if you don't go easy the next time. That's what has been passed onto me from a seasoned rider (I was lucky enough to learn the insides about cycling when I went on a ride through the Rockies with a group of them). Honestly, once you get those leg muscles strong you can easily go 20, 30 miles without it being hard at all. That's an easy ride to me, it's just that it's time consuming... about 2 hours at a moderate pace. So try to ease your miles up and do interval training are the best tips I can give you. As for nutrition, fueling right for your kind of training is very important. Before you exercise try to eat at least an hour ahead with a higher ratio of carbs... like oatmeal or cereal with some protein powder. Something like a banana could work too... but it would be better to have a banana with almond or peanut butter. Get the idea? You always want to have carbs and protein with some long burning fat, but you want more of the carbs. Don't worry, you'll still lose weight. Then the rule of thumb is for every hour on the bike, you need to give your body more fuel. This can be like a half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, gel, cliff bar shots, honey packets (which are my fav), or a energy power bar. I still try to keep my stuff organic without the extra stuff in them... just like how you've cut out processed food. I also always have stamina in my water, some form of electrolytes so my muscles don't cramp. Then when I get done you need to eat within 45 minutes and have a good mixture of carbs and proteins. I forget the amount of carbs you need, I think about 20-30g, but you need at least 10g of protein, I wouldn't be afraid to go higher. Alrighhhttt.. I think I've written more than you wanted to read! I hope you can pull a few sentences out of this to help you out. I'm training hard and still keeping my calories low and I feel great! The key is to eat small and frequently, that's what I've found helps me survive while exercising so much. Sounds like you're definitely on the right track, just remember not to do any cycling right before your ride so you give your muscles a good rest, and eat lots of carbs the night before. Like spaghetti and meat.. perfect ratio. Let me know if you have any more questions! Good luck! |

It's Wednesday, two days into our challenge! How's everyone doing....? Welcome new people :) Sounds like you guys are ready to kick some butt, and being accountable to everyone else like skinieminie12 said is kind of the idea of this whole thing... keep us on track. Youngrebel- Good idea about the new forum. If we tag it each week then we'll be able to keep track of our posts. How about at the end of each week I'll throw a new one up there and provide the link to everyone. That post with the link will be the last post in the individual forum, and we'll go to the next one until there are 9 of them. Then we'll be done! :) The only other idea I had is to start using Journals to organize this. Keep this as a main one, and then post a Journal every week and people can use the comments to leave their weight loss, motivation, ranting and raving, ect. Then it's all organized in one profile, with all the journals (weeks) right there. So I need opinions guys cause we're all in this together. Would you like to use a new forum every week and just recieve the link to that, or would you like to use the profile system? Let me know and I'll set it up. Colorado_sunshine- yay for family coming in August! That's my long term goal.. by the end of August I WILL be back to my goal weight. We can do it! Lucky for us they have to love our beautiful bodies anyway they look :) And I think you're doing awesome for having to juggle 5 kids. You're a hero. Hi Roze- nice have you join us. Are you in the Army? I'm from a military family so I'm familiar with their food. mmm ;) Have you ever thought of stress relief techniques? I just took a class on different tecniques to help throughout the day. It's amazing how our bodies react and how we can train them to not let our cortisol levels shoot through the roof. Good luck camping, just eat when you're hungry and a little less than you normally would and you'll be losing. You're body will take care of the rest... but if you're stressed it could inhibit it a bit so I hope you can take a little breather. ibii- we're about the exact same stats and goals. I weighed in 151 this morning, I'm 20, and 5'8". My long lost twin. nice to see someone with the same issues! a personal trainer I went to at the gym put me on the scale and as she read off my weight she was like, "I have no idea where you put it because I'd guess you were 130, 125." Ha.... 153, and I think that pounds 35-50 have found them selves a nice home on my belly. I hope they're enjoying themselves... because they WONT be sticking around any longer. It's frustrating, I envy people that can carry their weight so well while I want to go look for maternity clothes. And I agree on the carbs thing... If we deprive ourselves we are more likely to overeat them later to compensate. Basically, the only rule we have to live by in weight control is "Everything in Moderation." Have some carbs, but make sure each meal is balanced, your blood sugars are stable, you never overeat, and you try not to eat processed sugary foods that don't have much nutritional value. Before I put anything in my mouth I ask myself, "Is this going to be nutritious for my body" In other words, can my body actually use this... like white bread vrs sprouted 9 grain bread, or pasta with sauce vrs polenta and marinara. Like motivateme said, switch from simple to complex carbs and add good whole foods. Around 5 small meals a day, exercise as much as you can, and you're set. Ccloan- thanks for the suggestion about posting on Mondays. It's been planned for Tuesday because that's the day the challenge started and people began to sign up. If everyone would prefer Monday I'm fine with that, so if people have opinions please let us know. If not, we'll just keep it at Tuesday so it's consistant. Great idea about the utube videos lune_ash. I'm insanely busy, and the only time I find to work out is either 5:30 in the morning or after 8 or 10 at night. That might help.... Anyway guys, keep it up, you're doing great. Please give me your opinions to how to organize this group (and make it more of a concrete group) and when you actually do want the weigh in date. Also... if you're reading around the forum and you see people asking for help and you have an idea or something that worked for you, please start sharing with eachother! We need to be active in this as much as we can to stay motivated, and it will be hard for just me to answer peoples questions. Plus, some of you have different experiences or techniques that I don't have... so share, share, share! Keep focused on your goal!

Hey everyone, First, I'd love to talk with the people who are looking for some help and see if there's something you're missing in your regemin. Also, on a not so pleasant topic (like weight at all is anyway), a moderator found me and said we have to move our thread over to the Games and Challenges Forum. They should be coming on here and letting everyone know where they're putting it and how to access it... so don't worry! It will be the same just in a different location, we'll all tag it and be right back on track. Keep your chins up! |

Yes, join on up both of you! I have a dress I need to fit into for a wedding in a couple weeks... where I'll be seeing my boyfriend who is gone for the summer and also my sister who I only see a couple times a year. Love the motivation.
The result we're looking for anyway, is that we've just worked our hardest. If we reach 20 pounds, less, more, it doesn't matter. It's that we've worked hard and put our body and soul into something, and have results from it! But 20 is a good number ;) |

Wow, there's so many people that are joining in on this. I think it's great! Let's really help each other to stay focused and committed. I suggest that if we're not in contact with someone, add a few people with similar goals and start talking. Let's really try to get a little community of support going for the next 9 weeks... I think we all could use it.
In the meantime, yes -I think we've come to the conclusion that Tuesday will be the official weigh in day. It might be helpful to put a little summary of how we felt we did that week. No matter what guys, let's try to positive self talk our way through this... I know I need to quit thinking negatively about myself and that's easy to do when you're not happy with your body. Self talk is so powerful, and when my sister told me to start calling myself "sweetie" all the time I was completely repelled from the idea... but I realized she was right on. I need to do that so I love myself, so I want to take care of myself, and so that I have a healthy self to share with other people. Guys... you can come up with a different nickname than sweetie or dear. :)
Geoff, congrats on starting in on getting healthier!! Even losing 5 or 10 or 2 pounds is proof that you have the strength to do this. Bostonshelly... of course we'll have you! A little push is always helpful. Bride2be08- congrats! Sounds like you're right on track, I'm impressed with your workout schedule... and everyone else that's in classes or hitting the gym up regularly. Jacquimoni- you are NOT alone. Just look at us all, glad you've joined.
Oliverio- if you'd like some help with figuring out why you haven't been losing, feel free to message me or anyone else on here and we can try and help! We'd need to know what you usually eat daily, exercise, and anything like that. I'm sure there's a reason. I've been doing this for awhile so maybe I'll have some tips that will help you out!
Broadway519- you can do it! Let us know if you ever need any help, tips, or just support or a kick in the butt to get going :) God knows I need that sometimes.
G1rl79- You completely have support. My support anyway! I know that those last pounds can be stubborn so just don't give up and if you ever get stuck just start switching stuff around and change your exercise intensity. That's always helped me.
Wow michaelinitaly.... I'm impressed. I'm not eating as many veggies as you are, that's always a good reminder to do. I think all of our bodies are different and when we have more body fat we loose quicker... I don't know why a monitor would remove a post about your personal experience. Sounds healthy to me! If that's all your body needs, why give it more when it's trying to use it's extra storage up? Congrats! You must feel awesome with that behind you.
lune_ash... commit, commit, commit! You have the responsibility to take care of your body. I have family coming in August and I want to be back to my normal weight. The pressure is ONNNN. Not that they don't already love me. I just don't like being chubby.
Daniski, mkculs, and regretfullybliss... that's what I'm trying to figure out. I'm thinking if we get more involved and start talking everyday that will help. The only thing is that it can get messy on here, so I'm looking into using a blog site to organize things so we can use it along with this. I'll let you know how that goes. Any ideas are welcome, but I think we definitely need more than just a "weigh in date."
Good luck everyone!! It's great to see so many people who are ready to band together and get to our goals. We're not the only ones struggling, and it's nice to have a reminder of that.
If anyone has questions, please feel free to let me know!
Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday! If you have to get a jumprope out to exercise do it. Let's get our bodies moving and only give them what they need... no more! I work around kids all day and that means being around food all day... a lot of sugary simple foods. Yesterday I did awesome- I didn't eat anything extra! It CAN be done.

ibez, yes it is more than 2 lbs per week.
There are 65 days until July 31st, so 9.29 weeks. If someone lost 2 pounds per week that would be 18.58 pounds, so we're only talking about less than 1.5 more. That means if my numbers are correct that you'd loose 0.31 pounds per day, instead of the "healthy" 0.29. I don't think being 0.02 off for 9 weeks will do harm. As for the deficit, each person is different and for someone with a daily expenditure of 2,000 and an added 500 at the gym... meaning expending 2,500 total and eating 1,200. That's well past the deficit you need and in 9.29 weeks one would lose 24.15 lbs if we went by the numbers. Thanks for being concerned, I wouldn't want to promote something unhealthy. Some people can do this and some can't, and like some already have they can choose their own goal that's best for them.

Congrats on the engagement charityjoy, that's some serious motivation :) I'm also a complete romantic so I don't blame you wanting to be the best you can be for your man. Kind of one of my motivations in a way also. And lovelymom23... that will be awesome to get under 200, definitely a defining moment when you step on that scale. Not that we should live by scales... And everyone else, I'm glad that you're in.. even if this is your ending weight goal, or just a chunk of it -a big chunk! This is exciting! I know just after one week we'll have so much motivation seeing the changes in our bodies, especially with some visits to the gym added in there. We need to do this for ourselves, and to be able to offer our best to our loved ones and the people around us. Not letting food control us, but just finding the natural weight we were made to be.
Let's share our game plan, stats, and any ideas or tips we have!
Then we can weigh in next Tuesday....or the two week mark. What do you guys think? |
