Fitness Help, I've lost all motivation to exercise! How do I get it back? Sep 07 2008

i can relate completely!  For around 5 years I was a hardcore gym bunny, i exercised 5 to 6 days a week.  I think I even overdid it a lot of the time.

I then started counting calories and still exercising and lost all the weight I wanted.  I was ok till I moved in to a building with a gym so I canceled my gym membership.

You would think it would be now easier to exercise but no!!  I've lost a lot of motivation to exercise , I still go to weight train a little at my building gym but I stopped doing cardio all together.  Lately i don't even strength train.

I started taking individual aerobic and spinning classes at this neighborhood gym which doesn't require a membership so that's something but it's only once or twice a week.

I had a great body for about a year when I was doing the strength training and cardio and it was great.  But let me tell you it took a lot of work!!

Right now i still look ok and i'm at my ideal weight but I'm nowhere near as cut as I was. Just thinking about all the work it took to look like that makes me not want to do it.  I think I need to find a middle ground and that's what I'm trying to do now.

Hi heavenly body

while I have never used a shower seat i have helped many clients acquire them and showed them how to use it.  I am  a physical therapist and work mostly with children but on occasion i have worked with bariatric cases.  I think a shower chair is a great idea for you, remember the most important thing is safety and comfort.

If you don't want to buy a new one you might find one in a thrift store especially those that are linked to retirement communities since people often pass away and leave walkers, shower chairs etc.

Good luck

Fitness Hip Replacement What Exercises can I do ? Sep 17 2007

As a physical therapist, i'm sorry that you did not get the treatment you deserved.  I strongly suggest you look for another physical therapist that can help you.  With your extent of injury a trainer is not really recommended since they don't have the preparation to make sure you don't hurt yourself

A good therapist will give you a solid exercise program and assess your current status as well as give you any precautions.  A rule of thumb is no hip flexion over 90 degrees but this only applies to 6 months to a year after the replacement. Again a good ortho pt is your best bet.

I second the recommendation for swimming, you may have a public community pool near you in a local park.  If you are dead set against it I would recommend walking for now and work from there.  You can do this on a treadmill or outdoors, the elliptical machine should also be safe as long as you don't put the ramp up too high making your hip flex too much

Good luck and if you have any specific questions feel free to contact me

Fitness Belly Dance anyone? Sep 11 2007
03:59 (UTC)
Belly dancing is wonderful and I consider it a light aerobic workout.  It also makes you feel extra sexy.  The only downside is that once you get good and develop the flexibility needed to perform those moves you must keep at it.  If you stop bellydancing for a while your stomach will sag and create a very particular look to it.  Ask any indian or middle eastern person and they will tell you this if you don't believe me.

I agree with this article, and I speak from personal experience.  I used to be a big time cardio queen.  I would take step, dance, do elliptical, bike, etc.  I was in awesome cardiovascular shape and while I was pretty slim , I was not completely happy with my body.
Now, I do about 3 weight training sessions a week with free weights and a barbell and the difference in my body is astounding.  Every single person I know has commented  on how good I look.  My clothes fit a ton better and my body fat has go down a bit.

I still do a cardio, especially swimming and dance cuz i like those but I will never go back to the old ways.  I felt that I was working longer periods and sweating like crazy and the results were just not there.

I'm in maintainance mode and this and I think that's sufficient.  I usually do 2x/wk of weight training and 2x/wk of cardio.  I know that they recommend more cardio but this has worked for me.  My job is relatively active though.  Good luck!

This is true jess.
I did not need a lot of weight to lose only like 15 pounds or so, after the first 10 pounds everyone raved about it especially in my gym and stuff.  Now i'm at what I believe is my ideal weight which is  130-132 pounds on a 5-7 frame.  I am now getting comments like,  "wow you've lost a lot of weight maybe you need to start eating a bit more":, or "you need to put a little bit of mass on'"
I usually respond with , yes thank  you I'm not trying to lose more weight i'm just working on getting stronger'

It seems like if you reach a good weight and look skinny and fit people start to feel threatened by you, i don't know!

Like everyone else says you just have to be clever around these people.  It's almost always because they feel inadequate around a person who seems to be living their life healthy.  They often just want to bring you down to their level so they can feel better about themselves.
I usually just say ' why is it important to you what I eat?, in a firm but calm tone.
Fitness strength training Jul 22 2007

I completely agree with everyone here about the importance of weigth training. I was a cardio queen for a long time before I finally saw the light and added weight training.  I basically just do the basics lifts like squats, deadlifts, lunges, bent over rows, etc.  It is more than enough to make you nice and strong and I never use the machines just free weights or a barbell.

I do have a question about the protein though, how much is really recommended after a workout??  Also can you give examples in real food such as an egg, such amount of cheese, etc??

My stomach is quite sensitive and I don't want to give it those powders, i'm very suspicious of anything that is not natural.  I have IBS and a host of other related conditions and watch what I put in my mouth  very closely to avoid flares and such.
Fitness Allergies and exercising Jul 20 2007

Hi

It's actually not that uncommon to develop allergies at a later age.  I only started having allergies at around age 26 I would say and they started during a trip to europe where I was walking around a lot.  I guess some strange pollen triggered them and I've had them ever since.
They do get worse at a park or some outside venue so I'm pretty sure they are pollen related.  I've never had them specifically tested but my MD told me to take Claritin and such.  I only take it if I       &n bsp;        ;    fell especially stuffed up.
good luck

saying that americans and brits speak the same language is like saying that someone from spain who speaks beautiful catilion spanish speaks the same language as a mexican!

wrong-o!

first of all the term is castillian, second your comment is somewhat offensive.  Spanish just like the British are capable of completely butchering the Spanish language with tons of slang.  Mexicans and other Latin Americans are also capable of of speaking beautiful Spanish. The first time I went to Spain I had to use all of my concentration to understand some of the  young people there and I am a native Spanish speaker.  No, I'm not  from Mexico ;)
And finally who cares if some terms are translated??  As long as kids are reading it's fine by me!

Fitness any ideas for making weights/squats and lunges.. fun? Jun 26 2007
03:38 (UTC)
i don't know if you belong to a gym or not but if you do try one of their group classes where they do weights.  I know most of the big chains like bally's and la fitness have such classes. I got to one called powerflex where you do squats, lunges, deadlifts, etc with a barbell and weights.  It's really good because as you progress you can add weights and the teacher is there to correct your form. Good luck!!

Weight Loss do calories really matter? Jun 22 2007

I gotta agree with everyone here. I've always been slim but at one point I gained about 15 pounds over the course of 3 years despite going to the gym 4 times  a week.  Once I started counting calories I realized I was eating about 200-300 above my allowance and this totally explained my slow but steady weight gain despite my exercise.

I love rice and I eat it everyday. Like someone else said you just have to watch out  your portion size.  For brown rice avoid the supermarket brands, that rice tastes horrible!  If you have access to a chinese or japanese market buy your brown rice there.  They have the small and medium grain variety and for some reason it just tastes so much better.

thanks all for your replies.  Like I stated before an orthopedic doctor told me to not run but doctors don't always know everything.  I should know since I work in healthcare.  For now I think I will continue with my other exercises though and just run while i'm dreaming i guess.  I wouldn't want to get that horrible back pain I had for close to two years.  Thanks all and good luck with your running.
Fitness Learn to Run - Who wants to do this with me?? Jun 10 2007

Hello everyone

Well, here's my story, I've always wanted to run cuz I feel it's the best exercise out there. I'm fairly fit as I do cardio regularly either in the elliptical or in aerobics classes.  I am 30 years old 5'8 and weigh 135 pounds, I don't know if this matters but I put it in anyways.

Anyways, the problem is I've never felt comfortable running, it always feels very awkward for me ever since I was a child.  I have very flat feet and I remember when I was in high school and we were practicing for the mile I got horrible knee pains at 15 years of age. I went to the doctor and he told me not to run for any length of time ever!! I had a note and was excused from the mile run.

Ever since then I've pretty much not run very much even though I love exercise and go to the gym regularly.  Like I said i really like the idea of running but I'm basically scared to do it.  I've had back problems as well in the past but my back has not bothered me in recent years. I've heard that the pounding of running can really do ao number on your back.  Also in my case it is more so since I don't have any shock absorption from my flat feet.  This is what the dr told me anyways.

My question is can I overcome this and run?? does anyone here have flat feet and have accomplished running without too much pain??  What type of shoes would be best??  The few times in the past that I have run I've gotten horrible shin splints and some back soreness .

I hope someone out there has been able to overcome this

thanks in advance

While I feel many people in this site do exaggerate starvation mode, like the above poster mentioned your lack of manners and pettiness is really unbelivable.
As a physical therapist who has also taken a lot of those ' advanced courses' you talk about I can only thank God that you did not become a PT because I wouldn't want you to treat any patient with the attitude you portray.
I only hope you reconsider the way you express yourself

Hi :

I love dancing too since I'm latin like you!  If you want that club feel in the gym why don't you take a Zumba class?  they have them now in most states.  Some gyms also offer a cardio salsa or latin dance aerobics class.  Dance and spinning is all I do for cardio since I just hate the machines ( they are too boring for me)  check it out, if you are already a dancer the steps won't be hard to pick up

Hi alex

I'm a disney nut so I can help you.  Disney has actually gotten a lot better about offering healthy food in the parks.  There are now fruit stands especially in Magic Kingdom where you can buy fresh cut fruit.

If you are eating at the quick service restaurants you can substitue baby carrots for fries at many of them, don't know what to tell you about the hamburger though ;).

If you are eating at a sit down restaurant then they will accomodate to any request you have.  If you want more info on disney and the  dining options go to this website  www.disboards.com and then head on to the dining area.   Have fun!!!!
