| Vegetarian | Why is vegetarian healthier? | Sep 12 2009 17:11 (UTC) |

Even if you are eating a lot of veggie "meats" that are around the same calories as the meat it's imitating, I bet the veggie option has significantly less fat and cholesterol in it. If you look at real bacon vs soy bacon, for example, the fat and cholesterol in the soy version will be significantly lower. I think the benefit comes from the fact that vegetarians tend to eat foods with lower cholesterol and fat levels along with more healthy things like fruits and veggies. |

That is inappropriate - if I were you I would talk to HR about how to handle the situation. You're not being sensitive. He is creepy and inappropriate and probably says things like this to other people. If he says something again, tell him that is extremely inappropriate and unprofessional and then talk to HR asap. |

Yes, it can cause sinus infections, you should mention it to your doctor. There may be some sort of allergy shot they can give you, but you will probably need to get rid of the mold or move out if you can't. |

| Fitness | what comes first - toes or heel ... while running ??? Please help | Jun 14 2009 19:47 (UTC) |
9 |
Eh, I think you can just do whatever is comfortable for you. I think it's generally better to run on your toes, but I read a book on running where the author talked about this and he said he usually ran on his heels despite that. For me, it's more comfortable to run on my toes - otherwise I get shin splits. That guy kind of sounds like a jerk. :P |

| Weight Loss | Scale not budging, but the measuring tape is???? | Jun 14 2009 17:49 (UTC) |

You're probably building muscle - muscle weighs more than fat, so you could be both losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time. It's normal and having the measurements change is a great thing! :) |

| Weight Loss | What is your shoulder width? | Jun 14 2009 17:45 (UTC) |
|
Having wide shoulders is a good thing! If you look at fashion models, they tend to have wide shoulders, plus wide shoulders give you kind of an hourglass shape because they make your torso look narrower in comparison. Why do you think people wear shoulderpads? ;) For what it's worth, I just measured mine and they are around 18" - I'm about 5'9". |

It sounds like low blood sugar to me, too - that's how I feel when mine is low. I try to eat low-GI foods to help manage it. If I don't eat for awhile or eat a lot of sugary food, I get shaky and feel like passing out. It's probably something you want to ask your doctor about because it could point to something like hypoglycemia or diabetes (or it could be nothing! probably is if you haven't been eating a lot :)) |

Well, you get gas if you eat a lot of high-fiber foods - drinking water might help. Otherwise, maybe your doctor can test you for lactose intolerance. |

Something you can do for free to get meal ideas is to go to the library -- browse the cookbook sections and look for books on light cooking, vegetarian cooking, etc or see what types of diet books they have. If you have a problem going outside, exercise indoors. Check out videos from your local library or get a free trial from netflix. My local public access channel shows fitness programs in the morning, you might be able to tape some to watch later. Ideas for cheap food- oatmeal, frozen and canned vegetables, canned beans, dried legumes, rice, veggie burgers. Try to eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. |

The fiber is slightly low - I think 25 is the minimum RDA, but you're pretty close. Maybe when you do your stretching exercises, you can try doing some weight lifting exercises? I usually lift some light dumbbells in front of the tv every night and I find that helps. Another thing is maybe try doing fitness videos. If you have on-demand there are fitness movies you can try, or you can get a free trial to Netflix and rent a bunch of things to see if there are any you like. I did that and found one called Bar Method that has worked pretty well for me. Now that I'm used to it, can do the exercises on my own, while watching tv if I don't feel like playing the video.

| Weight Loss | Manly meal? | Dec 26 2008 22:03 (UTC) |

Maybe you could try eating different types of foods? What do you typically eat on a diet? If you're not already, try eating high-fiber foods, like oatmeal (instant oatmeal is a pretty good snack that keeps you full) and make sure you're eating enough fruits and vegetables (at least 5 servings a day) and drink water! Eat lean protein, too, and maybe try snacking on nuts (not too many) - a lot of people say eating a handful of nuts helps keep them satisfied. You don't have to eat small portions of everything - you can eat large portions of healthy foods while still consuming an appropriate amount of calories. |

| Vegetarian | vegans and gluten free | Nov 08 2008 13:19 (UTC) |

There's no reason to be gluten-free unless you have an allergy. I'm not aware of any credible study that recomends gluten avoidance for people who aren't gluten intolerant. Like the parkinson's thing- if you read the study, it really only applies to people with celiac disease, which most people do not have. It's trendy now to avoid gluten and there is a lot of bad information out there written by journalists with no scientifc background. Unless you have gluten intolerance you shouldn't avoid it. If you think you may have gluten problems, you should see an allergist who can do a test to check. Otherwise, wheat gluten is a good source of nutrition in a vegan diet (especially whole wheat products and seitan). :) |

| Vegetarian | Yeast Free, Egg Free bread recipe | Nov 06 2008 01:24 (UTC) |
|
Most bread recipes don't have eggs. If you don't want to use yeast, you can make a soda bread (using baking soda as leavening) or sourdough. Sourdough bread requires making a starter first, which cultivates yeast from the air, so it's kind of the same thing as using yeast if you're trying to avoid that. |

| Vegetarian | What's the worst that could happen if you don't get enough protein? | Nov 06 2008 01:19 (UTC) |
9 |
People in developed countries don't really get protein deficiencies. The only way you will get it, assuming you're eating enough calories, is if you eat a lot of fruits and/or sugars. Pretty much everything other than fruits/sugars has 10%+ percent of calories from protein. Whole grains and nuts are a good source of proteins. |
|||
| Foods | How much protein is "enough protein"? | Oct 07 2008 07:47 (UTC) |

Your diet should be about 10-35% protein, per the CDC. http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/nutrition/nut rition_for_everyone/basics/protein.htm Most research I have seen recommend between 10-20%, if you are very active or are doing a lot of lifting you can eat more. 50 grams a day is generally a good figure to go by, but you can eat more (especially if you lift or are extremely active). If you eat 1,600 calories per day and want 20% protein, for example, then you would take 1,600*.2 = 320 (so 320 calories should come from protein). 1 gram of protein = ~4 calories, so 320/4 = 80g. 10% protein for 1,600 calories per day would be 40 grams. So for 1,600 calories eat between 40-80 g protein. The 1g protein per kg of body weight is also a good measure - in lbs, that would be 1g per 2.2lbs (or take your weight and multiply it by .45). |

| Recipes | Subs for white flour? | Oct 01 2008 00:43 (UTC) |

| I agree with the gluten thing. If you want to bake whole wheat bread, most all-whole-wheat recipes will require you to add gluten or wheat germ. (this is also the reason most bread recipes call for bread flour - it has a higher percentage of gluten than regular flour). Whole wheat bread is also a bit harder to knead. | |||

| lol, i agree with everyone else. a chicken laying an egg is like a human being ovulating every month. Fish oil I believe is made from fish, so to get it you have to kill fish. To get eggs or caviar, you don't have to kill anything. i keep chickens in my backyard - they lay every day and never pay attention to their eggs. if i didn't collect them they'd rot or the chickens would eventually eat them themselves. |

| I think the vegan meals will usually be appropriate for diabetics and are probably low calorie to begin with. A lot of the time the vegetarian meal is also vegan - it is cheaper for them to do things like this than to order different meals. | |||
