| I do it because I want to take pride in myself. People always compliment me on my accomplishments, but I always feel that if I have such great potential to accomplish things in school and at work, I should in terms of my weight as well... or at least it bothers me to be successful in one but not in the other, especially since being successful at school/work often comes at the expense of taking better care of myself. People always say they are proud of me, but I want to be proud of myself, and I don't think I'll be able to really be proud of myself until I achieve a balance between the two: take care of other things and myself too. Another thing that bothers me is that I have noticed that when placed in the same room with someone with less accomplishments or experience, but thinner and prettier, they get more attention and admiration. It's just the way people respond to better looking people... and it's not even because they intend to have an affair with that person or anything like that... people simply seem more interested in what they have to say, more likely to implement their advice, etc. I have stopped feeling bitter about this and wanting to make other people change their attitude (they won't, it's how it is out there) and I'm focusing more on what I can do to make myself attractive in both ways - on the inside and on the outside. Sometimes it feels like no matter how smart or accomplished a person is, if they are fat, they are seen as having some kind of deficiency that negates a big part of their worth. And just as an aside: to those of you who have stated that you are embarrased by what you buy in the grocery store because you are overweight, I don't know about anyone else, but I always tend to stare at the carts of skinny people. I could care less what anybody else buys but I'm always interested to see if skinny people buy healthy food or not... unfortunately I see a lot of skinny people buying lots of bread and chips and soda and cereal... oh well. |

| I live in Lexington, Kentucky, and I will try to find more of these places nearby but I haven't seen many. Also, traffic is really bad here so usually going from store to store is difficult, but I will make an effort to go out during times when traffic isn't so bad. If there is a football game going on, forget about going anywhere! I live near the University of Kentucky campus! | |||

| Well, let me tell you what - when I was exasperated and hating myself, I went to an edocrinologist who told me that I had to eat low-carb to lose my weight. I did not want to hear it because I was convinced I couldn't do it. I got upset in his office and left crying.
Two more years later I was even bigger and I hated myself. What that doctor said always haunted me. Finally I started doing it. I also had to come to a very difficult ralization: just because I didn't want reality to be a certain way, didn't mean reality was going to be different. In other words, I have to adjust to how the world is, the world won't adjust to me just because I don't like it. It was very difficult and to tell you the truth, the last 30 I'm working on... very little is budging AT ALL right now because I still eat a slice of wheat bread or a pita pocket for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I also eat some fruit. These are the things I didn't do when I was on low carb, but it worked, and eating some carbs now is making it so unbearably slow (I am serious, scale hasn't moved in 3 weeks and I eat 1500 or below a day!) that I am considering going back on the low-carb, as painful as it will be. The thing I have to face is that for my body I believe the sugars are what is making me gain and not lose, and nothing in my psyche is going to make this different. I just got this book too and will be reading it soon: http://www.fibermenace.com/ Good luck! violeta_carmen, Congradulations on losing so much! I've actually tried the low-carb route, and it just isn't for me. I lost 40 pounds on it very quickly, but I would get depressed because I felt like I couldn't eat ANYTHING. After I went off the low-carb diet I gained all of my weight back. I don't want to go through that again. I'd much rather lose the weight slow and keep it off forever. But I'm glad it has worked for you! Good luck with the remaining 30. |

| I take one every day anyway. I heard that in the US the farmlands are so over-cropped and there is no long-break allowed periodically between re-planting that many fruits and vegetables we eat contain up to 7 times less nutrients than in other countries or than they used to contain years ago. I don' t have time to look up sources right now 'cause I'm on my way to work, but I did read a few articles on this. | |||

| I would also add: eat more lean protein and less carbs. You can eat a LOT of carbs in one sitting but less protein because it's more filling. | |||

| We have a lot in common.
I was always heavy. I was 263 lbs. at 23. Over the last two years I've lost 80 lbs. and have about 30 to go. Here is what I have done: The last 80 lbs. I lost on low carb. No pasta, bread, potatos, carrots, rice, corn, etc. Even here I only ate lean meats and no heavy cheese/oil/fats. Mostly grilled, sauteed, or baked, boiled. I also had no fruit b/c of the sugar. I too would have become diabetic and therefore the low carb really worked to stabilize my blood sugar and reduce my insuline resistance. The remaining 30 I'm trying to lose thought low calorie. I'm still really careful about carbs but now I do eat whole grain stuff in moderation and some fruit (lower glycemic index the better). Overall here is what I found: Pre-diabetic = blood sugar problems = watching carbs is vital. Simply low calorie with some carbs is slower but with a busy lifestyle it's more manageable. Right now I'm not looking to see how quickly I can lose as long as I do lose. I'm OK with it being slower because I'm not as miserable denying myself. The carbs I do have now are fruit, pita pockets (one pocket at a time), low calorie Thomas English Muffins. I avoid all cereals b/c the small serving size I can have doesn't last long enough. For breakfast I usually have egg beaters with pita pocket and tomatoes. For lunch, protein and veggies with small amounts of brown rice or whole wheat pasta. Also, exercise is really important. Also, exercise will make it FASTER! Good luck. I wish I would have done it when I was your age. Right now I'm 29 and I just know that doing it now will leave my skin not as nice as it would have bounced back if I were 18 ;). |

| My question is: why not just eat regular food?
Protein shakes have always messed up my stomach. Anyway, eating regular food also makes it easier to identify exact portions. |

| Foods | What do think about Healthy Choice For Lunch | Apr 19 2007 20:23 (UTC) |

| I wanted quick low-cal meals too and figured buying the frozen ones (or canned soups) would be a good idea.
Problem is that I started eating those on a regular basis (every day for lunch and sometimes dinner too!). I stopped losing and then put on water weight :(. I now try to cook healthier and store it in the fridge for longer. For example I made turkey patties (ground turkey + seasonings) and put like, eight of them in the fridge. All I do for lunch or dinner is take one patty and a pita pocket and eat that. I do the same with stir fry vegetables; cook once and put in fridge and keep eating out of it for days. I still have those frozen meals in the freezer though for when I simply don't have anything or have no time to make anything. I try not to count on them though. |

| For example right now I ate a Granny Smith apple: it listed here as 121 calories! It was medium sized so I didn't think it was as big as the database though it was (241 grams) so I put that I ate .75 apple. Well that's still 91 calories. As a snack that's a lot! | |||

| So what you are saying is that Okra is high in carbs. Figures! ARG!! I am trying to get away from more carbs... I want to eat veggies that aren't high in carb. Yes I do get carbs from wheat english muffins (the Thomas 100 calorie ones) and pita pockets and yams and fruit, but I stick to small portions of those and I want veggies to be filling but not high in carbs. No wonder I liked it :(. |

| Recipes | veggies - how do you cook them? | Apr 19 2007 16:43 (UTC) |

| Well since I got no reply I decided to follow the directions on the bag for the frozen Okra.
I boiled it. When it was done the water was like mucus. Is this normal? It stretched onto my fork for about a mile. It looked really gross but also really neat in a slimy sort of way. I put some salt and a little butter on it and it actually tasted good (didn't expect that). So, is Okra really healthy then if I like the taste of it or is it really high in something bad for you? Thanks! |

| I try to avoid grapes because they are mostly sugar.
I tend to eat fruit that break down a little slower in the stomach (not a lot of liquid sugar). So, I usually don't even eat oranges although I do eat grapefruits. |

Sometimes my boyfriend feels like it's his "fault" or influence that resulted me in gaining weight or at least making it hard for me to lose.
I've always had the attitude that I'm in control of what goes into my mouth. I get a sense of satisfaction when I eat what I should regardless of what is around. Temptation is always there. If not from my dear boyfriend, it's from work, or from a social event, etc. Remember, you are what YOU eat, not what she eats. And yes, I know it's tough!! Last two times we went to take-out chinese he ordered what he normally does and I got lean chicken and vegetables and ate hardly any rice. Once you decide you are the one with the decision, you will actually feel a sense of release and freedom that can be pretty powerful. Good luck! |

| The Lounge | acne desperation | Apr 18 2007 20:50 (UTC) |

| I used to have bad acne too. My mom is one of these people who always falls for silly sales gimmicks, and she always comes at me with all these too-good-to-be-true ads and commercials. Needless to say I roll my eyes and move on. One day she approached me with a crumpled ad for Proactive. I rolled my eyes. I especially don't like frequent-advertisers, which they are. So she went and bought some, and because it was there, I decided to try it. What would you know, it worked! Don't get me wrong, I was miserable the first two weeks. My skin burned (really hurt) for like two weeks as all the acne on my face was dying. It was red, inflamed, but in the end no more acne appeared after it. I would say if you use it, give it a chance. I know people who say it doesn't work for them because it makes it worse, but it did make it worse for two weeks for me while it killed everything. If you stick it out it will help! Good luck! PS. after years of use, I only use the repairing lotion as maintenance; I don't need all the other stuff. PPS. buy it in the mall, not online, because this way you won't get spammed with email or advertisements! ***Edit*** Didn't realize you said you already used it. Are you sure you used it every day, morning and night? Sometimes if I don't do it religiousy it creeps back! |

It's supposed to be clean and ready to eat! Not bug infested! It's not expired and if I hadn't found 'em I would have eaten them :(. I am grossed out but maybe it's not that big of a deal. I won't be buying it anymore tho! |

| Weight Loss | Difference between being hungry & being full | Apr 18 2007 15:01 (UTC) |

| Welcome kerry07! Don't forget to set up a profile!
Here is one idea that you might consider... So you think you won't lose if you up for 3k calories a day, BUT you also are hungry on the lower calorie attempt for the day so here is a compromise: Considering that what you used to eat was mainly fast food and processed, how about you cook healthy meals like chicken breast, veggies, etc. and not limit yourself to how much you eat of those (eat until you are satisfied, though not stuffed) and you might come closer to 3000 for now BUT it won't be as high in fat, carbs, and as processed as what you used to eat. It may be that this change to getting your calories from healthier, more nutritious foods will get you started pretty well on weight loss. |

| Thanks for the tips all! I have a couple of more questions:
1) When is it contagious? I last saw (and kissed) my boyfriend Sunday afternoon. The sore was present Monday morning when I woke up but it wasn't "there" Sunday when we parted. Could I have given it to him? 2) Should I keep Carmex on it at all times (it's what I have at home right now) or should I let it dry up? I'm afraid if I let it dry up it will crack and bleed, but it will probably dry up overnight anyway. |

I wish!! I can't find calorie info for TGI Friday's, or Mellow Mushroom, or many other restaurants. They do NOT have the nutritional info. I long for the day when you can go into a restaurant and request calorie and nutritional info on every dish they serve. |

| 2 things (after actually reading your profile):
1. You already have a problem with binging. Staying hungry all day will NOT help this problem! I would not be at all surprised if you waited until the dinner and then had way more than the 1400 calories. 2. You are a teenager. It's even more important for you to eat balanced meals throughout the day. Also, must you have mac and cheese? That is carbs and fats mixed together. Any way you can get some protein with some vegetables? |
