Motivation Let's high five each other for resisting Halloween candy! Nov 02 2008

I don't exactly rule- I am a duke to your emperor, or something- but even though I bought three bags of candy, anticipating lots of trick-or-treaters, I only had one piece of each, just to make sure it was good, y'know. I was a bit surprised that I really don't crave that stuff anymore. It used to be that if I had Reese's in the house I had no rest until it was gone, but now, one piece is good and I don't need any more.

Weight Loss Is it difficult for you to discuss your weight loss goals around heavier people? Oct 07 2008

Yeah, I sometimes feel a bit guilty, so generally I've found it's just easier not to talk about my weight-loss plans.  I'm already quite a bit smaller than many of my friends (although I'm still the "fat one" in my skinny family, lol), but I don't want to seem at all self-righteous because I'm losing weight. So, if I decline goodies, I just say "no thanks" and leave it at that.  If I'm pressed, I just say, "I had a huge breakfast/lunch/dinner, and I'm still stuffed, sorry!."  Then I just hope my stomach doesn't growl and give me away! Sealed

I try not to dish out free advice, because I hate it when others do it to me, but if someone notices that I've lost weight and asks how I did it, I might never shut up! Or, if the discussion turns to weight loss and everyone is giving their opinion, I feel free to chime in.

The Lounge Why girls tend to prefer "not nice guys" Oct 04 2008

Hmm, interesting! I've been doing a bit of soul-searching on this topic recently. I was married (now widowed) for 12 years to a "bad boy," who had a really aggressive exterior but was actually a super-sweet and compassionate nice guy who treated me like a princess.

Most recently, I dated the quintessential "nice guy."  He treated me like a princess too, but something just felt off.  Plus he was kind of boring. Frown So, I broke up with him, and boy, did his true self come out! Extremely hostile, passive-aggressive, manipulative, vindictive, the list goes on.  I'm a bit concerned that I fell for the act, but also relieved that my instincts were good, in the end.

So much of this, I think, comes down to personal preferece- I'm attracted to interesting, intelligent types with strong personalities- no doormats, please! But it also has a lot to do with how I was raised. I was a daddy's girl from day one, and am still very close to my father. All I ever saw was that he treated my mother with love and respect, while still having pretty traditional ideas about gender roles. And I always felt loved and respected by him- I knew that he valued me as my own person and respected my ideas and opinions. So I won't settle for any man who won't treat me with that level of respect.

At the same time, I see many of my friends put up with what to me is unbelievable treatment from men in their lives. I don't know how many times I've said, "you let him say THAT to you?"  So yeah, I think a lot of it comes down to what we were raised to see as acceptable.

I think toning up is the way to go, because you're at a great weight for your height. I can feel your pain, though. I've lost over 20 lbs and am halfway to my goal, but still feel really flabby. So, just in the past two weeks I've kicked up the exercise to include more muscle-building, and think I already look and feel so much better!

Just doing my bit to BUMP! This totally bears out my own experience, which until now I couldn't explain.  I just know that I can go several weeks without dropping any weight, rigorously maintaining my deficit, and then, after a day of going to maintenance or over, I drop anywhere from 1-4 pounds. It inspires me to change things up a bit!

Yeah, once I stopped the bingeing, it was really easy to stay within my calorie allowance and not feel the least bit deprived.  Then the weight just started peeling off!

No worries! I put a couple teaspoons on my oatmeal every morning, and I've lost 20 lbs in the past three months. Just log it as part of your daily calories, and you'll be fine. But I know; it tastes so good that it MUST be bad for you! Wink

Weight Loss Going to bed hungry-Does anyone else find... Sep 26 2008

I usually have some air-popped popcorn with no-cal (supposedly!) butter spray. It's very few calories, but filling enough that I don't feel hungry at bedtime. I'm always starving first thing in the morning, though, but I like that feeling, and I really enjoy a hearty breakfast!

Yup. Been there.  It's been about three months since I've had a binge though, and I've lost 20 pounds. It took some real conscious effort to realize what triggered a binge, and then taking some steps to avoid those triggers.

One was not eating enough throughout the day, then stuffing my face at night. Now, I eat a big breakfast and a decent lunch, and although I'm hungry at dinnertime, I'm not so inclined to pig out. Plus, I plan for dinner, and snacks afterwards. Many evenings, I can still have ice cream or popcorn while I'm winding things down.

Another was not exercising. Maybe that's the biggest.  If I can get home after work, and instead of collapsing with a glass of wine and junk food, I take the dog for a long walk and maybe do an exercise video, there is no chance of a binge later on.

Boredom. Just find something else to do.  Whenever I'm busy, I don't even think about food.  It's a great time to find new hobbies, or revisit old ones.

Whatever you do, don't lose heart.  It took me a really long time to get there, but I got there, and not even PMS can derail me now! Laughing

wow- I eat a 550-calorie breakfast, and I thought that was a lot! Can you add a bowl of oatmeal, cooked with milk?

BTW, it wasn't until I started eating the big breakfast every morning that my weight-loss really took off.  I don't know why it works, but it does!

39, 5'8", 177 lbs. I eat around 1600-1700 per day, which is very much on the low side. I'm shooting for a 1000 cal deficit for as long as it works- I've lost  20 lbs so far- but will decrease the deficit when the inevitable plateau occurs. I'm already scratching my head over how I'm going to get in another 250-500 cals daily.  I feel like I'm eating a lot already!

Wow! 10 lbs in a month is awesome! I think I kind of defeated myself for a while because I didn't have time for more exercise than my dog-walking, and somehow told myself that I just wouldn't be able to lose unless I could do more.  While the exercise is important- the calories-in-calories-out principle is even more so!

Oh yeah, that's pretty much how I'll know I'll have reached my goal; not by the number on the scale, but when I fit into those size 8's again! I sabotaged myself a few days ago when I was feeling fit and sexy, by trying them on. I could barely get one leg in! Ouch! I still have a way to go. But I'll get there!

Weight Loss Anybody out there who is actually losing weight??? Sep 06 2008

I've lost 13 lbs in the past 2 months. I know it's not that much compared to many others, but I seem to be making very steady progress, and it's easy! I eat 16-1800 per day, depending on my exercise level, don't feel like I deprive myself at all, and the weight seems to come off at about 1-2 lbs per week.

It seems that the key is not to get impatient and really concentrate on changing one's habits for good.  I eat pretty cleanly (and cheaply) 90 percent of the time, and that makes it really easy to stay in my calorie limits. You just have to be committed for the long haul.

Do it! Some of the best fun I've had in my life was traveling all over Europe and some of Asia all by myself. Part of the advantage of going by yourself is that you're much more likely to meet interesting people than if you're part of a group of friends. (although that's fun, too!)
Weight Loss How many llbs to lose before you notice the difference??? Sep 02 2008

It seems to take forever! I've lost 13 lbs in the past 7 weeks, and I don't notice much difference at all.  It's partly because I'm pretty tall (5'8") and also because I distribute weight fairly evenly.  It's an advantage while gaining (no one notices) but a disadvantage while losing (no one notices!)

Blonds and red-heads.  I didn't think I cared, until I pondered the reasons I wasn't attracted to my most recent ex. Brunette, yeah. And hairy. Don't like a lot of body hair. As far as body type goes, I like generally fit and athletic. As long as they're that, they can be tall, short, wiry, burly or anything in between. Smart (but not a know-it-all) and funny is definitely a turn-on, too!

Oh, and young! That was another thing. The recent ex was a lot older than me, and I just couldn't get into it.  Maybe I'm having a mid-life crisis (pushing 40 and all that), but lately, the younger they are, the more I like 'em! :D

haha! I totally do this! But I'm more about, "who's prettier?" And I tend to compare myself favorably. I guess I'm in a confident phase. :D Even though I'm as large as I've ever been (size 12, on a good day), I feel very curvy and attractive.  I just wish it made me feel more motivated to lose, rather than resting on my rather ample laurels.
Weight Loss REALLY REALLY BIG breakfast? Aug 07 2008

Sounds great to me! I get up around 6 as well, and by the time I get back from walking the dog and have a shower,  it's been at least an hour since I first got up. I usually eat at least 500 calories at breakfast as well, while I'd barely be able to choke anything down immediately after getting up. I've also been losing weight steadily, so I don't think there's anything wrong with waiting a bit.
The Lounge Do cheat days really help? Aug 07 2008
02:25 (UTC)
It kind of depends on what you mean by "cheat."  About once every two weeks, I have a totally unplanned day where I say "heck with it," and eat whatever I want. I don't binge, though, and probably rarely exceed 2500 calories. And then I make sure to get back on the wagon the next day. The interesting thing is that, every time I've had one of those days, I've seen a drop in weight the very next morning.  I don't really have an explanation- it's just happened the last four times I've done it.  I'm thinking about planning one once a week, just to see that 1-2 lb drop the next morning!

Hee. My first kiss with my current boyfriend is part of why I will be breaking up with him pretty soon. It was terrible, and it didn't get better. He's apparently, untrainable. :-) Maybe it's superficial of me, because kissing isn't everything, but I just can't be with a guy I dread kissing.

However, if it was just unspectacular, as opposed to spectacularly bad, things will probably improve as you become more comfortable with it.

Is it TTOM? Because I reliably gain 3-4 pounds every month around the same time. Those lbs come right off again after a few days, and even though I know to expect it, it doesn't help my PMS'd mental state! :-)
Weight Loss 344 Calories so far today....Can I eat what ever I want for dinner?? Jul 24 2008
03:04 (UTC)
Go for it! I ended up having a lot of calories to "use" at the end of the day today, due to an extra lot of yard work, so I've just had a big plate of pasta with alfredo sauce. I still need to come up with 300 more, so a half cup of Chunky Monkey later on tonight should do nicely. :-)

A little bit of pasta goes a long way actually, at about 210 cals for 2 dry oz. That's not a huge amount of food, in my book.

If I'm coming up short towards the end of the day, I start substituting higher-fat items, like the alfredo sauce instead of marinara, and full-fat instead of low-fat salad dressing. And I always keep the Chunky Monkey in reserve!
Weight Loss How do you think a shock to the system would effect weightloss Jul 19 2008

Ow! I doubt it would make any difference at all to any meaningful, long-term weight-loss.  You might see a pound or two in either direction, but I know from my own experience that that can happen for any number of reasons anyway.  Maybe someone else has some more scientific info on this?

Sorry about your finger!

I'm 5'8 and 189. *cries* I'm shooting for 145, although depending on how much muscle I carry, I recall looking pretty hot at 160 and easily fitting into a size six.  I'm a sturdy wench, though.  If I weighed 130, I would look like I was at death's door!

You have my sympathy; that's a tough environment in which to be healthy.  As a fellow anxiety-eater though, I've learned a few things.  One is to consciously turn away from food and to something else.  If I'm in the middle of something I can't get away from, I pause and take ten very deep breaths. Or I say a little prayer, or try to flood myself with positive self-talk.  It takes some conscious effort, but if I do it, I always feel better, and am less likely to reach for the chocolate.

Another thing, which you probably already know, is that exercise is a great way to deal with anxiety.  My dog gets so many walks when I'm under a lot of stress! :-)  You don't have to go to the gym- and your dad needs to back off, lol- just walk around the block for five minutes to clear your head a little.

You can do this! Good luck!
