Weight Loss Why are you overweight/obese? Apr 18 2007

because i ate huge amounts of unhealthy foods = i failed to see that every single action i take equals a decision and that these decisions, one by one, add up to either impacting my life in a positive or negative way - that aside, i acknowledge there is a certain immediate pleasure in food - taste and or psychological comfort

people are different - we never know what is impacting a person - we never know another's full story - maybe she's mistakenly feeling ur encouragement is just a put down or a criticism - just continue being a good friend - i'd stress her good points - like her beautiful skin, beautiful hair, stylishness, etc.

Tim Hortons coffee (its always fresh)

diabetes is in our family - both sides - up and down generations - it works like this - you either take control of diabetese or it takes control of you - your mom CAN do this - her life depends on it - food is just fuel but some of us learn this the hard way

just a postscript - i love buckwheat cabbage rolls (i use buckwheat instead of rice, wrapped with softened cabbage leaves, tucked into a roaster and smothered with tomato soup - a really delicious and healthy supper - i usually prepare a large roaster and then freeze dinner size portions

wow united2gether learned alot from you - and congrats to you joanne - i've no recipes to share but would just like to say that i've type 2 diabetes also and have found 2 foods that REALLY do help me - don't know about anyone else - but the 2 foods i think are worth trying are buckwheat and bitter melon - both take a bit of getting used to but i've grown to love them and they really do help me - i prepare my buckwheat 1 cup buckwheat to 1 cup water in a rice cooker - this food really gives me a feeling of being full and satisfied and whenever i eat buckwheat i find my levels don't spike nearly as much (its a several points difference so for me that's significant) - bitter melon is a veggie and again, seems to really keep my sugar levels in check - if anyone else with type 2 has tried either of these foods i'd like to hear their stories

wherever there is someone hurting there is someone else willing to hurt them more - we have the power to change our weight, really we are blessed because all we have to do is know that every single decision we make is either right for us or wrong for us - then just choose right consistently - no patches needed

i'd guess the vast majority of those with real weight problems have this same problem - trying to fill some deep emptiness - it takes a complete paradigm shift - for me it was changing the way i perceive my life, taking back control and putting ME first, not food

i have diabetese which, in a nutshell, means that "sugar" (ie. carbs), little by little, will poison me if i don't keep my sugar levels at normal range - so my decision wasn't really a decision at all - it was and will always be, for me, a matter of life or death

to anyone who might read this - i want you to have the longest, healthiest, happiest life possible - and to keep that thought foremost and before you take any of the thousands of decisions we make each and every day, ask yourself "will this make me healthier and add to my life in a positive way" - if the answer is yes go for it; if no, don't do it - because it affects your life

pinthin, i wish i could give you a hug - if nobody is filling the emptiness, fill it yourself - love yourself and live a full life, food is really just fuel after all
Weight Loss long plateaus make no sense! Apr 04 2007

plateaus like this are normal - but if you want to see a drop cut the calories by 300 or so - you can best achieve this by recording everything you eat previous to the day you cut out 300 - then just take out 300 calories, and increase your exercise and u'll likely see a change - i believe sometimes we "assume calories" - i try to keep in mind that i could be eating about 300 excess in calories per day just by "guesstimating" instead of really working out the true caloric values (lol - p.s. i have the same problem)

stop and think about everything you've been blessed with - and then priorize those - nothing is more important than your good health - look in the mirror at YOU and make one of the most important decisions in your life - that you will not willingly ingest anything that isn't going to nuture you and give you the best future you can have - and stick to that decision - some have posted great tips like substituting healthier food choices and tossing all the junk food right out of your house - really its like poison and who would eat poison???  the expression "trying hard" is rather meaningless - instead, make that ONE decision and stick to it simply because you are worth it - good luck you
Weight Loss How Much Do You Fluctuate Each Day? Apr 04 2007

Weight Loss Calories in the morning vs. calories at night...what's the dif? Apr 04 2007
00:21 (UTC)
11
a calorie is a calorie but spreading caloric intake over the day makes sense as smaller meals make for an overall feeling of feeling better - not eating before bed isn't a bad idea, i'd guess, for most people but people with diseases such as type 2 diabetes may need some bit of slow digesting food to help control blood sugar increases overnight

Weight Loss i dont know if this is good or bad? Apr 01 2007
12:58 (UTC)
it would depend on whether she's healthy or not - there are many diseases - diabetes for example - where eating too much at one sitting will cause harm over time because it will cause sugar spikes

about 3 years ago i changed my attitude and its made a world of difference - i decided to concentrate on the goal of healthy living rather than simply losing weight - and i've lost over 100 lbs now - the only way i could do this was to consider every decision i make on a decision to decision basis, asking myself "is this decision going to leave me healthier or happier with myself or vice versa - it works for me - not only when it comes to eating, but basically in every way
The Lounge dont u get annoyed getting rid of clothes u like?! Apr 01 2007

Weight Loss Excersise making me put on weight? Apr 01 2007
12:34 (UTC)
riding is exercise and that would make you lose weight not gain weight so the fact you gained weight after riding is pure coincidence - i've "gained" 3 lbs in a days more times than i like to count - but its a monthly thing for me - water retention and such - as for the horse, if you don't want to ride him because you don't like riding, that's one thing - but not riding because you think it is the cause of your gaining weight is simply a wrong assumption

anything served with buckwheat - buckwheat can be cooked in a rice cooker (1 cup buckwheat, 1 cup water) - that's the basis for most of my at-home dinners because it feels me up like nothing else does, has a nutty flavour that i love and goes well with any veggie, including sauteed mushrooms, beef, bison or other meat - for a special treat try a casserole of cooked buckwheat (slightly underdone), sauerkraut or cabbage, tomato soup and dill - bake at 350 for about 1 hr.
Foods quick question on olive oil vs vegetable oil Apr 01 2007
05:10 (UTC)
1
i use extra virgin olive oil to drizzle on bread or tomatoes or as a salad oil; virgin olive oil or canola oil for cooking - olive oil on bread is really so tasty and a tiny bit goes a long way

i avoid anything with coconut oil
Foods How do I eat veggies? Apr 01 2007
05:05 (UTC)

i began loving veggies after realizing preparation makes ALL the difference - nobody likes soggy veggies - here are some examples of really good veggies:

1) carrots boiled just til crisp then tossed in a pan with tsp of olive oil and chopped parsley, drizzle with lemon juice

2)green chili pepper stuffed with finely diced tomatoes & onions (eat raw)

3)mashed turnip (not overcooked) with Splenda sweetner mixed in

4)if you don't like the "regular" veggies try the ethnic section - you'll be pleasantly surprised

rule of thumb - do not overcook veggies (this ruins them)
