Foods Salmon ideas?? Apr 26 2007

I just thought of another one...cajun salmon is AWESOME too...if you've got cajun spice try that, OR if you don't have it, some chili flakes and salt/paprika would be soooo yummy.  About the grill, salmon can be tricky on the grill, so make sure your grill is hot enough and make sure you don't flip it too soon or you will have a salmon stuck all over your george foreman.  You could try it on there, but if you want to go the safe route, use the oven or pan fry it.  I would feel terrible if your salmon didn't work out properly on the grill because it is sooooo good.  I hope it turns out great for you!

Lemon pepper is always great on fish, if you have any.  If not, squeeze some lemon juice on top with a bit of salt and fresh cracked pepper.  If you've got any dried herbs, those would be great too...if you've got a mix, or some thym or oregano, they would all work great.  Personally, I love to grill salmon...I think it brings out the best flavour, but to each their own!  Give the lemon pepper a try :)
Weight Loss marinating with out using oil? Apr 26 2007

If you don't want to use any oil, (I always like to use a bit of EVOO), but a good alternative could be to use some lemon juice, or even soy sauce (probably has high sodium though)...also a bit of dijon mustard makes a great marinate as well as some red wine vinegar.  Great marinates usually tend to have some acidity to them.  You can definitley get by without using oil...The rub is a great idea as well.

Hope this helps.  But you can get by with using only a tiny bit of oil, with vinegar or dijon or soy sauce...it shouldn't be too many calories.

Hi Meg,

I thought that maybe I could help you out a bit, because we are very similar in age, weight, and height.  I started dieting/exercising about 3.5 weeks ago, and to date I have lost about 8 lbs.  I started at 174, so I know how you feel.  What I have been doing is trying to eat very healthy (I don't even log calories) but it could be helpful to you.  I changed my eating habits to eating only whole wheat, cutting out pretty much all soda (except diet ones once and awhile), drinking more water, and eating more veggies and a good dinner at night.  For breakfast, try to have something low cal with fibre - I usually have a whole wheat english muffin (130 cals) with a bit of cheese or jam.  I have a morning snack of carrot sticks, and lunch of usually a piece of whole wheat toast, with cheese, turkey, lettuce and a bit of mayo on it.  I have yogurt, and fruit too with water.  Afternoon snack is usually an apple or some kind of fruit, and for dinner I usually have Some sort of protein with lots of salad and veggies, and maybe a LITTLE bit of potato or something...really small on the starches though.  I try to do some type of work out every day.  I started out doing cardio 4x a week for 1/2 hour.  The exercise was what really kick started my weight loss, so make sure you are getting some cardio in.  If I get hungry after my workout I will have a small bowl of cereal or fruit...If you can do this I am almost positive that you will start seeing results soon.  Make sure you pack your lunches with only healthy food and you will be fine.  I haven't deprived myself at all.  You can do it!

If you want to add me to your friends list, go right ahead, we can keep motivating eachother and give eachother tips on our weight loss.  It's hard but just do it anyway even if you don't want to.  That's what I do.

Good luck.

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your replies, you have cheered me up a bit!  And no, it is not TTOTM anytime soon either.

About the calorie tracking, no i don't but I would like to do it.  The problem I have with it is that I am usually fine with things that are simple that say the calories right on the product...but things like cheese, I don't know how much of it I put on my sandwiches etc...and I find that it will be inaccurate due to that, so that is the main reason I don't track them.  I am bad with recognizing serving sizes and I don't usually measure how much of something like that I am eating, so what should I do?  Maybe I should try logging again today...for breakfast I had a whole wheat english muffin (130 cals.) with 2 slices of mozza cheese on each half...no idea what 4 slices is?

But I really appreciate your replies and it is so nice to keep eachother motivated.

Hi All,

I started on April 2 at 174 lbs.  I am currently down to 166 lbs...8 lb. loss, I can't wait to reach the 10 lb. point!  I have another 30 or so pounds to go...

I find to make it easier is splitting it up into 3 goals of 10 lbs. each...this way I am closer to my goals and it doesn't feel so far away!  It's great!

Good luck all.

Hey Ladies,

I have been doing dance workout videos for the past 3 weeks now, at least 4x a week.  I have lost 8 lbs. so far!  I would reccommend these DVDs to anyone...they are fun and at the same time you burn calories!  My favourite instructor is Maria Forelo...I would reccommend finding DVDs with her in it.

Hello all,

Hope it is going well for everyone!

Sassy

Current Weight:  166 lbs.

Last Week Weight:  168 lbs.

Pounds Lost Week 4:  -2

Starting Weight:  174 lbs.

Pounds Lost Since Challenge:  8 lbs!!!!! YAY

What has been your biggest frustration?

Weekend eating.  I know I could do a lot better on the weekends, but I think I just feel like treating myself...Also, got to keep on the exercise even when I don't feel like it.

Behavioral modifictions

1)  Buy healthier food for myself on the weekends and less beer.

2)  Force myself to work out even when I don't feel like it.

Will you commit?

I sure will...starting to see the lbs. come off is the biggest motivator for me.  It's going great on this end.

Good luck everyone else!  Just think of that itty bitty teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini!

Hi There,

My advice to you would be to make sure you follow your 1200-1300 for the week (and exercise) up until Saturday.  On Saturday, treat yourself!  Don't go overboard, but you can still enjoy the dessert!!  Sometimes if I am good all week, I will have a treat on the weekend, and I actually still end up losing!  Don't worry about it!  Enjoy yourself...I want to see that movie too!!!

Hey girl,

I am in Kitchener btw...but I am just gonna say that I tried this diet before...I didn't last more than 2 days.  The lack of carbs in phase 1 made me SO sick that I felt nausious all the time.  I looked it up and foudn that other people had felt this way too, but not everyone.  I would just be careful with this...it is a fad diet after all.

Starting Weight: 174.0

Week 1 Weight:  174.0

Week 2 Weight: 172.0

Week 3 (Current Weight):  168.0

Weight loss this week: 4 lbs.

The thing that I will aim to improve on this week is my eating habits on the weekends.  I usually do so well during the week that I go nuts on the weekends...

2 other things to increase my weight loss:

1)  Do cardio at least 4 times this week.

2)  Dont go crazy on the weekends.

Hello,

Great questions...this is how my journey has gone so far.

1. Motivationally, is it easier for you to stick to a food programme or an excersize programme?
Definitley easier to stick to a food program.  I find that it is not hard for me to eat sensibly with small portions...I don't let myself go hungry, just eat small healthy snacks between meals.  Exercise has been the hardest part for me, but since I've started doing it, it's getting easier.

2. What programmes have you tried in the past, and why haven't they worked (or what worked about them)?
Before I decided to educate myself on the subject of weight loss, I actually bought the South Beach Diet book, read the whole thing and decided to try the diet.  BIG MISTAKE.  This diet cut out pretty much ALL the carbs I was normally eating in the first phase, and about 2 days into it it started to make me really sick.  I would be nauseated all day and I think I did throw up once because of the lack of carbs.  It was honestly horrible, my body just couldn't handle it.  I tried to carry on with it but I felt too sick so I gave up.  This CC website I found by chance and it's great.  At first I was looking for a place to count calories, but I find that it is kind of a pain to always have to log everything, so I don't log I just eat low calorie whenever I can, and this is actually working for me and educating me and helping me successfully lose weight.

3.With excersize, do you prefer cardio, weight training, both, or something else? Basically for me, I enjoy cardio and strength/flexibility training.  The key is that it has to be FUN!   What I did was buy 3 DVD's...one is a dance DVD that I count as cardio, the other is a pilates video which I count as strength training, and the last is a yoga video.  I find that it offers me a great variation of different exercises and I haven't been bored with it yet.  It's a great idea if you don't want to join a gym or go to classes.

4. In a perfect world, what would your ideal programme consist of (example: I would have a personal trainer and a personal chef cook all of my food; I would have a stay at home nanny to watch my children, etc)

In a perfect world, I would have a personal chef and trainer to help me out.  Also, I think it would be cool to have some sort of device that attaches to the body that automatically monitors the exact amount of calories burned, and consumed in one day.  Would be a life saver!

5. What is your biggest barrier to your health and fitness goals? My biggest barrier is my own will power.  I have to try not to be lazy and get my ass up and exercising.

6. Looking back, what made you gain weight in the first place? I think I started gaining weight when I started using birth control, and also getting too comfortable with my boyfriend contributed to it.  Not to mention, he is skinny and pure muscle and can eat whatever he wants.  Must be nice!!

Hey!

I can completely relate to you.  I used to smoke all throughout the day but I ended up not quitting, but I have 1 cigarette at night before I go to bed.  Now throughout the day I don't even crave it at all.  You should try to cut down if you find it to be too stressful with working out.  I know I could quit if I really wanted to now with only 1 smoke a day.  You can do it!!

Hey there,

I am still down 5 lbs. from when I started 2 weeks ago, which feels great!  Can't wait to hit the 10 lb. mark.  Glad to hear that you are having a positive day, I am as well.  Usually at work my job is quite sedentary, but today I was asked to help organize some files which included a whole lot of lifting heavy things...I was sweating buckets!  So this was great so I got a bit of extra exercise today while doing my job.  Eating good, and planning on doing cardio tonight.  Good luck!
Weight Loss Calories VS. Carbs?? Apr 11 2007
21:39 (UTC)
5
Hey there,

I am no expert on this or anything but I can speak from my own experience/observations.  Basically what I think is if you are looking to lose a significant amount of weight and you want to do it slow and healthy, you should definitley try to stick to lower calorie foods.

On the other hand, my sister lost about 20 lbs. by cutting out most carbs that come from bread/potatoes etc. and not concentrating on calories.  In her case, she maintains a low carb diet ALL the time, this is why she has not gained the weight back.  This is probably the best way to go if you want to lose a small amount of weight quickly, but be prepared because you will most likely gain it all back if you don't maintain the low carb lifestyle.

What I try to do is watch my calorie intake.  But I also try to eat only whole wheat and I try not to overdo it with the carbs.  I hated it at first but it's really not that bad, you get used to it after awhile.   Anyways, hope this helps and good luck.
