Fitness HIIT Interval Cardio Mar 30 2008
17:17 (UTC)

I find the elliptical easier to use for HIIT sessions because it's easier to move at my own natural fast pace, rather than playing with the treadmill buttons.  I warm up for 3 minutes, do 5 intervals of 1 minute/high intensity and 2 minute/recovery, then 2 minute cool-down.  When I do HIIT I focus more on my heart rate and getting it up and then getting it back down in 2 minutes, which usually requires me going quite slow compared to the high intensity.

Fitness Squats or Deadlifts Mar 27 2008

I alternate squat and deadlift exercises, and have a rest day between them.  I do them first before my other exercises.  Also important if you do them first is to do a warm up with them.  Say use like 50% of the weight for a rep just to get your body warmed up.

Do what works best for you, if you enjoy what you are doing then there is no harm, people are just mainly giving suggestions. The main thing to realize is that people don't HAVE to go on a cardio spree to lose weight, but you can. I lost 50 lbs doing cardio (running) and doing light weights. But since I lost the weight I haven't been able to lose any more with this regimen, so I switched over to heavier lifting/less cardio and enjoy it so I do it and am getting results that I want.

And what you are doing sounds great as far as lifting, Some workouts I do are just 10-15lbs, and I'm sure as you get comfortable you'll start trying other things or making it over to the guy's side.  In my gym I go downstairs and am usually (unless the female trainer is there with a client) the only female down there, but I've gotten used to it, and even a couple times have had lifting conversations with them, they aren't as scary as they look :)

Just wanted to add how addicting the information in the book is. I read it over three months ago and to THIS day when someone asks a fitness related question I feel like what I read in the book was the information everyone needs!  I think all females do need to at least pick up the book from a local library and read it to lay some myths to rest.

Oh my gosh! These are hilarious! Ok...I have a gym complaint:

There is this older man at my gym (65-70) and he comes to spin class every once and awhile. Every time he comes into the class wearing normal athletic shorts, but before he gets on the bike he insists upon taking his shorts off. Now, I know this sounds ok...you're thinking he has bike shorts on underneath...WRONG! He is wearing hanes WHITE boxer briefs!!! It is sooooo disturbing. Somebody should tell him that those are not appropriate! UGH!

had to reply just to say ewww.

Love this book!! I am in stage 3 of the program and it's nothing but great!  I didn't realize how bad I was at balancing until starting this program, lol.  Glad others are reading and following the book!

I was moving benches in the free weight room around to give me more room. This guy comes up to me and asks if I need help moving anything and just to ask anyone (all guys around) if I need help moving something. I felt like lifting up the bench above my head, lol. I had also just finished a deadlift with like 65lbs, but he must not have been watching.

My most embarrassing thing has been when I was trying a new workout where I had to put my feet on a ball, I kept falling off and at one point my legs went like a foot over and a poster came down a wall, oops.

Don't worry, it's happened to most of us. Just go back to your plan and don't worry about it (but I have sympathy for you since I used to freak out too).

Nevermind just see your post above, glad things are better, and you will learn next time :)

Well first, I'd break up your work outs. Three days of just weights, then two or three of cardio and definitely a day of rest.

I like the lunges and squats, and I like the fact you're using free weights. I don't like the "light weights" and I definitely think you need to ditch the machines. Once again I'm whoring out this site, it'll give you some good routines to follow for weights

Stumptuous work out plans

I love the Stumptuous website and definitely agree you might just want to start following a plan like that.  I follow a plan from a weight lifting book and love it, after I finish the book I might try going out and planning my own.

Sorry if most of this has been said already, I'm lazy today to read replies, lol.

This does seem like alot of cardio, I think you need to allow yourself to have days off now and then and maybe on those days if you feel like you need to, go outside for a walk or something. Your body is adjusting to the cardio and if you don't do something else you probably won't get the results you want.

In the program I'm following (New rules of lifting for women), they recommend if you want to do Steady state exercise, do HIIT (just search about it) for 15 minutes of HIIT then continue with 30 minutes of steady cardio if you want too. I too used to be a cardio junkie, going to the gym four times a week and doing the eliptical/treadmill running for an hour each time. But I have learned there are more fun things out there and all that cardio is not needed.

Fitness question about weight lifting Mar 20 2008

Since you have been on this site for a year, have you been following this same plan and seeing results you like, or are you at a plateau of some sort? There is no difference in lifting and strength training. And I agree to go buy some heaver dumbells to incorporate and also maybe search for variations on squats and other strength exercises. Pilates isn't going to get you to build muscle but it a good supplement if you want to do it.

See some of us just get "annoyed" when people post questions about wanting to "tone" when I believe there is really no such thing, you build muscle and lose fat. I've seen amazing videos of healthy even skinny looking girls that lift their body weight. And girls get fed into their head that lifting weights make them look "big", now you look young so know this is just a learning experience for you.

Yeah it definitely has been one of the worst in awhile.  I'm just glad I got a pair of nice boots this season.  Glad the day is over and I don't have to deal with puddles.  My lab class went over by like an hour today, and then I had a meeting that went longer than expected too, I just want the weekend to be here!

I learned to enjoy the whole experience (lost around 55 lbs). I found out I love running, and also found healthy foods that I love too! Since I enjoyed working out (with great music of course) and eating these foods, following a healthy plan and exercise routine was easy and fun.  Well I shouldn't say easy, since things there were hard times so I should say easier.

I never talked to my friends about it, just that I was going to the gym.  When I started two other my friends joined me at the gym but now we are doing our separate things mostly.  Some of my friends haven't said anything to me, even though I'm sure they have realized that I've lost weight (around 55 lbs).  Family has noticed and always said something at the beginning.
Weight Loss possible to gain 3 pounds that you've lost recently over a WEEKEND? Feb 13 2008
14:28 (UTC)

This is why you should only weigh yourself once a week.  If you have to (and I also weight myself daily) don't worry about weight changes there are many reasons to why the scale changes daily, but only log your weight weekly and compare those.

Keep up your hard work and just keep at your 4-5 days a week :)

Weight Loss Gaining weight, not losing it...help? Feb 13 2008

You might want to up your weights that you lift.  If you are eating protein but not doing anything to build more muscle then the extra protein you are eating is not helping.  In 3 weeks you should be moving past the 5 lb dumbbells or at least incorporating harder variants of the moves you do.

I would also recommend as others have, do measurements (rely less on the scale if you are trying to gain muscle/lose fat) and log your food at least a couple days to see what your carb/protein/fat intake is like.

The program I am following *new rules of lifting* says to make sure you eat more on days you lift, especially making sure to get protein.  On days I don't I eat around 1700 (23 yo 5'4" 130lb female here), so days I do lift I eat close to 2000.
