The Lounge Christmas cards - what do you think? Dec 02 2007

Hi Sarah.  I don't send out many cards but I always try to include something special in each card.   Last year, I inserted a copy of "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".  In past years, I have put copies of a favourite recipe - the year my mother died, everyone got a copy of her famous Christmas Pudding recipe.  I haven't quite decided what will go in the cards this year but I'm thinking about it.  A nice poem, quote, short story - anything that you think the person would appreciate - can be enclosed with the card.

Is this how you guys really want to behave?  Wish each other well and be done with it.  You can theorize, define, clarify, condemn, condone all you want - in the end, we all just need to work at being good people.  And that involves tolerance, co-operation, respect and sometimes compromise.

My biggest disappointments have been (1.)  fruit juice (check out the sugar content on any of them to get a good surprise); and (2.)all the frozen food entrees geared to dieters (for example, Lean Cuisine) - check out the sodium content for a real eye-opener.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.... whatever.  I'm not an overly religious person but I strongly believe in "do unto others as you would have them do unto you".  If anyone takes a moment to wish me good tidings, I'm flattered and thankful and gracious about it.  People sometimes forget how to be gracious.  Every year at this time, I read Virginia O'Hanlon's epic question to Francis P. Church, editor of the New York Sun.  It reminds me how people should be treating one another and it gives me something to try to live up to.

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O’Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

About the Exchange Francis P. Church’s editorial, “Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus” was an immediate sensation, and went on to became one of the most famous editorials ever written. It first appeared in the The New York Sun in 1897, almost a hundred years ago, and was reprinted annually until 1949 when the paper went out of business.

When my daughter was a teen, it was a nightmare getting her to save any money.  She's now 26 and is doing great but it was a difficult learning curve for her.  She was always so responsible with everything else except money.  Learning how to be responsible with money has finally sunk in though.

My 16 year old son has his first job.  He's allowed to keep and spend 40% of what he earns.  60% has to stay in the bank to be invested.  He does not have a debit card.  He does not have a credit card.  I keep him to the old system of paying cash for what he wants.  He's been working since March and has saved enough to buy an x-box, a new electric guitar, clothes, shoes and all his entertainment money.

I don't fish my children out of debt and I don't lend them money so they can get something sooner.

Your daughter will be excited because for the first time in her life she has her own money to spend how she sees fit.  She must be made to realize that it comes with responsiblity too.

You're so right - it's impossibly hard to cut.  So I don't.

You can leave the squash whole but you must prick it with a fork all over (I use a BBQ meat fork).  Then place it in a shallow pan with a little water in it and bake.  Once it's cooked, it's easy to slice open and remove the seeds and the squash.

I think a trip to the grocery store is in order.  You need to look for good foods that have a slightly higher calorie content.  Maybe check out the cheese and dairy sections, a good breakfast cereal (Fibre 1, Kashi, bran) and don't forget the meat section - beef (lean), chicken.  Seafood is my favourite way to get a lot of vitamins - mussels are terrific.  Seafood is high for sodium, though, so remember to drink lots of water!

You really must get your calorie intake up to a minimum of 1200 - more if you are exercising daily.  Otherwise, your body will think it's starving and will strive to hold onto every little calorie it gets.

I'm not certain, but I've always suspected that teenagers require more sleep than an adult - so, at least 8 hours and more if you can squeeze it in.

Hello Stacey and Welcome!  You have found one of the best sites for getting support and advice in your weight loss journey.

Brouse around this site and check out all that it offers.  Under Logs, you will find a food log and exercise log.  You can also find the nutritional content of just about any food you can imagine.  Also check out the calorie count diet.

I really understand your depression.  I was thin my whole life until I became hypothyroid.  Now I have 50 pounds to lose.  Clothes don't fit - I can't buy the clothes I want to buy - etc., etc.  I reached a point where I decided I could either be depressed or I could lose weight.  I chose to lose weight.

I hope you don't mind but I added you to my friend list.  Please feel free to visit my journal anytime.

Weight Loss Sleep helps lose Oct 08 2007
16:37 (UTC)
A good sleep is essential to weight loss.  Our bodies need the consistency of a good night's sleep to rejuvenate.  Also, by denying ourselves proper sleep time, we rob our bodies of essential "down" time it needs to keep to a consistent metabolizing schedule.  If you can arrange to sleep consistent hours each day - and a minimum of 7 hours at that - you will find that you will feel better rested and able to get through your day (which for most of us is unreasonably hectic) much better.  Good Luck!

The 2 pound difference you experienced could have been a result of many things - water retention, the foods you ate (or didn't eat), etc.  but the lack of sleep would have confused your metabolism as well.

I live with 3 males (1 husband and two teenage boys) who are too thin!  There are always treats of one kind or another in the house.  I simply buy comparable products that are suitable for me and don't allow others to eat them.  Low calorie fudgsicles and veggie chips are a mainstay.

There is no way we can protect ourselves from all the temptations out there - but we can devise alternative methods to deal with them.  Good Luck!

Although I have not actually thrown my scale away, I tend to hide it in the closet a lot!  I DO depend on the scale at my chiropractor's office though - once every two weeks I get on it.  It is very accurate and also gives me incentive to not miss any chiro appointments!

I'm really good at getting stuck on plateaus.  Tips I have learned that work for me:

1.  drink water, water and more water.

2.  Change your diet as much as you can for 1 week (for example, if your diet was mostly meats and veggies, switch to eggs, dairy and fruit).

3.  Doing one cheat day won't work but you can try increasing your calorie intake by 200 calories per day for 1 full week - don't forget to drink lots of water.  After 1 week, reassess.

Good Luck!

I'm doing exactly the same way - searching for foods that are high in fibre but low in carbs.  Today I found a new cereal bar manufactured by Nature Valley:  it has 5g fibre and only 24g carbs per bar.  It also has Omega 3 and Omega 6 and low sodium at 80g.

For about a month now I've been limiting my carb percentages to about 40-45% and no higher than 125 grams.  I have hypothyroidism and this is the ONLY method that allows me to lose any weight at all.
Health & Support I think hypo thyroidism is coming back, what should I do? Jul 28 2007
02:24 (UTC)
Nope.  One of the first things my doctor ever told me (once I was diagnosed with hypo) is that the levothyroxine meds were going to be with me every day until the day I died.  I have never heard of anyone being told it was OK to quit the medication.  I would ask for new tests.

My latest blood tests show my TSH at 0.72!!!! That sure is better than the 38.6 it was 2 months ago!  My Free T4 (Free Thyroxine) is at 14.3.  I'm told that the normal range is 7.5 to 21.1 here in Canada which differs greatly from the levels in the States.  Perhaps it is different measuring units.

I was quite angry with my doctor however.  After phoning to get the results - twice - and leaving 2 messages, his secretary finally called me back to advise me that the tests were normal and "I was feeling fine!.  Then she hung up.

Admittedly, I do feel a lot better but I still have days where I'm just draggin' my butt.  But, I guess I "feel fine".

I started a low-carb diet 3 weeks ago.  It seems to really help and the scale is FINALLY (after 3 months being stuck at the same spot) going downwards.  In 3 weeks, I've lost 11 pounds and I truly believe it has been the low carb eating that has done it.
