| Weight Loss | Burn Meter?? | Dec 20 2007 21:16 (UTC) |
|
| the burn meter is based on your current weight. Each time you weigh lesser, you body burns lesser calories for a certain exercise than what you used to burn when you were heavier. Think of this way. You body burns a lot more to carry your weight around when one is at 250 pounds versus when one is at 150 pounds. | |||

That’s Awesome!!! I was a size 2X (that’s size 24) …. And I just recently bought a size 14/16 for myself the other day.. I’m feeling great about it… I would like to go down to a size 10 though… still working on that goal… the 16 size I bought are already a little loose… and I bought it 2 weeks ago… lol.. I hate to keep buying new clothes.. but I really needed them since I no longer could wear my big ones… but I did find some really old stuff in my closet which were size 14 and I took those out and tried them instead… I’m really proud of myself.. but I would really like to lose another 30 pounds (and a couple of sizes) J … |

Hi Shara: If i were you, i'd select sedentary and add activity over it, because dont forget, that although your metabolism might increase over time, your body also just keeps getting used to the exercise you do, which makes it easier for your body to do the same level or type of exercise after a while. Selecting light exercise level would mean that you are not going to log your activity seperately, because that does get included in your total calorie burn meter. |

| Just another thought, one of my colleagues tried one of these meal weight loss programs too, she did lose a bit till she was on the program. Once she stopped, she has put on more than what she had lost.
There is only one major drawback i see with these meal programs. getting back to real life and real food once you are done is not easy! I personally vouch for preparing fresh healthy meals that you can control the portions of. |

| Weight Loss | Totally lost.... | Jul 24 2007 23:53 (UTC) |
|
| Hi there. My first advise to you would be to relax. I have a few questions for you
1) Have you been running and swimming as an exercise in the past? If yes, then it may be time for you to change it, because your body is very contained and comfortable with your exercise routine, and the scale won?t budge. Try going to the gym and do some cardio and weights. That way you can vary your workout each day between workouts at the gym to give your body some challenges each day. 2) You have only started 2 weeks ago, so all is not lost. Try zig-zagging your calories(which you are already doing to a certain extent) a little more, like 1300 calories when you are sedentary, and 1600 when you work out. I would recommend to you however, to exercise 4 to 5 days a week. Which doesn?t give you many sedentary days. From my own personal experience, 3 days doesn?t seem to be enough for me to get the weight loss kick start. You may have the same issue. 3) Choose whole grains over refined. Get 3-5 servings of veggies, and 2 servings of fruit each day. Switch meat intake to fish and lean chicken. One must take 2 servings of fish in a week to get the benefits. Limit your fat intake to 30-45 grams of fat per day. One tablespoon has approx 15 grams of fat. 4) Do you drink enough water? If you don?t, you probably are retaining that water, and the scale wont budge due to this problem either. I drink anywhere from 12 to 16 glasses of water each day. 8 glasses is only the daily minimum, not maximum!!! 5) Take your vitamins, and get your thyroid checked. If you have noticed a change in your appetite, your weight, hairloss, constipation, these are all symptoms of an underactive thyroid. I started 5 months ago, and managed to lose 45 pounds, before I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. My doc was amazed I was able to lose so much inspite of having the condition (hypothyroid makes you fat, or makes weight loss hard). So if I can do it despite having a problem, I?m sure you can being healthy!!! When I started my weight loss, I used to only go for 20 minute walks 5 days a week, and play some golf and eat 1200 calorie diets. That?s all!!! No strenuous workout, and I did this for about 2 months, before I changed or increased my routine. 6) Lastly, Good Luck. And be patient!!! Look at it this way, you are eating less, AND exercising, you possibly can?t put on any weight, and there definitely has to be some weight loss due to the calorie deficit you create between burning and consuming. If the scale doesn?t budge today, it will budge tomorrow!! |

| Motivation | Negative calories? Do they exist? | Jul 24 2007 23:19 (UTC) |
3 |
| Hi Sarah, I believe that even if they do have negative calories, they really don?t make much of a difference, (as in if you eat only the so called negative calorie foods, you will never put on weight. I dont think thats true) I don?t think that?s possible. I?m a vegetarian, and my diet is mainly made up of grains, fruits and veggies, and eggs. I think the term negative calorie came into existence for those veggies and fruits, that are pretty low in calorie in nature, and are easily burned therefore don?t get stored as fat in your body even though they are carbs. Just the fact that they are a different set of carbs other than grains such as rice(which tend to end up as fat in your body if not burned) .
Another way to look at it is a pound of sweets is equal to a pound of veggies in weight, but you are probably not going to put on weight because of the veggies, but because of the sweets. |

| I had the same problem, after a month of trying to get fit? and I recently found out in my annual physical, that I have hypo-thyroid. Constipation is one of the symptoms. If you have never had this severe a constipation problem in your life before, then I would say you better get your thyroid checked with your doctor. So many things started to make sense for me when I was diagnosed, Constipation being one of them. | |||

| Ukon, i feel your pain! I have plantar fascitis and a heel spur. I got this condition when i was 242 pounds. Today I'm 197, and it doesnt so much anymore, although it does get strained after a long day walking, sometimes even when i just work out for an hour, but the pain usually is gone after a good nights rest. But that was not the case when i first got it, it used to pain for days together... the weight loss really helped it! I also have flat feet and pronation by the way.
I would recommend you not to run anymore, because it will cause you to get a heel spur(which is permanent by the way) I usually work out at the gym, walking on the treadmill, using a recumbent stationary bike(which takes off the pressure from your heel), and working with weights and some calisthenics. Try different types of exercises. Weights in the gym coupled with some cardio like i mentioned above will help you reach your goals. Swimming is also an excellent option, since it puts no pressure on your feet. And well, you do use thrice the effort in water than on land, so its ideal for weight loss. I also do step aerobics for about 5 minutes at the gym coupled with the cardio, but my plantar fascia starts to ache after that, so i dont strain myself on that perticular one. Stretching is very important when you have this condition though. If i were you, i would forget about running... trust me... you dont want to be where i am today! I have to live with the heel spur my entire life, and thats not a pretty picture. |

| loriklorik... i do know that exercise is definitely important to keep fighting the fat off.. .but i do disagree with one of your statements.. i have lost a whole lot of weight on 2 different occasions... but one of those times.. i was misinformed about the diet.. i was probably following a 1200 calorie diet... and i used to work out at the gym atleast for an hour 6 days a week...... its only years later how i had lost muscle in the process.. because the deficit in the calories expended and consumed was way too much... i was pretty strong when i was young... i could carry two 40 pound suitcases with ease... but after the 1st weight loss... i lost all that muscle.. and could hardly move one suitcase around... so i do believe... Diet is still very important when you exercise... too much of a deficit can have an adverse effect... and you can still lose muscle in the process...
in any case... i believe you will bound to lose everything when you are trying to lose weight.. that is lean and fat mass... i guess exercise just helps keep the lean mass on... as long you are eating enough... |

| i agree with sarah.. .it seems like bordering on paranoia if we keep weighing stuff we eat... sure they are estimates.. and since you are controlling your portions.. you couldnt possibly overeat so much as a 1000 calories a day... you would probably be off by a 100 to 150 calories.. and by the way... how would one weigh stuff when you go out to eat at a restaurant.. or while you are travelling... you still have to base it off of your own judgement... so i would say let your mind be the best judge of what and how much you eat... and estimate the calories that way... | |||

| Weight Loss | Do you drink your milk with or without sugar? | May 29 2007 23:06 (UTC) |
15 |
| Hi. When I started dieting, I used to drink 1% milk (because I cant stand non-fact milk taste) but then I switched to unsweetened soy milk, because I had a constipation problem, and looks like milk worsens constipation. I tried a few different types of soy milk, like plain soy milk(silk brand), low fat soy milk( light silk brand), and unsweetened soy milk (various brands), I would personally take the natural fat present in soy, rather than added sugar in the soy milk, therefore my choice would have to be unsweetened soy milk. After all, you are supposed to add some nuts to your diet for the nutrients, so why not the fat in the soy milk? | |||

| hi timsmom, i know its tough... and one shouldnt get discouraged looking at the scale... although i eat quite balanced meals everyday.. with a few cheat meals during the weekend... to tell you the truth.. i dont lose every time i jump on the scale.. my weight loss is pretty unpredictable.. there are times that i have been very good with my diet... but i dont drop even a pound.. and there are other times when i cheat a little.. and i drop almost 2 pounds the next day... keep your system guessing... is the key... i have come across a few plateaus myself... but if you are not over-eating... infact keeping a deficit... there is no way you can gain a pound... or stay on a plateau for too long... it will drop.. if not today.... then maybe next week.. or after a couple of weeks..
a cup of cooked rice is as good as having two chapatis.. calorie count wise... since i'm not too crazy about vigorous exercise...(although i have been through that a couple of times.. going to the gym 6 DAYS A WEEK and eating 1200 calories meals back in india... i have lost 80 pounds twice in my lifetime.. and put it on all back again) since i'm married.. i dont get enough time to go to the gym between my job and housework and cooking... thats why i walk during my lunch break.. its only a 20 minute walk.. but its something!!! this is the 1st time i have approached weight loss in this manner... and it seems to be working... pretty well.. infact i am losing slowly.. which is the key to keeping the weight off... about the coconut... i can understand your plight... i am a north indian married to a south indian... so there is no coconut in my cultural food.. but there is in his... and i pretty much cook vegetables his way.. but i leave the coconut out... he has gotten used to it... and i guess he accepts it now infact.. because he wants to lose weight too.. i only use coconut when i make chutney for idlis or dosas... even then... we dont make the thick variety.. just a little watery.. and i hardly end up taking 2 to 3 tsps of it.. since i hardly eat 4 to 6 small idlis.. since he is kannad... there is another spice they add to veggies called gurar pudi... in place of coconut.. so i use that.. i know it probably has some fat content in it... but after all.. we are still supposed to eat nuts and seeds.. and this is a seed.. |

| Hello everyone;
I'm indian too, primarily from India, now living in California. I have derived a way of healthy indian cooking, and it works very well for me. Typically, this is what i eat during the day: Morning: Warm water with lemon juice and honey. For breakfast, I either have 1 egg (I use oil spray when frying the egg) with one slice of 100% whole grain bread. AND 1/2 cup of soy milk with flax seeds and half cup of berries. OR 1 cup of cold cereal like uncle sam?s 100% whole grain wheat flakes with ½ cup of soy milk, 1 tsp flax seeds and ½ cup of berries. OR a veggie sandwich made with 100% whole grain bread. i personally use alvarado st. bakery breads, they are all 100% whole grain and are great. (weekends is a different deal, I usually cook something Indian for breakfast like poha or upma or idlis or dosa?s, but I cook it in very little oil for 2 people. I end up eating only one cup of cooked upma or poha.. which has about 1 tsp of oil, or 4 idlies or 2 dosas with 1 tsp of oil each) Lunch: 2 oil free chapattis, 1 cup of raw veggies, 1 cup of cooked veggies, ½ cup of dal or sambar sometimes. 1 cup of fruit. The trick is to use the right kind of oil like OLIVE OIL or HIGH HEAT SUNFLOWER OIL(heart healthy oils which help you lose weight) , and you don?t need so much to cook the sabji?s in. infact the upma and poha take more oil. Most sabjis, I use only 1 to 2 tsp of oil, and then add some water to cook it. It tastes just as good, and is very healthy. Dinner menu is pretty much like Lunch. Except that I also have a ½ cup of soy milk with flax seeds, honey, and ½ cup of berries. For snacks, I usually eat 2 cups of lite popcorn OR 2 pieces of khakhara (a gujurati delicacy which is low in fat and calories, available at any Indian grocery store) OR I make tandoor vegetables like paneer tikka along with mushrooms, onion, capsicum and tomato. That doesn?t need a lot of oil, and I bake it in the oven instead of frying it. The key factor is to add atleast 2 cups of raw veggies to your diet, 2 cups of fruit, cook the veggies in 1 to 2 tsp of oil, and don?t put oil in the chapattis. If I make white rice, I only eat 1 cup of rice(I measure it literally), and I eat 1 cup of raw veggies, and 1 cup of sambhar or dal or rasam whichever the case. I also take a few teaspoons of fat free yogurt. and i have a thumb rule, if i eat rice at one meal, i dont eat it for the next. i will switch to rotis or even a sandwich. This whole diet comes to about 1500 calories. I started 3 months ago, and I have lost 30 pounds since. I walk for about 15 minutes a day during my lunch break, play golf on the weekends, and I have a desk job. I make sure I sip on water ALL DAY LONG. I hope this helps. |

| Weight Loss | I keep burping! | May 09 2007 23:26 (UTC) |

| Hello all...
Just a notion? personally I believe burping from either ends (you know what I mean) is actually a sign of good digestion?. You also encourage that in babies? especially after they eat.. they have a burping session? to help them with their digestive process? this means that your body is actually passing the air naturally? before I started dieting? I never use to burp? NEVER.. but now? I do so every so often after each meal? I suppose the Vitamin C has also been helping me more than the dieting? because I noticed the burping started happening when I started taking 500 mg of Vitamin C (It helps me do the daily bathroom routine every morning, because I was so massively constipated) ? I can only think that it does good for you.. And if you feel conscious.. just use ?excuse me? each time? J ? |

| There are so many changes that I have made since I started, and its only been 2 months since I started,
- &n bsp; Not killing myself over going a little bit over my calorie limits for a day. Which by the way, I no longer feel like killing myself, because of the fact that when I eat a little more than my allowed calories for the day, I actually lose weight if I hit a plateau.. Something about Leptin levels going way down that doesn?t help plateaus. And eating well for a day or two brings it back up, and my weight goes down in the process. - &n bsp; I am a vegetarian, but I used to not eat fruits or fresh uncooked veggies. So I started adding those to my lunch and dinner meals. - &n bsp; Snacking on fruit, or Kashi TLC granola bars, unbuttered popcorn, or just making some oven grilled veggies to snack on. - &n bsp; Going for a 10 minute walk during lunch time when at work. - &n bsp; Adding just a tsp of oil to curried veggies (Indian vegetable dishes) - &n bsp; Learning to cook healthier. - &n bsp; Going organic and adding more whole grain to my diet. - &n bsp; Going for low-fat options wherever possible.. like sour cream, yogurt, milk or soy milk. - &n bsp; When I feel like eating chips.. I buy the ones fried in expeller pressed oil.. .which doesn?t add trans fat. - &n bsp; Checking my portions and calorie intake at every meal? - &n bsp; Cooking breakfast at home everyday. - &n bsp; Taking honey in my diet everyday, has actually curbed my cravings for sweets. - &n bsp; Adding lemon to my salad, instead of dressing. - &n bsp; Looking at the nutrition information when I shop. |
