The Lounge Phoenix Meetup: June 7 (Cosmic Bowling & Pita Jungle) Jun 09 2008

Awww...thanks, Melinda, for setting up this meetup! So sorry I couldn't stick around for bowling. I hope it was fun, though. :) And yes, the pooch survived (like there was any doubt that he would).

And no worries, Adrienne -- your "gory mouth issues" were entertaining (yeah, I know. I'm odd).

You rang? Sorry - I checked in earlier, but this thread picked up after I checked in :)

I have 2 suggestions for a meeting place:

1). Meet at one of the Trailheads for the Circumference trail (duh) at, say, 10, and then start the hike at 10:30 or so. This would give people sufficient time to get parked, etc. The only thing is, since I've never been there, I wouldn't know where to meet once we're actually there. That's where cell phones would come in handy, I guess.

OR

2). Meet at an off-site location (e.g., Biltmore Fashion Square mall, at 24th and Camelback) at 10:00 am, then take 2-3 cars to Piestewa at 10:30. The reason I suggest this is that I've been told that the parking areas at Piestewa fill up rather quickly and it might be difficult to park. I don't know what it'll be like on Saturday. If we were to meet at Biltmore, however, we have a fixed location for everyone to meet, and there's plenty of parking.

What do y'all think?

I've only recently gotten comfortable with the sleevelessness (is that a word?), but sleeves are okay, too. :)

The vitatop muffins sound like a great snack; I still have yet to find them in an actual store. The fruit leather sounds like a good option, too. Perhaps I'll visit Trader Joe's as well. :)

As for Pita Jungle, I've already decided that I'm ordering the biggest meal on the menu. Maybe twice. I'll wear my heart rate monitor like I did on the last hike, so I know how many calories I've burned and exactly how big of a "biggest meal" I can get. xD

www.rei.com :) The closest one -- in Scottsdale, anyway -- is near the Target at Cactus & Tatum.

They've got a nice selection of snacky stuff like Protein bars, Sharkies, jerky, etc., along with outdoorsy stuff. I got my Camelbak from there...now I just gotta stuff it with stuff.

I checked the weather for next weekend, too. I know it can change, but EEEK! It's gonna be in the 90s! I'm going sleeveless for sure. Does anyone know how long a 3+ mile hike at Piestewa will take? Curious. I'll have to do some checking.

BUMP. Heh.

Beef jerky's a good snack to bring (someone brought that on my South Mountain hike). I'm settled on fruit (bananas, grapes, maybe an apple), a couple of protein bars, maybe some jerky, some Sharkies (yummy gummi bears with electrolytes), and LOTS of water & Crystal Light lemonade.

Suddenly, I feel like makin' a trip to REI. :)

I think I'll pack fruit as well, and maybe some Energy Bars (bagel-like bars available at Costco). Maybe a protein bar, too. But yeah, fruit is a great choice: oranges, bananas, apples, etc. We can always brainstorm and create a list on this thread. I like that idea.

I would wear shoes with some traction; I wore my cross-trainers on the South Mountain hike (I don't have hiking shoes, either),  and they were fine. Anything less, though, and it might've been a different story. I'm not sure how steep the trails are at Piestewa, but coming down off South Mountain was the hardest part. That's where it was especially helpful to have shoes with decent traction. :)

As for a backpack and water, yes, bring LOTS of water. I brought 2 liters on my hike, and it was FAR from enough. Snacks are also good; I burned something like 2800 cals on the South Mountain hike, and all I had was a couple of Fiber One bars. NOT enough. Lesson learned.

Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!

K...so, now that we've established 10 am for the hike start time, and 1-ish for the lunch...we should probably figure out which trail we want to hike and meet at, yeah?

I looked at the Piestewa Peak link that Melinda provided, and it has some great info in it. Do we want to go with either of the two trails mentioned therein? The Circumference trail is the longer one, at 3.75 miles. I'm not sure how long it will take; the only thing I have to go on is that I hiked South Mountain last month, and 7-10 miles took roughly 6 hours.

I'll bring sunscreen (SPF 50) and a camera! I will probably also use a Camelbak, something I wish I would've had on my hike last month. :)

Oooh! This is gonna rock!!

10 works for me. I agree that we should get it in early enough to avoid the heat. I'd be down for bowling, too, if people want to do a 2nd meetup later in the day.

Hope you can join us, dbackerfan!! :)

The Lounge Job Hunting and Interview Tips, Please. Apr 04 2008

Good suggestions, all. I'll add the following:

1. If, in the "Tell Me About Yourself" section, you mention a skill or an achievement, provide an example to back it up. E.g., if you say you're highly organized, provide a *brief* example of a project or task where your organizational skills shone through.

2. As ignayshus mentioned, ask questions if you can during the interview. One question I try to work in is something to the effect of, "What do you like most/least about your job and/or working here?" I've found that people like to talk about themselves, and if you do a little bit of pre-interview research about the company for which you're interviewing, then it also shows an interest in them.

The above may not work in every situation or every interview, but I've had success with them. Good luck!

Yay! It'd be great if Marnee could join us, too!

I wish I enjoyed running more, too. I built up to 5K last fall, but have gone back down to like 1.5K. I'd really love to try a 5K race or a sprint triathlon this year, but I gotta train for it. Can't make it easy, can they? :P

As for me and my goals/accomplishments...call me Suze. I've lost about 50 lbs since Jan 2007, and I have about 10 left to go before I reach that magical "healthy" BMI of 25. I've been mostly maintaining at 170ish for the last 4-5 mos, with a few blips here and there on the scale. My hope is to break that 170 threshold in the next few weeks and not look back. I've stepped up my workout regimen once again, so fingers crossed.

And to bring it back on topic (to keep the mods happy)..."noonish" could be noon, 12:30, 1. I've got the whole day on the 26th, so whatever works for the group works for me. And what Melinda said -- if some of you can't join us for the whole thing, then by all means, consider joining us for the lunch or the hike. :)

What if we were to start around noon-ish? I would agree that a mid-afternoon hike would probably be hot -- especially a few weeks from now. As for the order, I would suggest hiking first and then Pita Jungle after the hike, since it might be easier to hike on an emptier stomach. :) We could always snack during the hike, too (in fact, we *should* snack during the hike). As Erin pointed out earlier, though, we may want to note peak usage of the trails, so that we avoid parking issues, etc. I'm open to suggestions, however. :)

I'm glad BF #2 is joining you on the hike, Melinda! He sounds like a great catch! Yay!

Here's some info on Piestewa Peak trails:

http://phoenix.gov/PARKS/hikphgud.html

And on Camelback Mountain:

http://phoenix.gov/PARKS/hikcmgud.html

Do we know how far and for how long we want to hike? I would recommend a shorter, easier trail to accommodate all experience levels (seconding what Melinda said).  I've never hiked either one, so I'm open to whatever y'all decide.
Pita Jungle at 44th & Indian School sounds good to me!  Yay - this oughta be cool!!

My name is Suzanne, btw. But online, mostly everyone calls me Suze. :)

I'm in! Wherever, whenever (though weekends work best, as I'm sure they do for most peeps), and whatever. As for activities, the only suggestions I can come up with are something like miniature golf or a short, easy hike (though, admittedly, I'm not much for hiking).

A late response again (sorry!), but CW was 168.8, as of Saturday. I could actually come close to hitting my goal of 164...

I usually get in around 1200 cals during the day, and another 500-600 cals at night (after my workout, of course).

Well, it sounds suspiciously so, Missy. I mean, it's not like CC is porn or has any objectionable content that would warrant it being blocked.

Damn, that sucks!
