Flax seeds are really similar in size shape to sesame, just a bit darker - you can bake with ground flax sprinkle it in sauces etc, whole flax seeds are pretty tossed ontop of salads or sprinkled ontop of rice or pasta dishes. It really doesn't have much flavour so put it in anything. I keep flax seed on my desk at work and put a few spoon fulls on top of whatever im eating (yogurt, cereal, rice dishes, etc) its very versitile. |

From what I understand about her post she doesn't have any specific problems besides the weight gain, and her doctors response to what she should eat is a generic "eat less grease and more vegetables, more whole grains and less junk food" response. Also cutting back salt during pregnancy to prevent swelling is an old wives tale and has been disproven in recent years. If she is having problems with water retention and swelling the only way to cure that is to make sure at her weight to get 3L of water a day. Dehydration is the main offender with regards to ankle swelling. |

Remember that eating healthy in pregnancy is no different then eating healthy in general, you just need a few more calories to support your little bean. Don't be to strict on yourself, all of us on calorie count have learned the hard way that complete deprivation will lead to binges and failure. Start keeping a food journal and logging your calories, for being pregnant you need about 300 calories more then what the burn meter estimates for you. Don't try and lose weight at this stage eat maintenance calories + 300. Personally I focus on getting 25g of fiber a day if I can achieve that the rest of my calories I do with as I please. Fiber is important because it will keep you feeling full there is nothing wrong with eating a lot of fruit if you stay within your calorie limits, and there is nothing wrong with canned vegetables, they are not as nutritious and they are higher in salt but unless you have high blood pressure or some other condition which is affected by salt it's not really a big deal. I'm 7 months pregnant as well and I can't imagine making a huge diet overhaul now, just take things one step at a time, focus on limiting your calories to maintenance + 300 to stop over gaining, focus on getting the fiber (this will have the benefit of eliminating white flour products from your diet) and once you have those things as good habits start slowly just swapping out the bad stuff for good. I've gained 25lbs so far but it's hard when your pregnant my body has turned into a sponge a lot of your gaining could simply be related to your hormones deciding it's time to gain weight.

I quit cold turkey, I was drinking strong black coffee all day (easily like 8 - 10cups) it was easiest that way, don't buy it, don't make it. I had a headache for a week and then I was clean off the stuff :P Now if I even drink coffee 2 days in a row then stop I get a headache the day after if I don't have any. I am a caffeine junky lol. I have tried to replace it with tea etc but tbh it's not as good lol so I just drink water. I guess it's better for me anyways :p

| Pregnancy & Parenting | dieting and the pill, do the two combined affect you getting pregnant? | Aug 03 2009 18:52 (UTC) |

With your period being so varied it's going to be hard to conceive, there is only 4 days per cycle that you have a good chance of conceiving on. Have you been charting your basal body temperature? If not I recommend you do that all you need is a digital thermometer, it will allow you to confirm if you are even ovulating and if you are ovulating tell you which days you are the most fertile. It took me a 1.5yrs to get a regular cycle back after stopping birth control, but I was able to conceive without a problem when we were ready. Your body may just need more time to adjust. |

Well I like to think of myself as extrememly fertile because it took us 8 days of trying to get pregnant lol. But getting regular periods after stopping birth control is another matter. I was on the pill for 9yrs prior to going on the pill I always had a regular cycle but it took 1.5yrs to get that regular cycle back. I stopped taking the pill not because I was ready to have a baby but because I wanted my body to be natural again. If I were you I would get off the pill as soon as possible and use condoms for prevention until you are ready to "stop preventing". Every woman is different and stopping the pill now will increase the odds of your body being back to normal sooner rather then later. |

Sounds like my hubby :P I told him how we would never feel completely ready and how it would probably be almost 2yrs away before we had a baby if we started trying now since it takes on average 6 - 12 months to conceive. Not to mention we have a couple of friends who are having troubles conceiving even though they are young. He wasn't totally convinced but he stopped using condoms so I took that as he was on board... back counting the dates a bit 8 days later I was pregnant lol |

| Pregnancy & Parenting | Doctors v.s. Breech Babies | Jul 17 2009 22:20 (UTC) |

I think they instantly recommend C-Sections because it is easier for them and especially in the states they probably get paid more since a C-Section is MAJOR surgery. Why else would a lot of doctors completely neglect to tell women that the baby can be turned manually? Midwives have been turning breech babies from the outside for hundreds of years. Why else would they not even give the woman the option after stating the pros and cons? It's easier, faster, they get paid more, and they can schedule you at their own convenience - nobody likes working weekends. |

Putting the work issues aside, do you really think a relationship would work out with somebody so much older? If you were to pursue things and let yourself fall in love and best situation get married in a few years how would that turn out? He would probably be 50 when your children were born, he will probably die decades before you, he will be old and tired when you are barely middle aged and still full of life. Personally that isn't the kind of life I would want to try and pursue and the longer you let things go the harder it will be. I'm not saying it couldn't work out, but you say you like him and could probably grow to love him - I am sure there are lots of younger guys you can grow to love too. |

This is definately water gain, please don't worry or get discouraged. One thing you may want to check is how much you increased your sodium with the calorie increase - my body can gain 6lbs over a weekend of eating salty yummy food and lose it again within a few days of drinking my daily 80oz of water and eating normal. |

It may just be something you have to live with. I HATED cleaning my room as a child and my mother and fought and fought about it she resorted to every tactic in the book, she would sit and watch me I would sit on the bed and do nothing hating her every minute she was there, she would ground me I would go out anyways with the logic well she can ground me for eternity eventually I'll move out and it will be all erased, she would physically drag me into my room take everything out and throw it away I didn't care it just made me hate her more for trying to control my space. To this very day ( I am now 29 ) I do not keep a clean bedroom, laundry is all over the floor and I never make the bed ( it drives my husband nuts lol ) and I do not have a good relationship with my mother she was so controlling and we fought from when I was about 10 until I moved away for university, every thing she says or asks of me instantly makes me want to do the opposite. My brother and her on the other hand are the best of friends, he just always did what she said and smiled. Mother daughter relationships are very different then mother son relationships. I wouldn't fight and make such a big deal about it - let her feel like it's her own space and give her some privacy and independence and stop going into her room at all. At 10 yrs old she isn't a baby anymore and the more you fight her the more strain it will put on your relationship. Tell her if she wants her room painted then it has to be clean and if she doesn't clean it simply won't be painted. Maybe she doesn't even want it painted who picked out the new bedroom furnishings? Tell her if she wants her laundry done to have it all in a hamper and by the laundry machine on laundry day, she may end up wearing dirty clothes for a couple of weeks but once the kids at school tease her she will make sure it's ready for the wash.

lol Bier I can completely relate. I had my 29th birthday Feb 6 and told my husband I wanted to start trying, we also want to move back home and what better time to do that while on paid 1yr maternity leave, right? I calculated the dates Feb was the earliest I could get pregnant and be eligible for maternity leave because I had recently started a new job. Hubby was a bit nervous but I told him it generally takes 6-12months to get pregnant, and then it takes 9 months to make the baby so we wouldn't actually have a baby for almost 2 years, he was still saying he wasn't sure about my "crazy baby plan" but he did stop using condoms, so I took that as he was on board :P March 3 I got a BFP and back counting that means we concieved right around valentines day - so instead of the year I promised him it took us 8 days lol. |

It's impossible lol. My husband has the opposite problem his BMI is barely 19 bones poke out of him and a size 30 pant is loose on him. Recently the doctor put him on iron supplements because he is anemic. I give him food all day long he eats maybe half of it. I put plates of fresh baked goodies on his desk beside him, a week later I throw them away mostly untouched. You might start lovingly teasing your hubby a bit about the love handles, or if you have been working out beat him at arm wrestling or something "manly" to shake him down to reality :P Do you have a big garden? Plan some landscapping and get him to go out and help with it (my husband always says no to those types of things when I ask him but if I am out there doing it myself he always drags himself out to help so I do it "right" within 30mins), or try competing a little with him on bicycle rides. |

Some adults honestly don't know any better. My husband is European in school from a very young age they were taught all about healthy eating, nutrition, and exercise. Very different from the education I received a few mentions about the three food groups and a reminder to brush my teeth everyday. They don't have the commercials we do on TV either. My little nieces and nephews happily eat a dark rye seeded bread (a staple in Denmark) with liver pate, and fresh tomato slices - how many toddlers in North America would even touch that kind of food. When I was a kid my parents were very relaxed about food, they bought wholesome food and I could just take what I wanted. Not knowing any better I often ate cheese and mayonaise sandwiches on thick slices of fresh french bread, I would easily drink 4 glasses of milk with dinner and my brother and I often mixed our own hot chocolate in the biggest glasses we could find (beer mugs pretty much). I was a fat kid not because I got a lot of candy but because I had no idea about nutrition and niether did my parents. My parents both ate whatever they wanted as well but because they both worked fairly labour intensive jobs they were a normal weight, unlike my brother and I who sat all day at school and then planted infront of the TV/video games in the evening. I can honestly say I knew nothing about nutrition and healthy eating besides what I saw on TV before I joined calorie count when I was 27 and I think that is a horrible thing and the whole idea of nutrition portion sizes healthy eating is a subject severley needed in our school systems. Worse then kids on the train with a bag of cereal, have you been to Denny's lately? 400lb mothers feeding their toddlers gigantic icecream sundaes for breakfast/lunch and dinner while they shovel in a couple thousand calories of lumber jack slams and a large soda. |

I have a master's in Computer Engineering it took me 6yrs to get it, now I have what some would call a dream job for my field but I hate sitting alone in my corner all day with very limited people interaction, my interests in life have changed so much I'm simply not interested in my field anymore. If I could do it all over again I would go into Chiropractic and have my own practice.

Ahh I had slipped 25lbs before getting pregnant, but I like to think it is all just baby weight. It makes me feel a little better lol, and then I don't have to admit to anybody else that I just got lazy! Quitting smoking is definately harder to do then get pregnant! If you ladies have the willpower to do that you can definately get back on the healthy eating train, my DH has quit smoking like 4 times and it makes him so miserable I am almost relieved when he starts again! I've never been a smoker but I did quit drinking coffee, I used to drink it all day at work you would never see me without a cup of coffee in my hand, and then I would drink a couple cups in the evening I can easily say a min of 10 cups a day (luckily I drink it black) - if i went a day without coffee I wouldn't be able to get out of bed the next morning because of a wickid caffeine withdrawl headache. Come to think of it I think my weight started going up after I quit coffee, there is just something soothing about having a warm cup in your hand that makes you not need to find something to eat in the kitchen. One day about a year ago on a health kick I decided to give up, it was probably for the best I can't imagine going through coffee withdrawl while being all pg & hormonal :P |

My girlfriend has two girls and was telling me how much more fun girls were then boys, and how she hoped I would get a girl too. Secretly I wanted a boy though so I am really glad :) I know how miserable I was to my mom when I got older and I just want mama's boy whom I can spoil rotten. I hope he turns out just like DH with blond hair, blue eyes, a dent in his chin and a mischievous little smile :) DH has some pretty strong genes, his brother, dad, grandfather if you take a picture of them all at the same age and you can hardly tell who is who so if he doesn't end up looking like DH it will be some sort of fluke lol. I am already planning some sort of space / rocket ship themed room for him :D.. though DH would rather have a farm/tractor theme he isn't going to win that. I have to mold my little rocket scientist from a young age :P |

I completely understand what you are saying! I used this site to lose 40lbs and finally be at a healthy bmi (barely but I felt good!) - then I thought I could maintain it alone. Well one day almost 2yrs later I stood on the scale and BAM it read 176lbs! I don't know how I let it happen, shortly after I dragged my sorry **** back to CC I became pregnant and now the most I can do is try to moderate my gain, which is impossible when I can flucuate 6lbs of water in 2 days because my body has turned into a sponge lol. I am at 20 weeks now and have gained 14lbs at my last appointment my doctor mentioned I have been gaining too much I felt so ashamed! I am only 10lbs away from being 200lbs and the next 20 weeks are when the baby is actually going to gain weight! I stopped weighing myself lol if I never see the number 200 on the scale that means it didn't happen right *sighs*. I have upped my cycling and walking distances (but not intensity because I am to far along for that) and am watching my calories very closely so hopefully I only gain the minimum 0.5lb/week for the next 20 weeks. *bigger sigh* |

Personally I find men who shave their body hair really unattractive even though I love a clean shaven face. In my opinion it's unmanly and speaks to them being either insecure or kind of prissy, this also goes for guys who obviously shape their eyebrows and prissy for me is not an attractive trait in a man. My DH is not a hairy guy, he has like 2 chest hairs and one day I may just call him on his on-going threat to grow a beard (because I really don't think he can). If he one day decided to up and shave his legs I would tease him mercilessly until it grew back :P If you have been cycling for 30 years and doing fine with your leg hair I would just keep it where it is :) |

| Weight Loss | How Do Some People Have The Self Discipline To Always Stay Thin? | Jun 17 2009 22:32 (UTC) |
15 |
"Anyone who just eats what they feel like every day is gonna be obese" The reason this statement isn't true is because what people "feel like" can vary greatly. As an extreme example if all a person ever wanted to eat was celery they could eat as much as they wanted and never be obese.
I try to figure out how my husband does it, he is naturally thin borderline underweight, eats whatever he wants whenever he wants and does not excersise. 1. He gets bored of eating ( I know! he will have a full plate of food and only eat half when I ask if he wasn't hungry he simply says he is bored of eating said thing ). This also prevents him from eating a bag of chips or box of chocolates in one shot, he gets bored of eating the same thing. This most commonly happens with one-dish meals like a casserole or a pasta dish where everything is together and in his opinion tastes the same. 2. He is very picky about what he eats and as a result rejects a lot of the food on his plate i.e. he doesn't eat the crust on pizza, there is a bit of fat on the meat so he cuts that piece off because he hates the taste of fat, there is a small spot on the potato he cuts that part off because it's gross, part of the side dish touched the ketchup/sauce so he can't eat that part etc etc. 3. He will literally forget to eat or is simply to lazy to bother, often I come home from work and when he greets me at the door, I ask him what he had to eat that day.. athe answer is usually "nothing" or "toast" when I ask if he is hungry he has to think about it before answering. Even though I leave tins of baked goods all around him to encourage him to eat more. Me on the other hand, I see something I want to eat or even just think of something yummy and my mind convinces my body im hungry and can't live without consuming said item even if i have just eaten a full meal. |

Your starting stats are exactly the same as mine were and I have a completely sedentry job (I'm a computer programmer). I also started with 1200 cals to begin with, and was starving at first, but after a month I wasn't starving anymore. After 2 months I stopped getting a period (which is a bad thing) so I upped my cals to 1400-1500 and started steadily loosing 1 - 2 lbs a week with no adverse side effects. Most people lose more weight in the first month then afterwards but it's just water weight from drinking the mass amounts of water a healthy lifestyle demands. I would increase your calories and your water intake for better results. |

I don't know if how much sleep you get will affect it, from my impression it's just a total body at rest temperature. I would try charting using http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ It's the site I used and other people have recommended it too, and just see how it turns out. It can take a couple of months to establish your pattern and the site allows you to set a standard time when you take your temperature so you can pick your morning wake up time for that, and days when you take your temperature at a different time will show up as an open circle on your chart so it's easy to see which days you were working nights vs days. You also get free VIP membership i.e. access to the forums for the first month so you can ask there about the shift work thing and see how other people have been dealing with it. |

I personally find that high protien breakfast with some fats keeps me full until about 1:00 wheras then a carb laden breakfast has me snacking by 10:30. Today for example I had 2 eggs a turkey sausage and a slice of wholegrain toast, works out to just over 400cals. |

It is important to chart you temperature as soon as you wake up, preferably while still lying in bed and have the thermometer right beside you. If you get up and move around before taking your temperature your body generates heat and can mess it up, remember the changes you are tracking in BBT are very small sometimes just 0.1F so movement affects them very much. If you are working shifts I would recommend having two standard times you measure your temperature, 1 time for working days and 1 time for when you work nights and make a note on your chart, that way you can start to notice a trend for example: When you wake up at 6am your temperature is generally 1F lower then when you wake up at 6pm |

So you can keep track of what you eat - which enables you to analyze your foods and receive the following:
