Weight Loss Would like to lose 100+. Oct 01 2009

I'm looking to lose about 100 also.  My biggest challenge is not letting 1 bad decision snowball into fifty bad decisions.

i.e., buying a little, 1-oz bag of chips at work.  And then saying, "oh, I screwed up with the chips so I may as well eat this ginormous cookie too" when what I should do is say, "ok, my afternoon snack is about the same number of calories as the chips.  Skip the snack for today."

Do an immediate U-turn back into good habits.

Good for you, and thanks for starting this thread!

My worst binge was just last night(!) -- DiGiorno stuffed crust pizza -- and I felt so sick this morning I actually called in to work.  I've NEVER done that before and I feel like a piece of @#$# for doing it.

I've known my own triggers for a while -- cheese and chocolate -- and today while I was home I did some minor purging of the cabinets.  Fortunately (unfortunately?) there wasn't much left to get rid of.  But I did throw away the leftover pizza and promptly dumped cantaloupe guts over it so I wouldn't be tempted to retrieve the pizza out of the trash.

Thanks for the replies!

Frankly, I'll be over the moon to be under 150 -- the lowest I've ever been as an adult is 154.  But I'll keep an eye on the obsessiveness the lower I go.

Foods A small revelation regarding how/what to eat Apr 01 2009
02:33 (UTC)

Sometimes just having the sweet stuff instead of the healthy stuff is enough to keep a binge at bay.

(I learned a few years ago at a graduation party that if I ate the frosting off the cake it was just as satisfying as eating the cake with the frosting.  but I've always preferred frosting to cake.)

My god, yeah!

Rachael's ideas of "healthy" and "cheap" never fail to amuse and infuriate me.  Her idea of making a more budget-friendly osso bucco was to use ground veal instead of whole veal cutlets.   *headdesk*

And then by claiming her goulash was healthy because it had tomatoes (which are a vegetable, doncha know) and that would clearly make up for all the butter, oil, and fatty meat in it.

I hate tuna salad (hate mayo/Miracle Whip) but I'll put tuna into a simple marinara and put it over pasta.  Lately I've been melting a slice of 2% American cheese over "dry" tuna and toast for a tuna melt.

And then jelly beans.

And every year my mom buys my brother and me our own Sayklly's fudge egg.  Something like 8 servings per egg and easily over 100 calories per serving.

Ah, comes the dawn.

If your mom "went out of her way" to find someone to approve her for this ridiculously extreme diet then I can understand why she doesn't want to listen to reason.

VLC diets are really, really tough to stick to so hopefully she won't be able to stick to it for very long.  If she does, though, she should consult a REAL doctor.

Weight Loss I am sure you have all heard this same story before but... Mar 26 2009

Couple other things to consider:

If I'm "good" for a while, and then have a splurge day, it seems to help convince my body it's not starving and makes it more willing to let go of the weight.  But then, I have to go back to being "good" and I can't have more than one splurge day a week.

The other thing I can think of is a possible thyroid problem, especially if you've noticed some swelling in the front of your neck.  But I'd try the other suggestions first before getting your TSH tested.

Foods skim, 1% or 2% milk... which has the most health benifits?? Nov 19 2007

mikelane,  24 ounces of milk a day is old, old advice.  When we were cleaning out my great-aunt's estate last month I found a diet pamphlet copyrighted 1950 and it suggests drinking at least 3 cups of milk a day.  (Kids were encouraged to have 4 or more cups of milk a day, and not skim milk either.)

and no, the pamphlet was not sponsored by the dairy companies.

But personally, as long as I'm getting about 1000 mg of calcium a day (and not all in one sitting) I'm good with what I eat/drink.

Sometimes I'll use Tumaro's whole-grain soft tortillas for the base.  Each is 100 cals with less than 3 g of fat, TONS of fiber and a touch of protein.

1/4c part-skim mozzie = 80 cals

1/2c sauce = 70 cals

That's 250 cals in total.  Though I have to admit I like the South Beach chicken pizzas.  350 cals, plus carrots and celery is a perfect meal.

Meringue cookies -- egg whites and sugar (or half sugar, half splenda.)  Sorry I don't have a recipe on hand; I know there are a ton floating out there on the web.

Same with pavlova -- it's an Australian dessert with a "cake" made of meringue and topped with fruit and optional whipped cream.  Beautiful, tasty, and pretty low cal.

I agree with mop.

(I too know the joys of mopping up drippy yolk with a piece of whole grain toast but I am a "young person" with genetic high cholesterol so I keep those moments to a minimum.  Makes it that much more special.  That, and I don't like yolks done any other way.  Hardboiled, scrambled, omelets -- yuck.)

Pork tenderloin, trimmed of visible fat, is lean and tender and yummy!

Farmed fish don't scare me; I've visited the local fish farm.  It's fine.  (Besides, wild fish are way expensive where I live.)  Seafood like shrimp and scallops (though also on the expensive side) are higher in cholesterol but virtually mercury-free and low in saturated fat (which is what raises blood cholesterol.)

Some vegetarian burgers are pretty good though I can tell the difference in flavor and texture.  They're better crumbled up into casserole type dishes.

Glad to hear you're feeling a little better -- maybe you just needed to rant.  (Darn hormones!)

I don't think all your hard work went out the window.  You made yourself healthier in the past (even if it was just a little bit) and if you keep making healthy choices like moving as much as you can and eating nutritionally, it won't be so bad.

(If your leg hurts so badly you can't walk, of course you're going to gain some weight back.  Don't let you OB give you too much flack for that.)
Weight Loss What are your "realistic" holiday goals? Nov 13 2007

I'm not going to try and lose.  I'm going to aim for maintenance (and if I should lose a pound or two, cool.)

I WON'T eat a lot chocolate crinkles quickly and early in the season "because they get dry and hard so quickly."  If they get dry and hard, I am not obligated to eat them, even if they're microwaved in a damp paper towel.

I WILL eat lots of vegetable-rich soups to stay warm and full.

I WON'T eat anything I like only somewhat at the Thanksgiving or Christmas table.  Those calories are reserved for the OMG-I-looooooove-this food (i.e. mashed potatoes vs. sausage stuffing.)

I WILL eat sensible portions, even of my favorite stuff.

I WON'T eat until bloated, only until reasonably satisfied.

I WILL drink a lot of water (and some diet pop.)

I WON'T nibble out of boredom.

I WILL keep calorie-free beverages and sugar-free gum handy at all times to keep from nibbling out of boredom.

I WON'T try to force my body into a dress that's still too small.

I WILL wear a body-shaper, not only because it smooths out my silhouette (and makes me look sexy!), but because it keeps from from eating more than I should.

First, it's not good to feel starving.  It could be that you're eating a good amount of calories but you're not eating a lot of bulk so you feel empty.

Case in point: egg and cheese burrito = 450 calories, versus

2 egg whites, 2 slices of toast, a cup of skim milk, 2 medium apple = 415

Way more food and still has fewer calories with more nutrients.

As for stopping yourself binging right now, try drinking a large amount of low-cal liquid like water or diet pop so you have a "full" feeling, then chew a stick of sugar-free gum.  It'll keep your mouth busy and may trick your brain into think, "oh, I've eaten."

If (when) you get bored with chicken vary it up with white fish or pork tenderloin.  (Both are as lean as chicken, white fish even more so, with comparable levels of protein.)

Almost anything you can batch cook freezes well.  Chicken and rice pilaf, pasta with marinara and parmesan, jumbalaya, chili, stroganoff (no sour cream -- sometimes it turns funky).

Check out soup recipes under the Recipes tab.  There's a ton of them and you can play around to your heart's content.

Don't freeze mashed potatoes, though.  I tried it once and they came out all weird and chunky, very bad texture.

Pros: preportioned, convenient, cheap when on sale, the good ones at least try to add some vegetables and whole grains.

Cons: high sodium, may be too small of portions for some, is almost always lacking in vegetables and protein.

It's up to you.  I buy some only when they're on sale and then they have to fit into my "3g fat or less per 100 calories rule."  (I'm one of those who has to add some carrots and an apple.)

More often I'll cook extra portions of chicken and rice, pasta with sauce, whatever and freeze some for convenient lunches.

Stella, can I have your cosmic brownies?  i admit it -- I love them.

I can't stand Krispy Kreme.  Gooshy with oil and disgusting.

the worst food I can think of is Hardee's Monster Burger.  Although their new melt-whatever might be a close second.  Almost any kind of bakery baked good is pretty wretched too, no matter how good they taste.
