The Lounge Dating a Mexican? Apr 03 2007

No, not dating a mexican/hispanic man, actually married to a white guy.  But, I do live in Guatemala and have observed how most of my friends eat non-processed foods.  I used to think it was because all the processed foods here are imported, and therefore more expensive.  I can buy a half dozen bananas for 25 cents when a package of oreos costs over 4 dollars!

But I also think that my friends have not yet been contaminated with the fast-food, fast-pace, unhealthy lifestyle that I come from.  Although, unfortunately that is changing here in Latin America as more and more fast food restaurants appear, Pepsi and Coke factories are everywhere, and places like Walmart are buying out the local grocery store chain.  Obesity is on the rise here, and no one seems to be aware of it (maybe where the States was 20-30 years ago).

People here tend to eat home made meals 3 times a day!  Even kids at my girls' school are brought homemade chicken or soup and fresh tortillas every day at noon!  I, on the other hand, was doing what my mom did, sending peanut butter and jelly, packaged cookies, chips, and a juice box. . . until I found calorie count, and decided to encourage better eating habits in my kids!

So, kudos to your boyfriend!  He's on the right track!
The Lounge Why is "moderation" so hard for Americans? Mar 12 2007

I agree that we tend to eat too fast.  My grandma always says you should chew each bite 25 times (try doing that with mash potatoes!).  She says it helps with digestion and gives your body a chance to tell you it's full before you've eaten more than you should.

prdmommyof3:  I live in Guatemala and when I got here was surprised at the size of homes here (very small) even the very wealthy do not have the square footage that a normal American middle class home might have.  So, I think you are right about us liking everything big.

Sarah_11235, I agree, accesibility has a lot to do with it!  Also, advertising, I feel like food and other things are in our face everywhere we turn.

I'm glad someone brought this up!  I used to be a morning pooper, religiously, what my husband and I would call the "AM BM".  But since starting cc sometimes I go days without, and when I do it is a different consistency and not very much.  I'm not in pain, just confused. . .

das1988 - I didn't mean to offend you, sorry if I did.  I guess I'm reflecting more on my own trouble with moderation

zaika - true, every country and culture has people who do follow moderation.

Just thought I'd start a dialogue about something I was wondering about. . .

What is the purpose of Lent?  What does it mean to you?

As a kid, we always celebrated Lent to prepare our hearts for Easter.

Last night read an excerpt from a book about fasting things like criticalness.  Decided to try it today, it is harder than I thought.  I'm trying not to say any critical remark, which includes agreeing with someone else's critical remark.

I usually always give up some food. . . but that has other motivations (i.e. to lose weight).  So I decided to give up sleeping in. . . too hard!  I've aleady slept in a couple of times.  So, now I've decided to give up shopping (except for mandatory grocery shopping).

I have stretch marks from pregnancy on my belly, thighs, and boobs.  I bought expensive cream to try to get rid of them and it didn't work.  I've been told that short of a tummy tuck (which I am NOT open to) I'll have them for the rest of my life. . .fun.

My girls like to point out the ones they gave me, the oldest "gave" me the ones bellow my belly button, and the youngest the ones above.  I guess it's a memory of childbirth that will live with me.

Fitness Pilates Mar 01 2007

finallyready, thanks for you input about pilates.  I have a question for you. . . I go to the gym all the time, I love it!  I've seen results doing classes (spinning, pilates, yoga, hip hop, aerobics), the ellipitical trainer, and abs.  I also worked with a personal trainer for a couple months last year, which I liked, but it was expensive.  Yesterday a PT came up to me at the gym and tried to sell me on his program.  I don't lack motivation, I don't lack discipline, the thing I lack is knowledge about how to firm up specific areas.  I don't feel like I need to invest a ton of money to learn that, couldn't someone just tell me? I have a high respect for people in your profession and I believe that PT's are very helpful, but at my gym I feel a little like the PT's don't really teach me, they just get me to rely more and more on them so I keep paying them.  What should I do?

Oh Yes, liv4aco!  I forgot about that one!  I love taking out my frustration in the spinning room or hip hop or just on the elliptical machine!  When I'm mad, I run faster, spin faster, work harder!

22.  Makes me a better friend to others, cuz since I've lost weight, I'm not so focused on my own insecurities.

I first tried Pilates from a video, but it didn't work for me.  Then I tried it at my gym, it is by far the class that kicks my butt the most!  I sweat more in pilates than any spinning class I've ever done!  It helps to have an instructor yelling at you to keep you going. . . and correcting when you are doing it wrong (or in my case trying to do it easier than I'm supposed to).

Totally agree with sqwish1984 and jenmcc!  Especially #12!  Best antidepressant in the world!
16.  It helps me want to eat healthier foods.
17.  It gives me more energy everyday.
18.  It keeps me going when others need so much of me (work, kids, husband) by creating a space for "me" in my day.

It's on Monday nights on FOX right before 24 (which I also love).  Did you hear that Sarah Wayne Callies (aka Dr. Tancredi) is pregnant?  Apparantly she is due in Aug.  So, will she and Michael sleep together?  Will they hide the pregnancy?  Or will she get killed?

Motivation How do I motivate my wife? Feb 28 2007

As a mom of 2 (ages 8 and 6) it took me SO long to loose the weight from pregnancy, not to mention the other weight I put on (that I'm still working on).  The worst thing for me would be if my husband was not encouraging!  But, he is not the right person to keep me accountable for weight goals, I need to know he loves me exactly the way I am (which today is smaller than a year ago).  I would look for a friend who can motivate your wife, someone she can work out with.  Give her time away from the kids.  I love my gym time each day cuz it's just me, no interruptions, no one needs me during that time.  Also, I found that excercise is an anti-depressant for me, something most moms need.
