Honesty between kids and their parents is what builds trust. If you want your parents to support and trust you (which will make reaching your goals a lot easier) be upfront with them. Tell them what you told us. You're a very smart person, you already did some of your research and you know what's healthy. If you focus on being a healthy person, rather than fitting into a certain image (and clothing size) you'll become a wonderful adult. No parent should be concerned that their child wants to be healthier, in better shape. Perhaps you could even hit the gym or just have a walk with your mom (or dad) and try to have some healthier meals with them. Keep an eye on your weight, you might have to eat a little more calories and get some extra protein, if you get really into working out. |

| My very wise biology professor once told me 'everything is letal, in the right amounts'. Yes, even water can kill you if you drink too much, a couple college students have DIED from drinking too much water. Diet soda is likely not super healthy, but not so bad you should avoid it entirely. Anything seems to cause cancer these days. About 10 years ago a study proved potato chips caused cancer. |

| I've started my journey last year February, at 294 lbs. I took it with small steps, I really wasn't aiming for an ideal weight, just at weightloss in general and feeling better. In august I reached 242 lbs and went back up to 252 when my mom was in town, I managed to lower it to 243 again, which I've maintained. Sure, it fluctuates between 243 and 249, but I feel good. I went from size 26W jeans to a size 18W. I bought a size 16/18 shirt last week, in the regular section. WOO! Never thought I'd see the regular section in my lifetime. I'd like to lose a little more weight, but not much. Perhaps down to 229 as I aimed for last year (it would change my BMI from severely overweight to moderately overweight). A size 14 would be nice, I could live with a 16 though. Most of all, I'd like to tone up, but since I can't drive I don't have access to a gym. In the end, I have bigger dreams now, which is the ultimate gift I gave myself I guess. Being fat is not the first thought on my mind anymore. So my love life story: I can enjoy stuff like clothing shopping, something I've always hated. Still hate shoe shopping, curse having 12W as a woman x_X And it would be nice if my husband could stop pinching my butt in public lol |

| Maintaining | Understanding weight fluctuation so as not to become paranoid | Jan 04 2008 05:45 (UTC) |

| I fluctuate between 245 and 249, it just depends on the time of day, if you've gone to the bathroom before weighing, if you're retaining water from eating too much sodium the previous day, hormone levels etc. etc.
Don't worry about fluctuations like that. As long as it keeps within the same range, you're good. If it starts inching up though, then you should consider lowering your intake a tad. Also, dont weigh yourself daily. I refuse to weigh myself if I was 'bad' the day before, it'll only make you feel horrible. Do it ever two weeks, or once a week if you must. |

| Maintaining | Shouldn't vegetables be counted in too? | Jan 04 2008 05:39 (UTC) |
|
| Most veggies actually burn as much calories as they give to you. I'd dare to bet that eating a serving of raw carrots might actually BURN more calories than it gives you. Celery is famous for that one, because it has so much fibers in it. You chew and chew and it has like 5 calories in it. So it's pointless to count it in. | |||

| My magic bean is oatmeal. 1/2 a cup of plain oatmeal, 1 cup water, add sweetener/Splenda and cook. It'll fill you up real good for 130 calories and it'll keep you full for a few hours. Nothing can beat that one. I find that eating a piece of fruit only makes me want other sweet stuff, oatmeal doesn't have that effect on me. | |||

| It's said that a glass of red wine a day is actually good for you. I'd say there's nothing wrong with it, just count it into your calories. I always end the day with a cup of cocoa, it's a habit thing and it makes me nice and sleepy. As long as the alcohol isn't a crutch, don't worry about it. I think worrying is worse for you than a glass of wine ;) | |||

| Oh, I'm definitely with you on this one. I've ALWAYS been fat, who am I gonna be when I'm not fat. I've come to realize I'm pretty darn plain and boring.
But that was last year, and now I'm a proud BBW as they call that. I'm a large girl, always will be, that's just the way I'm build. But I'm deliciously curvy now, instead of flabby fat. I'm trying to bloom now, starting to learn about fashion. I've never watched so many make-over shows in my LIFE! I'd love to shed a few more sizes (a 14 sounds kinda nice), but last week I was shopping in the regular sizes, wow, what a feeling! I actually bought a size 16/18... My first clothing item without W behind it (even my shoes have W on 'em :/ ) You'll learn to love it, eventually. |

| If she eats so little, the Alli will be absolutely useless. All it does is prevent the body from absorbing some of the fat of what you eat, which is probably non-existant already in her diet.
Sometimes all you can do is watch and wait. She'll likely crash this diet soon and after she licks her wounds, you can suggest and new 'diet' that's more of a lifestyle change than a stupid fad. |

You see yourself every day in the mirror so the change is simply too gradual to really notice it. |

| I'm a little disturbed by a lot of the posts. Please be aware that you are not helping someone by telling them how bad they look because they're skinny, that's just as bad as telling someone they're too fat.
There is no perfect body. There is no perfect size. People come in small and big packages. If she is comfortable with herself, that is all that matters. So my advice to you. Eat healthy, live healthy, be happy. Your parents will see that you're a happy, balanced young adult and hopefully accept you as you are. However, if you are unhappy with your weight, seek medical advice, it may be a thyroid issue or something else. In my opinion, you have gorgeous legs and arms and I think with age you will grow a little more curves and just be a stunning gal. Just live life to the fullest and dont worry too much. |

| I'm totally addicted to Wal-mart's Sams choice flavored water. No clue if it's good or bad for you, all I know it's yummie and 0 calories. It's in the isle with the nuts, tea drinks and bottled water, or well, atleast in mine it is. | |||

| It is kind of strange that their family will cook them two dozen eggs and a pound of sausage and bacon and a box of waffles for breakfast. I mean... They can't get out of bed, how the heck are they going to get other food? Sometimes you need to intervene. You're not buying alcohol for an alcoholic, don't buy junk food for a food junky.
I guess it's easy to say for an outsider.. but it seems to me that you could cook 23 eggs instead of 24 and lower that amount over weeks, or leave out some of the yolks. It's how I lost 50lbs, surely it's doable for someone that big. I guess a big part of it is the family, often they seem to have weight issues too. Perhaps none of them ever learned about eating healthy and losing weight slowly? |

| Goodness me, I've been on a bit of a rollercoaster lately. My mother came to visit me for 3 weeks all the way from the Netherlands... We went shopping and I bought a pair of 18W jeans! WOO! I wore a size 26W in February. I look mighty fine ;) Now I just need to get rid of the flabby skin. Bah.
I was down to 243lbs before she came, I am ashamed to say I'm 248 right now. We've been eating out a lot and she brought me bunches of delicious Dutch treats. Oh well, I'm not too concerned, if I buckle down when she leaves next week, I should lose it rather easily again. Last night I went to the cheesecake factory for the first time. DEAR GOD! That place.. wow. I had heard things about the portion sizes there but I didn't expect what they put in front of me. I had the thai chicken pasta, delicious, but I could only eat half. And then we had to have some cheesecake. You can't go there and NOT have cheesecake. I was aching on the way home. Today is fruit day LOL. Sinful, the only word to capture my past two weeks. |

| Hey there Cosan, I'm 5'11", I was 294lbs and now I'm 247 or so (haven't weighed in a while). I too am only 24 and felt the same sentiment. I'm too young to be like this.. we're suposed to be active and having fun and I was getting so painful I felt like a little old lady.
I've been at it since February, through CC, I've nearly lost 50lbs! You definately made a great choice of 'weapon' against the buldge. |

| I love peanut butter sauce, I'm really big on Indonesian food (mmm satay) Apple slices with pb, celery with pb and raisins on top... Crackers with PB. I don't think anyone has mentioned dipping those rold gold pretzels in PB, YUM. Nutella and PB sandwiches, delish. I like spreading PB on hot toast, has to be crunchy toast! You use a lot less PB when the toast is hot ;) And how about PB with a spoon? XD It doesn't need anything extra! |

| Hm, I believe I have low-carb wraps, I find them fairly tasty. I suppose it all depends on the brands as well. It takes time, but you'll get handy with the shopping. I know I got handier with it.
The key is to really compare, it takes forever in the beginning, but once you find the brands you like, it goes a lot faster. I found that some 'diet' food or 'low-carb' food were twice as expensive and differed almost none from the original. What a joke. Manufacturers really try to abuse the new health wave going through the country. On the other hand, there's some really good things out there as well. As said, it takes time, but you'll learn :) |

| rtd, why do you have to cut all carbs? Diabetes? I'm not an expert but I believe there are 'good carbs' even as a diabetic.
Almost any food can be replaced by something healthier, even bread. |

| Figured I'd update some.
I'm 252lbs, been losing weight still, but a lot slower. I stopped writing down all my calories and instead kinda guesstimate things. I just needed a break from being so anal (I would log every piece of gum I ate, luckily breathing is calorie free.. It is, right?!) So for a month or so I just tried to do it that way. Been going up a pound, down some, gain a bit, down again etc. Not sure if it was actual weight, figured it was water weight. My husband is hell on me.. always talking me into bad foods that make me retain water. I'm glad to see that I -can- maintain, without having to log everything. My guesstimations are fairly accurate and I know darn well when I have eaten too much in a day. So anyhow, still going on, during July I am gonna try and log stuff again, so I will lose a bit quicker again. My mom is coming from the Netherlands end of August and I want her to see a different daughter (I dont think I've been 250 lbs since high school). Go me! |

| When you're from Europe, Hersheys tastes bad. That's all. If you grow up with it, it's probably your preference.
There's plenty of European stuff Americans can't appreciate (salty licorice anyone?) and there's plenty American stuff I can't stand. Rootbeer is disgusing, the first time I had mini wheats.. ew (love 'em now), cocktail sauce/horse radish.. I just can't stomach that stuff. It's really what you grow up with. |

| I have a girl at work who is a lil curvy, she's only 16 though and has pretty low self-esteem. I encourage her and ask how her weightloss is going. You can totally turn this girl into a weightloss buddy :) Perhaps you two can even go to curves during lunch hour or after work. So you follow different methods, a work-out is always good! Perhaps she may even pick up your new healthy lifestyle ;) |

| I want a cat badly. When I was a teen I had a cat that I loved so dearly.. He sadly passed far too young due to kidney and bladder trouble :/ He was my everything and I still miss him to this day. He was a grouchy, mean guy. He hated everyone, but me. I always kept him in my bedroom, because he was on a special diet for his bladder and the other cats wanted to eat it. *sigh* My husband told me I can have a cat when the dog passes. Right now we have two rats, a bunch of hermit crabs and a dog. I'm a weird pet lady. For a while I was known as the hermit crab lady because I kept harrassing the local pet stores for better treatment of the hermit crabs. I actually got the Petsmart to move their entire enclosure from the reptile wall to the fish wall *laughs* I've always had lots of pets. Only now that I have my own apartment I realize what I made my poor mother suffer through. At the height of my pet collecting we must have had: 1 dog, 5 cats, 7 rabbits, 2 rats, fish and the occasional random bird that I would find outside. All in a city apartment o_o; Poor mom... |

| It's not really about age I suppose. This guy is just bad news, period. He could have been 16 and done those things and it would be weird and creepy. And I know all the stories about young marriage and divorce and all that. My husband and I both lived it. My mother divorced three times, his parents divorced when we were engaged.. My mom never reverted to being a teen, his mother sadly did. Which is really creepy. Age is but a number, life experience is what makes the difference. |

| I can go weeks without and then I will have a craving. Then I force hubby to go to Wal-Mart *laughs* They carry their store brand chocolate, which is the cheapest they sell and it's actually made in Belgium... Makes no sense that imported chocolate is that cheap, but I'm not complaining, it tastes like home. I can't stand Hershey's, it tastes like candle wax. I don't understand Americans and putting parafin in chocolate.. That's not for eating, silly people! :p When I have a bar, it disappears within 1-2 days though. But as long as it fits in my calories, I dont care. I lost 35lbs in 4 months and I ate plenty of pizza, mcdonalds and chocolate. Teehee, I love calorie counting. My current chocolatey treat is Edy's slow churned French silk. It's chocolatey and mocca-ey. Coffee and chocolate are double yum. Last week I've been craving chocolate so badly that I was eating cocoa mix... o_O; I blame the blue moon and PMS *snickers* |

| I'll agree with the first posters, dont eat or drink anything they serve unless it's black coffee. Also, make sure you bring plenty of healthy food to work. I work at a pizza place, I always have diet soda's, apples and special K bars in the fridge. You do NOT want to get hungry when you are around 400 calorie cookies (or pizza in my case). |

| Is there a rule in the almighty book of marriage that says you instantly stop learning and developing when you get married, though? I didn't think so.. When we got engaged we did so because of circumstances. I knew my fiance, just 18 at the time, would need room to grow. And honestly, I think (and he agrees) it bettered him as a person. he came from a badly functioning family and had no future ahead of him. I hope one day he will be able to go to college. We aren't rich, but we try to better ourselves. We live together in our own apartment, we work at the same place and we save up for the future.. together. Growing up is something that can be done together and I believe it might actually strengthen a relationship. Right now we're losing weight together, we've both been hovering around 280-300lbs since we met. As people said earlier, you are never done growing and learning. Yes, I am at a higher maturity level, which benefits my husband in ways. However, he has taught me about life as well, he's far more social and I lacked in that department. Back to the case at hand. Perhaps the girl teaches the guy things he didn't know about life and he probably teaches her things as well, if they are good or bad life lessons.. that remains to be seen. But every lesson needs to be learned eventually. |

| My husband was 16 when we met, I was 20something.. We've been married for three years now. In Alabama the legal age is 16. Personally, I think it depends on the people involved. Some girls are far more mature than others at the same age. I doubt her parents would allow her to be with someone who abuses her and I'm going to guess she's not staying with him against her will. I find it a bit assuming to call someone a pervert just because they're older. But that's just me.. |

| Weight Loss | anyone start at 350+ could not walk & breath? Desperately need help b4 I die. | May 30 2007 21:15 (UTC) |
18 |
| I cant say I have been 350 lbs. But I can tell you that my body was fighting. In January or so, I noticed varicose veins all over my thighs.. and I dont mean lil ones either. Big purple veins that would hurt when I stood, sat or even laid down. I also started getting hemmoroids, I never in my LIFE had those... Obviously my weight was too much on my body, my veins were breaking from me sitting so much. I got to the point that I would cry because of the pain. My husband couldn't watch me anymore and we were searching for solutions. I firmly believe in herbal remedies, so I was looking to get some horse chestnut and such.. which helps with bad veins. My husband tried to help me excersize, which was a disaster.. my back wasn't agreeing with it and I cried with despair. I am 24.. and my body is quiting on me.. I just couldn't believe it. And that's when I told myself that this was it. And here is where our paths meet: Neither one of us needs a diet, we need a lifestyle change. That is what I did, and I know you can do it too! This website is the most wonderful tool you will ever find. Figure out your daily allowance and stick to it. It's THAT simple. Just, learn to stick to your calorie limit. Dont worry about eating healthier foods just yet. Just learn to see how many calories you eat, write them down, every single one of them! Try to stick to the number the website gives you. Just do that for a few weeks. Don't worry about working out, one step at a time. It takes 4 weeks to teach yourself a new habit. So, after a week or 4, start replacing your not-so-healthy food with healthier versions. Replace regular bread with whole wheat, get low fat and low sugar versions of your normal foods. You will see that you get to eat quite a lot when you stick to your calories and use healthier food. Try to eat your food all day long. It will keep your metabolism up. Nibbling is good for you, as crazy as it sounds. Just stick within your calorie limit. Once you lose 10-20 lbs, it'll be so much easier to start working out. Ofcourse if you want to you can walk a bit here and there, but it's not needed to do it from day one, I know how difficult it can be. Just eating less/better can be a good start. I have lost 38lbs since February doing this, my husband started last month with me and he went down about 10lbs too. We dont work out, we walk very little... I hope in time we will be more active, but for now, we just watch our food intake. I bet you can do it! It's not that hard if you take little steps, I promise. |
