Hey guys, I went home in the middle of the day, hopped on the scale with my clothes on and such... and I'm down to 141! I'm sure if I measured like I normally do (in the morning, no clothes, before eating anything), I'd be lower... but I am happy!! Well, I know if I can do it, so can you guys! Keep up the great work! |

Yesterday was a bad day, but today I did pretty well... bought a bunch of fresh fruit from the farmers' market, and I've been buying products with Weight Watchers points on it... helps me keep track.

Hey guys, how's everyone doing? I'm trying to add back in protein powder to my diet... I have 1 canister of TERRIBLE rice powder I need to finish, then it's back to soy and whey for me!!
Also--you guys know Naked Juice? They have a deeeeelicious chocolate-banana protein shake. Great for a morning breakfast on the go, then save the other half for that mid-afternoon slump! Just be careful: each bottle has about 2 servings at 240 calories per serving. So don't gulp the whole thing down right away! :)
And iwbahe- how's quitting smoking? You can do it! |

| Iwbahe, good luck quitting smoking. Please find a way to quit for good! I've seen my own family have cancer and other complications from smoking, and not only does it hurt the smoker, it hurt everyone who loves them. Let us know if we can help you, and I am your personal cheerleader! I know you can do it! |

| You gotta find a way to get more sleep. Less sleep means your body requires you to --eat more-- to maintain your energy and stuff. My biggest advice is find a way to fidget all the time. Wiggle your toes in your shoes, tap your fingers on your legs, etc. It can burn hundreds of calories (about 350!) every day if it's constant. Also, portion control. It sounds dumb, but bring a measuring cup with you to the caf. Trust me--it's college! Nobody's really gonna care! Try to do 10 minutes of activity in the morning. Get up just 10 minutes earlier and stretch, do yoga, do some situps/pushups, jog in place. If you do that and alway eat a good breakfast!!! it will jump-start your metabolism throughout the day. Other than that, bring snacks with you to eat every 3-4 hours between class (or in class if your prof lets you). Apple slices with some peanut butter is a good example. And log every calorie. It will help you gain a sense of everything you're eating, what you can replace or cut out, and how much is a good portion of your foods. |

| Count me in! I don't own a scale (if I weigh obsessively, it de-motivates me), so I can only weigh myself every 2-3 weeks when I'm home helping with house renovation projects. I gained a lot of weight when I developed carpal tunnel because I can't do much exercise because it's so painful... then I started Zoloft to manage my sleep (go figure!), and that has NOT helped! I'm a junior, and I'm going to be in Mali in January, then in Paris for the full 09-10 year, so I want to be really FIT--and slim would be better, but I'd rather be in shape! Age, Height, Pants size: 20 years, 5'5", size 6-8 Starting Weight: 150 Current Weight: 145 Christmas Goal: 125-130 |

| The Lounge | sex is disgusting | Sep 10 2008 03:13 (UTC) |

Well, if you mature and continue to be completely disinterested (or disgusted) by sex, it is possible you might identify as asexual. As an asexual, I can tell you that I'm of the "completely disinterested" persuasion. There's nothing about sex, literally absolutely nothing, that I ever want to try. I'm 20, I've never had sex, I've never wanted to have sex, and it's most likely I never will have sex. If your aversion to sex continues after a few years and it causes problems for you (unlike me, I'm fine with it and I'm happy to stay out of sexually active relationships), you should consider visiting a therapist to talk about options. But let me tell you this: If you don't have the desire to be in a sexually active relationship, don't be in one! Just don't do it. If you aren't 100% sure you're ready, then it won't be worth it and you'll probably regret the experience. For more information about asexuality, you can visit the AVEN website Yesterday in in the UK's "Guardian" (a popular newspaper), there was even an article featuring two married asexual people who have been married 9 months and haven't had sex because they just don't want to. I'm proud to say that they are personal friends of mine, and they have one of the happiest and healthiest (and sexless!) relationships I've ever seen. |

| Hey, sweetie, take a deep breath. You're going to be okay. Whatever you do, don't drink or eat any chemicals. That could easily kill you. Just stop thinking about your recent binging and start thinking about those wonderful FIVE WEEKS you went without binging! Don't forget about that amazing accomplishment. You did it once, you can do it again - and for even longer this time. EVERYONE slips up sometimes; the trick is to get back on track and to forgive yourself. So you made a mistake for this past week. You had a little break from a binge-free lifestyle, but now you can start again. Just remember how proud you were for not binging for all that time. You CAN do it, you just proved it! Please consider going to a therapist. They will help you stay in the right mindset to keep up a healthy eating pattern, and they will definitely help you overcome the hard times if you do slip up. Honey, don't hurt yourself. Be proud for having gone five whole weeks without binging, and say "I can do it again. I will do it again." outloud. Say it outloud again. Say it until you believe it. But don't do anything that can harm yourself, because even if you do mess up your digestive system, that will only make the problem muuuuch worse. Get better the healthy way, and you'll stay healthy. Come on, I know you can do it. |

| I was on Lexapro for severe anxiety-caused depression. It totally helped me out, and after 2 years of Lexapro + counseling I was able to stop taking it and am now OK without it. It's a real success. The only thing that affected me was it made me incredibly jittery --- however, it's rare to have really noticeable side-effects. It happened to my brother, and we are the only people I've ever known to have side effects that haven't gone away in the first month or so. But compared how much it helped me really made the jitters a minor side effect. Please try it coupled with therapy, and hopefully you'll be able to achieve the goal of this medication -- to learn to be able to deal with everyday life enough that you no longer need it. Best of luck to you, darling. You can do it, I know you can! |

| Fitness | Is it possible to modify a pushup? | Mar 25 2008 13:00 (UTC) |

| Hey there, dear. I've got CTS, tendonitis, and radial tunnel syndrome very badly, and I've gotta say: don't do pushups. Anything that puts that much pressure on your wrists is seriously going to make them be strained and hurt more, and especially with the tendonitis you want to allow your muscles to repair themselves and not be working overtime to compensate for your weaker-than-average wrists. I'd really suggest looking into yoga at a yoga studio because practically every pose that bears most of your weight on your wrists can be modified by the yoga instructor. You'll get a great workout, plus studies have shown that more than 90% of people with CTS/tendonitis have shown improvement or elimination of symptoms when doing yoga for somethingl ike 6 weeks or three months or such. Yoga combined with physical therapy has helped me be able to type and write again, and someday I aspire to return to play instruments. I highly recommend yoga - but don't try to modify poses yourself. It's so much easier (and safer wrist-wise) to get an instructor who understands your needs to help you make a routine that works for you. |

| I always get away with cooking the following for my similarly health-challenged parents (and cooking a separate meal for myself on the side as I'm allergic to half the ingredients!): Lazy person's coq au vin- First, sauté (in olive oil) some mild onions or pearl onions, slices of carrots, peas, green beans/yellow wax beans, mushrooms, and any other vegetable you can convince him to eat ;) Next, brown lean, organic vegetarian fed chicken in a deeper pan for about 10 minutes. Then add the veggies you've sautéed, and equal parts chicken stock and red wine -- enough to cover the chicken. Cover and simmer until the chicken is tender and thoroughly cooked (20 minutes, about). After it's cooked, you can remove the chicken and veggies, add butter, and boil down the liquid into a sauce, and coat the chicken. Or you can discard the liquid and serve the chicken and veggies with some whole grain pasta and some sliced fruit. I like to serve chicken with peaches or strawberries. The most important thing is to slowly help him replace a bad habit with a good one. If you try to completely revamp his eating style in one go, he'll hate it and give up. I'm trying to convince a good friend that vegetables aren't terrible, which includes going to his apartment just to cook him meals that AREN'T pizza or burgers or five hotpockets ;) Good luck! You can do it and help your brother live a healthier life :) |

| The Lounge | How old were you guys when you learned to drive? | Feb 24 2008 04:52 (UTC) |

| "Young and stupid and confident" isn't exactly the kind of person I want on the road. I've seen too many people hurt by young drivers or because they were young drivers making stupid choices because they "believed they could do it." If someone is a fearful driver, then that person probably shouldn't consider themself as ready to drive. That doesn't mean young people should learn to drive simply because they're confident. As you grow older, you look back on what you were so confident about, so sure of, the choices you knew were right, and you want to go back in time and kick your younger self! That kind of organic, undeserved confidence needs to be kept in check - which is why age limits and required classes are implemented in the process of learning to drive. |

| I'm twenty and only have my permit, haven't actually learned to drive yet. . . and I hope I never will. Cars scare the bejeebers out of me... I've been in more than my fair share of accidents, for never having driven. I think my grandmother didn't get her licence until she was 35 or so, and I see no reason why anyone should get a licence before they're ready. | |||

| Weight Loss | Thoughts on my diet? | Feb 17 2008 20:12 (UTC) |

| To know that, we would need to know your stats: Age, height, weight, normal level of activity, end goal weight You would have an easier time keeping the weight off trying to go for a 5- or 6-month goal instead of 3 months, but if you are very good about eating enough, eating very healthy things, and allowing your body to take a day of rest when it needs it, you will definitely see a lot of progress in a relatively short amount of time. Also, would you be okay if you didn't lose as many pounds, but instead had a lot of lean muscle instead of fat? Because working out like you do, you're likely to gain muscle, which weighs more than fat, but looks a lot leaner and burns more calories than fat. Many people get very scared when the number on the scale goes up or doesn't budge at first -- even if it means they're getting stronger and healthier. |

| If it's for the military, shouldn't your goal be to be strong and fit instead of just thinner? I'd suggest T TH S S running, jogging, or treadmill, and MWF taking a break from cardio and doing weight training/situps/pushups. Again, you have to alternate so you don't HURT your muscles (as opposed to building them up). Do it a healthy way, and you'll find that the more muscle you have, the more effecient your body is at burning calories and metabolizing. Don't avoid carbs, avoid BAD carbs. Good carbs are, well, GOOD for your body. Try a meal plan like this: 2 eggs (or egg whites) on/with 2 slices whole grain toast with a banana for breakfast. Grilled chicken breast, an orange, a salad with DARK leafy greens and DEEP coloured veggies like carrots, red/green bell peppers, chives, etc, with a few Tbsp of sunflower seeds, sliced almonds, pecans, what-have-you. One apple plus 1-2 Tbsp peanut butter for a snack. I'd replace the ground beef with lean Turkey or a good fish with Omega-3s like wild Salmon, a salad, 1 cup multigrain pasta OR wild rice OR brown rice, and something like a peach or pear. But ground beef a few times a week is just fine, too. That's around 1400 Calories, which is pretty decent. If you exercise more than 200 calories, you need to eat extra calories to make up for what you've exercised off. |
|||
| Weight Loss | Thoughts on my diet? | Feb 17 2008 09:41 (UTC) |
29 |
| It's NOT possible. Your weight loss will significantly slow, and probably even stop (or reverse!) if you only eat 600 calories. If you really, desperately want to lose weight, you must eat at least 1200 calories every day, plus eating MORE to replace any ones you exercise away with situps, running, elliptical, etc. Otherwise, your body will say to itself, "HOLY. CRAP. Something's happened, and if I don't SAVE UP as much fat as I possibly can, I'll starve to death and DIE." Then you will lose muscle, which is smaller and leaner than fat, and you will GAIN fat. Do not go under the minimum of 1200 plus anything you've exercised away or you will NOT lose weight, and you will probably even GAIN fat and lose muscle, which will make you look like you've GAINED weight. I don't think I can say it any clearer than that. If you are under 18, you should eat at least 1400 calories/day plus exercise calories for the same reason: Not only does your body need the basic 1200 to function (and not think it's starving and start STORING fat), but also it's trying to make you grow taller and be healthy, so it needs the extra bit to let you grow. It will not make you gain weight to go up to 1400, so do NOT just decide that your body will have to make do with 1200. ALSO, make sure you have one or two days of REST per week from exercising. The way your muscles work requires rest for them to grow leaner and work properly. Otherwise, you will just hurt yourself, and you will be unable to continue to exercise effectively, which means you will get in shape a lot SLOWER. I can't stress enough the importance of eating ENOUGH calories. Eating fewer than 1200 will NOT make you lose weight faster, and not taking a break a few days a week will NOT make you get in shape faster. Your body is not made to work like that, and it will freak out at you, and you will definitely not reach your goal if you continue like you described in your post. |

| I want to not feel embarrassed and pull away when a friend pokes/tickles me in the sides, where all of my fat seems to stubbornly stick! I want to be able to hug my friends and be okay with them putting their arms around my waist. I want to be able to wear a dress without a long jacket to cover up, or my arms crossed in front of my stomach. I want to be able to go swimming with friends. The way I was raised, only the beautiful, sculpted people in my family went swimming, and the overweight and/or unhealthy people stayed until the umbrella, reading a book. I guess that idea stuck with me as I grew up, so I won't feel comfortable going swimming until I'm fit. :/ What a weird thing. I can't even wear a swimsuit in front of my mom. |

| Starting all over? Don't think like that! During those 26 pounds you've lost, you've acquired a better understanding of your body, diet, and health. You've gone a FAR WAY already, and really, the number the scale reads shouldn't mean anything negative when you look at how much you've lost already. Just keep going and you will get to your goal, and you know you can because look at what you've done already!! | |||
| Weight Loss | How did everyone do for valentines day? | Feb 15 2008 15:42 (UTC) |

| Well, I avoided the candy hearts because they're disgusting, I can't eat gluten, so I didn't end up eating any of the cookies or (FREE!!!) cake, which took SO MUCH SELF CONTROL, I cannot explain. I did have about 300 cals worth of Dove Dark chocolate, but I had already decided to allow it into my calories today because I knew seeing everyone eat cake/cookies would destroy me if I didn't have something planned as a substitute. (I also gave a professor chocolate from a huge bag I was bringing to Rehearsal, and he was WAY too excited about the fact that it's Dove Dark. It made me laugh a lot!!) So all in all, yesterday was a 1500 day instead of a 1200, but I'm happy with that! |

| Maybe you can make some "on the go meals" to tide you over until the next time you're at your apartment to make food? Bring a bag with a home-cooked meal inside, so you know exactly what you're eating, but he doesn't have the "Inconvenience" of driving back home. Even better, next time you have the conversation, both of you sign 2 pieces of paper that say "I agree to be supportive of _______ in his/her quest for a healthy and active lifestyle. Whenever possible, we will return to the apartment to make our own meals, or bring our own meals when we can't go back home." Just add ALL your goals onto your "Contract" with your hubby, and both of you carry around your contract at all times, so if he starts to argue, you can pull out the contract and say, "Hey, we both signed this." The only catch-- if you ever start to break any of his rules, he can do it to you too ;) |

| If your doctors told you to change what you eat instead of adding exercises, do what your doctors say! They've gone through some pretty intense schooling to become doctors, so there is probably a good reason that you should eat healthier instead of exercising more. If your parents won't help you eat healthy, get your doctors to talk to your parents about healthy food choices for you-- and ask them what kind of foods you should be eating while on a diet. Just make sure you eat enough food while restricting calories. If you eat too little food, of course you will make yourself sick. Since you're in your mid-teens, it's really important to fuel your body and brain so you can develop in a healthy way. For a teenager, you should eat at least 1400 calories/day. It would help if you wrote about WHY diets make you sick, what kinds of foods you can/can't eat, and why your doctors told you not to exercise. If it's only anemia you're worried about, I used to be incredibly anemic. Right now I'm restricting calories and getting everything I need to be healthy. Make sure you eat lots of nutrient-dense foods, like dark green veggies, beans/legumes, fruits, and in a lesser extent, meats to help you keep from reverting back to an anemic state. Talk to your doctors about what to eat. They'll know how to help you even better than we can because they know what you need to keep from getting sick. |

| The Lounge | Does Being Cold Make It Harder To Be Healthy? | Feb 11 2008 15:45 (UTC) |
|
| Monarch: SAD is Seasonal Affective Disorder. I've got it... Write stuff and other fellow Midwesterners -- Being in colder climates, our bodies naturally want us to gain weight to be able to survive. That's why, before everyone in the world started immigrating all over the place, the closer to the equator one lived, the generally taller and thinner people were. Just like there aren't naturally many skinny mammals in cold, cold climates, our bodies are trying to stock up on fat and warmth as a way to combat freezing to death. If you think you do have SAD, which is generally the onset of anxiety, depression, and a few other not-so-fun things, go see a doctor and consider getting a light therapy box. It's like a replacement for the sun, you just turn it on 15-30 minutes a day while having breakfast or something, and it helps you feel like your normal self. |
