| Sure. I think what most people in your situation are missing is motivation. Dieting is rarely a "do or die" situation. You can survive perfectly well if you're a little overweight, so there's nothing giving you that extra push. I know plenty of girls who are not 100% happy with the way they look, but never really devote themselves to doing something about it. What you need to do is find a reason to lose weight. Get a friend to do it with you, maybe as a competition or something. Untill you have that extra push to keep you going, it's always going to be very simple to just stop dieting whenever, and go back to your old ways. Another thing that helped keep me motivated was telling people I was on a diet and trying to lose weight. I didn't want to give up and not lose any weight, or worse, gain the weight I had already lost back, because then I would disappoint all those people, and prove that I am a failure. | |||

| I really don't mind the heat. Now the humidity, that's a different story. Mostly I've been wearing as little clothing as I can, and trying to stay within close range of either a large mass of water, or an air conditioner. | |||

| My stomach is a problem area as well. Some girls are blessed with a flat stomach, so that even when they are overweight, their stomach is relatively flat. Mine is the opposite. I do crunches every morning and so now I am toned on the inside, however, I haven't even lost a cm on my waist, so without touching my stomach you'd have no idea it was muscle. I do work out at the gym with my boyfriend, and that's also getting me more toned. No inches lost yet, but that's to be expected since I'm eating like 2000 calories a day (my job causes me to snack a lot). Good luck! | |||

I actually feel the same way?although I didn't really gain, I'm certainly not losing. It's sad how a pound or two on the scale really affects
my mood even though there probably is no noticeable difference. When I see 119
on the scale it just looks so much better than 120, and instantly I feel better
or worse depending on the number. I've tried to just stop weighing daily, but
it's a hard habit to break, particularly since I'm so organized and I write
down the number every day.
ANYWAY. What I really need is more confidence in myself. At this point, my body is at a perfectly normal and healthy weight, and an extra 5 pounds (gain or lose) is just vanity. Sometimes you need to put things in perspective for yourself. You lost weight. That's very important, since many people just complain about being overweight and never actually do anything about it but you did. It's an accomplishment and you should be proud of it. But more importantly you need to realize that your weight does not define you, and a few pounds here or there don't make much of a difference, so you shouldn't let them get to you. Good luck! |

| You don?t really have to live in Japan for that stuff though. I eat sushi several times a week, and my refrigerator currently contains soy beans and seaweed salad. In fact, I rarely eat fast food, just because I have so many other options available to me. Although today, I am planning on eating a vegetable pizza with extra mushrooms. =] | |||
| Fitness | order of eating and exercise?? | Jul 11 2007 14:02 (UTC) |

| You burn calories whether you exercise or not. By your logic, every calorie you take in will cause you to gain weight unless you exercise afterwards. There's something called a resting basal metabolic rate, which means that even if you did nothing you would still burn x amount of calories. Therefore, to answer your question, the food you eat after exercising will not turn to fat, and yes your body continues to burn calories. | |||

| Ok, rangerx3x, I think that statement offended you too much. I don't think anyone was implying that all of american food is shitty. If you go to a five star resturant, you get small portions of food that I would never call "shitty". But the food that most of america eats, the "fast food", is pretty bad for you. Think of the food that was invented here in America, most of it is unhealthy (as in, fried in oil). If unhealthy=shitty, then of course, American food is both. Consider japanese food in contrast--sushi is healthy, and therefore not shitty. | |||

| Although I'm not asian, I too have suffered from family members who care too much about my apperance. I never understood it. As long as I'm healthy, what does it matter what number is on the scale? I've never been obese (or even near obesity), and I certainly haven't had any problems finding men who like me (this is a big thing for my grandma--me having the perfect husband). It just seems like some people have too much free time on their hands, that they sit and worry about my height, weight, or potential suiters. Aren't there bigger problems in the world (and in your own life) than your daughter being 5 pounds overweight? --just my 2 cents |

| Sure fruit is healthy, but watch out for the sugar! Fruit has plenty, and too much isn't good for you. (Yesterday I ate nothing but sweets--mostly fruits but also ice cream and a blueberry bagel.--that can't be healthy). | |||

| I think that's a great idea! I've always wanted to have one at my house, but I have absolutly no room for it. Having one in your home would make it much easier to excersize, you'd have less excuses. Also, one problem for me is that I don't like to run/sweat in public, so I would be much more comfortable doing it in the privacy of my own home. | |||

| paganmist, I completely agree with you. When I'm constantly denying myself something I really want, I end up binging on it later. It's better to just let yourself have one controlled portion of something you really love than eating a huge amount of it later. Besides, you shouldn't let dieting consume your life, it's okay to enjoy yourself every once in a while--as long as you don't go overboard of course. | |||

| I always have that mirror to picture problem. I'll look in the mirror when I'm trying on a new outfit, and it looks great. Then the pictures come out and it actually looked horrible on me. Quite annoying. Also, the shopping experiance has happened to me many times. I've cried in stores because nothing fit me, the clothing I wanted to wear didn't come in my size, and it just felt unfair. I used to hate shopping, while my boyfriend loves it. I guess it's easy to love shopping when you wear clothes 2 sizes too big and everything is just baggy on you and thus, it all "fits". But now that I've lost most of the weight, I enjoy shopping much more, because now I can find my size, and it actually looks good on me! Well, at least in the mirror... | |||

I'm not sure if her feelings are being hurt here, it seems like she just isn't fully supportive of you. I can relate to that, and I even have an example for you. I happen to be jewish, and, if you didn't know, jewish women LOVE to feed their children. Well, thankfully, my mother would rather not feed me as much if it means I won't be fat. However, my grandmother still believes that her ultimate goal in life is to make sure I'm 150% full. Maybe even 200% if she can. So she's always trying to stuff food into me and get me to eat more. She doesn't care about me wanting to lose weight (even when I was at a much higher weight), so she takes me to my favorite resturants and tempts me with my favorite foods. To her, this is love. To me, this is cruel and unusual punishment for trying to lose weight. I think what you should do is talk to your mother and explain to her how important following a healthy diet is for you, and try to compromise with her about food. Eating more vegetables and healthy food in general wouldn't be bad for the rest of your family, so maybe you could make food together that everyone can enjoy--low cal, healthy, vegetarian food. |

| I agree with tyrdrop, but I'd just like to add another reason for why you may be losing weight faster than your girlfriend: If you're carrying more weight, it would make sense that you would be losing more rapidly. For instance, this morning I weighed in at 123 pounds, and my boyfriend was 296.7. Last week, he was 304, and I was 122. Notice the difference? |

| I'm actually gong through the exact same thing right now. I've been taking finals all week and tomorrow is my hardest final (accounting). I spent the whole week worrying about it, and in my kitchen eating in order to avoid studying for it. When I'm stressed, I don't have control over my eating, and therefore, I also binge, like you do. So to answer your question, yes, you're perfectly normal. | |||

| It's probably a combination of a difference with the scales and the food you ate/clothing you have on. I have that as well, two different scales usually don't give me the same reading, even when I weigh myself on each of them 2 minutes apart. My digital scale gave me 121.5 today, my regular, non-digital scale says I'm 119. | |||

| I would say yes, to eat the same. But if you eat less, it won't negatively affect you. I also woke up a bit later than I normally do, so I just ate a light breakfast and will have lunch around 2-3 (usually have it around 1) | |||
| Weight Loss | Why I weigh myself everyday... | May 12 2007 17:51 (UTC) |

| Dieting isn't really a tecnical thing. We've tried to make it that way, so that we could measure how much we eat and figure out some way to lose weight. But really, our bodies are all different, so if you're losing weight and you feel good (as in, healthy), then this is clearly the diet your body prefers. Edit: I too weigh myself every day, for the same reason. If I weighed myself every week, on a random day, I don't feel like it would be as accurate as say, the average of all 7 days. |

| Of course being thin doesn't solve all of your problems. But being thin is not what's required. Thin doesn't mean attractive. But if you are a great person on the inside, and you also happen to look great on the outside (that doesn't mean "thin", it means that you have an attractive body and face), your life will be much easier. also, in response to thedame: Although I agree with you that " There are plenty of people in the world who are absolutely gorgeous...until they open their mouths. " To me that means there are a lot of beautiful but STUPID people. And I've been guilty of this myself, sometimes purposely. People like me, and then I start talking, and they no longer do. So, in conclusion, it is ideal to be beautiful both inside and out, but if you can't have both, inner beauty is better to have, because in the long run it is more satisfying. Looks fade, and if all you have is your outer beauty, you will have a hard time getting older. So if you can't have both, be content to at least have one (some people have none), and one day you'll certainly find a man who appriciates everything you have to offer. =] |

Of course I agree with you, it's very true. But let's consider this. How can a guy see your "true beauty" without getting to know you? And how many guys would get to know a girl they aren't initially attracted to? How many girls would? Most people would like to say they aren't that shallow. And I'm dating a 300 pound guy, so I can't be that shallow (or can I?), but the truth is, in order for a guy to see your inner beauty, he would either have to see your outer beauty first, or just be a friend of yours who discovers your inner beauty. Most of the time , a guy notices my appearance, and then gets to know the real me, and see's how great I am in other non-phsycial ways. If a guy has to pick between phsycial OR internal beauty, most young guys would pick the former. It's sad, but that's the way life is, and we all hopefully know by now that life's not fair. EDIT: As for advice that I have: work on developing your self-confidence, and in time you'll find the right guy, one who thinks your beautiful inside and out. |

| Ok, there are 3500 calories in a pound, so unless you eat 3500 calories more than your body uses up, you won't gain a pound. Fast food is bad for you, yes. If you have the option you should certainly eat something better for you--like an apple. But eating fast food does NOT make you gain weight. It's only eating big portions of fast food that can do that (3500 calories worth in addition to the rest of your daily food). But you could do the same thing with more healthy foods as well, if you eat enough of them, they will also cause you to gain weight. The important thing isn't what you eat, but how many calories you are eating. If you wanted, you could eat nothing but friench fries and pizza and still lose weight as long as you only eat a certain amount of calories. | |||

| This was actually very helpful for me as well, because I've put my boyfriend on a diet as well, and he is also very active and about 300 pounds (he's about 5 inches shorter though). I was very confused with how many calories he should be eating, since a lot of places recommened he eat 4,000 to lose, and he was eating less than that pre-diet and clearly wasn't losing anything. I'm going to use your calculations as a blue print for his, so there will be less guess-work. | |||

| I completely agree with you workoutaddict. There are of course people who are over doing it and eating 300 calories a day--and that's obviously not a healthy way to lose weight. But 1100-1200 is perfectly fine. I ate around 1200 (or less) for 3-4 months and lost 15 pounds, and I'm still losing wieght, although I'm eating more than that now. |

| Weight Loss | Fun and dieting? | May 06 2007 18:52 (UTC) |

| I can relate, particularly with having skinner friends and people who aren't exactly health concious. But it is possible to have fun and eat food you like without feeling guilty or gaining weight. Just don't over do it. Now that I'm almost at my goal weight, I sometimes just have a maintenance day if I want to eat some higher calorie foods. Although on my dieting days I'll try to have around 1250 calories, on a maintence day I'll have around 1600. I haven't gained any weight thus far, and I've had 5 maintence days in the last 9 days. |
