Not only does cinnamon add flavor, it has thermogenic properties which may promote fat loss. |

My BMR is approximately 2500. Yep, I got 720 also. Even worse, to lose weight the site suggested I subtract 750 Kcal which would be negative 30 calories per day. Not sure which formula they are using, but they definitely don't have it correct.

| Weight Loss | My life is being destroyed by snoring .... | Jul 13 2008 20:25 (UTC) |

Your symptoms definitely sounds like Sleep Apnea. It is a deadly sleep disorder which is easily treated with a CPAP machine. The fatigue you describe is caused by a lack of oxygen in your blood. The work "apnea" comes from a Greek work meaning "without breath" and that's exactly what is happening. I've had my apnea under control for about 7 years now. I remember falling asleep at my desk, even at a stop light while driving. It is a a leading cause of strokes. Please, please get to your doc asap and have a sleep study done. From the first night you sleep with your apnea under control, you'll be amazed. And, you hubby won't be so annoyed because you will not snore anymore. The CPAP takes about a week to adjust then you'll not want to sleep without it. A sleep study is done in a medical facility where you are simply monitored while you sleep. The sleep labs have rooms that look a lot like a hotel room. They will first test without a CPAP, then they will test with one to determine the correct pressure for you. Even some of the most fit football players have sleep apnea. I will tell you that is very difficult to lose weight with untreated sleep apena becuase you simply do not have the energy to do anything.

Now that's an excellent, healthy meal! I haven't thought about kabobs and am always interested in new ideas to keep away boredom. I tend to eat the same things over and over. That would work with chicken, too.

Consider getting up 15 minutes earlier and make eggs & toast. I recently purchased a microwave egg poacher to make my breakfast prep a lot quicker. You can "cook" eggs and toast in less than 5 minutes. It only takes about 45 seconds to cook eggs in the microwave egg poacher and there is no added fat. Invest a few minutes in breakfast and it will pay you back. |

| Weight Loss | Does anyone else have this problem? | Jul 03 2008 16:23 (UTC) |

I'm going to reiterate what's been said in a few replies already. You need to balance each meal with protein, carbs & fats. Protein & fiber will fill you up while fat will keep you feeling satisfied. I find that eating 5-6 smaller meals per day helps me a lot. Your breakfast of an muffin & cheese will not keep you satisfied for very long. Add some egg whites, or even whole eggs for that matter. I recommend making breakfast your biggest meal of the day - say about 35%-40% of your daily calories. |

| Foods | Milk - seeking advice on skim versus 2% | Jul 01 2008 17:24 (UTC) |
12 |
I love skim milk and really enjoy 2% even more. My problem with milk is not the amount of fat or lack of it; it is the high sugar content. With about 12g of sugar in a cup, I was exceeding my suggested maximum sugar. Thanks to a CC post I discovered organic, unsweetened soy milk. That's all I drink now.
If you prefer 2% milk, I say go for it. |

Why on this earth would advising someone not to count calories be a good thing? There was a time when I was at a 22 BMI, now I am an 36. Maybe if I had been counting calories back then,I would have realized the importance of proper nutrition and balance. Geez, tough crowd here.

Original Post by gi-jane: Hey! Those white pumpkin seeds and the green ones are the same thing! The white ones are the ones that have not been shelled! I like to roast them with a little cayenne pepper and use them my salads. Roasting them is soo easy - just a very low temp oven (170 or so) and about 30 minutes. Yeah, I guess if you ate the white shell it would be yucky! |

| Weight Loss | How do you know which weight maintenance calculator is correct? | Jun 26 2008 16:37 (UTC) |

The eat meter is more important for me; I use the Burn Meter to log my exercise. If needed, I up my calories for that day to make sure I do not go below a 1000 calorie deficit. You expend energy no matter what you're doing, even when sleeping. Thus your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day - a tempting idea for some. The burn meter is as accurate as a generic tool can be. It uses a formula to calculate your BMR plus the activity factor. The sedentary activity factor is 20%. Hope this helps. |

I use in smoothies and mixed with fruit. You can sweeten it with Splenda or you favorite sugar substitute and you can flavor it with almond/vanilla extract or even some cocoa powder. I prefer plain. Now, I gotta try the tuna salad suggestion.. Thanks for this post! |

I've tried and tried the low carb way and it just does not work for me. I am currently enjoying about 175 to 200 grams of carbs per day. Those are complex carbs, not simple sugars. I prefer a balanced approach which for me is about 25% protein, 35% fats (olive oil) and 40% carbs. |

| Weight Loss | It's all so confusing. | Jun 16 2008 05:08 (UTC) |

At the sedentary level, your burn is your BMR plus 20%. I leave mine set at sedentary and log activity. Don't do both! Your BMR will decrease over time as you lose weight. I started at 280# with a Sedentary burn of 2840 calories. Now that I'm down to 253#, my Sedentary burn is 2637 calories. I aim for 1850 calories per day which gives me a calorie deficit of 787, plus an additional 200 (average) daily burn through exercise. I've averaged about 2 pounds per week. When I first started I tried 1600 calories per day and found that I was not as successful. You'll hear it over and over on CC - you must eat in order to lose weight. |

| Weight Loss | Is it possible to REALLY eat what you want when losing weight? | Jun 16 2008 04:41 (UTC) |
13 |
When I started on this healthy eating journey, I could never have imagined myself eating, much less enjoying, some of the foods I crave now. I can hardly get through a day without a huge bowl of raw spinach as a salad. I actually mix whey protein powder in my oatmeal with a little flax oil now. Tasty! Greasy foods are very statisfying until they clog your arteries. I've already had one artery unblocked, the surgery was hellacious! I find that adding spices (not salt) to chicken & turkey makes them more palatable. I add about 3 ounces of turkey or chicken breast to my spinach salad each day. Along with some cucumbers, tomatoes and a bit of olive oil. Pumpkin seeds or walnuts add some healthy fat and crunch. Without changing my eating habits, I don't see any way I could have lost nearly 27 pounds so far. Sure, I could count calories in burgers, fries and shakes and lose weight. However, I would not have the new found energy level I'm now enjoying. Good luck to you! |

Try Fiberwise pasta products. They are very high in fiber, thus quite filling.

I've found it helpful to make my primary goal to eat healthy and have more energy. The tools here on CC are my way of keeping track of my nutrition. Sure, I started out thinking I will lose weight quickly and weighing myself way too often. Now my focus is simply to eat healthy and feel better. An added bonus is that I will lose weight. Taking the focus away from losing weight gave me a new outlook on the whole process. I'm not saying it is easy, but I do believe it is worth it in the long run. |

I read this post last night thinking "this has happened to me before." However, I don't think I ever thought too much about it until tonight. | Weight Loss | How many grams of sugar should we be consuming per day? | May 26 2008 17:38 (UTC) |
13 |
Actually, there is no daily requirement for refined sugar at all. I quit eating white sugar and still average about 80 grams of sugar per day. Most of this comes from milk and fruits, none from refined sugars As a guideline, sugars should not exceed more than 30% of calories from your daily carb total. If I could find milk without so much sugar, I could cut my intake by at least 50%. Anybody know of a low sugar substitute for milk? |

Yes, Ground Flax Seed and Milled Flax Seed are the same! It has a nutty taste with compliments oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, salads. There's lots of ways to work it into your daily intake. A little goes a long ways as it is very high in fiber. I don't eat more than 2-3 TSBP in a day.

I don't understand the criticism for entering everything consumed into a food log. I did a rough calculation of how many "extra" calories I ate in a day to gain what I am now trying to lose. Over the course of time, I averaged eating approximately 200 "extra" calories a day. That resulted in a pound gained approximately every 18 days! Logging everything defintely works for me. I disagree that it is weird to track all of your daily intake. |

| Weight Loss | HELP!!! I don't know what to do with almond fats. | May 25 2008 21:15 (UTC) |

Absolutely, you should include them in your CC Food Log. Anything and everything you eat & drink should be in the log. A cup of almonds in a day seems a bit excessive to me. Are your almonds roasted ? with or without salt? I count nuts/seeds as part of my daily fat intake. I try to include a small amount of nuts and/or seeds into my daily food intake. Yeah, a cup of almonds has about 800 calories. Healthy? yes! High calorie, yes! I prefer to buy raw almonds and roast them in my oven without salt. |
