I'm in! I'm normally not a big drinker - one or two a week is a lot for me these days (always wine). But over the holidays I consumed a few drinks almost everyday. I had carolans in hot chocolate for the first time and was totally hooked! I even tried sambuca and drambuie for the first time. MMMM. Needless to say I gained weight as a result of the copious drinking and christmas goodies. Good luck everyone! p.s. are you in PG, PGeorgian?

Manu Chao! especially the bongo song! You guys should look him up if you havn't heard him before. I'm also obsessed with the new White Stripes album. Oh yeah, and anything by Dragonette is great to workout to. other good stuff: rilo kiley, hawksley workman, feist, bloc party, mika, tegan and sara, yeah yeah yeah's, hmmm...that's all i can muster right now. |

| Fitness | I need ideas about how to have fun exercising so it's not a chore and i can actually motivate myself to do it | Jan 12 2008 07:20 (UTC) |

working out to music really helps make exercise fun for me. i do lots of workout videos at home, most of which have really crappy music and annoying instructors, so i just mute, blast my own music, and exercise away. i'll even do yoga my own music. other than that, team sports are pretty fun. i play squash and volleyball with my friends every once in a while. everyone's so busy these days, it's hard to get multiple people together for a game though (bribing them with drinks afterward is remarkably effective!). i had to try a lot of different activities before i found some that were tolerable. mixing up your routine really helps keep things interesting too. |

nice job on avoiding a potential binge milfred! for the past couple of days i've been making hot chocolate with milk (the regular stuff, not low cal or anything) and having it after my last meal of the day. i figure i should be drinking the milk anyway so it's only an extra 120 calories for the cocoa mix. when i was young my mom used to make us kids hot chocolate every night - maybe that's why it does the trick? pretty obvious need for comfort and love food association there haha. i don't really have any advice to offer though. there have been periods when my binging has been "managed" and then other times when i feel totally out of control. i've tried chewing gum, drinking loads of water/tea, barring myself in my bedroom, mediating, journaling. Sometimes certain things work, sometimes they don't. I'm guessing successful strategies are pretty much all trial and error. |

i prefer my men au natural - like a wild mountain man! adventurer chic, would be a good description. the kind of guy that looks like he just finished climbing a mountain. they're a rare type though...unless you live in kathmandu haha coming in at a close second would be the "tempermental artist" look. effortlessly stylish and not overdone. oh yeah, and both styles include a great mane of hair (relatively clean please!) and lots of facial hair.

i don't go to the movies very often, but when i do venture out i bring ROASTED CHICKPEAS! they sound weird but they're incredible! they're super easy to make too. i would rather these than potato chips any day. all you do is: drain a can of chickpeas, coat in however much olive oil you like, season with whichever spices you fancy and bake for 30-40 minutes at 350F. Then sprinkle with salt. (i've heard you can dry roast them without any oil but i havn't tried that yet) |

just be there for your friend and her family. remember that her dad is still the same person he always was. just showing up will mean the most to them. when my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer and in the hospital i brought in my laptop and we watched his favorite nature shows (the planet earth dvd's are awesome!). he mostly drifted in and out of sleep but just hearing something familiar made him feel safe and happy. p.s. damsell300, i had have not heard anything regarding no raw fruits, nuts, and houseplants for chemo patients. i make fresh fruit/veg juice for my dad when he's not able to eat anything else, so your disclaimer kind of freaked me out. where did you hear this? are you in the states (i.e., maybe the recommendations are different in canada)? another night of google scholar for me! haha |

I exercise at home usually (gyms are not my bag - except the squash courts!)...but i'm thinking a nice long walk or cross-country ski would be fun on christmas day. Would that kind of a workout be OK for your foot? Does Wii boxing count as exercise? hahah |

| it sounds like you've already make a decision...
Alaska all the way! but I grew up on the BC coast so I would root for an Alaska trip anyway haha. I've never been on a cruise but i've "roughed it" a lot camping and boating on the coast. It is truely spectacular! Regarding the motion sickness, I totally feel your pain! I have severe motion sickness and havn't been able to find anything that works really well. Have you tried Phenergan? I know you can get it over the counter in the states. I've heard it's pretty effective, and it's the next thing i'm going to try for a 10 hour flight!!! It better work haha. What about anti-anxiety medication? I havn't tried that one either, but my best friend (who's a pharmacist) is thinking that could be a possible solution. Oh i hope you have a fabulous time whichever destination you choose. |

| Hi!
I'd like to join too. I am 5'6 and weigh 175 lbs. Two years ago I went from 213 lbs to 165 lbs, maintained for a year, but I've put on about 10 pounds since then. I totally need some extra motivation now that the holidays are getting closer (and I love to do all the baking!). Long-term, I would eventually like to get to the 140's (or even 150's if that feels right) and stay there. Good luck to everyone! |

| i have one that i bought last year on ebay. so far i have been pretty impressed with it. i mostly use it for workouts, not for calorie intake. i'm not sure how accurate it is, because i usually underestimate my calorie intake! it definately helped keep track of calories burned during activities. it keeps me motivated to burn the amount of calories i am aiming for, that's for sure.
the only downside (and maybe this won't apply to you) is that mine is really big and bulky on my shrimpy wrist. so generally, i don't wear it around all day. hope that helps. |

| Health & Support | I'm scared to go to the beach! | Apr 24 2007 11:02 (UTC) |
|
| hey sarah
i can definately identify with your situation. we've even lost around the same amount of weight. i'm also kinda apprehensive about the fast approaching swimsuit season. i don't even have a suit yet! that surf short idea is a good one though. i think feeling comfortable in one's skin just takes time. i was so disillusioned when i thought i would be super confident when i finally lost a bunch of weight. i think it's pretty important to work on developing a positive mindset about one's self image and body image during the whole weight loss/maintainance process. you should be proud of your weight loss accomplishments sarah! several times i was so worried about how my friends would react to me after i lost some weight. i felt like such a fool when they welcomed the "fitter" me with such compassion and kindness. i'm betting you have a great group of friends, and they'll just be grateful to spend a day of fun with you. i guess another way to put it is: which will you regret more? going to the beach with your friends or staying home? i also think putting things into perspective helps. everyone feels self-conscious in a swim suit. everyone. just wear something that you feel comfortable in. you don't have to justify it to anybody. if you decide to go, wear lots of sunscreen and cover up when you can! |

| i use sunscreen everyday on my face and neck because i'm super fair. oil of olay has pretty good unscented spf 15 and 30 products (i use the 30) that are good for sensitive skin. my nana has been using oil of olay most of her life (she's 90) and her skin is still beautiful - like an english rose! | |||

something about the in-depth narratives got my juices flowing! i don't know if it's a full moon or what but half way through something clicked inside me and i realized that pursuing a masters/phd in health psychology would be a good fit for me (i already have a 4 year hons undergrad in psych). i didn't even watch the whole show! ooo i can just imagine the epiphanies i may have missed. sorry guys, that was kinda off topic, but i just can't contain myself! haha julie |

i'm still a newbie and have been doing kickboxing for just over a year. i was never athletic growing up so i never thought i would like the martial arts, but i love love love them! dmk - what is kendo like? i've seen pictures and it looks so cool! i'm moving to japan in august and i am planning on taking up some form(s) of martial arts practice. what do you guys recommend? i get so confused - they all sound so different. how much time do you guys dedicate to practice? from what i hear, if you study seriously it can be quite demanding of your time and energy. julie |

| i work part-time doing economic development research for a consulting company. it's not too stressful so i have loads of time to focus on fitness. it has nothing to do with my background in psychology (go figure how i ended up here haha).
i'm getting my ESL certification at the end of May so i can go teach english overseas (pay off some of those student loans!) for a few years. I'm a wanderer so i can get pretty restless staying in one place for too long. |

| 1200calgirl - your plan for a Tibetan adventure sounds awesome! I so want to do that too!! Would you go in through China or trek in from India? I don't know if i could stomach going through the Chinese authorities. My buddhism teacher lived there and in northern india (dharmsala, ladakh, etc.) years and years ago. He intended to only go for a few days/weeks but it turned into a whole year living with the monks in caves. You may become so enchanted you won't ever want to leave!
ok so other interests - obviously i like to travel, learn about/with other cultures, and i love love love exploring old ruins (think ankor wat and maccu piccu). I do lots of gormet cooking - especially for other people, watch good movies, get lost in a good book, kickbox (any martial arts really), vinyasa yoga, meditation, and i watch tv too (miami ink, the amazing race, the heat, pilot guides/lonely planet, long way round, and lost) the only video game playing i do is mario karts hahaha. i must be the only non-gamer here! |
