ek5684's comment made me remember something that I try to remember about mean people... The hurtful things they say tell us so much more about them and their own fears and have very little to do with us.

That's hard to remember when you're under fire and it doesn't really stop the meanness. But it gives you a better perspective over what they're really doing.

High school kids are mean and it sucks. But hang in there for college; it's so different. Such a big place and so many people of all shapes and attitudes. I work at a college and one of my favorite past students was a chubby, round, sweet girl. She was wonderful; so much fun. She met a truly great guy here. They're now married and have twins (oh my!).

I think high school is weird and awkward a little for everyone; a lot for some. Hang in there kiddo.

I know Fritos are from the devil (diet-wise) but I love them and count out the serving size (16!) and use fat free cottage cheese for dip. One of my favorite snacks!

For some reason, I like the fat free cottage cheese way better than the low fat versions. Luckily.

I know there are plenty of lousy tippers, but when I was "waiting" my way through college the good tippers far outweighed the bad ones. Most of us started out as "hostess" with the normal wage and so looked forward to switching to waitress and making tips. Once we were waitresses we made tons more money than as hostesses. But we didn't have to share tips with all those other people; their wages were already more than minimum.

It took me a lot of trial and error to find my magic number (calories). I was eating too little for a while and not loosing. I also strongly agree with laura about weight-training and with you about hating running. When I have the "don't want to's" I remind myself that I love every song on my mp3 player and that a nice walk is all I have to do. If I'm inspired to jog a little after I get going, fine, if not, that's fine too. At least I'm out and moving.

I agree with sarah's theory; I had the same problem as you recently. But I'm not quitting running because it's making my butt look pretty awesome; and the rest of me. The thighs will follow.

Everyone else may see a top-heavy size 16 but I see a slender size 12 (I'm 5'11"). I actually feel that way most of the time too. It's all the walking and weight-lifting. Just don't show me any photographs! Those are the reality heartbreaker!

Good job! That's so smart, going by a fav pair of pants instead of letting the scale get you down (and irked is a good word for how I feel sometimes too). We'll just have to hang in there though; it's better than the alternative!

Way to go!

Maybe we need one of those encouragement threads for us 1600+ calories people to speak up (oh wait, that would be this thread! haha). I'm with you, I get sick of counting calories every single time I put something in my mouth. But right now, that's the only way I loose weight. Hopefully, when I get to my goal weight, I can just eat healthy and weigh once a week and cut back occasionally as needed.

Every one of us on here is probably already working those nice big muscles in several different ways (including the original poster, as stated), she/he specifically stated they wanted to focus on that area in some way. And I think it's a valid thing to do, especially for women.

I disagree with bodyscience. What is it that pulls your legs together? The gracilis, adductor brevis, and pectineus among others. A bodybuilder might not be interested in those small muscles (compared to the quads et. al.) but a woman who doesn't want her inner thighs flabby and rubbing together might lay on her side and do leg lifts (the bottom leg). It won't target fat in that area but it will tighten and lift that inner leg set of muscles.

There is so much good advice and insightful input on this thread, I almost hesitate to add this little bit (but here I go anyway). . .

"She wasn't this way when I married her..." Over a long life-time of being married there are going to be so many cycles and phases and differences and changes that you both go through. It might be wise to go ahead accept that you love each other no matter what. Otherwise you'll be sadly uttering these words over different things for the rest of your life.

And like someone else said (and you acknowledged), the food nazi phase will pass. But she will probably need to be careful and healthful for the rest of her life. That's just the way it is with us women and our fat-preserving bodies. You say an extra 10 pounds was just fine with you. Then another 15 pounds creeps on. The next thing you know, it's 10 years down the line and it's a 50 or 100 pound problem that really effects your relationship negatively. As in no sex. Ever. An endless cycle of depression and self-loathing. Talk about not feeling close any more.

Temporary food nazi sounds a lot more tolerable now doesn't it?

Also, I see absolutely nothing wrong with having fast, junky food on your work lunch breaks and a few cans of beer in the garage if that's what you want.

Well said, mickismommy. Like your friend, starving didn't work for me either. And now, like you, I'm getting my 1600 calories, have energy to exercise, am loosing weight slowly (thank goodness, I don't think my skin would be doing well at all if the pounds were dropping off) and I actually feel fit. It's great. Starving women: take notice.

Maybe in time it will draw up on it's own. By the time you're 21, when your body has developed as much as it's going to, if it's still hanging on maybe start looking into surgery.

I'll be interested to see what other replies you get. I'm 40 years old and have been overweight for eight years. I can tell my stomache skin is going to look bad when I've gotten rid of this fat. I've been rubbing St. Ives cologen elastin lotion on my stomache every night, hoping that does some good. It kept my skin looking great during my pregnancies, no stretch marks, skin looked good. Here's hoping it'll work some more miracles.

Were you going by what the scale said or by how your clothes fit?

I think (key words "I think"; I'm no expert here) that doing tons of exercise in one day is great. But doing tons of exercise every day with no down time for muscle recovery is not good. You're just constantly tearing down your muscles and never giving them the chance to rebuild. Recovery is when your muscles get stronger and healthier.

If you change your lifestyle to "very active" then you don't add your exercise to the exercise log; those calories burned are included in the "very active".

Most of us with desk jobs select "sedentary" and then log our exercise to get our total of calories burned for that day.

Pushups are a great upper body muscle builder. I had to start with wall pushups. I've graduated to "dresser pushups", haha. Maybe when those get easier I can switch to coffee table pushups. :) Someday, someday maybe I'll be able to do floor pushups (but that one's a long way down the road for me).

Just to clarify something... when I clicked on "forums" where the ten most recent threads are listed, I saw the "beef it's what's NOT for dinner" title and clicked on it to read. I wouldn't have known it was in the vegetarian forum until I read where frothbeast got flamed for speaking up. And actually he said exactly what I was thinking. Thanks for taking that blast for me frothy.

This sounds like a pretty good thing. I'm going right now to put that on my shopping list.

Seems like I could put it in the oven, go for my walk and weightlifting, then throw together a veggie dish when I get back and supper's done. Woohoo!

One of the best statements I ever read was on a man's blog linked somewhere in these forums. He said "Calories do not discriminate". Meaning if you're within your calorie guidline each day you will loose weight regardless of carbs and all the rest.

It took me quite a while to get past my carb phobia after years of buying into the hype. I LOVE Sara Lee multi grain wheat bread and have it for one of my snacks. If I feel that twinge of carb fear I repeat that man's line in my head "Calories do not discriminate".
