I am the exact same way...1 cup of rice is basically nothing...my family routinely makes me eat 2-3 cups of rice at dinner as well...sigh.

By the way, if you are using the measuring cup that came along with a rice cooker, it is definitely not 8 ounces, most of the Asian rice cups are 5-6 ounces. Check on the bottom, it may say how many mL it holds. 180 mL = 6 ounces.

Weight Loss Having trouble with reducing caloric intake... Sep 07 2008

It may not be the food you're eating that's the problem. Maybe your eating schedule is just not right. I have a pretty low calorie goal of 1200. It's pretty hard for me to make it through the day on just 3 meals of 400 calories each. No matter the quality of the food I eat, I still feel like I'm starving most of the time. What helps me is to eat several smaller meals more frequently. I eat a piece of fruit when I wake up, say 50 calories. At 11am I eat a small meal, say 350 calories. At 2pm, I eat a large snack, 200 calories. At 7pm, I eat dinner, 400-600 calories. At 9pm, I eat a small snack, 50-100 calories.

Quality of food definitely matters, though. Carbs will not keep you full and happy. Protein-rich foods will. Be conscious of your eating schedule, in addition to what you eat, and you will feel a ton better!
Weight Loss Late night eating... SUCKS! Sep 07 2008

Do you eat enough during the day? If you try to diet too aggressively then the hunger will catch up with you sooner or later. Eat enough and often. Don't deprive yourself at mealtimes because you will make up for it later with unhealthy snacking, no question about it.

Do you eat dinner too early? I eat dinner around 8pm. If I were to eat dinner at 5, I'm sure I'd be hungry enough for a 2nd dinner at 9pm.

Do you snack during the day? Consider switching up your meal schedule so you won't feel hungry at odd times. Eat 5 small meals a day instead of 3 big meals that are far apart. Making snacking a part of your daily plan will help reduce snacking at odd unplanned times like nighttime.

Are you going to bed at an appropriate time? It's hard to regulate your appetite and be healthy if you don't sleep well. If it's past midnight, go to bed!

Do you keep a lot of snackable food on hand for times like these? If so, throw out the snacks and stock your fridge with healthy food that isn't conducive to night eating.

Do you work out or have another productive way to keep yourself busy at night? I work out every night around 9:30pm. If you're not up to working out, you can just go for a nighttime walk with a family member. Make evening exercise a habit and you'll decrease your desire to graze at night.

Hey, I am a petite girl myself, I am about 5'4 and weigh 106 lbs, my goal weight is 103 lbs. That is plenty skinny for me--I'm trying to imagine someone almost 8 inches taller than me wanting to weigh only 7 lbs more. Trust me girl, I have been as low as 95 lbs, I know what it looks like to be that thin...your bones will all be sticking out but you will never have 'that body' or 'that frame' that you want. When I was that thin I still had huge hips/love handles/stomach fat. The answer to looking good is clearly to pick a reasonable goal weight and to use fitness to get the body you want. Exercise and build muscle...it looks better than blobs of fat on bones. Reevaluate your goal weight, hon.

Well I am about 5'4 and I weighed around 114-116 in july. as of today i am 106, which is 3 lbs away from my goal weight. i have been taking in an average of 1200 calories per day. i'm not adhering to any specific diet, but i try to eat a natural, 75% vegetarian diet with a focus on fresh produce, dairy, eggs, and homemade vs. packaged food. my weight loss is not the biggest change i am noticing in my life. my skin is better, i have lots of energy, and i am pleased again with the way my body feels and looks.

i also exercise regularly. lately i have started to do some muscle strengthening exercises in addition to cardio. i'm not an avid exerciser but i am hoping to get used to a fitness routine. dieting is pretty easy, but fitness is definitely a lifestyle/mindset change.

if I gain 5 lbs, my mom starts asking me "Have you been eating a lot of fried food?" "You've put on some, it must be from beer" "Why are you eating that snack?"

But of course if I lose the 5 lbs or even turn down seconds at a meal, she doesn't stop commenting on my "starving" and "dieting."

I'm already plenty self-conscious! I don't need to hear it!

i had this problem too!! which is why i decided to set a reasonable calorie goal for myself. i started out with 1800, just so i could get used to counting calories. then i went to 1500, which was easy because i never really ate that many calories to begin with. then i dropped to 1300. now my goal is 1200. it's too low so i'm working on upping it back to 1300 gradually.

i used to have much more aggressive goals, like 1000 or less, which were 1) unhealthy, and 2) unrealistic. and when i would (obviously) have trouble keeping to it, i would try to punish myself the next day by "making up for" the calories i overate the previous day by reducing my calorie goal for that day even more. that rarely worked, and i usually ended up in a binge/starve cycle. i stopped that and the 10 lbs dropped SO fast!
Weight Loss Small Tips that WORK (when losing weight) Sep 06 2008

drink water. lots of it. all the time. snack only when you're hungry. if you're bored just drink water, plain or with a tea bag or crystal light. i'm not recommending you drink water instead of eating when you're hungry. i'm just reminding you to stay hydrated.

if you use a food journal, count every calorie you eat. be honest!

eat foods high in protein. they fill you up better than carbs. seriously.

eat homemade and natural food. take a look at the food you eat at every meal. how much of it came out of a package and how much of it was natural?

the tip that helped me the MOST: if you eat too much on one day, do NOT, i repeat, do NOT try to "make up for it" by attempting to eat fewer calories the next day. you WILL fail and you WILL gain weight. if you eat too much on one day, move on and eat your usual daily intake the next day.

Are you drinking enough water every day? I like to keep a big bottle of water with me at all times and drink from it throughout the day. It'll help keep you from snacking. Because it doesn't sound like you're actually hungry.

If you are actually hungry at 3:30, then think about switching up your meal schedule. Eat a smaller lunch and dinner and add snacks to your day at 3:30, and any other times you seem to get hungry.

Weight Loss My thoughts on WL Sep 06 2008

[quote]When was the last time an anorexic said, "My body's in starvation mode, and I can't seem to lose any weight,"?

The only reason someone who was anorexic would not be losing weight would be because they were binge eating, making up for the loss of calorie, or if they actually came to a point that they physically had nothing left to lose.[/ quote]

that is completely untrue. i used to starve myself, i was 5'3 and i weighed 95 lbs, at that point it was very very difficult for me to lose weight despite eating very little. trust me, when i was at that point, i couldn't even look at high-calorie food without feeling disgust. i was eating barely anything, and even that felt like too much to me. i wasn't losing weight, because my body refused. not because i was binging. to me a binge was a piece of fruit! starvation mode IS real and anorexics DO go into starvation mode. sure, i would have continued to lose weight had i kept going at that point, but it would have come off much much more slowly than the first 10 pounds.

It annoys me as well. I know I am fine as I am at 106 lbs, I was also fine as I was at 116 lbs, and I was fine as I was at 96 lbs. My goal now is to be fit and stay fit! What does it matter whether someone else thinks I am fine as I am if I know I can barely do a pushup? I see a lot of room for improvement in myself, and that's my prerogative as an adult.

It's really true, I'm 5'3 and 107 lbs and for the last few weeks I've been doing cardio just about every day and averaging 1150 calories per day, I've lost a grand total of 1 pound...so if 1200 calories is too low to make a difference even for someone my size, it's even more ridiculous for someone your size to expect progress at that intake level.

Foods Muscle Milk Light? Sep 05 2008
01:13 (UTC)
A lot of people I know use muscle milk. It's really popular. And yes, I do know of girls who use it. One of my female friends is addicted to it! She's in great shape--she works out a lot so it's perfect for her. I use protein powder, myself. I prefer to mix it into the food I'm already eating instead of using it as a meal replacer (e.g., protein powder in my morning bowl of oatmeal). You can't really do that with muscle milk.
Foods Snacks Sep 05 2008
01:09 (UTC)
Fresh fruits and lots of little water bottles. Keeping a water bottle in your hand will keep you from mindlessly eating. Take a swig of water instead. This helps me when I'm out with friends and they're snacking. If I have something to do with my hands and mouth, like drink from a water bottle, I'm less likely to snack when I'm sitting around with food in front of me.
Foods CC accurate for vegetables? Sep 05 2008

that's what happens when you eat vegetables! I had steamed rice w/ a ton of eggplant curry for dinner today. 2 cups of cubed eggplant is a lot of food. i am stuffed and it was like 250 calories.
