Happy Halloween One and All!!!

I ate one SMALL Reece Cup last night, and the kiddies got the rest!  I'm thrilled with myself this morning.

How did everybody do with the "candy" holiday?

 Hi Naija,

You are doing fabulously with a 2 pound loss over a month's time!!  I looked at my chart just now, and I went from 155 on 1/1/07 to 132.5 as of this morning.  So, I too average about 2.25 pounds lost per month.  I will definitely take that.  I might not hit my original goal of 127 by Thanksgiving, but I'm sure to get into the 120's this month - just like you will likely get into the teens this month too!

Keep up your strength and hard work.  It will pay off.

Hey everybody and southcarolina guy,

Awesome chartwork s.c. guy!  I, too, use the chart to stay on track.  I'm feeling skinny today and am down a half pound to C.W. of 133 as of this morning!  To celebrate, I'm wearing my small suede skirt and sky high boots to work today.

Let's keep plugging away.....

Oh Honey,

Kate, hang in there.  How is your eating today?  (I have a few compulsions my own self...not so much food related - but still I feel a little freaky when I give in to one.)

Hey All,

Thanks for understanding, Eskima?it really helps a lot knowing how many of us struggle and still manage to get it done.  Sleep?? What?s that?  Nerves kept me up last night until about 2 hours before the alarm clock went off.  Had a great day at work though!  Plus, all the meals I lugged along in my cooler definitely kept my brain cells firing ? even without sleep.  Dang, Eskima you wise girl?you know that what you eat matters...Goodbye candy bars and hello fat free plain yogurt with protein powder.

I would LOVE to run, Naija, but my 46 y.o. knees ain?t what they used to be.  What is UP with folks that don?t get your personal vision of fitness???  It?s about muscle tone, strength, and looking darn FINE, especially in a bikini.  I just tell people rude enough to comment on my continuing fitness journey that I like to look good in a bathing suit.  That usually shuts them up?.probably because they don?t look so hot.?meow.  Weigh to go with helping us all focus on tomorrow and the day after that, Naija.

Miss Queen,  the very fact that you plateaued shows me that you have what it takes to reach your goal.  Keep praying and working hard, that fat WILL melt!!!!!!  You CAN do it!

Hey Everybody, and a shout out to Naija, Eskima, and Kate the Greatest,

Hang tough, Shorelover?how?s the tea doing?  Hey, Eskima, you have got it under CONTROL!!  Very cool, I died laughing when you took a stand on wineJ.  Naija, a very big Congrats on taking off a pound ? even after seeing the parents!  Thanks again, Kate for all your hard work ? you are the greatest!

I?m going **** tonight ? please pardon my profanity.  Tomorrow is my first day of work after being out of the workforce for the last year and a half?I?m frazzled and overwhelmed thinking of all the crap I have to do for my commitment to fitness.  I have been practicing getting up at 4:45 a.m. for the past week and a half in order to have time to do my workouts first thing in the morning.  I?m in the middle, RIGHT NOW, of running around pre making my family of two?s breakfast, packing for 3 mini meals tomorrow, and generally being hateful to my husband?like it?s his fault.

Anyhow ? this is my brief sanity break before resuming my frantic so called preparations.

Is there anybody out there who gets it ?all? done in the morning before work?  My hours are wildly changeable week to week, some evenings included, so the only guaranteed fitness time I?ll have is the early morning ? and I?m going to take it.  What does every body else pack for their workdays?  Any ideas about the ?planning ahead? that works for you?  (Eskima?)

Hi Eskima,

At 5'9 and 134 lbs - with a small frame-, my final goal weight is 125 and 127 for this ten pound challenge; like you, I'm really reaching for that low range weight.  I've been told by my doctor that it's ok, but that I'm pushing it a bit close to an unhealthy low weight if I reach my goal of 18% body fat.  That being said, yes you can lose more than 1/2 to one lb a week safely - I've read up to 2 pounds loss per week is ok.

It sounds like you ARE doing everything right already.  Maybe you can try shocking your body in a good way.  For FOUR SOLID MONTHS, I plateaued this summer from 137 to 142....I did double daily cardio, zig zagged my calories, weight trained a spit routine 5 days a week, and walked over an hour every day - still didn't break that looonnnggg plateau.  I'm 46 years old for heaven's sake and was trying to do what the 20 year old fitness models do to compete.  I broke down A LOT and ate out of sheer frustration.

About 3 weeks ago, here's what I did to shock my body:  cut back my over all time training to 45 minutes 6 days a week (but with more intensity and more weight than I had been doing with all those long hours of training).  I've been doing 3 days single cardio, alternating with 3 days weight lifting, and cutting back my walking to a half an hour daily.  I also tried, for the first time, adding 20 minutes of yoga....1st thing in the morning and again at night before bed, ("A.M. P.M Yoga" by Rodney Yee).  My calories are about the same, but I tightened up there too by cutting back so many cheats of too much fruit and candy bars.  Sadly, I still struggle with having alcohol one or two days a week.

The other big shock to my body that I've been trying over the last three weeks is Ephedra, which is now legal again.  I get it at a fitness store, not over the internet...too many fakes.  I can't drink coffee or have any caffeine with it (it already has plenty of caffeine added in), and it does have side effects.  In NO WAY do I recommend it without getting checked out by your doctor first.  It is real drug.

This is what's been working for me.  Hang in there Eskima.  You can do it!!

Dear Naija,

Good luck with your family visit and all the little and big temptations!  I know how you feel...it's a problem for me too.  I always want to stray with special occasions or whenever I go out of town to visit friends, and sometimes I can't resist the bowl of candy or Mrs. Field's cookies laying around.

I bring my protein powder, oatmeal, and sometimes even lug along my little T-Fal grill.  I often offer to grill for our meals...so we can have a little fun cooking together.  (I try to hit the local grocery for few healthy in between meals snacks and treats the day I arrive at my hosts.)

Breaks in your routine are the worst.  It sure sounds like you want to turn it around this time - I can't wait to read what all our fellow travelers' advice to you is!!!

Hi All and you "crazy" Kate :-),

You are SO not crazy; you're just a normal woman and human being.  I'm a big believer in feeling whatever you want to feel - shame, guilt, remorse, etc....and then doing what works for YOU (if and when you're ready to move on from an unpleasant or undesirable feeling).  I believe feelings serve us in ways that don't seem rational or permissable or acceptable at the time.  Again, in my opinion and only for what that's worth, I think the key is to look at how a "bad" feeling could be an extremely useful, intuitive tool for growth and improvement.

Plus, we all need to let the junk out; it's healthy and conducive to being in positive control, and the very opposite of being a control freak which only serves to punish yourself when you get right down to it.  Nobody feels the way they're "supposed" to ALL the time.  I cry and rage once a month like clockwork on my period (for no so called rational reason of course.)

I'm a scale lover 'cause it tells me the facts.  Studies have shown over and over that folks that weigh themselves daily weigh less than those that don't.  You may want to try Fitday.com to see at a glance what you burn vs. what you eat vs. premenstrual gain and try to, if you want to, to make FRIENDS with the scale.  It really is your best friend that tells you straight up those pants make your ass look big.  Take what the scale has to say, make an adjustment that doesn't kill you, and then I believe you can actually then say "Thank you Mr. Scale" because you have shed unwanted fat - maybe even by the very next day.  Fluctuations are to be expected and embraced.  I could never handle the suspense and ambiguity of NOT weighing myself everyday, but that's just what works for ME.   YES, YES, yes you can step on that scale any time you want...we have enough "rules" that are the real black and white laws of the nature of fat loss.

If this was easy, EVERYONE would look like an in shape athlete or a sexy, healthy fitness model.

P.S.  I binge sometimes too, the scale goes up, I get back on track, wha la...the scale goes down.  It's the natural circle and rhythym of weight loss that you're gonna do no matter what.  Celebrities get fat between movies!  The body does seem to roll with it all - and I know you will too.  Good luck!!!!

P.S.S  Can you tell this topic is a "hot button" for me? :-).

To KatetheGreat and probably everybody that over eats when they lose weight and are feeling maybe tired of working so, so hard.  Just don't ever give up.

Today I weighed in at 134.5 ....another pound and half loss since Monday's weigh in of 136.  Guess what? I panic and think maybe I'm not eating enough to support my training - then I think to up my calories just a bit to about 1500 - and end up at almost 1800 calories for this Monday's menu.  Sigh...

It's a good chance I WON'T be 134.5 again tomorrow, but oh well.  Don't be scared Kate...the worst that will happen now with your down deep committment (demonstrated by you reaching out and creating this board) is you might, just might plateau a bit.  NO WAY is "The Great" going to give in and give up to 150 again.  You're gonna feel so good and righteous about losing the last and, let's face it, the toughest ten pounds.  You are going to be HIGH knowing how many peoples' lives you have touched.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting yourself out there.

See you next weekend weigh in.

My Sunday, one day late, weigh in on the scale tells me I lost one pound our first week into the challenge, and I'm telling ya I'm stoked!  I read everyones's post thru the week and continue to get inspiration when I'm discouraged.  Keep the faith everyone and super good luck this next week.

P.S. I'm a scale fanatic too, but I enjoy it...the scale helps me plan thru the day.

Hi to "hard time eating healthy".

Most mornings I have 1/2 cup old fashioned oatmeal with a half small banana and a small half serving of low cal protein shake.  (I'm allergic to eggs...and garlic).  Morning snack 2 - 3 hours later is non fat plain yogurt with splenda or stevia, 2 tablespoons dry sweet dairy whey and more protein powder mixed in, or I have a protein shake with a half to one cup frozen berries.

I also totally suggest a "T-Fal" grill; it's more expensive but worth every cent.  Dinner or lunch is on the table in about 10 minutes...it's delicious.  I grill 4 oz. chicken, fish, steak for my fresh protein at lunch and dinner.  I also grill veggies for one of those meals: asparagus,  bell peppers, zucchini, squash, etc. with no fat olive oil spray added.  I grill ahead sometimes for 2 days of meals.  I steam broccoli, green beans also for variety.

Everyday, at the lunch meal usually, I have a huge 2.5 oz of mixed fresh greens or spinach with one shaved carrot, 1/2 chopped green pepper, 4 -5 chopped grape (tiny) tomatoes, 2 chopped green onions, and one tablespoon of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, half tablespoon of soy sauce for the dressing.

Afternoon snack is either more yogurt, protein powder, etc., a protein shake, or sometimes an ounce of nuts.  If I have the calories left, I also try to have one tablespoon of flax seed oil  ..mixed in a shake or yogurt...sometimes in a dressing.

My last suggestion is to buy a copy of "The 28 Day Shapeover" - it has it all put together for you: exercise, how many calories, and easy, easy meal plan ideas.  I use DVDs for weight training and yoga stretching at home and my elliptical trainer alternating with aerobic step DVDS for cardio cross training.  (I've tried many, many books and weight loss plans over my ten month journey - "Shapeover" is the best in my opinion).

I hope this very long email helps...I've lost 2 pounds this week!  Thank you katethegreat and everyone here for all your inspiration, help, and courage.  I'm psyched for the official weigh in this Saturday.

OK...this looks like a great idea!

Age:  46

Sex: F

Height:  5'9

Weight: 137

Goal weight: 127

I started my diet and exercise program on New Year's Day and did really well for the 1st 4 months.  I went from 155 pounds to 134.5 and then plateaued up and down from the upper 130s to a high of 143 - over and over and over.

I tried to exercise more to create more of a calorie deficit, sometimes up to 2 hours a day.  I was always really hungry and always ate more than I should at scheduled cheat meals.  So, it's no wonder I stagnated for the next 4 months!  I definitely overtrained, especially my left hip flexor...ouch.

This time around I am decreasing my exercise to about 45 minutes a day and cutting around 200 more calories from my previous daily target average of a little under 1700.  I am feeling pretty good exercising less and eating just a little less...it helps to cut out that glass of wine and the weekly Three Musketeer bar.  I lost 2 pounds over the last 4 days.

I know this is a long email...I'm just so committed to getting and staying in the 120's weight range - and getting back into my size 6's.

Good luck, everybody!!!
