It's impossible to lose so much from just body fat.

The theoretical calorie deficit to create that big loss would lead to lost muscle mass, lowered BMR, therefore slowing down progress. You could never meet the goal, and after the 5 months you'd probably end up with higher body fat percentage.

* Assuming this 50 lbs is the amount of overweight you have. For someone who is 200 lbs overweight loss of 50 in 5 months isn't that much.

I believe that for most guys simple guidelines are the best - focus on getting enough protein, good fats and complex carbs while avoiding bad fats and sugars. Water is your buddy.

List good sources of protein that don't contain too much saturated fats, list a few handy sources of good fats, explain what kind of products have complex carbs. They should be able to figure out the rest.

Not compensating for gym Calories is cheating and will hurt your progress. If you feel too full, go with something healthy and high in calories - adding olive oil to a meal is always a good option.

Running on very low calories will make your body focus on hanging on to fat and chucking muscle. Muscle burns calories so by getting rid of them your body thinks it's helping you to survive the period of starvation you're putting it through.

Lost muscle mass and holding on to fat means higher body fat percentage and less lean appearance.

Not an expert here but slow loss, weight training, keeping yourself hydrated at all times and certain lotions should produce the best results.

Energy is energy, no matter if it's on it's way in or out. 7000 Calorie deficit will lose a kilogram, 7000 Calorie surplus will gain a kilogram.
Weight Loss Eating too little/excercising too much? Mar 12 2007

Lot of people would say there's no such thing as "toning". You either grow muscle mass or lose fat. Both of these combined could count as "toning", and both cannot be done at the same time.

If you eat like that on an excercise day, you end up losing muscle mass, which means your body fat percentage goes up, which means you're doing the opposite of toning (you could call it "blubbering" your body or something to that effect). In order to recover lost muscle mass you have caused by not eating enough you need to have a calorie surplus and excercise (such as resistance training). To lose the fat off the top your excisting muscles you need a calorie deficit. In order to do the latter without also losing muscle, your deficit can't be very big.
Weight Loss conjugated linoleic acid: am I wasting my money? Mar 12 2007

Well, CLA is a trans fat so it's effects are more far reaching than just "reduction in belly fat". Studies show that it will dramatically change essential fatty acid distribution in your body, with likely harmful results.

I wouldn't risk my health for possibility of small changes in belly fat percentage.

Whatever she loses in weight is pointless, because all she would do in a diet like that is get her body fat percentage higher. So, in a way, she would get fatter, not thinner.
Weight Loss Eating 1200 Calories a day & burning 1200 calories a day. Healthy? Mar 12 2007

As people keep on saying, it's counterproductive to eat only what you burn extra.

Now, you might or might not care about the fact that it's extremely unhealthy and in the long run will put you in a hospital. However, if your goal is weight loss, you will fail eating like that. Your body will try it's best to store all the fat you have, and will sacrifice your muscles and internal organs rather than burn the fat. Your metabolism rate will slow down as much as it can, in an attempt to compensate your starvation and hold on to your body fat. In the end all you did was get your body fat percentage up.

Eat healthy, count your intake, don't have too low deficit, excercise. Focus on complex carbs, good fats, protein. Mind your fibre, drink lots of water.

Simple. Perhaps not easy, but simple.

Yep, don't go with too low calories. You end up losing less weight if you're too low. Eat more, lose more. That's how human body works.

Don't go under 500-750 Cal below what you burn a day. If you use 2600, 1200 is way too little and will destroy any weight loss attempts pretty quickly. 2000 would be closer to reasonable.
Weight Loss do you think this is true? Mar 08 2007

I believe that's true. Human body can adapt to lot of things.

It's not only for that that you should keep on changing your routine every now and then, it also keeps workout interesting, lessening the chance of getting bored and giving up.
Weight Loss too much of a drop to fast? Mar 08 2007

Being too low in Calories will slow down your basal metabolic rate, slowing down your weight loss. Your body will notice you're starving, and responses by lowering the amount of energy that it uses for normal functions.

In the end, your weight loss will stop completely. Recovering from that might take weeks or months, and you might regain at least some of the lost weight during the recovery process.

If you have problems getting your Calorie amounts up to healthy levels (you're way under), add some good fats into your diet. Some olive oil or peanut butter for example.

First of all, getting the tablets is russian roulette. The actual acid contents, despite whatever was marked on the label, are known to vary from 0% to 35% and some contain other, unlisted harmful or dangerous chemicals. The acid content variations themselves might be dangerous too, as over 20% acetic acid is considered poisonous.

In any case, potential risks are far greater than any possible benefits.

Second, even if you got lucky and got tablets that actually have some content that is listed while not being strong enough to cause chemical burns, there is no clinical studies that would proof any of the claims associated to them.
Weight Loss vitamin b+ higher metabolism? Mar 08 2007
00:43 (UTC)

If you eat otherwise healthy diet you probably get enough Vitamin B already. Among others, bananas, potatoes, liver and tuna have B Vitamins in them.

However, B vitamins are difficult to overdose on, your body can only take so much and chucks the rest. So taking a multivitamin that has B in it probably won't hurt you - but popping couple fistfuls of b vitamin supplements won't help you either.

You should probably eat 1700-1800 Cal on your workout days, 1200-1300 on non workout days.

Keep your metabolism alive by eating at maintenance level (or even slightly higher) couple times a month. Drink lots of water.
Weight Loss Losing weight without exercise Mar 07 2007

For the sole purpose of weight loss, excercise is very unefficient way to do it alone. It takes enormous amount to burn off a pan pizza, while eating it can be relatively easy.

So it is mostly about diet.

Still, during weight loss some working out would be a good idea. If you don't do it, you lose weight from muscles too - and that's not a good thing. So look beyond just numbers. Losing 2 lbs can be a good thing or very bad thing, depending where you lose it from; muscle or fat. Lost muscle also makes it harder to lose more or maintain, as your BMR will decrease.
Weight Loss Protein? Mar 07 2007

You cannot turn into a "muscle woman" by accident. It's a myth. You can do incredible amounts of weight training and eat lots of protein and not end up looking very muscular. Healthy, athletic, not muscular.

Achieving female bodybuilder looks require taking drugs and hormones and eating thousands of Calories a day.

For the purpose of dieting, I find it easier to keep everything metric. Nutrition information is in metric everywhere, so I weigh my food in grams and desilitres and weigh myself in kilograms.
Weight Loss Protein? Mar 07 2007
16:27 (UTC)

A gram of protein per kilogram of weight, up to 2 grams per kilogram if you're weightlifting.

Foods high in protein will make you feel full for longer.

If you don't eat enough protein, you lose muscle along/instead of fat. This means that any weight loss you experience makes you less healthy and looks worse.
Weight Loss Am I losing weight too fast? Mar 07 2007

A lot of the early weight loss is probably just water weight. You should have no larger calorie deficit than 500-750 Cal /day, and you have to eat more on the days you work out.

In the low run having too big calorie deficit will slow down your bmr and weight loss efforts.

If you have problems consuming enough, fats are easy and compact way to add more calories with little effort. Olive Oil, peanut butter, that sort of stuff.

You don't need to "freak out" over fats, they're important and good for you. Dividing fats into bad and good ones is important though, there's no harm if you get 100g of unsaturated (non trans) fats a day (calories allowing) if your proteine intake is sufficient.
